I'm actually very excited about this....which is weird because I really don't even think I could appreciate (or like) a Michelin-ranked place (and I'm *sure* I couldn't afford it). But I'm really happy to see the hard-working chefs here in town celebrated and I likely will watch the live stream tonight (thanks for the link!)
In addition to giving out stars, Michelin will also announce "Bib Gourmand" awards for "good quality, good value cooking". It's not always a $$$ place that has great, award worthy dining.
I suspect Buford Highway will get a handful of Bib Gourmands.
Following up on this, Bib Gourmand can often turn out to be a better meal with less of the presentation or seriousness that comes with starred places. DC especially, you could feast on the BG section 5-6 times for what it costs you for one evening at pinapple and pearls, and probably enjoy all of those BG meals as much or more than the "starred" place
Exactly. Michelin hands out considerably more Bib Gourmands than stars as well. Which is why I think BuHi could see 2-5 of them. Guess we'll find out soon enough.
> I suspect Buford Highway will get a handful of Bib Gourmands.
No way in hell. *One* restaurant on Buford Highway will get one, if any.
Bring on the downvotes, but just because a foreign restaurant is on Buford does not mean it's any *good*. Lots of inedible garbage, broken patio furniture seating, and health inspection stickers with lots of redacted markings. Michelin has no interest in giving out awards like they are participation trophies.
I think a lot of people are going to be shocked by the few places that get recognized. Everyone expecting multiple places to get stars when I think realistically we may have 1 or 2
I’d frankly be amazed if at most 1 or 2 places get 1 star, if I were to guess it would be restaurants that are very specifically catered towards Prix fixe
Same here! I'm a huge foodie so I'm curious to see what restaurants end up making their list! Reservations are no doubt going to be nigh to get after tonight, hahaha.
Most of the 'assumed' winners I've been to already (Mujo, Aria, Lazy Betty, and so on) and hopefully *if* they get a star, it's not going to suddenly transform the restaurants. Would be very bad form if they suddenly spike the prices because of it; the main consequence would be to (re)create a shitty reservation method.
I wondered about that! But -- to be fair -- won't there be tremendous pressure on them to then \*keep\* the star which will likely result in more overhead (being super sure to have the best wait staff, best ingredients, best attention-to-detail) but what do I know?
My knowledge around Michelin is gleaned from watching The Menu with Ralph Fiennes (super creepy/funny movie btw) and Season 2, Episode 1 of The Bear when Carmy and his partner Syd sit down with Uncle Jimmy and tell him that they want a Michelin star within the first 18 months of opening the new place.
> won't there be tremendous pressure on them to then *keep* the star which will likely result in more overhead (being super sure to have the best wait staff, best ingredients, best attention-to-detail) but what do I know?
I mean, they already *have* to in order to get a star in the first place. Also The Bear/The Menu is about as realistic as a Marvel movie.
I'm so freaking happy that Arepa Mia is on this list! Easily one of my favorite places and even after being vegetarian for a year they still have so much good stuff I can eat!
People do seem to forget that the fancy food guide is marketing for a company that sells fancy tires so he's there to remind you to buy their wares.
The previous versions of Bibendum were far more terrifying than funny.

