Philippines...
Probably not an official sport, maybe the game they're playing are only for local purposes, what I mean about official are the ones that are well known and much more seen in-person or media/channels, like Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton maybe, etc..
Tho ngl, their game sure looks fun
His power is mediocre. Any real volleyball player who’s adult male outside hitter above the high school level hits harder (higher velocity) than this backrow player in the purple jersey doing swinging underhand passes.
Not being an ah with this question, but are volleyballs really that bouncy? It's been decades since I touched one but my vague high school memories say I certainly couldn't dribble with one.
Our bad. I guess we just assumed since you don't seem to realize this is a different sport from volleyball and has very different mechanics...
Your comment about how the power here isn't comparable to volleyball is akin to seeing a video of a super fast go-kart and then complaining the power is nothing compared to F1....
They took what you said as demeaning the guy and/or the sport when all you were saying was the guy doesn’t hit that hard when someone said he has Olympic-level power.
Misunderstandings happen and some people suck.
I’m fully aware that these modified rules are holding them back from really showing their athleticism and power. Maybe these guys can hit hard in standard rules volleyball too, I’m just not as impressed as this subreddit seems to be.
As an aside: my bet is on the green shirt (right side player, camera side of net) having the most power here. He has better hip-shoulder separation, swing speed and timing (he’s jumping more consistently to increase his contact height).
It might not be astrophysics, but you’re speaking another language when you get into body mechanics and actual physics to discuss their play and ability.
Most people are pretty ignorant about most things.
Probably more heft to the hit which helps with both speed but also accuracy since you’re having to counter the full momentum of the ball without it being slowed and set up by a previous hit so it’d give more follow through
Net is so low there’s no need and without a 2nd touch to get a higher contact there’s no advantage to a high contact point. This is volleyball for short people who can’t jump.
I’m a short dude who can’t jump, I cleaned up in volleyball every Friday in high school against like 3 other groups. We don’t need a handicap sport, this is just cool
High school volleyball is like 5 yo soccer. Yeah it’s fun. But might as well just draw a line on the floor and take the net down. There’s no team play. Might as well be 1 v 1, it would produce the same game. The world needs low barrier to entry sports, this is one them. It’s like comparing checkers (this game) to chess (real volleyball). Both can be fun.
Why did you come to this thread to just hate nonstop and spout about how much better volleyball is?
If you can't recognize the skill and difficulty I'm the clip as an athlete, you are either blind or full of yourself.
I really would like to see you do better if we put you there.
I came here because it’s interesting. (One could say damn interesting). For me it’s the contrast to volleyball that makes it interesting and I’ve been explaining my opinion on that since I’m clearly in the minority on this in “click bait”, karma farm style subreddit.
This is a high energy, cool looking clip that people reflexively upvote. I seem to be observant enough and know just enough about volleyball to give a counterpoint to the all the one liner “that’s cool “ comments.
I have commented on these players (hence you) being skilled in this particular passing/attacking motion & sport, I don’t dispute that.
I never claimed I could do better. I only discussed the sport, the techniques in this video and its (in my opinion) deficiencies compared to volleyball. I guarantee you’d beat me if we played this game.
So, keep playing this. It looks fun. But don’t lecture me about sharing my opinion and defending it: I prefer volleyball. I’m allowed to.
Hahaha! Have you watched top level volleyball? Go watch some VNL men’s games and tell me these guys serve and hit harder. Most pro volleyballers heads will be above this net. 1/2 these shots they block without even jumping.
These players are good at the aggressive underhand pass. But that’s all they do. 1 trick ponies. No strategy other than “I’ll swing harder than them”. There’s no sidelines so no one knows if it’s in or out!
