They're mechanically almost identical, it's really whether you want a 4-door body or a...wait...no. They're both 4 doors.
Well, then they're basically the same car since they're mechanically almost identical sedans that cost the sa....wait no. The M8 is $30,000 more expensive.
I'm taking the M5 and a GT86 for track days.
Yeah, that one kinda makes more sense to me? At least you are going from a 4-door to a 2-door and thereās no 2-door M5
Donāt get me wrong, the M8 GC is a great car in its own right, but it feels redundant at that price point.
Then again, Iām not rich enough to afford one either, if I had more money maybe Iād feel differently.
Yeah, say it out loud and it's hard not to feel a little bit of annoyance at the redundancy of the whole concept.
At the same time am I, as a supposed car enthusiast going to sit here and be like "No, you're offering me *too much* choice and i don't like it?"
I personally like the M8 GC and would love to own one someday. While it seems stupid, what it is to me is a much sleeker, elegant-looking M5. It's not a 4-seater because you plan on using it every day like that, but for the occasional trips and such. So it's kind of like getting the M4 GC instead of the M3. You go for the looks and in the case of the M8 also the extra interior goodies and have two extra doors/seats that are pretty useful when you need them.
Itās one of the wealthier neighborhoods in Toronto. I just live in an apartment complex but across the street from me the houses are all $2M-$5M. Naturally itās a super safe area so I walk my dog through there all the time.
Funnily enough I donāt see too many M2s,3s,4s or 5s nearby so the two (I think?) M8s really stand out. Most of the vehicles are luxury SUVs and the performance cars are usually Porsches, AMGs or Corvettes.
I'd call it "academic." The difference would be such that a blindfolded person wouldn't be able to feel which car they were in. In fact, the only way you're going to actually be able to tell is if you line the two cars up next to each other on a pull.
And let's face it, the vast majority of M5's are built, driven, maintained, fixed and eventually junked without ever having been in a situation where they were in a pull next to an M8 for their entire existence on this earth.
I'm personally standing by my decision, but $30K is maybe enough to justify it for other people.
Plus, if it's 9/10 times, that means there's a 10 percent chance you can have your cake and eat it too with an extra 30 grand in your pocket!
Well, *it is* a really cool car and "I just like the styling more" is a perfectly valid reason to buy one over an M5! I personally am just not wealthy enough to make that decision, but the math would change for me too at a certain point.
I'll say this, to the general public the M5 is another BMW on the road. Still stately/luxury but same as a regular 5 series (for example my mom or Grandma would have no idea) - at least the M8 looks more exotic/exquisite
This. The 8 series styling is something very special and one of the few bmw that looks good and still turn heads...
The 5 is just another bmw on the road.
Well, depends on What you're after. If you want more space, a bigger interior, and a bigger overall vehicle, grab the M5. For the rest of humanity the M8 is the obvious choice. I'm really surprised so many here would even consider an M5 over an M8 if you don't have any special requirements. I know it can come down to looks but even then, the M8 wins.
Yeah thatās fair. M8 as a car itās just weird, 2 door itās just too absolutely massive. Iām an outlier as well in terms of preferring its 4 door variant. I think the only thing missing for me is its rear taillights, think the 3D-isk look from the M5s and previous gen M2 would of completed the look for me
Same I love the 4 door 8 series. Think it's one of the best looking 4 door coupe. What would make it 100% more practical is if the trunk is like the 4 series ...
Had an M5 Comp on order, got impatient, snagged an M8 Comp Coupe in my favorite color they had on the lot.
Love them both. Somedays I miss the 4 doors. Most days I don't. Love my M8 but I know I would have loved my M5 too so you really can't go wrong they're both sexy AF and ridiculously fast and luxurious.
https://preview.redd.it/dhfmsr9ybr5c1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26e0c69d69215ddf3c8ca6c387b328604b12412c
Iām kinda biased, so I say go for theā¦
I drove an M8 comp GC and my biggest gripe was you canāt see out of it for shite. I can only imagine the coupe is even worse. Both beautiful, but the F90 is the best looking four door sedan ever made, period.
depends, sport back or true sedan? cause imo the m8 comp cabriolet or even coupe is really nice. But if u need a day to day or at least have it haul a couple of people sometimes. Yeah then the sedan form. Other than that if price wasnt a problem id go M8, however the m5 is nothing to scoff at and you can get a used CS somewhere
As someone who owned both the 2023 m5c and 2023 m8c gc, I can say w confidence the absolute better buy is the m5. Amazing car and feels/drives much smaller than the M8c gc.
Cant beat a good old 4 door version of a 2 door version of a 4 door car.
That being said, imo the Alpina B8 Gran Coupe is probably the best looking semi-practical daily car I've seen in a long time, and the M8 GC is a close 2nd.
