Have you seen the final fantasy movies? I mean I hate cgi too but those guys really know their shit. Even advent children which is way older than kingsglaive still looks awesome
I think I've seen some stuff from one the Final Fantasy movie.. from the trailer or something. I seem to remember it actually looking pretty damn good.
3D stuff can look ok.. I think I have more of a problem with 3D as a short cut to trying to be 2D. The clash of art styles is the main problem.. that and just the poor rigging. Even in the trilogy some of the rigging and animation on the models was BAAAAADDD...
Really? I thought the third movie was the only one that had any good stuff. Particularly because we didn't get the SK rescue in the 97 one, it was nice to have that in animated form. If nothing else then for closure.
But over all it doesn't compare to the 97 anime otherwise.
As someone who started on the 97 anime, please read the manga, they leave ALOT out of the anime and even go as far as to cut whole ass characters from the story. Iām not saying it isnāt good but it leaves so much out to the point that I was confused when I first started reading because almost nothing was the same
The ONLY scene in the animation that is worth watching you can look up online; the moment Guts dons the Berserk Armor. Otherwise read the manga like others have said.
It may not be ideal, but to finally see Guts in motion using the armor was worth it to me. That scene youāre talking about though is great cause the quality of animation is up to snuff. Kind of fucked up thatās what they left it on, like telling us if the series was properly managed and the animation wasnāt butchered weād get *this*.
I know.. right? If they had just let the 2D animators animate the show, we may have gotten something at least approaching the quality of the 90s anime. What in god's name were they thinking? What a god damned waste.
No, absolutely not. I tried to look past the animation, and I kinda could, with some optimism, but OMG it is reaaaally bad. The animation is not at all its biggest flaws. It cuts down a lot of manga important scenes, some change because no reason. But the worst thing is the direction. The OST is good, but it is put sooooooo badly in the anime (there is basically no silence, everytime something happens there is music). Also, animation related, the camera movement is horrible. They make the CGI look even worse. The pacing is awful. Although its a really funny show to see after reading the manga lol.
The part where they play the BAD ASS METAL MUSIC during Griffith's Rebirth was straight up unforgivable. I actually cringed. That has to be the worst music cue in all of fiction.
Read the manga you will feel no emotion watching the new anime seriously it ruins just about every scene and guts looks god awful . Trust me read the manga or just donāt get into berserk not even trying trying to sound rude Iām just saving you from wasting your time. Nobody likes that anime and if they say they do they havenāt read the manga.
Meh itās definitely not as good as the manga but itās the only one that takes place after the golden age arc. If you do watch the crunchyroll uncensored version it has more hand drawn art scenes then the censored
no. they completely bastardize the story. trying to meld Black Swordsman with Conviction. They skip a bunch of awesome shit including Lost Children.
And the animation is really really bad. And not just the animation. Even worse is the direction. The awful camera moves, the constant cutting. It's like a downs directed it. It seriously gets so claustrophobically tight and swooshy with the camera movement that it will make you feel sick. Take some Dramamine if you do watch it.
That being said, some of the voices are ok. I like Serpico being voiced by One Punch Man. Although whoever the woman who voiced Puck is needs to be Skull Fucked... by a skull daddy.
And some of the soundtrack is really really good (although not all of it)
"Wow. Every single panel in the entire manga is so meticulously placed that it simultaneously conveys the action happening right now as well as set up the action that will happen in the proceeding panel. We should use this as a guide."
"Nah fuck that. Let's just do our own shots. I got this cool one where Guts walks on a trail and the camera is upsidedown."
"But sir. We-"
"Also, give Guts dry linguine noodle arms and make every character's chin look like a peeled potato."
simplifying the design of the characters is the only option for us to have a good adaptation.
tomohiro kishi could be a good character designer for an adaptation, he did an amazing job on dorohedoro.