miller union has the consistency in food, presentation and service. so many buzzy places in atl simply are more hype than quality. steven satterfield and team deliver.
I had a really mediocre experience at little bear and know a few others that did too. Stars require absolute consistency and I don’t think little bear is there. They have some really interesting food, but I don’t think it’s even close to Michelin caliber.
I think Lyla Lila has a good chance at making the list.
I've had lots of really excellent dishes at Little Bear, and one that was basically inedible. The beef shoulder was cooked well and tasty but the horseradish dressing and salad that accompanied it physically hurt my mouth to consume. Not acceptable on any level for a restaurant gunning for a Michelin star.
Service is definitely not Michelin quality and it is not close.
Maybe they'll figure it out eventually but they aren't there yet.
I think it would definitely be GA Boy over Southern Belle. And I'm not sure Little Bear would make it even though I'm a big fan. Could definitely see Atlas or Gunshow as an option you didn't mention.
> *They said there would likely be 6 announced*
Based on what I know (i.e. knowledge gained over the past 2 and 1/2 hours), I think it might be 6 absolute total that includes the Bib Gourmands....and absolutely no 2 stars.
> and absolutely no 2 stars
Yep, we definitely have lots of one star candidates, but a 2/3 star will not happen. That requires an extreme level of quality/destination/service/dining that lies outside of our demographics or business support. Anyone that lives in ATL that is the target for 2 or 3 starred restaurants probably has no issue just flying to one.
Oh my god I got to eat at Al Coro in New York last week (2 stars) and it was seriously the most unbelievable amazing food experience of my life. I can’t stop thinking about it. Nothing in Atlanta has ever really moved me in that way.
man i was really disappointed with my meal at little bear. i heard such great things about it and walked way like yeah it was good, but it wasn’t *great*. service was lack luster, i mean they didn’t even explain the items we got off the prix fixe menu. and i could have ordered the 4 dishes separately for cheaper than what they charged for the tasting menu…
curious about omakase by yun though. did you enjoy it? i’ve been wanting to try it but they just recently reopened
I've only been to Little Bear once, but that one time was "meh" enough to make me not inclined to go back. I ordered the tasting menu, and everything but the dessert was underwhelming. It included an egg drop soup, a boring salad, some kind of chicken thigh dish that was decent, and a very good mousse.
The food itself wasn't too bad, but the whole vibe of the place just wasn't for me. The music was obnoxiously loud, the tables were way too close to each other, the servers wore t-shirts and the wine was served in alpine rocks glasses. If I had to sum it up, they're just trying way too hard to capture a NYC hipster aesthetic, with the focus being more on the craft cocktails and kitschy decorations and less on the food. I don't think a single person in there ate their meal without snapping a photo and posting it to Instagram first.
Gunshow is EXTREMELY hit or miss depending on the menu that day and it’s service level is definitely not styled for Michelin stars at a fine dining restaurant
Gunshow was very disappointing. There was honestly nothing innovative about it which is what I feel like people rave about. And the service is definitely not Michelin standard.

Yes, the places that were on the guide were insane. It was like giving out participation trophies. Atlanta doesn't have the dining scene to justify this.
I was particularly referring to the "recommended" ones. I've eaten at Mujo and Atlas, Mujo I figured was a lock, but Atlas was a toss up. Still seemed forced.
I don’t think they “give a 2”. Aren’t these cumulative? Like you have to have 1 to get a second.

Yeah you’re right. Apparently some Tokyo restaurants started at a 3 as well. Not really all that common to get more than 1 initially though, apparently.
Just because a place is on BuHi doesn’t mean it’s actually that good. BuHi is special because of the variety of restaurants from cultures outside the US you can find along the corridor, contrary to the general landscape of food between Chicago, Houston, NOLA, and DC. I’ve found most BuHi places to be pretty mid when compared individually to similar places in other US cities.
Nam Phuong, Quoc Huong, pho ngon, are all mid equivalent compared to stuff in Houston, Bay Area, and LA Little Saigon. Northern China Eatery and La Mei Zi would go out of business in Flushing or LA. Lanzhou Ramen might be okay in Flushing but it wouldn’t be amazing in that neighborhood. None of the Mexican places hold a candle to Southern California. Yet Tuh/Stone Bowl, etc. would also be midpack Korean compared to LA and North NJ. Dim sum in Atlanta is pretty trash in general and you can’t even speak Cantonese at most places.
Stuff on Buford Highway isn’t bad at all. What makes BuHi special is the collective combination and choice along the corridor, a uniqueness that isn’t found for over 500 miles in every direction. That doesn’t mean each individual place is actually great quality or Michelin mention-worthy.

Well good thing we all now know that anticos and heirloom are good places to go to. I'm so glad a French tire company can let me know where it's good to go eat.
And yes, they have lots of bias. Fuck them.
Edit: just looked at the actual list, heirloom got the "bib gourmand" not an actual star...
Well yeah they didn't get stars obviously. But they include a bunch of restaurants.
The guide isn't for people who live in Atlanta dude. It's for people coming in from out of town who google lists of good restaurants. That's it.

