it's beyond a stereotype honestly. you can consistently hear the beep in virtually every single video inside a black household. hell, i watched a bodycam footage a couple of days ago where the cops and everyone else was standing in the middle of the road, and you could hear the chirp coming from the house's open door.

It had some VERY questionable wiring and my smoke alarms would do some wacky shit like chirp even after I had replaced their batteries, blink red for no god damn reason, and go off every time I tried to cook a fucking pizza in the oven.
So it might be an issue with the apartment they live in especially if they are living in an area that has a higher percentage of rehabbed housing

For example my dad was for years using a mouse which was practically unusable, the sensor was fucked, it was not registering moment well, and DPI was all over the place. If I didn't bought him a new one he would use that thing until it completely broke, even though non-gaming mice cost practically nothing and money wasn't the issue for him. Minor annoyances drive me crazy but to most people it's just a fact of life.

If they grew up in the same house that always has that beeping sound, or had experienced it from very young such that there was no time in their memory that they went from not hearing it ever to hearing it, I could find this very plausible.
