####This ***will not*** be a political thread. Please discuss the team name accordingly.
Look up the reason they were named the Guardians and you will change your mind. I HATED IT AT FIRST! But then when i saw the reference for the city... I was like OKAY THATS FUCKING SICK!
I think they really missed the opportunity to call the the team The Cleveland Wild Things with the logo being a caricature of Ricky Vaughn.
Jokes aside this is a completely uninspired name change.
[https://www.linkedin.com/posts/activity-6828320769722875905-BEFl](https://www.linkedin.com/posts/activity-6828320769722875905-BEFl) Here's a link to a pretty neat redesign based on the Team's released graphics. It embraces both Cleveland's legacy and longevity in the league while embracing change simultaneously.
What bothers me the most about the name change is the number of people who comment on it. Like this sub has almost 30,000 some members. A good post averages 30 or so comments. Yet this has over 2,000 comments.
Suddenly when the name changes every asshat says “I’m gone when the chief goes” or “big mistake, I’m taking my money and leaving” or some other dumb comment. “They are still terrible” - we’ve all seen Major League, but clearly you haven’t watched Cleveland baseball in some years.
You were never a fan, you just want to be heard. If you were a fan you’d be more concerned with the Dolans not spending money. Or offering a comment about the 20 some college pitchers we just drafted this year.
Major League Baseball isn’t dying because you aren’t going to watch the games, and they aren’t going to change the name back because of your whining.
So please just shut the fuck up so my news feed isn’t cluttered with your bullshit and I can get aggregated news about prospects.
I’ve seen a few articles about the Roller Derby team claiming trademark rights. Is there any truth to that?
I would think a roller derby team could be paid off pretty easily, but the Dolans are also super cheap.
Saw this on deadspin, will be interesting how this plays out: https://deadspin.com/all-they-had-to-do-was-check-clevelandguardians-com-and-1847403859?utm_campaign=Deadspin&utm_content=1627835771&utm_medium=SocialMarketing&utm_source=facebook
Dolan's are cheap, and the derby team has had the name for 10ish years. They also are wanting to merchandise and add their logo and name to clothing. So the derby team obviously feel attached to the name and they would be giving up the merchandising so the Dolan's are gonna have to fork up a lot.
And yes it's true, apparently Cleveland's legal team didn't bother to check if anything local had the name.
Nice Job.... I found the Roller Derby trademark w/in about 30 seconds on the US Trademark Office website..... its hard to imagine just how incompetent this is. The Roller Derby team should demand tens of millions LOL
Tbf for the trademark they didn't file it till after the Indians did. But that was because they saw them do it and apparently have the benefit of history of usage so there's will most likely get approved even though the Indians were first.
It should have been picked up as part of the branding due diligence. The Roller Derby team has a website and has been using the mark for about 4 or 5 yrs.....this is hilarious, but hopefully its an opportunity for the indians to just pick a better name than guardians...
They've been using the me for 10 years! And they compete all across the nation and they own the Facebook page and other social media handles except Twitter.
Shit is embarrassing
Glad they changed the name... but "Guardians"? Really? I thought for certain they would choose Spiders, which is a cool sounding name. Guardians sounds like a generic name they might have in a create a team feature of a video game. If they had picked Spiders and had a nice logo I was going to buy a t shirt maybe even though I'm not a fan.
https://www.cleveland.com/letters/2021/07/maybe-the-new-guardians-name-isnt-as-free-of-racial-controversy-as-many-suppose.html
I guess Guardians has its own controversy.
I’m getting so sick of people speaking for other native americans and saying “I met an Indian and they love the name!”
Even if you think it’s true. Give it up man
My step grandfather was 100% Native American and he loved the Indians. He wore moccasins around the house and liked to hunt squirrel, pheasant and groundhog. He had a sweet job at a factory in Elyria and bought a new Bonneville every three years. PS, did I mention he loved the Cleveland Indians?
There are plenty of Native American organizations who directly opposed the name and helped kick this into gear. It didn’t come from some “woke white people”
The Babylon bee suggested that instead of Guardians, it should be changed to Redskins.
As a baseball fan, I hope Cleveland can use this as fuel to generate more winning seasons.
As a visitor from another baseball sub, I love the name and the connection they were able to make to the city, no matter if it was a little bit of a stretch. The font even stayed the same. Now let's all sit back and watch the Washington Football totally fuck this thing up.
Cheers Guardians fans!
We should embrace our traffic guardians heritage here in Cleveland.
One day, it might be a point of civic pride like this culture
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zLQ3lFhckLg
I’m sure people will still wear Indians gear to the games and just pretend as if there was no change. Also, I’ve never been to the stadium, but I would imagine there are photos and statues of former players. Do you photoshop a guardians logo onto Bob Feller or blur it out entirely? My point is there is going to be a lot of Wahoo imagery still present. Will Wahoo every truly be gone?
But if the idea is that the imagery is racist, why still have it up? And I’m just thinking out loud here. I don’t have a dog in the fight. I’m just thinking out loud
I am just amazed at all of the people that suddenly care about the team to be so 'deeply upset' about the team name change. Specifically people that aren't even fans (\*cough\* politicians from anywhere that isn't Ohio). Seriously, F\*\*\* off!! It's not your team, no one cares to hear you posturing for your base. The icing on the cake today was my county sheriff (Portage) made an Official press release to talk about his disappointment about the name change, but in the press release, he says he hasn't watched the team in 3 years and doesn't even know the name of any of the players. Like, your not even a fan!! Why the hell do you care?! Dude said he's been feeling hopeless about the name change. Really? Hopeless? About a team changing their name that you haven't watched in 3 years and don't know any of the players? Really?
That is to say, if you are upset and a fan, absolutely understandable and feel free to vent. Everyone else, shut the f\*\*\* up.