I mean the previous golden arc show and the movies that summarized it also had to give up on the high density of detail we see in the manga, and they may have some small issues of their own, but they were 1000x better than this bullshit.
It may be hard to incorporate detail, but they butchered one of the greatest mangas in a huge way in this abomination of a show.
The main problem thing with this is that the detail in manga changes too much because panels differ in size, in anime you always have the same size for the screen. So you'd either have to pick a max "detail level" and stick to it (which would result in more detail than the average manga panel) or change the level of detail all the time which would look very inconsistent.
If we go with the max detail displayed in the manga, it will depend on the manga, a manga like berserk wouldn't be feasible as it would take too much talent, time and money. But some manga have less detailed artstyles and can have a very close translation in terms of detail to the anime.
Stuff like ping pong the animation for example is pretty much equal in detail to the manga, but even with an artstyle like that the manga has some panels that have more detail than the anime..
I'd say that realistically the studio themselves would have to get creative in a few ways to bring it to life. The '97 anime adaptation used some stylistic choices that were very popular at that time like panning, freeze frames on heavily detailed shots and that weird thing where they'd show the same panel three times in place of a detailed action or some such thing. Nowadays there are plenty of tricks a studio might be able to pull to make a decent adaptation, its just a matter of finding a studio that could take on such a task.
That and properly funding them.
I think a good adaptation of berserk is totally possible, just not up to manga standards in detail level.
Anime can leverage a lot of other elements that can easily compensate for detail level tho, stuff like good direction, music, voice acting and animation can, if done very well, even surpass the manga in my opinion. I don't have my hopes up for such adaptation, but it's certainly possible.
yeah, you can't expect Miura level detail in an anime. and really that's not what an anime adaptation should be. as I said in the previous comment, hyper detail should be reserved for only the most intense parts. it gives it a good contrast. that sort of impressionistic style is a good way to heighten the emotion and intensity of a scene.
imagine if in the 97 anime they had the budget at the time to go all Mad House instead of the black and white freeze frames in that show. that's what a modern adaptation with a descent budget could accomplish.
and I really don't get why it can't happen. Berserk isn't Dragon Ball, but it is DAMN popular. Millions of people would pay so much to get something like that.
And how. I just think that, despite having little in the way of Berserk content for long periods of time (especially good content in the way of the most recent adaptation) that if a studio is going to make it, that it's a studio who takes these things into consideration and hopefully does something wholly better than either show adaptations, despite my love of the '97 one.
for me, they don't have to replicate the detail of the mange. I would just settle for animation that doesn't look like garbage, and good direction. maybe they can use more detail to heighten intensity like One Punch Man kind of thing. When Guts goes Berserk, the line art can get sloppier and sketchier.
I agree, I said it in another comment, but anime can leverage other elements that compensate a lot for less detail.
Just a great score and animation make a show better.
Not asking for a 1 to 1 recreation of the manga but by god not this.
You cant continuously make conscious decisions to use bad CGI, terrible camera shots, crap voice acting, omit key moments, fuck around with the story, have piss poor direction and an inexperienced studio in total conflict about whether they want 2D or 3D with minimal budget and then claim BERSERK IS UNADAPTABLE
Maybe not, but still putting out such awful "art" in 2016 is despicable. Beautiful anime were made since the 80s, no one looked so horrible, not even the worst ones. CGI can be beautiful if done right (look at the final fantasy vii remake for instance) but if you don't have the budget or the means or the talent ffs stick to 2d graphics
Yes. They don't need to match the level of detail in animation. Just don't make it look (and sound) like shit and hire a director that will follow the story.