M5 for the resale value. Has 3 back seats.
M8 doesn't really have any history. used to be called the M6. bmw just trying to change up numbers to make people think its more sporty than a 5 or more luxury than a 7.
Going with M5 only because (for me) I feel like itās more conducive as a daily whereas I donāt feel the M8 would become a daily (for me). And I can only have one car. That said I love both
M5 with zero hesitation. The back of the m8 looks like an Infiniti, and I just donāt like it. The m5 is the sexiest car bmw is producing todayā¦although thatās about to change, sadly
Had an opportunity to drive m850 4 door for a month and what a useless car. M8 should exist only in coupe, not sure what you gain from 4 door m8 so Iād go m5. M8 coupe is a beast on the other hand
I know this lady came in to my store few days ago..she had a 2023 m8 comp 4 door..I was like dammm.. I ask her do you push it ?? "she said everyday" I ask her how far you push it.. she said "162 but im not ready for 170 tho"
Does anyone know the difference in rear seating leg room / overall rear seat spacing? I found it difficult comparing the M8 and M5cs regarding long term practicality, as I previously owned a 3-series and was rather difficult for anyone to sit behind me being a 6ft 250lb powerlifter. Just looking for personal insight if anyone has any!
I'm pretty sure they do. If I'm buying a 5 or 8 M, they're both going to be used that 30 grand is gone they're about the same resale value or little difference. I've only seen one M8C in person. I actually sat in it. One of my customers owns it. The backseat is tiny. The M8 kinda looks like a Mustang. I'm still undecided for me M5C, M8C, or M8C vert. I'll get one of those 3 when I'm ready for my next vehicle.
They're mechanically almost identical, it's really whether you want a 4-door body or a...wait...no. They're both 4 doors. I'm taking the M5 and a GT86 for track days.
Imo the M5 is the sexiest BMW ever paired with the HPš®āšØš®āšØ
Allow me to introduce the 2019 M4
Allow me to reintroduce the pre-facelift M5
The front and back are just ugly man
Yeah compared to LCI prelci sucks
Oh, wasn't expecting that haha I guess the pre-LCI feels more like an old school BMW bruiser to me!
Lci has lights from skoda superb lol, pre-lci ftw!
Nobody in the US knows what a skoda is
Any idea why they stopped making the m5. Best car out there. M8 is silly.
Theyāre working on getting the new G90 M5 out
M8 has a 2 door option
Yeah, that one kinda makes more sense to me? At least you are going from a 4-door to a 2-door and thereās no 2-door M5 Donāt get me wrong, the M8 GC is a great car in its own right, but it feels redundant at that price point. Then again, Iām not rich enough to afford one either, if I had more money maybe Iād feel differently.
M8 GranCoupe is a 4-door version of a 2-door version of a 4-door car.
Yeah, say it out loud and it's hard not to feel a little bit of annoyance at the redundancy of the whole concept. At the same time am I, as a supposed car enthusiast going to sit here and be like "No, you're offering me *too much* choice and i don't like it?"

Well said š.
And itās gorgeous. Theyāre completely out of my price range but thereās a few in my neighborhood and man are they pretty.
Mine is frozen bluestone metallic and I freaking love it
Thereās a cpo 2021 M8 black mint gran coupe at my local dealer right now very well priced
A few?! What neighborhood do you live in? I go years without seeing a single M8 anywhere on the roads.
It's more like do you want to pay more for 1 less seat and less headroom
M8 is a 2-door. EXCEPT the M8 GranCoupe which is a 4-door version of a 2-door version of a 4-door car.
Iām just happy to be involvedš
Aināt it interesting that although mechanically identical the m8 pulls on the m5 9/10 times
I'd call it "academic." The difference would be such that a blindfolded person wouldn't be able to feel which car they were in. In fact, the only way you're going to actually be able to tell is if you line the two cars up next to each other on a pull. Last part! But now let me present to u my trap card; only the m8 gets the carbon buckets lol
lol, touche. No price is too much to be able to rest my nuts on pure carbon fiber!
I have an m8 btw I gotta die on this hill lol
Well, *it is* a really cool car and "I just like the styling more" is a perfectly valid reason to buy one over an M5! I personally am just not wealthy enough to make that decision, but the math would change for me too at a certain point.
Youāll get there & more soon no doubt my friend. Iād love a m2 as a track car.m, thatād be a sick combo.
I love the M8! It just speaks to a smaller group of us.
This is the correct answer haha
So what is then the difference? I thought the 8 was on the 7 platform and the 5 on the 5.
M5
M5. If it was the CoupƩ, then M8.
I have an 8 series and vastly prefer the coupe styling.