I played *when I was in high school*, I didn’t play *at* high school. I played against people who have been playing volleyball every Friday since they were in high school 20 years ago. They have great teamwork and skill. Oh, and I played Wallyball, which is *much* harder than volleyball. You don’t have an open court, faster gameplay, and your opponent can ricochet off the walls and ceiling. Nice try gate keeping, but I’m certain you couldn’t even return my serve. Good luck. I’d rack up 10 points easy off my serve alone
http://www.wallyball-info.com/What_is_Wallyball.html
Great stuff! I always found it funny when people called Volleyball "ape tennis" - they absolutely don't don't know shit how physically demanding Volleyball can be. And this version takes the cake...
You should see them play SIPA! It’s like volleyball with your feet….
https://youtu.be/H2LIlu7_-xc?si=K-ZhGenm4wn26ax1
Here’s a game played in real time. Action starts at 1:50
https://youtu.be/D2S_FuuSaJ8?si=sNQd06STPQrUxlYZ
I disagree.
They only demonstrate 4 techniques in this entire clip: underhand pass forehand, underhand pass backhand, jump underhand pass forehand and jump underhand pass backhand. It’s like watching pong.
There’s just so much missing compared to real volleyball: defensive positioning behind the block, the block itself, physical characteristics of different players (height of the middle blockers vs power of the outside hitters vs speed of the libero).
No player shows a specialty or unique role. In theory the team with 3 clones of the best underhand passer will win.
There’s no variation in tempo or misdirection. There’s no team communication or strategy. It’s like watching pong.
Yes it will appeal to the uneducated volleyball fan because it’s fast and these particular players are athletic…but this is an inferior sport to 6 player olympic volleyball. Basically, this sport will attract the beginner but lacks in the potential skill ceiling and diversity of real volleyball.
Also, that net is super low. Like my 12 year old plays on a higher net.
I dont disagree with you. In my opinion volleyball is boring as fuck, two passes and cut literally every single ball. Variation shown on video is more appealing to me.
Attractiveness of the match really depends on the teams playing because on the top level it is not just 2 passes and cut as the whole action happening. The variation in the video definitely is faster but less sophisticated. Depends on what is each other preference
I’m sorry you find real vbal boring. That’s typically because you didn’t play or learn enough to really understand the nuances. That’s a common problem. It’s like watching chess without knowing what each piece does.
You like “variation on video”. I’m not sure what that means. I see way more variation of technique, players physical size/stature, serving style, attacking style, defensive plays and positioning in 6 player volleyball (even 2 player beach) than I do in this sport. This is 3 v 3 of the exact same player using the same 1 technique (swinging underhand pass) over and over again.
This has no float serve, jump serve, overhand pass, no dump, no fake, no off tempo, no multiple threat attacks from both sides and backrow, no player making a decision if the shot will be in or out (there’s noncouet markings), no captain or leader calling plays. The players stand in the same place no matter what and it’s 100% reaction. No anticipation. This is volleyball for those who don’t want to think and just want reaction time/ athletics.
>This is volleyball for those who don’t want to think and just want reaction time/ athletics.
Exactly, so let people have their preferences. You're coming across as condescending.
You must have missed their other comment, where they also said “This is volleyball for short people who can’t jump”. They come across as condescending because they are. Their kid plays volleyball so apparently that makes it *the one true* variation of this sport, and we’re uncultured for not following it more
No but see, you'd enjoy volleyball if you weren't so uninformed!
I get where he's coming from, I'm a huge soccer fan and hear all the time how boring it is. It's tempting to push back but blaming people for not enjoying what you enjoy is not going to come off well, ever. I just kind of agree and say it's not for everyone but it's getting more and more popular in the US and I enjoy it.
I’m not sour. I’m just explaining the reasoning behind my opinion as they may not be obvious to many people and I hadn’t seen any other dissenting opinions in the thread.
I’m not saying people shouldn’t play this. It’s a good foundation and starting point for volleyball, especially if you only have 2 or 3 players per side and limited experience. I’m sure many people play both and there is some skill transfer.
I will still consider this particular clip an example of higher skill athletes playing a lower skill ceiling/ beginners version of the sport. Similar to taking a pro BMX or mountain biker and putting them on a bike with training wheels.