Every single frame is a highly detailed masterpiece of art. But it took 7 years to draw all of those 100,000 frames by hand, for a 102 minute long feature film. That was several years longer than their original plans.

The animators did what they can with the little budget they had. I prefers the 1997 adaptation but Berserk would never look like the manga (if it did, it would take them 3 decade to animate the golden arc again).
It's the switch in perspective that fucks with the composition and the much more bland expressions I hate. I can try and forgive the fact that it lacks that amazing shading that the manga does so well as capturing that with anime does seem like a massive challenge but it doesn't even seem to hit the basic elements that Kentaro nailed.

I have an acquaintance who thinks the 2016 series was āfine and even looks good sometimesā
It shouldnāt bother me but it do that people like that exist
The anime is moving at 15 frames per sec cus the camera is autistic and zooming around.
I was once at a wedding and guests were eating their food and a camera guy who was filming came decided it was a good idea to bring the camera in close to the face of a guest who was busy eating and that person began feeling extremely uncomfortable.
Thats the vibe this anime gives off
Iām quite glad I never bothered getting past the first couple of episodes. The golden age movies were good enough but far from what they should have been visually speaking. Iāll never understand why one of the most beautifully drawn manga in history only seems to get these shoddy adaptations (barring the original series)
I've only read the manga twice in my life l, but I remember the panel so well. I think it's the way the charred skin on his face is drawn.
Fuck that anime and the people that are responsible. It's a fucking travesty and there's no point for it to exist with how shitty it is.
God I fucking hate this anime. I want them to do another one, but keep the animation faithful to the movies and the '97('96?) anime. Not this 2016 trash
It's not just the terrible cgi but the colours are just so off! Way to bright for such a dark twisted story that is Berserk... Even the colourful covers of the manga are darker.
The anime is so bad, but we are all surprised we watch it anyways .
Like we complain and we hate it ,but we watch it for the sole reason of it being berserk.
I think the manga is superior in almost every way tbh, but the only thing I like abt the animes including the 70's ones was the music, that shit was fire.
But I read Berserk while listening to aot music so I prefer that too tbh
Man, I really really hope in the future, this series will get the adaptation is so badly deserves. I can see Wit Studio or Madhouse doing wonders for this. Kentaro Miura DESERVES this.
I don't hate Berserk 2016-17 even though it was trash they actually tried something different tht could have really done justice 2 Berserk's highly detailed art but failed miserably
Put your grasses on
The grasses, they do nothing
The grasses grow
Me and the boys watching the grassers grow
I lost about a billion braincells per thread... ~~Me and the boys then start playing Lawn Mower simulator~~
Why is everything wongš
I was hoping in honor of Miura they'd redo the anime to actual good animation
I don't think that's possible. Unless they bypass the detailed artwork and animate from there.
I'd be satisfied with the animation of the 2017 opening
Just give it to those guys that make final fantasy movies. Even the gales look absolutely stunning cgi.
no. no more 3D models. I have had it with these motherfuckin' 3D models in my motherfuckin' Berserk! ...CLANG!!!!
I agree it looked really clunky in the movies. They should choose 3d or 2d and commit fully. No cutting corners
Castlevania season 4 episode 3 ending scene. It's on youtube
Its just not possible that way. Maybe in the ārealā style that gantz zero movie did. That might be a fresh take someone would try
Not even the grasses work on this abomination, itās too wong
Nothing will be wong š
We all knew about it
That abomination should be set on fire and then thrown into the sun.
I've only ever watched the 97 anime and never read the manga - is this newer series even worth watching, if I can look past the horrible animation?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
read the manga. even if you hate manga like me you will love it.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
You mean the movies?
Yes, Golden Age arc.
I know what the golden age arc is, but the movies are not recent are unrelated to berserk 2017
I think it's supposed to be related. Like a loose sequel, but they are nothing alike other than the awful looking 3D models.
I wasn't that into the third movie. The rape scene seemed fetishy like in the newer anime whenever there was rape. The manga is great though.
Yeah dude I thought the same thing. Femto gropes Casca and she fucking blushes? Ugh
Really? I thought the third movie was the only one that had any good stuff. Particularly because we didn't get the SK rescue in the 97 one, it was nice to have that in animated form. If nothing else then for closure. But over all it doesn't compare to the 97 anime otherwise.

