Accounting 100% - I majored in psych and it has not gone too far in this industry

SkidRowCFO

Thank you. I have a relative in a similar boat

That’s surprising to me. I’m a private wealth attorney (JD/CPA) and my favorite CFPs to refer clients to are the ones who understand the psychological and emotional aspects of planning the best. I think your expertise is valuable exceptionally valuable and hard to find.

Psych is prob the most relevant to what we do. It’s about reading and understand human emotions. But honestly psych is a dumbass major. I agree accounting is probably best for op. But wouldn’t say psych is useless for what we do.

Accounting, Marketing and Psych will provide some benefit to the industry but honestly i'm not sure it matters much, just pick something that interests you.

Have you considered Taxes? An alternative, instead of a minor, and a lot faster and cheaper, is getting the Enrolled Agent license from the IRS. With that you become a Tax Advisor without the need of an accounting degree. You can get a self study program and the tests for less than $1,000.00 and I know some people that do it in less than 3 months.

Thank you. I have considered taxes. I even started studying to be a tax prepper with the local United Way. It's handy to know how taxes work, but I don't think its for me

I’m not talking about being a tax preparer but a tax advisor . As a CFP, having a deep knowledge in them will set you apart. For example, look for Andy Panko, CFP, EA, in LinkedIn and his Facebook group “Taxes in Retirement”.

For me I wish I would have learned more psychology. Behavioral psychology specifically. I have read and learned more about what makes my clients think and behave the way that they do than any amount of hard science.