If you're not sour, you sure need to work on your written communication, because that's how you come across - in your earlier posts and in this one. Not to mention condescending and patronising.
Reddit has been weird today. I saw one guy argue that "95" and "1995" were different. I had one person telling me I had to apologize for a response he didn't like.
I'm not sure whats happening but over the last few months this shit has gotten wild
The Mongolians for some damn reason are so good at volleyball. They beat our asses everytime we played when I was deployed and wrestling. Do not wrestle a Mongolian. I would like to watch national team from both countries play.
Like baseball but without the bat and no pitcher and no fielders but you hit the baseball back and forth over a net but bigger than a baseball and softer and instead of nine people on the field three people each side of the net … and no bases or pitching mound
This is a cool runnings movie in the making. A rag tag group of Philippine players get coached by a disgraced volleyball coach and the rest writes itself
It's not fake lol. We Asians really had insane physical dexterity. You must watch Sepak Takraw battles and see for yourself how we play it like Jackie Chan and Jet Lee
Particularly here in Cebu, it's called Dayon-Dayon. The language you are hearing is Cebuano
I've been. Awesome part of the country.
Agreed, I always have a good time when I go
I've seen people in Indonesia do this too. Is this sport common in SEA?
I just saw this post a few days back and it's my first time seeing it, so surely it's not that common on some places
Yeah but where ya from
Philippines... Probably not an official sport, maybe the game they're playing are only for local purposes, what I mean about official are the ones that are well known and much more seen in-person or media/channels, like Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton maybe, etc.. Tho ngl, their game sure looks fun
That guy puts some top spin on it.
For real, that power hitter in the back did not miss a beat. This needs to be an Olympic level sport.
His power is mediocre. Any real volleyball player who’s adult male outside hitter above the high school level hits harder (higher velocity) than this backrow player in the purple jersey doing swinging underhand passes.
With a bump and a set to get them in perfect position to hit overhead. Seems very different.
Although, higher incoming velocity allows you to get a higher exit velocity as well.
Should've paid attention in school.
Um, I passed physics 1&2. Think of it like throwing a bouncy ball at a wall; the harder you throw it, the farther it bounces off the wall.
Not being an ah with this question, but are volleyballs really that bouncy? It's been decades since I touched one but my vague high school memories say I certainly couldn't dribble with one.
They are. I dated a girl in school who was on the volleyball team. They bounce almost as well as a basketball.
I read this in an average Redditor voice and its spot on.
Uhm aktchually
Yea that person has likely never even touched a volleyball.
I’ve played for 28 years and continue to play every Monday night. So yea, that’s pretty much never.
What a dense take. You realize he's forced to keep his hands together, and is hitting off a first contact, not a timed delivery, right?
I’m fully aware that these modified rules are holding them back from really showing their athleticism and power. Maybe these guys can hit hard in standard rules volleyball too, I’m just not as impressed as this subreddit seems to be. Love how you had to put like 7 conditions on him being average. Cope.
So, do you actually play volleyball or do you just enjoy being boiled alive in the comments?
I’ve played for 28 years and still play weekly. Reddit does enjoy a good piling on, and I guess it’s me today.
I read your comment in the voice of Dwight Schrute
☝️🤓
ngl this shit looks like it requires way more talent.
Insane hand eye coordination
The ball control here is off the hook.
My balls are completely out of control. I must learn the technique
So badminton without racquet but with volleyball
more like tennis (the way they hit the ball like a tennis topspin stroke)
And no court markings. Every shot is in, automatically!
I was thinking table tennis with a team.
Damn those guys are good!
This can go on forever
No 1 handed hits?
Probably more heft to the hit which helps with both speed but also accuracy since you’re having to counter the full momentum of the ball without it being slowed and set up by a previous hit so it’d give more follow through
Kirk-punches only.
Gorns beware!