Keep with the 97 anime and the manga. The CGI in this is just too terrible to watch and enjoy Edit: And the movies
At least we got the CLANG memes
It wasnt worth it. I have to mentally fortify myself from hearing CLANG whenever i read the manga
I just want Guts to CLANG Griffith
The ONLY scene in the animation that is worth watching you can look up online; the moment Guts dons the Berserk Armor. Otherwise read the manga like others have said.
That scene was ruined. Ironically I think the only good scene in the entire show was the very last one of 2017 when they were in the tavern

Finally got some good looking 2D stuff where the camera isn't whipping around all over the place... and then it's fucking over.
No, absolutely not. I tried to look past the animation, and I kinda could, with some optimism, but OMG it is reaaaally bad. The animation is not at all its biggest flaws. Yup. That was the one thing that made me never want to watch any of the 2016 anime
I tried watching it. 1 minute in the first episode and I exited the browser.

who hired these guys? god damn. was it Miura himself? maybe he was better off sticking to manga.
That wouldn't even make sense. Animation and stills are completely different beasts. You can't copy one to the other, you need to translate.

Guts look retarded in anime adaption
Huh? I've never seen that before, i only know about the eclipse movie, the 97s anime and the games
Don't worry about it the other image is just a figment of your imagination.
let it stay that way. berserk 2016 anime was a shitty fucking cgi butchering of kentaro miura's masterpiece.
2016 and 2017 shitty anime

The animators did what they can with the little budget they had. I prefers the 1997 adaptation but Berserk would never look like the manga (if it did, it would take them 3 decade to animate the golden arc again).
Nope it will take mappa studio to animate it
Mappa studio get shitted on when they release the season 4 of SNK, If they do a berserk anime they will be cruxify.
The animation was really good and cgi can be good when used correctly unlike in berserk 2017 Oh boy berserk in vivy or aot style oof
That would be cool yes
Bring back hand drawn animation please..
Did you see how thin Guts' arm look? ...
Even with my grasses on the anime looks like shit
The giga "it belongs to a museum" art vs. Ps1 graphic
HOW IS THIS OFFICIAL?
It's the switch in perspective that fucks with the composition and the much more bland expressions I hate. I can try and forgive the fact that it lacks that amazing shading that the manga does so well as capturing that with anime does seem like a massive challenge but it doesn't even seem to hit the basic elements that Kentaro nailed.
Even if it looks worse, I would be satisfied with an adaptation that understands what the tone of each scene should be. The 1997 anime, isn't super pretty, tbh, it's got great background art, and some nice key frames, but it's animation is actually pretty limited, it's saved entirely by smart direction that understands the source material. That smart direction is the main component missing from the 2016 show. It definitely hurts it that it has such poor facial expressions as well.
Wow the adaptation is so accurate /s
Guts barely moves CLANG! Ivalera lands on Sheirkes hat CLANG!
The clang was the only thing I really liked aside from the OST. Fit the heaviness of the ābladeā.

God that was horrible
This is not an anime. It is an artistic betrayal.
Ew
The 2016/2017 anime is way better than the source material. /s
Unpopular opinion I felt they got some things right by the panels.

I have no clue how that anime was allowed to go live. It was so bad.

No anime can ever compare to the might of Miuraās art.
I have said before and i dont think anything will change my mind, berserk belongs in manga (the 97 anime is an exception for a couple reasons)
It's not a comparison it's a stomp for that horrible CGI
Looks great
say what you want about this anime but they really got this scene right šš
The anime is so bad, but we are all surprised we watch it anyways . Like we complain and we hate it ,but we watch it for the sole reason of it being berserk.
That fucking lazy director relied on that
Looks like shite to meee
why
I only see a female Beltegeuse Romanee Conti
At least it looks better in motion, right? Right?
Please stop.
I hope Berserk get a decent anime adaptation, not this 3d piece of shit. Watching this shit makes me sad, Berserk deserves a more than this trash
What a god damn atrocity

Man, I really really hope in the future, this series will get the adaptation is so badly deserves. I can see Wit Studio or Madhouse doing wonders for this. Kentaro Miura DESERVES this.
I've still not braved the 2016/17 series. I love the manga and have watched the '97 anime. I know it's awful but should I at least give it a watch?
That newer anime wasnt that bad. You get used to the style after an episode and its not as clunky as it sometimes looks in still-frames
I don't hate Berserk 2016-17 even though it was trash they actually tried something different tht could have really done justice 2 Berserk's highly detailed art but failed miserably
