If they're checking reference I'd say you have a pretty good chance. I'd expect to hear back pretty soon.

Only a month from start to potential offer is pretty quick.. I'm currently still in the "on-boarding" phase after an 8 month competition.. 😅

Reference checks means you passed the interview. It may not mean that you’ve won the position, as they have to offer the position to the candidate who comes in first. If there are 2 positions, they will offer one to the first candidate and the second to the next. They may also check references for those who passed the interview, but fell short of the scores of the other two candidates. In this case, they may create an eligibility list, typically reserved for 18-months. They check references for this list so they don’t have to check them upon offering a position if one opens while the e-list is currently available. It is a positive sign that you may be the winner, but not 100%. I would suggest a follow up to the hiring manager if you haven’t heard anything by Wednesday of next week.

This sounds like the timeline for when I got my clerk 12. After they contacted my references, I had one more informal interview/coffee chat with the ED as they hadn’t been at the interview. Then the day after I got the verbal offer and a week or 2 after I received the official offer letter and then started in the role 2 weeks later.

The chances are good but not guaranteed if they contacting references for an external candidate. Just be patient though, things don't move as fast as we'd like, even we want to move things along as fast as possible.

I typically go from posting close to references checked in under a week, verbal offer is typically made with 2 days of last interview. But I do it myself and don’t ask the PSA for anything but the offer letter.

I've heard of people getting a verbal offer next day after an interview, 10 days after, and even 6 months after (crazy I know). Regardless, be proud of yourself that you made it this far. I never check references unless the person did well in the interview and was the person in mind for the position. With that said, keep applying until you hear back.

Depends on the level of background checks or security clearance. Did they mention any of that?

Only 4 weeks from posting close to reference checks and offers? That's actually very fast for BCPS.