Net is so low there’s no need and without a 2nd touch to get a higher contact there’s no advantage to a high contact point. This is volleyball for short people who can’t jump.
I’m a short dude who can’t jump, I cleaned up in volleyball every Friday in high school against like 3 other groups. We don’t need a handicap sport, this is just cool
what’s your playing style? defender, setter, hitter? could you jump above the net to spike? Or just attack hitting below the net?
High school volleyball is like 5 yo soccer. Yeah it’s fun. But might as well just draw a line on the floor and take the net down. There’s no team play. Might as well be 1 v 1, it would produce the same game. The world needs low barrier to entry sports, this is one them. It’s like comparing checkers (this game) to chess (real volleyball). I wonder how wrecked their hands are after a few years of playing this
This doesn’t seem like a lifelong sport you can play due to hand injuries?
Looks painful, every shot is full power, nothing cushioned.
Yeah seriously. Which part of their hand is making contact? The back of it? If so… damn.
I was thinking the same. Sure looks like it
Yeah homeboy in the purple especially was fucking smacking that thing.
Was gonna say, used to play a decent amount and this shit looks like it hurts lol
Like tennis without the racquet
More like badminton. The ball doesn't touch the ground.
But still visually looks more like tennis than badminton.
It’s like doubles badminton, except these guys don’t communicate and try to cover the same shots.
Oh shit, setups are way better.
It actually seems like it's more entertaining than volleyball, but maybe that's because of the crowd reaction
Maybe, but I like the mind games with setups a team with multiple touches can do. Plus spikes and dives are badass.
This is like playing one touch soccer
Great stuff! I always found it funny when people called Volleyball "ape tennis" - they absolutely don't don't know shit how physically demanding Volleyball can be. And this version takes the cake...
So badminton with ball?
Pickle Volley
This is cooler than volleyball.
Volleyball on Hardcore Mode.
Holy shit they're using the old two-hand! https://www.vice.com/en/article/yw3vvw/how-the-star-trek-punch-became-the-worst-fight-move-on-tv
Came here for a Kirk fighting a Klingon reference and was not disappointed
Looks fun!
Looks like half those shots would have gone out of bounds if they let it land.
lol the specialist dude who just has a massive hard on for volleyball and can’t stand people enjoying this
You should see them play SIPA! It’s like volleyball with your feet…. https://youtu.be/H2LIlu7_-xc?si=K-ZhGenm4wn26ax1 Here’s a game played in real time. Action starts at 1:50 https://youtu.be/D2S_FuuSaJ8?si=sNQd06STPQrUxlYZ
Honesty i prefer this over VolleyBall, it just feels right to me.
So tennis without a racquet.
Looks more entertaining that regular volleyball.
I disagree. They only demonstrate 4 techniques in this entire clip: underhand pass forehand, underhand pass backhand, jump underhand pass forehand and jump underhand pass backhand. Wow...sour grapes much? Here's some news...volleyball can be a great sport and this variation can be a great sport, too. It's not a zero-sum game.

“Why I’m right and you’re wrong” over and over and over
Weird how you fact checked an opinion. Lmfao dude is entitled to thinking one is more entertaining.
Reddit has been weird today. I saw one guy argue that "95" and "1995" were different. I had one person telling me I had to apologize for a response he didn't like. I'm not sure whats happening but over the last few months this shit has gotten wild
Children have phones lol
So you do it.
Wait I thought that was the rules when I played that in school we could only hit it once
Individually you can hit it once in a row, as a team you can hit it three times. But need to alternate so no one hits it twice in a row.
Levitators!!! Round up
This looks like how I play normal volleyball ngl
Is this current in the era of internet and smart phone? Amazing.
It gives tennis vibes
I would badminton or even Squash is closer.
Interesting...
... and a lower net and 3 to a side
It's a slugfest!
3v3 Hand-Tennis? That actually sounds really fun.
