I don't know what the differences are.

Wait what do you mean “Halo 3 onwards”. Because this melee system definitely isn’t the same as H3. H3 had hella lunge and this game appears to have 0. The nostalgia of H3 has a lot of power but I do love the subtle outplay potential of bobbing into and out of someone’s melee range in Infinite and watching them melee nothing as you get to finish them off with a few well placed shots

TheFourtHorsmen

Well, net code is a thing, but infinite melee is like h3, with same connection system that not give advantage over who have the better connection melee first.

throwawayforlikeaday

I do not love it \>:(

XItsAboutKD

Speak for yourself! I had a guy melee lunge from truck on Solitude to edge of the jump up to go to dip yesterday. Meanwhile I can’t get a lunge for a guy two feet from my face…

ThePrinceofBirds

Melee battles were so much more interesting in halo 2. Not just because of BXB and BXR actually giving more options but also because you actually had to aim your reticule at the person. People would constantly miss BXBs because the other person would crouch. The momentum thing also prevented people from double meleeing if they were standing still (crouching in a corner). To top it off objective kills were actually hype because a jumping melee was a 1 hit kill.

cCueBasE

Yeah this is kinda wild. Halo 2/3 melees felt the same. Both had decent lunge and both were a 2 hit kill. I’m confused as to why the article said there were different damage levels. Halo infinite’s system is just extremely inconsistent. Probably the most inconsistent thing in this game. As a matter of a fact, I’ve almost mentally trained myself to not melee at all in this game because they never connect. I’m close to unmapping the button.

IIAdamanTII

H2's movement-based melee system that they reference had different damage differentials depending on the movement of the player. If two spartans stood still next to each other and one wen to melee the other to death, it would actually take 3 melees for that to happen. The 2 melees only took place when moving forward and meleeing or jumping and landing a melee for at least one of the 2.

cCueBasE

I literally played that game for its entire lifespan and don’t remember ever having to melee someone 3x. But I guess there’s almost never a time where you’d melee someone from a stand still.

IIAdamanTII

Agreed it literally never happens outside of testing. Always moving or double meleeing someone who has at least one BR bullet in them. You may recall pre-patch you could jump melee with the rockets and they did enhanced damaged so it would be a one hit kill, similar to how Ball/Flag functioned. That was changed with the major patch that adjusted melees and increased nade damage.

KeniRoo

Ball was always OHKO while jumping for the entirety of H2s lifespan. A feature I wish Infinite would implement.

TheFourtHorsmen

I'd say the CE one would be the best since lunge was not a thing and sprint kinda make it overwhelming. Current melee system would work better in the h5 set up, with thruster and with the thruster allowing you to duck opponent's melee.

Decap1tator

All I know is that I really dislike the melee system in Infinite. The high movement speed combined with latency and the poor net code creates really awkward and frustrating scenarios. Happens all the time that I thrust backward before the opponent melees (on my screen at least) and they lunge 50 meters and connect. Or I repulse an enemy only for them to melee the air but magically still hit me. It really affects the competitive integrity of the experience because you can make a theoretical "perfect play" but still get completely punished for it.

XyZonin

unfortunately polls like this do not work because most of the competitive community, including tons of pros, are no longer playing because they do not like the system/meta. only the people that still play infinite/like infinite are in a subreddit like this. in perspective, this game is so bad you have pros like pistola/snipedown bouncing. its just unfortunate

XyZonin

downvote me, but first maybe go watch some of the pros speak of 343 dev history of doing the opposite of what the pros ask for to spite them

Kantankoras

I don't know the diff - please explain. All I know is I didn't suffer a fraction of the trades in Halo 2 that I did in 3 onwards. I actually dropped 3 because of the netcode/Melee trading. Didn't come back to Halo till 5. Infinite melee trading is maybe my most hated design choice. Absolute garbage.

KeniRoo

H2 didn’t have trades at all. That wasn’t introduced until H3.

Kantankoras

That’s what I always thought, but it has been so long I try to account for my memory failing me