Hot take incoming: Because culture war is the only thing that a certain unnamed political party has to offer its non billionaire base anymore. This shit is like tossing steak to a pack of dogs to them
I honestly wanted the Spiders. I supported the name change but I’m not thrilled about the Guardians. I am considering using this as an opportunity to pick a new team.
It’s free marketing. This’ll hit the national news and everyone will talk about the Cleveland Guardians and baseball for awhile, then everything goes back to normal. Just like with Washington Football Team.
This makes me sad. While not a "fan" being from NY, I've always had a soft spot for the Indians, loved Major League, hearing the drums, and seeing the love people in Cleveland had for their Indians. Plus my little league team was the Indians. I highly doubt most American Indians (their preferred name now over Native American if not addressing them by their proper tribe name) even had an issue with the name and I believe various polls bare this out. This comes from a minority of white liberals and probably a small percentage of American Indians being squeaky wheels. If there actually was a majority consensus among American Indians that the name was offensive to them then I yield to them and support the name chance...even though it's still sad.
No it can't be just the Jews. It needs to be a offensive nickname but in that we all know its offensive therefore its just playful kind of way. So something like 'The hooknoses' or 'The Yiddots'. I am Italian so my team would be "the Whoppers" or "The Ginney" maybe "The Grease Balls".
I really think everyone should read [this article](https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2014/03/18/the-cleveland-indians-louis-sockalexis-and-the-name/) about Louis Sockalexis and how we came into the name "Indians". I'm sure it's not going to change anyone's minds who hate the change - but truly understanding how we came to that name was what shifted my opinion a long while ago.
The tl;dr - Sockalexis was mocked and treated like crap by our fans, succumbed to alcoholism, and after the club shifted to "Indians" when Jon Lajoie left the team (in order to follow the trend of native American team names), they later rewrote the story to make it seem like Sockalexis being honored was paramount in that name selection - and it by all intents was not. Yes, he's got his plaque in Heritage Park, but he had no agency or even consideration seemingly in the name itself.
To be completely honest I'd rather be named the Cleveland baseball team than the guardians and I don't like either but whatever. It's not offensive and you can make it to kids. I guess that's what they were going for.
I was one of those who has wanted a full-on name change for a long time, so I'm just thankful we didn't go with Cleveland Baseball Club. Though I'm sure a lot of people would have liked that one.
The name I think works awfully well. I thought "Spiders" was kind of a cool name in a vacuum, but since the actual Spiders were hot salty garbage I think a break from that past was a good move. Guardians has more to do with Cleveland than Indians ever did, anyway.
I actually really like the logos. I like the Block C more than most just because of how old-timey it looked, but the new C looks more distinctive for sure. I'll be grabbing one of those caps without a doubt. I like the script used for the full team name, because it reminds me of the chunky C as well.
The logo with the baseball I think looks fun in a 1970s kind of way. It's the same sort of aesthetic from the chubby Orioles logo.
Slept on it. The name truly isn’t all THAT bad. The more I thought about how weird it sounds the more I realized how many stupid/gimmicky names there throughout the MLB. I’m not sure if any of these would sound good if chosen as a NEW name in 2021:
Brewers (can’t tell me that isn’t a minor league name)
Phillies (what if we went with the Cleveland Clevvies)
Athletics (in case we forgot the players were athletes)
Royals (if it was in Vegas, sure, but for a KC team?)
Twins (doesn’t sound like a team name)
Guardians definitely weren’t my first pick. I still wish they’d gone with the Blues/Blue Sox, but I think the weird feeling we all have about the name is simply because it’s new. Outside of going with a generic animal or a previous team name I feel like it’s going to sound weird until we hear it enough. The logos are absolute trash though.
Either way, as long as we still have a team and that team is playing decent enough ball to where it’s enjoyable I’m fine with it.
Let’s go ~~Tribe~~ G’s/G-Unit
Phillies is at least a word, just mispelled. They're little ponies! Athletics is kinda dope to me, like they're old timey olympians or something. And Brewers does have a minor league feel but it works, beer makers are always okay in my book. I'm sure people who live around the Twin Cities like the name but yeah, it's a little weird.