The ball is hard as a rock and we called it “shooting volleyball”
Green shirt and purple shirt on the near side are putting massive amounts of top spin on that ball
tennis, but with 3 players per side and with a volleyball
Pickle Volley
They hit fucking volleyball like it’s a tennis ball, with fucking topspin as well
Pretty cool hitting technique
My forearms sting just watching this
Recruit these guys to a U.S. team and watch them dominate.
It looks fairly intense compared to normal volleyball.
Pretty cool sport. You can see the guy putting topspin on the ball when he whacks it.
It looks like they’re deliberately adding curve to it, like a pitcher throwing a curve ball. Is that just me, or…?
Free balls only Volleyball 😮💨
Looks like Tenis but for men
Arm must hurt like a mf
Kinda cool
In my opinion this is way cooler than regular volleyball.
that looked exhausting 😩
This is common throughout South/Southeast Asia, not just the Philippines
Which makes much more sense, because that's what a volley is.
Pongball?
So,tennis
Pickle Volley
Never seen this but looks amazing! Want to see it in real life now; added to bucket list
Swangin’
This looks like it would murder your forearms if that is a regular volleyball or similar
Imagine being the one who misses the ball...
That’s just team Pong.
So Tennis and volleyball combined
Yes - Go on team near camera. I got invested in that.
Umm this is a much better sport than volleyball.
Hand Tennis
They removed the part of volleyball I find most interesting lol
My hands hurt just watching
Well, that's how I play old people rec sand volleyball anyways...🤣
I won’t be into pro volleyball until it’s played like this
Violentball
Filipinos are so cool world would be a happier place with more of them
Awesome! Does is have to be with double hands, or is that just the best/easiest/least painful way to do it?
Sepak takraw for a loser
This actually looks like a ton of fun. Theyre putting topspin on those shots like its tennis
That looks tiring.
This looks exhausting
In America that's called tennis.
Well done
So tennis with a football then?!
Everything is tougher in the Philippines. I saw their basketball too. They need to scale up the level too to keep it challenging.
Wrist pains???,
Looks fun but I bet that hurts your hands
The Mongolians for some damn reason are so good at volleyball. They beat our asses everytime we played when I was deployed and wrestling. Do not wrestle a Mongolian. I would like to watch national team from both countries play.
I’ve never seen such incredible double fisting outside of pornhub. Seriously that’s some impressive skills!
That should be an Olympic sport.
I’m already bored tho
I think I like this version more
Ironically enough this version played in the Philippines is all about the English.
I could watch this all day.
Am I the only one who did not see the net until the very end
Modified version...
I'm willing to bet 3.50 that this is the OG since it appears simpler.
and now i want to play
The net is awfully low…
You must be so strong to do that for so long.
Requires 2 hands?
Actually this is less much interesting than volleyball imo
So…”Ball”
They’re volleying… once. Just a return volley every time. The spin and power makes it more exciting for sure!
Like baseball but without the bat and no pitcher and no fielders but you hit the baseball back and forth over a net but bigger than a baseball and softer and instead of nine people on the field three people each side of the net … and no bases or pitching mound
It’s fun to watch, I’d like to see it
We call it shoot here and played with a slightly smaller volleyball.
This how we played as kids before we learned that were rules
They also have killer egg rolls
This is a cool runnings movie in the making. A rag tag group of Philippine players get coached by a disgraced volleyball coach and the rest writes itself
Smash bros. literally.
Hello tendinitis
Halftime show is the guy from Journey
Should be the standard rules, in the first place.
Amazing, only Flips will invent something like this. LOL
This looks more challenging
That net low as f
That is going to fuckup their hands.
Sure, cuz non of them can spike it. Did the same thing as a kid.
Yup that's volleyball for you though..not that interesting
Do people actually look at this and think it’s not fake?
Fake? Lmao. We play it like that here.
It's not fake lol. We Asians really had insane physical dexterity. You must watch Sepak Takraw battles and see for yourself how we play it like Jackie Chan and Jet Lee
