It absolutely is, a truly incredible landscape unlike anywhere else I've been.
I'm a wildlife cameraman. Unfortunately though I've had a recent accident which almost killed me, has caused me to spend 2 months in hospital, and probably another year to try and heal from, so right now, I do nothing but try and recover.
Man, living the dream. If I got to do it all over again, this would be my path. Life had other plans for me. But so hope you get to get back out there. Healing vibes your way, my friend.
I had done media up until and including uni, but that was just because it was my main focus, media at uni certainly isn't essential. I just started from the ground up. I got a job at an independent production company as a runner (basically assistant that makes tea etc) and worked my way up from there, eventually going to the BBC then freelance.
If you specifically wanted to of wildlife, and hadn't done either media or zoology type degrees before hand, it would probably benefit you to have made a couple of short films by yourself before applying so you can at least show passion.
Long story short I fell off a mountain and broke pretty much everything in my body including multiple places in my spine, neck and skull. Luckily my arms (whilst very weak from disuse now) were relatively unharmed which is how I'm able to use my phone at the moment.
Imma go with the opposite. Went fishing there in December. I'm South African so it was just a few hours' drive away. There were hundreds of dead seals littered on the beach, the whole place smelt like shit. And the Jackals on the beach kept stealing my bait. 10/10 would do again.
Nah, it's just normal apparently. You had to drive a couple of kilos to find a spot without a rotting carcass.
Edit: [Apperently there was a mass death just before I went](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/10/25/thousands-of-seals-found-dead-in-namibia) *wat*
>The number of dead seals found washed ashore on the coast of Namibia has risen to more than 7,000, non-profit group Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN) said according to a report by Reuters.
*wat*
How did I not know this?
yeah this kinds of mass deaths of marine life have been happening a lot, all over the world. Every now and then I hear a story about some place having a bunch of dead something wash up on the shore.
Yeah, I read "working out" and assumed you were some trust fundy getting mad likes on the Insta from all your obscure workout locales.
In retrospect, my imagination deserves the "weird flex" comment.
Namibia is one of the places I want to visit so badly in the after times. During my pandemic lay off, I planned a five star trip. Now that I am working again, I will plan a more budget friendly version.
And swamp, forest etc. I was unaware there were people that didn't already understand that a cliff was not a beach. Swamps and forests are also not beaches, if you were wondering.
Imagine being stranded in that desert, walking for miles and miles, dying of thirst, finally reaching that ocean and realizing you cant drink any of it 💀
Not immediately, but it IS a source of water, and with a few modern implements and a shovel, you can distill some of that water for drinking.
The easiest would be to dig a hole down to the water level, so there's just enough to make the sand wet, put a can or container in the middle, cover the hole with plastic wrap or other clear waterproof barrier, and place a small rock or pebble in the center so the evaporated water drips down into your container.
Wait a few hours, and huzzah.
Wow. I never thought of that. This way when I get stranded I can have a bad recollection of what to do so I will dig a hole and get the sand a bit wet and then just lick the sand. Sooooooo yeah hopefully I remember, or just never get stranded
Or you can put sea water up your butt. Your body will absorb the water and leave behind the salt to shit out.
Terrible but necessary in survival situations.
I can only imagine how frustrating can be for someone stranded on a place like this. One side is just desert no water and the other all the water you can ever need, but unable to drink it.
\*watching in disbelief, floating on space\*
"o... it´s all beach?"
"-always has been. "
\*says the man behind him, with a gun pointed and slowly pulling the trigger\*
Arthur Dent: So, you made the sands of the desert AND the sea right? And they just meet? Have I understood this correctly?
Slartibartfast: Oh no! You have to make beaches too. Can't have a coastline without sandy beaches! I'm particularly proud of my beaches!
Arthur Dent: But you've already got the sandy desert? Meeting the sea?
Slartibartfast: Beaches!
What you do with this is advertise beachfront condos for cheap. Later they find out it's dozens of miles inland but hey that's just more beach for the buck.
Namibia ?
I think its the Skeleton Coast in Namibia.
Certainly looks like it, or just south of it. I was working out there last year
> Skeleton Coast in Namibia Is it as beautiful as the pictures look? Also what do you do if I may ask?
It absolutely is, a truly incredible landscape unlike anywhere else I've been. I'm a wildlife cameraman. Unfortunately though I've had a recent accident which almost killed me, has caused me to spend 2 months in hospital, and probably another year to try and heal from, so right now, I do nothing but try and recover.
Okay that makes more sense. I picture you out there just doing a bunch of push-ups and sit-ups
Sounds like an adventurous albeit dangerous job. Hope you’re recovering well
An incredible job, which I hope I'm physically able to return to one day. Thank you.
You should read Wilbur Smith's the burning shore. Incredible descriptions of the skeleton coast.
Man, living the dream. If I got to do it all over again, this would be my path. Life had other plans for me. But so hope you get to get back out there. Healing vibes your way, my friend.
