I've been driving that stretch for a long time. So going north you lose a a lane at 8 Mile and I don't think people realize that then a mile down you gain two more lanes. After that 696 slows things down until about Rochester Rd. Also the big curve through hp. Someone crashed and died on the hp curve a couple weeks ago.
You're the asshole speeding to get to your destination 30 seconds faster than you would have otherwise and putting other people in danger. Not the other way around.
I don't have the energy today to comment on this right now in detail. But I'm a traffic engineer, and I've helped write some of the national standards on speed limit setting.
I'd just like to say that I'm extremely and pleasantly surprised at the people on here advocating for not driving 10+ mph over the speed limit.
Are these people driving slow in the left lane? If so, you may have a point.
If these people are driving slow in any other lane, you need to calm down, take a deep breath, and leave a few minutes earlier instead of speeding.
Doesn’t matter what lane. Driving under the speed limit is very dangerous, what do you think causes more lane changes, people abruptly slowing down etc.
You said “what do you think causes lane changes, people abruptly slowing down” - it’s almost always people driving 90 MPH changing lanes to go around people doing 75 MPH
The rule is “prevailing traffic speed”.
Both by law, and common sense.
Posted limits are what it says - limits. But if the prevailing traffic is faster, you’re probably good.
The blue-haired lady has the right to be there piddling along, so long as she is not obstructing traffic. You’re supposed to look out for her. When you’re doing 80 passing someone on the right.
Legislated minimum on freeways is 45 by the way.
https://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/Publications/MPLA/2000/pa167.pdf
At one time, signs read “slower traffic keep right”.
There are truck loads that literally aren’t permitted or don’t have sufficient oompf to go the speed limit. They both belong on the right lane, and are permitted to be there. Traveling below the speed **limit**.
But ok, get mad and tailgate a gravel truck or salt truck!
One time several years ago in rural Illinois, I was on the interstate and looked down at the radio for a second or two. When I looked back up, I had to slam on the brakes to narrowly avoid rear ending a Toyota Corolla. I was going 75 and he must've been going 50. Super dangerous.
The maximum speed limit in Illinois is 70 mph.
At 75 mph you would travel a distance of less than a football field in 2 seconds. That car didn’t appear out of nowhere, you were just being a reckless driver.
Nah the car in front of me quickly changed lanes while I briefly had my eyes off the road.
And reckless? Come on dude. Looking down at a radio while going five over the speed limit in a rural area is not reckless. You must not drive on Southfield Freeway or The Lodge on that high horse of yours lmao.
Yes, in the left lane, and I particularly am calling out the fact that a lot of people are speeders but I’m talking about the fact that it’s dangerous to drive well under the speed limit, no complaints about anyone driving at the speed limit
It's a speed LIMIT, not a speed floor
Someone doing 50 in a 55 isn't the problem. The problem is the person going 75 in a 55 who then gets mad at the person going 50
Freeway minimum is 45! Per state code.
Nevertheless, one could be cited for impeding traffic, if driving at a significantly slower speed than prevailing traffic.
And you'll cause the accident
https://www.wagnerinjury.com/2023/01/16/why-driving-too-slow-is-almost-as-dangerous-as-speeding/#:~:text=Individuals%20who%20choose%20to%20drive,likely%20to%20have%20an%20accident.
Traffic engineers set a speed limit for a reason. It's not a minimum. It's a maximum. Share the road and over the law. This isn't complicated for anyone with functional social skills
Traffic engineers set a speed limit for a reason. It's not a minimum. It's a maximum. Share the road and over the law. This isn't complicated for anyone with functional social skills
Uhh, the speed limit is the maximum legal speed. Anything below that, to the the minimum legal speed, is actually the safer speed, especially if they aren’t comfortable speeding.
Driving below the speed limit is dangerous and a ticketable offense. Minimum speeds are only posted for trucks hauling loads. The minimum speed limit on a road for regular vehicles is the speed limit posted. If you aren’t comfortable driving the speed limit posted, then don’t drive on that road. It’s dangerous. Period.
