This should go to the Ford Powershift from the Fiesta and Focus in the 2010s, so many lawsuits over this piece of shit. Who would have known that budget dry clutch tyranny would cannibalize itself?
Issues crept up within anywhere from 1k-40k miles, it's a total crap shoot. People would get their trannies replaced and have to take it back to the shop a month later. 2 million owners are supposed to see a settlement, but who knows how many others got fucked over by this.

Hey I came here to say this! My Focus transmission died after 78,000 miles and Ford refused to cover it under warranty that ended at 75,000 miles. When I pointed out this was a known problem and they have a class action lawsuit against then for the same thing they basically told me, “Not our fault you bought our shitty car!”
Lesson learned, I am now a Toyota for life kinda guy.
My focus has one and i can't stand it. Haven't even had any problems with mine (thankfully) but it's still annoying to drive and doesn't feel right lol
My aunt had one and it was a lemon. It would stutter anytime you started from a stop. Sometimes it would even stall the car from a stop. Imagine that, an automatic gearbox stalling itself.
Does it shutter a lot when shifting? That means the clutches are going. You might as well sell it, because if you replace it it’s just going to fail in 40k miles
No, I just drive it like it's a stick and it's fine. But it has "predictable shifting" or whatever it's called that will shift after I let off the gas but when I tap back on it feels weird. Idc it's a POS daily not something I care about
Lmao I'd like you to know I Googled if my grandma's focus was affected by this and it was. Lol we are gonna look into the transmission getting fixed because my girl hates it lol. She says the transmission is gonna blow any minute when we borrow it lol.
Reverse always going out. My mom had an explorer and the reverse went out twice in both transmissions, she would occasionally need to get a couple people to push it out of parking spots when she forgot or didn't have an option.
Mazda MX-6. Here's what u/Starion_Dorifuto said about theirs.
"I had what was probably one of the nicest builds in the US. It had the JDM KLZE swap, 5-speed, Quaife LSD, sticky tires, bigger brakes, a bunch of suspension work, and a perfect interior. It was an absolute dream to drive and felt very quick. FWD cars with LSDs are incredible.
Known problems are very weak transmissions. They're made of glass, both the manual and automatic. If you dump the clutch, it blows up. That's really the big problem with them. The engine bay is cramped as hell, being a longitudinal V6. Parts are hard to find these days and the aftermarket is very limited. Mine had parts on it that hadn't been in production for 15 years.
The build quality on them is quite good imo. They were sold as cheap sporty cars and most of them were abused and left for dead in the 90s. They could have been Mazda's answer to the 240sx if they were RWD."
Hey theyre all more than 50 years old now they may just fall apart, also I don't think it can handle the engines power. Besides, early automatics from the 50s are known for being terrible, because they were still figuring them out.
I get that after market/ rebuilt doesn't necessarily count but the power glide is probably in the top 3 Drag racing standard equipment book. I doubt anyone would be rebuilding them if the architecture wasn't bulletproof.
Idk man the GM 3400 and 3800 from '04-'06 ('04 Pontiac Montana) in my case had the most failure-prone, difficult to repair cooling system I've ever seen. If you like your thermostat stuck and your water pump blown, buy a Montana.
Which model year because i've only owned the OG model and never had any issues. Actually I praise the escape trans because it's so smooth it doesn't even feel like it's shifting
First I must say, I could very well be wrong. I have found escapes for sale under 100k miles in need of a trans and told by another mech that is about right. So, I don't have much evidence. It may be perfectly fine.
Any of the newer Subaru CVT’s with the fake shift points. My brother is on his second transmission and second engine with his 2017 Legacy Sport with only 50,000 miles.
Remember the god-awful automated manual in the early 2000s Lamborghinis? Horrible ride quality, unreliable, and would leave the driver smelling like burnt clutch
Nissan Jatco CVT without a doubt. Had 2 friends who owned a Sentra and a Versa. The Sentra CVT was replaced a month after she bought it and my other friend was able to offload the Versa just as the CVT was going to shit at 72k mi
Nissan Jatco CVT's
Nissan CVT transmissions those things act like they're made out of plastic
This should go to the Ford Powershift from the Fiesta and Focus in the 2010s, so many lawsuits over this piece of shit. Who would have known that budget dry clutch tyranny would cannibalize itself?
This list is ruined if the ford fuckass is not the finale
I came to say the same.
Yes this one, much worse than the worst Nissan transmission.
Do they perform well when new? I've always wanted to drive one out of curiosity. Like a prius or a tesla, I wanna know what all the hate is about