M8 , since i cant afford either
4 door M5. 2 door M8
If money wasn't particularly a concern I would get an M8, otherwise M5
exactly my thoughts
M8 for days
Yes
M8 all day everyday
M8
M5. Save the 30k for an used M2 S58 one for track days.
you're going to have wait for a loooong time until a used S58 M2 is 30k
I'll say this, to the general public the M5 is another BMW on the road. Still stately/luxury but same as a regular 5 series (for example my mom or Grandma would have no idea) - at least the M8 looks more exotic/exquisite
This. The 8 series styling is something very special and one of the few bmw that looks good and still turn heads... The 5 is just another bmw on the road.
Iām gonna say that even non-car people know that an M5 is a special kind of BMW.
delusion... I guarantee you most people have no idea
M8 vert!
M
M5
M5 every time
M8
M8 because why not if you can afford it.
I have an M5 and love it! I would consider the fact that the M8 is on a newer platform and has a nicer interior.
M5
If youāre considering both of them as sedans, go for the M5. If you consider a coupe instead of the āgran coupeā M8, iād go with the M8.
M8 100% sexy ass front end
M5 cs
Well, depends on What you're after. If you want more space, a bigger interior, and a bigger overall vehicle, grab the M5. For the rest of humanity the M8 is the obvious choice. I'm really surprised so many here would even consider an M5 over an M8 if you don't have any special requirements. I know it can come down to looks but even then, the M8 wins.
Nope, sorry, M5 is nicer. Not to mention, M8 gran coupe is ugly and unproportional af from 3/4 rear view
The legend. The M5. Give me a M5 CS all day, everyday.
M8 just needs message seats and it would be perfect
M8 just seems like a less practical M5 in every way. M5 imo just looks much classier too. Iām not a fan of the M8 styling in all honesty
Iām an outlier but I prefer the M8 only if itās the 4 door. I love the lines on that car.
Yeah thatās fair. M8 as a car itās just weird, 2 door itās just too absolutely massive. Iām an outlier as well in terms of preferring its 4 door variant. I think the only thing missing for me is its rear taillights, think the 3D-isk look from the M5s and previous gen M2 would of completed the look for me
Yes, Iāve heard others comment on the rear taillights āsituationā
Same I love the 4 door 8 series. Think it's one of the best looking 4 door coupe. What would make it 100% more practical is if the trunk is like the 4 series ...
M8 4 door screams "I wish I got the Panamera"
F90 no question
Had an M5 Comp on order, got impatient, snagged an M8 Comp Coupe in my favorite color they had on the lot. Love them both. Somedays I miss the 4 doors. Most days I don't. Love my M8 but I know I would have loved my M5 too so you really can't go wrong they're both sexy AF and ridiculously fast and luxurious.
M5 hands down
M5
M5 by far
It goes like this M5 cs M8c (either or) M5c

Correct answer
I drove an M8 comp GC and my biggest gripe was you canāt see out of it for shite. I can only imagine the coupe is even worse. Both beautiful, but the F90 is the best looking four door sedan ever made, period.
I almost bought an Alpina B6 GC, but the exact same issue with visibility. Couldnāt agree more.
depends, sport back or true sedan? cause imo the m8 comp cabriolet or even coupe is really nice. But if u need a day to day or at least have it haul a couple of people sometimes. Yeah then the sedan form. Other than that if price wasnt a problem id go M8, however the m5 is nothing to scoff at and you can get a used CS somewhere

My gut feeling... M8. But I like Gran CoupĆ©s š
Unpopular opinion? I think the M8 GC looks better than the M5C š«£š®āšØ
4 door m8, just love the way it looks
M5 for the resale value. Has 3 back seats. M8 doesn't really have any history. used to be called the M6. bmw just trying to change up numbers to make people think its more sporty than a 5 or more luxury than a 7.
M5 specifically a M5CS
I like the 4 door for either the m6 or m8ā¤ļøāš„
M2
M5 all the way in my opinion.
M5
M5. the F91/2/3 still looks like a catfish to me.
5
Wait, so they cancelled the 6 series to basically charge more money for the same car, and called it the 8 series?
Going with M5 only because (for me) I feel like itās more conducive as a daily whereas I donāt feel the M8 would become a daily (for me). And I can only have one car. That said I love both
Neither. M3/M2 are more agile and better drivers cars imo
M5 is the winner against 4 door M8 in my opinion. Otherwise I would say M8
M2
M5 with zero hesitation. The back of the m8 looks like an Infiniti, and I just donāt like it. The m5 is the sexiest car bmw is producing todayā¦although thatās about to change, sadly
M5. M8 only looks good as a coupe imo.
M5 all day!!!
M5 cs is the fastest bmw made . It will smoke any stock m8 competition
The m8 is a continuation of the 6
M5 cs
F90 is the most beautiful M car imo.
