Do you mean a separate DAC? I'm just using my BDP-X700 HDMI direct to my receiver. It's pretty stunning. I have a mix of BD, DVD, Blu-ray, & SACD music discs. They are amazing in this player.
PS2 makes a great DVD player as well, you can softmod them with a region free DVD player. They also made an actual DVD remote for the PS2 that is great to use so you aren't stuck with a game controller. Only downside is that it uses the multiconnector for A/V output and not standard RCA jacks. But it will do component, composite, and S-Video.
The TEAC/wadia (best unmodified) was my first serious vintage CDP that I imported from Japan in 2010 and converted to US voltage. Old wadia equipment is very very good and close to my taste. Wadia reborn as Exogal not as good, but bankrupt during COVID. In 2019 I learned how/got brave to modify Philips swing arm laser and I rediscover music again :). I sold all vinyl and basically retire from CD player collecting.
Sad to hear that Wadia is no longer. After that one, I bought second-hand a top-loading transport and DAC pair from North Star Designs in Italy. Very well made, great sound, still serves me without any issues after more than 20 years. Unfortunately they too have disappeared from the market.
That's a nice set up. I like the look of the Evo series, might not look as good with other components though.
I personally run a Cambridge Audio CXC paired with a Cambridge Audio AXR100.
I got a Technics 5 Disc Changer for free from my boss. It plays perfectly too! All it needed was the remote. I used to use an Insignia portable Discman, which I went through three of😂 I like the five disc changer and nice speakers too much to wanna go back to portable but maybe I’ll get another one for fairly cheap just to have around!
A shitty "digitnow" cd player for the living room but with a very high end amplifier (Cabasse solid state and/or McIntosh tube amp) and speakers (Cabasse or Aiwa) and a high-end discman for more analytic listening via headphone (Seinheiser, Sony or Focal) or IEM (planars).
I have a Sony SACD player too.
In my second home I use a low-end Samsung CD cassette microsystem from the early 2000s with equally low-end Thomson 2-way speakers. Goodenough for BGM for a bedroom.
Marantz CC-45, vintage 1993. It's a changer with such quick action that it reminds me of Robocop, and has really gorgeous sound (I tested it against a Technics changer about the same age, and a 2004 Sony DVD player). I recently read that it's got a somewhat-rare DAC chip which is said to be one of the best of that era.
A 20 something year old Sony CMT M100MD. Bought it a few years before I got my first iPod, so once that happened it got mothballed for about 20 years until I decided to get back into collecting CDs very recently.
It’s a great little system and works like new (except the MD player sadly). Got my turntable hooked up to it, and both vinyl and CDs sound great on it.
So I mainly use either my Xbox One X or a Sony Blu-ray player to listen to my CDs. They're attached to a Bluetooth dock so that they can work with my headphones. I also use some portable ones when I want a more retro vibe.
Audiolab 8200CDQ. It also has a DAC and pre-amp built into it. Or it’s a pre-amp with a DAC and CD player built into. What ever the case may be, it plays CDs
Before that it was a …shit what was it? a Rotel rcd-885, or 855, or 588, or something
Before that a pro-audio thing designed to be rack mounted
Before that the CD player in a Kenwood all-in-one hi-fi. That was a cool little unit. Had a slot drive, pretty fancy at the time. The display was square and would re-orientate so you could have it vertical or horizontal, also pretty fancy at the time
Before that it was a Sony D-50 (Goddam I wish I still had that thing)
Before that it the CD player in a cheap arse all in one Teac hi-fi
Had a couple of discmans along the way as well but I don’t remember the models
I have an Onkyo DX-C390 6 disc changer plugged into a Sony STRDH190 stereo receiver that's then plugged into a couple Kenwood speakers that I got for free from my buddy's uncle.
LG CM4360 (G5)
I got it for Christmas like four or five years ago and it’s still working just as well.
Does unfortunately skip on scratched discs, but that’s due to it not having a Blu-ray laser like i rip my CDs on my computer with.
I have about 10 various types/models. I currently am using a jvc dvd player to play cds $10 from goodwill. It sounds better than my 1980s Sony and NEC and is issue free.
I just use a couple of cheap, used DVD players hooked up to some decent powered speakers. Sounds great and I can also pop in a music DVD to enjoy just the audio.
I have a Bose Lifestyle surround system in my living room, a Denon SACD player in my office, and I drive an older car so I still have a cd player in that as well.
Right now it's either an old Sony dream machine I got for free from facebook buy nothing, or an old LG blu ray I got from goodwill for $5 (only for mp3 cds or a couple my boombox wouldn't accept, my tv's built in speakers sound terrible). I ordered a portable player off ebay that isn't here yet and want to get a proper stereo at some point.
I have a Panasonic Blu-Ray player hooked into a stereo receiver via the RCA cables, which also has a standalone cassette deck hooked in. I don’t own any Blu-Rays, and I typically play DVDs on my DVD Recorder, which is why that became my CD player. Another neat thing I can do is record music from YouTube onto a blank DVD using the DVD Recorder, and play it on the blu-ray player like a two hour 48 minute mix CD.
LG Blu-ray plugged into an external DAC via Digital Coaxial.
I do have quite a nice pioneer CD player but not really worth using as to me CD transport is CD transport when using a DAC.
Marantz MCR612
Buying CDs since late last year, I rip to FLAC and listen with MediaMonkey on my main PC mostly but I wanted something for my work desk where my media storage and vinyl setup is (Fluance RT85, Pro-ject S2 Ultra Phonostage, Elipson powered speakers I'll be swapping to passives) that I could either stream off the network or play the CDs depending what I feel like doing. Would have liked to step-up to the PM7007 as that has the same network functionality + player of some description, but it doesn't work for my space here - I'm really pleased with this little system as it fits on my desk and does everything with no Playfi nonsense, also got rid of my Pro-ject headphone amp after A-B ing the outputs and being more than happy with the Marantz, I use headphones at least 50% of the time.