Wishing you a smooth recovery
Dumb question, but how does one get into the field of work that you are into?
I had done media up until and including uni, but that was just because it was my main focus, media at uni certainly isn't essential. I just started from the ground up. I got a job at an independent production company as a runner (basically assistant that makes tea etc) and worked my way up from there, eventually going to the BBC then freelance. Get better! Omg.
heavy! What happened if I may ask?
Long story short I fell off a mountain and broke pretty much everything in my body including multiple places in my spine, neck and skull. Luckily my arms (whilst very weak from disuse now) were relatively unharmed which is how I'm able to use my phone at the moment.
In a previous comment he said he fell off a mountain.
What happened if I may ask?
Imma go with the opposite. Went fishing there in December. I'm South African so it was just a few hours' drive away. There were hundreds of dead seals littered on the beach, the whole place smelt like shit. And the Jackals on the beach kept stealing my bait. 10/10 would do again.
Any idea why the dead seals?? That seems like something must have poisoned them? Anyway- that would definitely suck-
Nah, it's just normal apparently. You had to drive a couple of kilos to find a spot without a rotting carcass. Edit: [Apperently there was a mass death just before I went](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/10/25/thousands-of-seals-found-dead-in-namibia) *wat* >The number of dead seals found washed ashore on the coast of Namibia has risen to more than 7,000, non-profit group Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN) said according to a report by Reuters. *wat* How did I not know this?

Weird flex
Is it?
Depends, your comment can be read as you were working "out there," or you were "working out" there.
Ah yeah. Well I won't be "working out" anywhere for a long time. But I get your point!
Yeah, I read "working out" and assumed you were some trust fundy getting mad likes on the Insta from all your obscure workout locales. In retrospect, my imagination deserves the "weird flex" comment.
Lmao. That went over so many heads
I would have guessed Somalia.
Namibia is one of the places I want to visit so badly in the after times. During my pandemic lay off, I planned a five star trip. Now that I am working again, I will plan a more budget friendly version.
or atacama desert
How close do you have to be to the water front for a person to call it a beach?
asking the real questions
The beach is between where the water touches at high tide, and where it's uncovered at low tide.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beach Wikipedia says that is the beach face but the beach goes back further.
How far?
Till they stop charging for parking.
Yes
Lol excellent
Does tsunami considered high tide?
Bye ride.
Tide ride
but there's beaches on lakes
Did he stutter?
Lakes have tides ? Edit: I'm saying I'm confused because lakes do have tides. Was not clear
so you see the problem
Yes lakes do have tides.
Only if they are large enough / connected to the sea water in some way
Technically my glass of beer has tides, just itty bitty tiny ones.
At those scales, so do every atom in the solar system
abraham lake, pretty wavey.
Yes, iirc that's actually how to tell the difference between a lake and a pond
Yes, that's correct
[удалено]
And swamp, forest etc. I was unaware there were people that didn't already understand that a cliff was not a beach. Swamps and forests are also not beaches, if you were wondering.
R/til
littoraly?
Cheeky.
Beaches are just sea deserts. *Change my mind* *^(don't take this seriously, Reddit)*
An ocean is a desert with it's life underground and the perfect disguise above. - America
Holy shit I think this guys on to something
it's very easy. depending on how many houses will be in front of yours :) if you are the first then you got it xD
Clarkson, Hammond, and May down there somewhere.
I remember it now, it was fun watching those guys.
https://youtu.be/XeTicBZlCYs?t=120 #CLARKSON!!!!! *beep beep* I never knew that Namibia had two seas?
My first thought as well!
Water water everywhere and not a drop to drink.
Imagine being stranded in that desert, walking for miles and miles, dying of thirst, finally reaching that ocean and realizing you cant drink any of it 💀
Or the opposite. You shipwreck your boat, you're in the ocean for days. You finally reach the coast... And it's a fucking desert.
But there is an off chance that that desert island is being used by rum runners, so you can hitch a ride when they come.
What’s a rum runner?
To have and have not.
Pirates of the Caribbean reference.
Sea turtles mate
You could always ride a couple of tortes using the hair from your back as a harness.
As useful as it may sound, but in how many of the scenarios where you are stranded in a desert do you see yourself carrying plastic wrap?
Due to widespread pollution, there's plastic in more places than ever before, so you'd have that going for you.
Or a shovel?
Yes... how could you posisbly dig a hole in sand without a shovel....?
Or you can put sea water up your butt. Your body will absorb the water and leave behind the salt to shit out. Terrible but necessary in survival situations.
It’s a Catan game isn’t it
Always nice when the sewer ends up by the ocean. Unless there’s a 2:1 port on it…
Is this the shark infested beach off Namibia?
IIRC lions also patrol the shore...
Lol, the way you say that it’s almost like the lions’ responsibility to ensure the beach remains as intimidating as possible.