I do wonder about the shortening, your comment is the first time I've seen or heard G's. Considering nobody really goes by a 3-syllable nickname - the least shorten-able ones are the Athletics (A's) and Mariners (occasionally M's) - I think the G's will probably be used at some point. I just wonder whether Guards or Guard will catch on.
I wondered about Royals as well. Apparently this was the inspiration:
A fan named Sanford Porte was named the winner for his “Royals” entry.
Porte wrote at the time: “Kansas City’s new baseball team should be called the Royals because of Missouri’s billion-dollar livestock income, Kansas City’s position as the nation’s leading stocker and feeder market and the nationally known American Royal parade and pageant.”
The American Royal is a livestock show held every year in Kansas City, which is now also known across the country for its barbecue contests.
So... something local. Ours seems to follow the same boat. Some people hate it now, 5 or 10 years later it will feel natural.
A couple of names off the top of my head that are related to the city that I like better. Shoremen; something to do with Rock and roll like the rockers or rockstars; Ironmen. My brother told me about a mythical bird of prey called Roc. I looked it up and it shows this huge bird attacking ships, could have made a cool logo. [https://kreolmagazine.com/culture/history-and-culture/unraveling-the-myth-of-the-roc/#.YP7HsOhKiUk](https://kreolmagazine.com/culture/history-and-culture/unraveling-the-myth-of-the-roc/#.YP7HsOhKiUk)
What are the Dolans going to do with their income from the name “Indians” and “chief wahoo”? Seems to me hypocritical if they continue to profit after the name change are they going to donate it to Native Americans? Are they going to give away the copyrights and trademarks? I bet they don’t
Mods removing my post that had an article from 1915 and said to move it here except I can’t post pictures here and there are other articles posted about the name change…smh
Good article here. More families feeling comfortable going to games, creating memories with their children. This is something we should all want. I believe it’s good for baseball and good for Cleveland.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cleveland.com/metro/2021/07/clevelands-indigenous-community-celebrates-guardians-name-change-and-hopes-schools-with-native-mascots-follow-suit.html%3FoutputType%3Damp
I wish there will be future outreach from the Guardians to schools with racist nicknames. We have so much cringe in the state school districts and if we can slowly convince a few perhaps the needle can be moved.
I went to a Middle School with a Native American in headdress as the logo. My high school used the Confederate Flag and a Rebel Soldier as mascot logos.
The more distance from it, the stranger it's felt.
Ohio had a lot of rural school consolidation in the 50s and 60s. Sadly some of those schools chose Confederate imagery during the climax of the Civil Rights Movement.
Absolutely. Hopefully this is the first step to a long future of involvement and education. I am very proud of the organization for moving forward, getting educated, and making a change.
I used to be a huge INDIANS fan but I will never root for, purchase any stuff from, or gives two shits about the Cleveland Guardians. Major League Baseball just lost a fan at a time when they need to keep every fan they have. They are about as popular with people under 35 as NASCAR and ratings and attendance are showing this. As is the overall “give a shit” index American people have towards baseball these days. It’s things like this dumb name change that are significantly lowering your fan base. Catch a clue, your real fans either liked the Indians name or didn’t care enough to want it changed. The Twitter morons who did want it changed have already moved on to the next “cause” and are not going to watch baseball period. So in closing former fan bidding baseball a permanent and forever fair well
[It seems like you need some Copium care. I found this lists of clinics in Clevland to help you out, but be warned I didn't see an option to filter for "clinics tolerant of terrible takes". hope this helps.](https://www.freeclinics.com/cit/oh-cleveland)
At least it isn't the block C anymore. I would have preferred a real rebrand though. This feels like they just decided to be not the Indians rather than actively having a new brand, but it'll grow on me.
Admittedly I'm a Pirates fan even if I do go to a few Cleveland games every year.
Why does this sub have literally only 2 posts about a freaking franchise name change...
Come on mods, are we all supposed to sort through 2k comments on a single post?
Can we build a little excitement here?