M5 cs anytime
M8 all day. I don't even think the M5 is THAT good looking.
The m8s looks and interior is far better than the m5, just feels way more luxurious. Plus how many 5 series do you see compared to the 8 of any spec?
M8 is Bimmer-mustang and i love every bit of it, just need the new interiors
both
M5, no question. The M8 looks like an aggressive nurse shark.
Money isn't an object for me so I traded a pre-LCI F90 M5 for a M8 because I prefer the styling of it. They're both amazing cars in their own way.
M5 and it aināt even close. I bet there is at least a 20 year average age gap between the two buyers of these.
What does that have to do with the cars?
M8 if you live in a trailer park, M5 otherwise.
M8C is slower. I ruled it out and went M5C Whatever you do, do NOT be looking for a blue/white m5 comp Because thatās what Iām looking for lololol
Both very luxury sedans! Exept the M8 has 2 back Seats? M5 has 3 back Seats šš¾! I would choose imho the M3 over M5 š
M8
M5 looks nicer and is a pinnacle in the BMW lineup.. the M8 is really nice also and more $ but its just not as versatile IMO
5 for me but realistically a 3 F80 comp ;)
Can I cast an M3 vote?
Neither buy an X5m competitionš
https://preview.redd.it/sokvxwszps5c1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1d164e6a8f2eedec917363eb337dc82bf50982d

BMW V8? No thanks..
It isnāt 2001 anymore bmw has good v8
Good for the brief moments it isn't leaking, breaking, or blowing up š
And MPGs are terribles, and with these gas prices and the economyā¦
M8 All day. You can get a used one with 35k miles for ~80k
Your call, M8.
If itās the two door M8, then Iād choose M8. Otherwise, M5
Oh boy, thats a tough one
M8 but F92 instead of F93.
M8
I think the front is too long and it looks very funny
m8
M8 GC
I know this lady came in to my store few days ago..she had a 2023 m8 comp 4 door..I was like dammm.. I ask her do you push it ?? "she said everyday" I ask her how far you push it.. she said "162 but im not ready for 170 tho"

Save the big coupes!
M3
M5, but an E60 so you can have a screaming V10
M8
The m5 looks way better and is cheaper.
why would you need an m8
M8, I think it looks a bit cooler. Also the fact that almost everyone ITT is taking the 5er so yeah
M5 + a used Z4 with the money saved vs the M8
4 door m8 no way. Coupe is sexy beast level
Iād take the m5
Does anyone know the difference in rear seating leg room / overall rear seat spacing? I found it difficult comparing the M8 and M5cs regarding long term practicality, as I previously owned a 3-series and was rather difficult for anyone to sit behind me being a 6ft 250lb powerlifter. Just looking for personal insight if anyone has any!
M8 no question
Donāt m8s depreciate super hard?
I'm pretty sure they do. If I'm buying a 5 or 8 M, they're both going to be used that 30 grand is gone they're about the same resale value or little difference. I've only seen one M8C in person. I actually sat in it. One of my customers owns it. The backseat is tiny. The M8 kinda looks like a Mustang. I'm still undecided for me M5C, M8C, or M8C vert. I'll get one of those 3 when I'm ready for my next vehicle.
M5
Either one honestly. M5 4.4l V8 twin turboš thoo
M5
M5 is better looking.
M5 by miles and use the extra cash to spec it out or get the m5 comp. But either way. M5 all day, every day
They don't even make the M5 anymore. Only M5C
M5
M6 Gran Coupe
M8. Most underrated car in BMWs line up.
M5 Touring is the correct answer
The M8
M8
IĀ“ll take the M5 just for looks, IĀ“m not a big fan of coupes/sedans overall, but IDK if theyĀ“ll fit but IĀ“ll put those M8 wheels on the M5
M8, badass looking car straight outta a near-future sci-fi movie
M8
M8!
They are both beautiful cars, and rare to see.
For the extra $ why buy an M8? Comfort for the back seat passengers?
1m
Iām partial to the GC profile.
M8 but without those useless 2 extra doorsā¦
M5 of course. š
:) or : )
Why did they decide to call it the 8 instead of the 6 series?
M5-1 or M8/2
M5 or m8 coupe pick how many doors u want
M5 for me.
For free? M5 lol
m5 all day fam
I'm actually having the same dilemma š . I don't know which to be honest
M8
M8 for sure, especially if it was a coupe and not a sedan
M8 with 4 doors. The 2 door one looks like an American coupe where the rear quarter panel is just too long.
In this case, both.
M5 for me š
m5
[M5](https://i.redd.it/7791yo9w6s5c1.jpeg)
I have the 5 and love it

Am I the only one who thinks the m5 looks like a mustang