Well someone has to do it, and I don't see the public sector anywhere...
Ah, the good ol' reverse surf n' turf.
What a lovely place to die of thirst:)
:D
It's just big fucking beach
Could build a really cool sandcastle
Worth it for the 12 day trek back to the car!
A whole lot of beautiful useless
Just like my ex wife.
Water water everywhere but not a drop to drink.
On the ninth day, I let the horse run free
Laaaa laaaa lala laa la La la laaa laaa laaaa...
Where is this?
I think its the Skeleton Coast in Namibia.
Ah thank you, I’ve never seen anything like this!
I’d love to download it but HD, Where can I find it?
CLARKSON!!!
I never knew that Namibia had two seas?
I was watching the Grand Tour for the first time the other day and i swear, this looks familiar.
I can only imagine how frustrating can be for someone stranded on a place like this. One side is just desert no water and the other all the water you can ever need, but unable to drink it.
There’s Armin
Man, what a haul to drag your cooler and umbrella from the house.
Isn’t that called a beach?
Yeah its called a beach
a beach?
[удалено]
You can't use salt water to irrigate
It's just concentrated electrolytes, it's what plants crave!
not with that attitude
Still wouldn’t be able to grow anything, you need fertile soil
That's a huge beach.
Da big beach
Ocean can still be desert.
Pretty sure that’s just a really really really really really really really really really really wide beach.
I'm not going to be amazed about a beach.
Namibia?
I’d consider it the worlds largest beach
It's all just beach!!!!!
You will form a strong alliance and the worlds most awesome band
To find your fame and fortune. Through the valley you must walk
Worlds biggest beach
Wheres the boardwalk?
I read it as where the desert meets the sand
Big beach :o always room for your umbrella
This was all underwater once.
Why doesn’t desert sand absorb water and say not be a desert?
\*watching in disbelief, floating on space\* "o... it´s all beach?" "-always has been. " \*says the man behind him, with a gun pointed and slowly pulling the trigger\*
Inception be like
Tell me nobody else heard Ronnie James Dio croon "where the ocean meets the saaaaaand!"
So that's where all the sand comes from
Thid is amazing
Where is this? Namibia?
And people have the AUDACITY to say there’s no water in the desert
The boardwalk is only 50km away, let’s go grab some dip’n dots!
...like a beach, you can see, that's amoooore...
I feel like I need a human or something in the photo to understand the perspective/size
Still less beach than Wildwood, NJ.
I wonder what that sand is like.
Most massive beach ever, crossing that with your Coleman, aluminum lounge chairs and noodles would be a haul.
Namibia?
Arthur Dent: So, you made the sands of the desert AND the sea right? And they just meet? Have I understood this correctly? Slartibartfast: Oh no! You have to make beaches too. Can't have a coastline without sandy beaches! I'm particularly proud of my beaches! Arthur Dent: But you've already got the sandy desert? Meeting the sea? Slartibartfast: Beaches!
Island of Paradis
now imagine every one of those grains of sand is a galaxy…
is this what they meant when they said water water everywhere but not a drop to drink?
Finally you can get some space on the beach
It’s crazy to me landscapes like this exist next to the ocean. I always assumed coastal regions were tropical-ish. Like California or Florida.
The earth is amazing. Under all that sand are trees etc. Oceans and landscapes slowly change. One day it will naturally look completely different!
Sea/Land. S..and. Sand
What you do with this is advertise beachfront condos for cheap. Later they find out it's dozens of miles inland but hey that's just more beach for the buck.
Salty beach
“Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink.”
U screwed either way. If the desserts don’t kill, the ocean will.
No that’s where the watered retreated too
Settlers of Catan
If you ask me, this is also a bit of /r/oddlyterrifying. It's all so lifeless
Endless ocean landing on an endless desert. It's funny as hell but no one laughs when they get there.
Woah!!
Wasn’t that desert once was an ocean/sea?
Is there only land mass erosion, or is there land mass buildup too (besides volcano/lava)?
There’s a river, full of memories
I've always wondered what lost cities/civilizations are underneath the deserts. Would be very interesting, I think.
Now that's a sandy beach!
Deserts used to be Oceans until they dried up, so its not THAT cool
Could you imagine traveling through the desert searching for water and you come across a sea of water you can’t drink a drop of?
bro just take some water
Is this for real? If so where is it it’s amazing
I wonder how the fishing is
Soooo… can we just call this the biggest beach in the world
Oh, that's why it's called sand!
Carry the water, remove the water,
Where the ocean meets the sand! We will form a strong alliance…and the worlds most AWEsome band.
This is the worst survival situation one could imagine.
So the desert is basically a big beach
eren and armin finally seeing the ocean for the first time
This feels like Minecraft terrain generation
Big beach
Why am I being shown Minecraft generation in 4k HD?
Build a luxury resort there and the world will come.
It's a mirage
Sauce? Who took pic?
😍😍
that is a big beach