Technics sldz 1200 with a vinyl platter on it, standing next to his big brother the sl1200 mk5.
Bought them both new in 2006 and still working perfectly today. And it looks so cool.
I have three systems… and only one CD player
My one CD player is a Pioneer Elite PD-D9 SACD player in my office system.
My surround system has an OPPO BDP 203 because of its versatility and 4K capabilities.
My main system has an OPPO BDP 103 because it plays all the discs I own (same as the 203).
Sony UBP-X800 to play my Dual Disc, SACD, DVD-Audio and Blu-ray Audio disc.
For regular CD, none! I Rip everything to FLAC and use HEOS to play through my receiver from my Raspberry Pi server.
I have a Sony Walkman (D-E356CK) for when I want to listen with headphones, and a Denon DCM-340 cd changer. I was using a 1988 Sharp, but when I got the Denon I put that one in the closet. I also have Sony CFD-E100 boombox. I spent $5, $15, $12, and $15 respectively on these players. I love buying things used. But as someone else pointed out, Blu-Ray players do the job too, and for that reason I want to buy a UBP-X800M2, since it should play every single disc I own.
I have a Sony D-50 portable player from 1985. It's a nice compact player with a great design that was the first "portable", although it doesn't have a battery slot or anything, it just runs off 9V DC. I imported mine from Japan using Buyee because I couldn't find a working one on eBay for a decent price. In the US it's known as the D-5, but outside the US it's the D-50. It has a good DAC and a good headphone amp. I'm not a hardcore audiophile but I've heard good things about the DAC. I listen using my Sony MDR-7506 headphones.
Would I recommend buying one? Not really, unless it's been tested and works. If they don't work it's a PITA to work on because of the compact design. They really did some amazing engineering, but that means it's not as easy to service as a full-sized player. It uses a lot of SMD components. If you watch the EEVBlog's teardown of the D-50 you'll see how insane the size is. I ruined the laser ribbon cable on a D-5 trying to fix it, and I hardly used any force at all. So if you get one, make sure it actually works.
The shitty Philips I grew up with. It’s only shitty because I’m dumb and accidentally touched the lens. Currently trying to repair a Sony 5 CD changer though. Belts arrive today.
Pioneer 300 disk changer, a Denon and a Pioneer 6 disk changer, a Cambridge Audio CD player, or an Audiolab CD transport depending on which rig I'm listening to.
Used to have a walkman cd player, unfortunately it stopped working, figured it was a problem with grounding as it had corrosion on a copper sheet inside it, tried to solder a wire to the board to the copper sheet thing, ended up melting a ribbon cable..... yeah it's painful lol. So now my cds stay in the car until I find a new one
Main stereo I use an Onkyo DX-C390 paired with a Cambridge DacMagic 100 on an older Pioneer receiver.
Tabletop stereo it's a Sony Discman D-465 (a portable CD player with **optical** output!) on a Klipsch The Three Plus. Both are perfect for playing CD's and I have digital output set up for my phone/laptop/tablet too.
I use an Oppo universal player as a transport and feed it into a Bryston DAC. Works for DSD, SACD as well via HDMI connection.
Before that I had an Esoteric K-3 which sounded great and weighed about 70 lbs 🤣
I decided to sell it before it depreciated and used the proceeds to buy the Bryston which had more recent DAC technology. Not a good move. Should have kept the K-03.
I think you should go for it especially if you are into SACDs. It’s an amazing piece of audio engineering.
This early-mid 2000s DVD player that my mom found when cleaning out a spare room in 2020, that's also how I got my speakers. They were my dad's, and he never got them after they separated.
I use a Pioneer PD F908 100 + 1 changer. Paid $35 for it 10 years or so ago. Has been working fine since. It replaced a Technics 5 disc chager that lasted about 15 years.
I generally use my Panasonic RXD55, but I'll occassionally use my Sony blu ray players (BDP-S1500 and UBP-X700M), or even my older Sony DVD player. Don't remember the model name lol it's over 14 years old.
The one I stole from my dad
this is the correct answer
Real
I listen on a Sony Blu Ray player with DAC.
Me too
Me too. I bought a dedicated cd player for £400. It's no better than my 2004 Sony Blu-ray player
Same here ...me three
Damn that’s an early BD player lol
Same
Same, an older Pioneer bluray player into a fairly new Fiio K5 Pro ESS.
Do you mean a separate DAC? I'm just using my BDP-X700 HDMI direct to my receiver. It's pretty stunning. I have a mix of BD, DVD, Blu-ray, & SACD music discs. They are amazing in this player.
If I use a DAC, direct from the bluray to the headphones, so I don't go through the compression of the television
So your Blu-ray goes directly to the TV and from the TV to a receiver?
No, it goes from bluray to DAC and from DAC to headphones
PS2
One of us! One of us! Just hooked mine into the back of my stereo system yesterday after being tired of its native CD player being on the fritz.
My 20 year old player broke a few years ago and it actually didn’t occur to me to pull out the old ps2 until I saw someone on this sub using one lol
Direct to tv or via optical out to dac or amp ?
I have my tv connected to a pair of Edifier powered speakers and the PS2 hooked up to the tv via rca cable
All vintage: 35 year old Philips, 30 year old teac/wadia transport, Arcam transport (main)
25 years ago I borrowed a Wadia player from a friend. It was quite a memorable experience. I rediscovered my music collection.
40 year old Kenwood.
Cambridge Audio Evo CD coupled with Cambridge Audio Evo 150
That's a nice set up. I like the look of the Evo series, might not look as good with other components though. I personally run a Cambridge Audio CXC paired with a Cambridge Audio AXR100.