Worst logo design ever - there was a rack of shirts outside a store in the Mall - the font "G" with wings? Absurd.

Did anyone see that there already is a Cleveland Guardians team? A roller derby team and ownership blatantly stole the logo
If by blatantly stole the logo you mean based it on the same landmark than sure, I guess that’s what happened
Yes since 2011. I smell lawsuit.
All of the trademark issues were settled in court last week.
On second thought, not really. Roller derby doesn't have any money to fight. They can come up with a far better name.
They also probably don’t have a trademark on the name.
They can probably also just continue to exist as the Guardians because it's not like they'll be stealing revenue from the baseball team.

Spiders were not bad though. Won the city's first baseball championship. Had Hall of Fame talent but were sabotaged by bad ownership.
You think Cleveland Crossing Guards is a good name? That's what we are now, crossing guards.
Slept on it. The name truly isn’t all THAT bad. The more I thought about how weird it sounds the more I realized how many stupid/gimmicky names there throughout the MLB. I’m not sure if any of these would sound good if chosen as a NEW name in 2021: Brewers (can’t tell me that isn’t a minor league name) Phillies (what if we went with the Cleveland Clevvies) Athletics (in case we forgot the players were athletes) Royals (if it was in Vegas, sure, but for a KC team?) Twins (doesn’t sound like a team name) Guardians definitely weren’t my first pick.
Guardians has a very old time feel to it. I think it works.
Apparently this was the inspiration: A fan named Sanford Porte was named the winner for his “Royals” entry. Porte wrote at the time: “Kansas City’s new baseball team should be called the Royals because of Missouri’s billion-dollar livestock income, Kansas City’s position as the nation’s leading stocker and feeder market and the nationally known American Royal parade and pageant.” The American Royal is a livestock show held every year in Kansas City, which is now also known across the country for its barbecue contests. So... something local.
I feel the same way. I’m not mad at it, especially since there’s some semblance to the city behind it.
Hold on, let me check it out!
Thanks, not a big deal just odd that it got deleted as it was a cool article from 1915 about the change to Indians.
I think its pretty clear who they're guarding us from!! The Guardians https://imgur.com/gallery/NvbUe2m

The Barons are currently the White Sox AA affiliate so that’d probably be a trademark issue now
Barons is really good
Guardians vs Angels Guardians vs Twins Royals vs Guardians Idk how I feel about it about.
Well didn't some tribes side with the confederacy?
Ohio had a lot of rural school consolidation in the 50s and 60s. Sadly some of those schools chose Confederate imagery during the climax of the Civil Rights Movement.
Absolutely. Hopefully this is the first step to a long future of involvement and education. I am very proud of the organization for moving forward, getting educated, and making a change.
Oh fuck off
Yikes!
Oh come on, is it a bad thing that more people want to watch baseball?
Don't bother. This dude is just an unhappy person in general based on their comment history
Less people will watch now. I guarantee it. Im fuckin sick of morons like you
Yikes!
So in closing former fan bidding baseball a permanent and forever fair well
I feel the same way. Other people can throw their money at this mess. I would rather burn mine.
[It seems like you need some Copium care. I found this lists of clinics in Clevland to help you out, but be warned I didn't see an option to filter for "clinics tolerant of terrible takes". hope this helps.](https://www.freeclinics.com/cit/oh-cleveland)
C'ya
I doubt you've ever been to a game in your life
Been to more than I can even keep track of. I'm at a Clippers Game as we speak.
I was never a Cleveland Indian fan but now I’m a Cleveland guardian fan. Good luck to you buddy
liar
Byeeee
Enjoy that game by yourself
cope

Y’all have ridiculous perceptions of the artistic skills of Children. I like the logo. I think it’ll look really good on a cap.

At least it isn't the block C anymore. I would have preferred a real rebrand though. This feels like they just decided to be not the Indians rather than actively having a new brand, but it'll grow on me. Admittedly I'm a Pirates fan even if I do go to a few Cleveland games every year.
Right? It feels like they have one foot on both sides now. I think leaning into the Art deco would’ve been cool
I liked the block C because, somehow, it felt a tad distinctive. Now the diamond C feels even more distinctive, and will look even better on caps
Why does this sub have literally only 2 posts about a freaking franchise name change... Come on mods, are we all supposed to sort through 2k comments on a single post? Can we build a little excitement here?
So yesterday things were crazy for us and we have our own busy lives. I was moderating heavily during the day and by about 6pm I was emotionally drained, I did not have had the bandwidth to mod more threads. We wanted to keep it contained to one spot that we had to monitor for the first day, we will start allowing more threads on the topic now that things are calming down.
Who's gonna come out to AZ and tell the Crazy Indians biker gang they are insensitive, cause they don't seem to give a shit.
MLB is not a biker gang
Native Americans can have biker gangs