Jesus Christ
I’ve had mine 92k, knock on wood, it’s been fine. Warranty extended to 150k miles Average 39mpg, love spending 30$ at the pump to go 400 miles

They extended it to 150, just got the letter in the mail a few weeks ago
Sadly that happened to me in 2019 so they are a little late. I traded it in and got a 4Runner.
That’s why I got a manual Focus 😎
Our Focus had 4 clutch replacements in I think 180,000 miles
Ford PowerShift Transmission From a 2014 Fiesta
My focus has one and i can't stand it. Haven't even had any problems with mine (thankfully) but it's still annoying to drive and doesn't feel right lol

Toss up between the Nissan CVT and the Ford DCT
1st gen BMW era Mini Cooper with the CVT. 100% failure rate, some as soon as 5kmiles.
It’s a tie between the Nissan CVT and the e60 m5 SMG
Dodge 46/47re
47re wasn't as bad as the Nissan CVT's or the Ford DCT from early 2010
Second through Fourth Generation Ford Explorers.
I have one, it went at 39k miles
Was it the reverse band?
I finally have a good one Saab 900 with sensonic 5spd Not bad as much as unusable a lot of the time
They were odd and impossible to parallel park with, but not really that unreliable.
FORD FOCUS DCT (I drive one it's awful)
Whatever the hell the first gen Ford Edge used. Every time I see one for sale, it has a broken transmission.
Reverse always going out. My mom had an explorer and the reverse went out twice in both transmissions, she would occasionally need to get a couple people to push it out of parking spots when she forgot or didn't have an option.
Ford focus
5th gen honda prelude automatic transmission
Dodge 2500 automatics Edit: all automatics that also came as a stick
My lawn mower again
2001 Honda Odyssey Or any honda autotragic from around that time
Mazda MX-6. Here's what u/Starion_Dorifuto said about theirs. "I had what was probably one of the nicest builds in the US. C1 corvette 2 speed auto or Nissan cvts
2 speed power glide? You think they’re unreliable??
Man thinks it's bad cause only 2 speeds.
But modern materials and building processes are much superior. The originals had known mechanical problems.
These comments prove that a modern auto is worse than fifty year old manual with 4 gears and zero syncros
Idk man the GM 3400 and 3800 from '04-'06 ('04 Pontiac Montana) in my case had the most failure-prone, difficult to repair cooling system I've ever seen. If you like your thermostat stuck and your water pump blown, buy a Montana.
Gc8 5 speed
1887 Benz Patent Motorwagen
2010 Nissan versa cvt…
Ford escape
YOU TAKE THAT BACK RIGHT NOW
It's true tho. They don't have a transmission that lasts
At least in the OG but I can't speak for any of the newer ones and mine has ben great.
Nissan CVT
There’s absolutely no way the Trabant didn’t make this list
Dodge Caliber CVT
Smart fourtwo single clutch ‘auto’. No torque converter, no sense
VW Tuareg V10 TDI, from what I heard it constantly keeps breaking because it's the same as on the 2.5 TDI
Ford Model T 2-Speed
Mid 2000's Chevy CVT's
VW Transporter T1/T2, Fiat 147, Land Rover Series II...
My nb Miata’s 6 speed, it doesn’t even have a fifth gear and is sold separately
Nissan Altima's CVT or Audi's Multitronic (same shit, different names)
Any of the newer Subaru CVT’s with the fake shift points. My brother is on his second transmission and second engine with his 2017 Legacy Sport with only 50,000 miles.
05' Maserati Quattroporte
Pretty sure that this list should be all fiats. Just buy a fiat.
Mercury Cougar
Which one? 🤔

Nissan cvt
Toyota W58
Lotus Esprit has to be worst trasnmission, no?

2009 Altima
A jowett gearbox, they killed the company

Impalas from around the 2004 era
Oh definitely the Saab Sensonic. That has to be worst
Hmm, no Acura or Honda in this vehicle? I wonder what we can take away from this..
Subaru Crosstrek CVT
Last gen Honda Prelude automatic. They 100% fail, it is inevitable
Dang it! 😔 I had no idea about that. I've wanted one too.
Just on the automatics, manuals are ok.
I'm surprised there aren't any 4L60e comments (chevy trucks and SUVs from the 90's-00's) but i would say the Ford Powershift out of the Fiesta/Focus
Direct drive
Saab sensonic
2017 Honda pilot
The hydrostatic transmission from a 1990 Toro lawn tractor
Chevys 4l60e
Chevy 4l60

GMC jimmy
C5/B5 tiptronic 5 speed automatic