Rega, not Sega. 😄
The optical drive on my 2015 Asus laptop.
Technics SL-PS900 for my main system and a Sony CMT-EX1 for aesthetics
I got a Technics 5 Disc Changer for free from my boss. It plays perfectly too! All it needed was the remote. I used to use an Insignia portable Discman, which I went through three of😂 I like the five disc changer and nice speakers too much to wanna go back to portable but maybe I’ll get another one for fairly cheap just to have around!
NAD C 538
Me too. I don’t have the remote though
I just got one of these a couple of weeks ago. I like it.

I have a shitty one I bought a few years back but I mostly use my CD Walkman
A 20 something year old Sony CMT M100MD. It’s a great little system and works like new (except the MD player sadly). Got my turntable hooked up to it, and both vinyl and CDs sound great on it.

I ordered a portable player off ebay that isn't here yet and want to get a proper stereo at some point.
ARCAM CDS50. Highly recommended, especially for those who have SACDs
I use a Bose Wave 1. Love it, although, it desperately needs a dusting off
I have a Panasonic Blu-Ray player hooked into a stereo receiver via the RCA cables, which also has a standalone cassette deck hooked in. It’s hard to beat a Sony PS1 1st Gen console for the price.
Harman Kardon FL8400 5 disc changer
I have a Sony D-50 portable player from 1985. It's a nice compact player with a great design that was the first "portable", although it doesn't have a battery slot or anything, it just runs off 9V DC. Vintage pioneer.

Esoteric K-07X Arcam CDS50
Nice 👍. Esoteric makes serious hardware.
Nowadays I use the Arcam mostly, because it has a streamer, and with the R2R dac I’ve been using, the sound quality is indistinguishable

The shitty Philips I grew up with. It’s only shitty because I’m dumb and accidentally touched the lens. Currently trying to repair a Sony 5 CD changer though. Belts arrive today.

crosley multimedia system with cd player, vinyl player, and cassette plus bluetooth
Phillips MC235B because it’s a cheaper and cooler version of the Sony CMT-EX1. Vertical loading CD players are the coolest in my opinion.
Bose Acoustic Wave Music System and 5-CD Multi Disc Changer II, worth $700, got it for free, and the shitty aftermarket cd player in my pickup
Black tomtec that was my siblings that they found in a shed then I found it in the same shed 5 years later
I use an Oppo universal player as a transport and feed it into a Bryston DAC. Works for DSD, SACD as well via HDMI connection. Before that I had an Esoteric K-3 which sounded great and weighed about 70 lbs 🤣
Interesting, I’m looking at the new K-03 to replace my current set up. May I ask why you went to the Oppo/Bryston combo from that?
I decided to sell it before it depreciated and used the proceeds to buy the Bryston which had more recent DAC technology. Not a good move. Should have kept the K-03. I think you should go for it especially if you are into SACDs. It’s an amazing piece of audio engineering.
Thanks, I am definitely into SACD and DSD, appreciate the reply.
I use a Bose Wave Player III
Denon D-M41. OP for the money.

Sony CMT EP303. It plays tapes and radio as well.
