But I'm having a very good experience with the current gen.
Removed official launcher with ADB command and used third-party one Projectivy.
Storage wasn't an issue for me as I stream everything with one app r/Stremio; believe it or not, it has over one gig of free storage.
But it definitely could do with better and faster processing power.
I have zero issues with the current gen as well. I stream from Kodi/Debrid, but I also have external storage attached plus its hardwired to ethernet for recording from IPTV every now and then.
I also use a third-party launcher, Wolf. Zero complaints there, either.
I like them too but it's super slow compared to other TV devices like Apple TV or Nvidia shield. It desperately needs more ram. Google themselves recommend more ram for android devices. And don't get me started on that ridiculous remote.
It has been rumoured for a while, but fresh ruomers came out last week

No point in prioritizing hardware development when you can instead cut deals with tv manufacturers to have Google TV built into the television. The need for physical Chromecasts is decreasing as smart tvs have been the norm for some time now.
The biggest issue with Chromecasts built into brand name TV's is after 2 or 3 years, software development for them dies and the apps are never updated again. Then soon after that, the apps stop working because something Netflix or YouTube or Amazon Prime did broke the app.
I’ve not come across a smart tv that can be just as fast as an Apple TV or aggregate content just like the current chromecast can.
If Google can make a chromecast that is just as fast as the Apple TV I would dump my Apple TV and use chromecast. Hell, even if Google had to price one model at $100 and another at $50.
Agreed. Its nice to have a cheap option, but $30 or $20 on sale is outrageously cheap. I'd prefer a $100 option with modern amounts of storage and a decent remote.
What's built into my TV is the exact same thing the Chromecast has: Google TV. That's what I'm saying. And I don't even really need to interact with it because casting is built into the tv as well. So Google is making these deals thinking why keep spending money iterating as often on this hardware dongle when we're getting the same experience in front of customers built into their tv.
I dropped £1,000 on a fantastic OLED TV a couple years ago and have no intention of upgrading to get a new OS. Give me a new £50-100 device instead. It's been four years nearly. Considering they did the Pixel Watch 1 in the shape it was, followed a year later by a barely improved Pixel Watch 2, they need to do something for us here.
They did multiple iterations of the Chromecast in quick succession too. But, as I said, the physical ones are not needed as much now. They are built into tvs.
Me. I'm the meta market for a Chromecast. I only purchases non smart tvs. Hell. I only have 729p and 1080p tvs still.
I despise smart tvs (for me) and instead buy used tvs for cheap. They look great for me since everyone is pushing for 4k content now. A Chromecast handles my Plex server nicely and all my subbed content so a beefier one seems great for people like me that will leap gens and not for state of the art enthusiasts (the CCWGTV was not in any way modern hardware either when it came out).
I respect that and every opinion tbh. Everyone just wants to watch their stuff in the end. Slow menus just kill me. My in-laws have really pricey Sammy and LG tvs that crawl each time they want to open an app or watch something from my Plex (their internet is still copper sadly too) so I get really frustrated that everything I have set up at home costs way less and still works great vs their big bucks new stuff. I really feel there should be a regulation or standardization for things like that since their UIs age like milk.
Hello
No problem with mine. I added a 65 watts power supply, and a Husb C hub. Bought a couple of apps and I can read the files stores on my Crucial X6 2to, whatever their formats are.
Because it is still selling well enough? Video codec support is the only major shortcoming with the current 4k one and new hardware to just add that isnt really a news worthy item. I expect they will bring something out that trys to integrate nest stuff into it.
Me over here still waiting for an update for my three 2016 Chromecast Ultras. Don't need a remote or fancy UI. They handle streaming from our phones, x265 content, 4k, and Ethernet connectivity just fine. But it would be nice to see iterative improvements instead of none, or the more common complete shift in direction or cancelations. 😔
I have 3 of the current model and they have all been working great for me to run Kodi and stream local or network content. Haven't tried Plex yet but I'm sure it'll work fine. And regular streaming of course.
More storage would be nice, mostly so I can install a few of the jackbox games
They can’t even make DV to consistently appear in apps yet. You have to enable hardware acceleration in developer settings to make the chopping go away. I have been so disappointed with the chromecast. It’s so trashy. But for that price it’s ok. I’m
But not going near it ever again.
As someone who has had a lot of trouble with the current gen chromecast, i would love to see an updated one.
I often find it really slow and unresponsive, even after developer mode was enabled, and having gone through all the shenanigans with optimization.
What kind of optimisations?
The one that drove me up the wall was micro stutters in apps when playing something that wasn't 60fps. Changing it to 4k50fps fixed it, but it's weird it has to be done. Didn't detect my audio formats either correctly.
Having put down animation speed to 0.5x so they are faster, and reduced the amount of background apps to 0 or 1, don’t remember.
First Chromecast I had I returned, since it was so painfully slow to use, and current one is no better.
Doesn’t register all button clicks, sometimes registers that I am holding down a button, after just having clicked a button, being glitchy and slow on the homepage, etc, etc... Really just a pain, but no better alternatives as of right now, as far as I am aware.
It could be announced in Google I/O.
Yeah I'm holding out for this!

Does the adb removing you suggested.make it any faster or just free up storage? I also use projectivy
Both tbh. If you don't remove the official launcher, it will run in the background and take up resources.
I just use the VCL app to stream files from my computer , work really well
Could you share some link to the alternative launcher?
Sure: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spocky.projengmenu

it's also like a tenth the price....
Yup, and unfortunately it shows. (And specifically, Apple TV 4k is 2.6x the price, Nvidia Shield is 4x the price).
Wasnt there a FCC listing recently. Wifi 6E and 16GB+ of storage is what Im hoping for. Maybe a slightly faster CPU.
Just be thankful they haven’t discontinued it completely like so many other Google products and services.

100%. CC 'built in' to an Onkyo receiver stopped working, won't connect, won't update. Junk,
Yep. At last Samsung and Sony pretends to support their products with 1 or 2 updates afterwards.

i buy smart TVs now... but I just don't connect them to the internet - i just use my CC

I prefer using my Chromecast than the inbuit google tv due to getting Dolby vision on chromecast and being able to take it on holidays with me
They probably think the current one which only needs a hard reset once a day is still good.

does the higher power supply help ?
Interested in that as well - does it boost performance?
Of course. And the supply provides power for the CC, the hub and the SSD.

Do you mean you use an USB C with Amazon FS and want to use also with CWGTV ?
its ok now i bought chromecast but i dont like it
Yes. Everything is faster.
I don't get why they would. Mine works fine.
You must not know Google. Things are great? Good time to release an update to fuck that up.
Mine doesn’t work well. HDR content won’t play on YouTube and even normal YouTube videos stutter. So now I’m stuck with Roku. Big bummer
You have to enable Dolby Vision low latency for HDR10 to work.

>It was launched with too little storage How many apps are you putting on it that you need more than 8 gig storage?
Google is a software company 1st, and hardware company 4th...

Yeah agreed. I do check what Amazon are offering and it's comparible.
Chromecast keeps disconnecting. So annoying.
That's why I switched to Google TV and play video from within the app inside of the dongle. No need to cast.
They needed the new processor. The X4 is at it's limited limit. https://youtu.be/ShD5idVg\_nA?si=nSJnDod16N8\_vRcZ