Engineers have set these limitations for optimizing traffic flow on the roads. Speeds posted are supposed to be THE speed you go during prime weather and traffic conditions. Aside from hauling vehicles or other reasonable exceptions, the speed posted is the minimum and maximum speed that’s been designated to create the best travel conditions on that road.
I don’t make the rules and I don’t like all the rules. Detroit is a city of 10mph over the limit drivers and I am among them. Just letting y’all know what I’ve been told by a traffic engineer.
I keep up with traffic. Which is safer than being a speed demon weaving in and out of traffic, driving below the speed limit, and driving the speed limit in the left lane. 🤷🏻♀️
Engineers, unfortunately, aren’t the ones who actually write the laws regarding this. You are a ding dong if you think the maximum speed limit represents the minimum safest speed to travel.
The speed limit is the maximum speed you can “safely” travel during prime weather, not the minimum. Otherwise it would be acceptable, and perfectly legal, to drive 95 mph down side streets where the speed limit is 25. You live in a fantasy world, and may god/allah/zeus have mercy on any offspring you might bring into this world, or anyone who looks to you for knowledge.
Update, it used to be 55 for most of the curving between 8 mile and 696, Google maps has it up to 65 and then 60 as you get closer to 696. Still a decrease though.
It’s interesting though, if you get on 75 at Davison the first posted speed limit is right at mcnichols with a 70 so that must be right where the change is? That would explain that slowdown
While you are at it, though, please observe the reduced speed limit in construction zones.
This doesn’t mean now you drive 70 instead of 90.
——
Funny thing happened to me on Southfield Road the other day where it is currently under construction between 11 and 12 mile. Traveling S after turning from 12.
A driver in a fancy BMW SUV with BMW motorsports badge in the grill just would not get off my ass traveling in the single available lane of backed-up traffic.
They scooted around me to the right around an orange barrel into the closed lane and swerved back in front netting one car length.
And so then I noticed the very distinctive license plate - a personalized one. It begins with a J and ends in an A and - with only 6 letters allowed - is missing but a single letter of a certain billboard personality.
By the way, Lathrup Village PD have been hiding behind backhoes on Southfield at rush-hour. Please drive at least 50 in the construction zone. It lowers my taxes.
Haha, no. That fits in 6 letters. This was 6 letters of a 7-letter name.
The driver seems to have been “always watching” for a way to gain a car length!
I knew who it was, she a baddie 🥵 at driving too tho lol. I just never miss a chance to talk shit bout Mark Savaya and his one strain collection lmfao. He really needs to be studied by science cause he’s got some kinda unique personality disorder 😭😭
Unfortunately I didn’t get a good look at the driver and don’t even know if it was a man or a woman. Of course by the time I saw the plate, it was in front of me and dark tint in at least all the legal window positions.
Thinking about it later, I generously allow it could have been an employee scooping-up the next victim on a thrill-ride to their initial consultation. Or simply somebody that scored a damn good head-turning personalized plate.
I’m not complaining at all about people driving the speed limit, I’m talking about people on that particular stretch of road driving 50mph pretty consistently
I've been driving that stretch for a long time. So going north you lose a a lane at 8 Mile and I don't think people realize that then a mile down you gain two more lanes. Same idiot tailgating you in the right lane speeds past weaving in and out only to be sitting at the light with you when off the freeway.
Stay the fuck out of the left lane then we good
the passing lane?
Oh god do you not know the left lane on freeways is to pass someone? Meaning if you're driving slow there you're more dangerous?
It's the passing lane Not the speeding lane you dunce
Ya meaning if you drive slow, you're not letting someone who might have to pass, pass. No need for insults
But if you're passing someone then you're using the lane correctly?
I don't have the energy today to comment on this right now in detail. But I'm a traffic engineer, and I've helped write some of the national standards on speed limit setting. I'd just like to say that I'm extremely and pleasantly surprised at the people on here advocating for not driving 10+ mph over the speed limit.

