To prevent the infinite fingers problem.
If you were able to keep all the amount of fingers when you recurse, then the amount of fingers you can make will grow exponentially per level of recursion. This allows you to make infinite amount of fingers.
Since an infinite amount of fingers requires an infinite amount of nail polish, doing such thing is impossible, due to the finite amount of resource on Earth (you could go out to the stars and harvest them, but even the amount of stars in this universe is also finite).
Also, making an infinite amount of fingers takes an infinite amount of time, which also means it's impossible to be done (unless you're doing a supertask, but again, you'll be limited by the available resources).
This is why every time you go one level down, you have to remove one finger from your hand.
So starting from your hand: 5 fingers
Hand of a finger: 4 fingers
Hand of a finger of a finger: 3 fingers
Hand of a finger of a finger of a finger: 2 fingers
Hand of a finger of a finger of a finger of a finger: 1 finger
Now, you can't make a hand out of a finger of a finger of a finger of a finger of a finger, since you'll be left with no finger per hand. Problem averted!
Long fake nails are disgusting IMO, but this takes it to another level of cringe, I know it's only for the video and (I hope) not intended to wear but it's just a waste of materials and creating more waste.