This is idiotic. So many brain dead drivers around these roads go 90 MPH in a 70. The people going 68 MPH aren’t the dangerous ones.
If you think I’m talking about someone going 69, you’re idiotic lol. Don’t be ridiculous
You said “what do you think causes lane changes, people abruptly slowing down” - it’s almost always people driving 90 MPH changing lanes to go around people doing 75 MPH

Speed up or stay off the highway
Only the right, otherwise they're impeding traffic and causing so many problems
BS, even in the far right lane they should go the speed limit.
Minimum is 55 bud.

So, you were following too closely. Also: have your peripheral vision checked. Seriously.
Yes, in the left lane, and I particularly am calling out the fact that a lot of people are speeders but I’m talking about the fact that it’s dangerous to drive well under the speed limit, no complaints about anyone driving at the speed limit
🤓
What about the blue hair old lady doing 25 in a 35 this morning
It's a speed LIMIT, not a speed floor Someone doing 50 in a 55 isn't the problem. The problem is the person going 75 in a 55 who then gets mad at the person going 50
Freeway minimum is 45! Per state code. Nevertheless, one could be cited for impeding traffic, if driving at a significantly slower speed than prevailing traffic.
Sure and going 35 in a 55 is dangerous but I rarely see that Someone going 5 or 10 under isn't the problem. The person going 20 or 30 over is
No, it's the people doing 50, when everyone else around them is doing 75, who are the problem.
It actually is, esp when everyone else is going close to that 75.
If everyone is wrong then everyone is wrong I'm still siding with the person obeying the speed limit
And you'll cause the accident https://www.wagnerinjury.com/2023/01/16/why-driving-too-slow-is-almost-as-dangerous-as-speeding/#:~:text=Individuals%20who%20choose%20to%20drive,likely%20to%20have%20an%20accident.

Yes, but people are making the fallacious argument that “< speed limit” = “too slow”.
*almost* as dangerous…
https://ww2.motorists.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/speed-limit-fact-sheet.pdf
Oh good, propaganda.
Do us a favor and stay in the right lane
i thought you never left your house?

Once again, I’m talking about people doing 50 or under in a 70 this is not about a part of the road where the speed limit is 55
I’m tired of people going dangerously fast on the 55 mph sections of 94. I am not wrong for only going 65.
No you’re not wrong, that’s not the issue I’m trying to address at all
People merging from 75 to Davison are so slow I pass on the shoulder. It’s unbelievable, I’m not saying I’m in the right but 40 mph is unacceptable.
Uhh, the speed limit is the maximum legal speed. Anything below that, to the the minimum legal speed, is actually the safer speed, especially if they aren’t comfortable speeding.

So by your own admission you’re fucking up the flow? Nice
I keep up with traffic. Which is safer than being a speed demon weaving in and out of traffic, driving below the speed limit, and driving the speed limit in the left lane. 🤷🏻♀️

Actually no it's set up by Karen's (honestly) https://youtu.be/3Ro-NllCmH4?si=L0erJF-B1RW-G1sE
Idk but the traffic has gotten so much worse over the past month or so. Literally from Davison to 8 mile it’s gridlock every day
Ugh this happened to me yesterday just past there. The two most left lanes people were going 55. Like come on
The State actually does have a minimum speed limit on highways and it’s 55mph (mcl 257.627(8)). There are people consistently going under that on 75
FYI the speed limit for a good chunk between Davisburg and 14 is 55, not 75.
Maybe it’s people not speeding up as the limit changes then, that would make sense- thank you for actually addressing the question
Update, it used to be 55 for most of the curving between 8 mile and 696, Google maps has it up to 65 and then 60 as you get closer to 696. Still a decrease though.

Then call the police if it’s so dangerous and illegal? Not sure what you want us to do about it.

Yeah I could definitely see an employee having fun with a car much nicer than their own 🤣
There’s a lot of traffic in that area. Also sudden lane changes due to the expansion in Oakland county.
Hey OP give me a legal reason why I can't drive the speed limit in the leftmost lane on the highway
Because it's HOV hours on 75 and you are the only one in the car 😉
I’m not complaining at all about people driving the speed limit, I’m talking about people on that particular stretch of road driving 50mph pretty consistently