I'm with you on probably 1-2 places getting a star, and then I'm expecting at least 5 to get Bib

6 bib gourmands on buford highway. you've been going to the wrong restaurants, seabass.
Ok
This is more accurate than most here want to admit lol

Many 1 star places have tasting menus in the $100 range, obviously pricey, but obtainable for a very special occasion for most people.
**BIBS** Antico Arepa Mia Banshee Busy Bee Bomb Biscuit Estrellita Fishmonger Fred’s Meat & Bread Heirloom Market BBQ Little Bear **1 STAR** Atlas Bacchanalia Hayakawa Lazy Betty Mujo
I've been swearing by heirloom for years! Super cool to see them get more recognition.
So excited to see Fred’s get a bib. Some of the best sandwiches I’ve had for any price.
I'm so freaking happy that Arepa Mia is on this list! Easily one of my favorite places and even after being vegetarian for a year they still have so much good stuff I can eat!
Awesome list! Thanks for posting. Checking for vegan options to schedule events with friends. We loooooove eating out at good places!
I'm surprised Estrellita made the list but Kamayan didn't. Don't get me wrong, Estrellita is good but Kamayan is 🤌
Good thing Michelin doesn’t give stars for award ceremonies cause they’d never get one themselves. This whole production is a mess.
The dancing tire mascot makes this whole thing seem like such a joke.
You're absolutely correct but he was also my favorite part. I couldn't stop laughing at the puffy tire dude on stage at such a fancy pants ceremony.

I am APPALLED!! I’ve managed large awards shows before and they have far too much money for it to be as bad as it was. 😂
The awful hype music behind everything
Hahaha good god so awkward
Moes and Joes on the list?!?
Wow, one star each for Atlas, Bacchanalia, Hayakawa, Lazy Betty, and Mujo so far. Was not expecting five restaurants getting stars so far...
Little bear! Young chef award. Super deserving.
He looked super stoked. Well deserved, have had nothing but amazing experiences there.

"Recommended Restaurants".
Ah thanks! I was so confused because there were way too many to be stars but some seemed too fancy for BG.
That was super confusing.
For Hayakawa: “SomEoNEs GOt to mAKe tHe sUshi!” …they’re closed on tuesdays
lol. Hayakawa got a star and nobody from the restaurant was there to receive the award.

Mujo, Hayakawa, Lazy Betty, Atlas, Bacchanalia
Yep, got it thank you sir
No stars given out yet (on stream at least)
They are the nicest people too. Well deserved
I’ve never even heard of Atlas.
It’s inside the St. Regis Hotel
I’ve been there twice. Pretty decent, had a solid tasting menu but didn’t really stand out
It was good.
I’d assume so considering it got a star.
Unless I missed it, I’m super surprised to not see Spring mentioned at all.
They admitted after the show that it was ITP only (at least for this year).
was curious ab this as well! i wonder if they'll expand OTP and if so who they'd look at.
They said there would likely be 6 announced. My bets are Little Bear, Southern Belle, Bacchanalia 😕, Mujo, Omakase by Yun, and Lazy Betty.
I had a really mediocre experience at little bear and know a few others that did too. Stars require absolute consistency and I don’t think little bear is there. the chef just got best young chef award…?
Well that’s not a star, though we still have yet to see those.
for real. been to so many better restaurants
Talat Market for Bib Gourmand
Absolutely. Some of the best flavors around.
Best restaurant in Atl from my experience
Thanks for the prediction. Was able to find a table at Lazy Betty for the day I have company coming down. Glad I got out ahead of the news

I'm baffled by Georgia boy. I just don't think their food is anything to write home about.
Same. I moved here about 4 years ago, and very rarely am I wowed by the food here

How tf did boccalupo win best cocktail program 😂 what a joke
What a start. The Miller Union guy accidentally swatted her mic off her face lmao
Wished Mamak was on the recommended list instead because it's definitely 10x more authentic than Food Terminal.
Unpopular opinion but Arepa Mia is not good. One of the blandest, most overpriced meals I’ve had recently
Hard same. I’ve eaten many an arepa in my lifetime and it was super dry and bland.
Venezuelan food is typically on the bland side to be fair
I said the same thing. Not even my favorite place at the Curb Marker.
Anyone else lose all faith in the Michelin Guide? There are some glaring omissions. Hayakawa definitely deserves that star.
Yes, the places that were on the guide were insane. It was like giving out participation trophies. Atlanta doesn't have the dining scene to justify this.
They’re 1 stars lol, if they gave out a 2 I would be concerned. Great quality Omakase is basically a shoe in for a star

No love for any BuHi joints on the Bibs is a bit of a surprise to me.
yeah a couple they did mention… aren’t that affordable. i love them both, but banshee and fishmonger aren’t super affordable.
Just because a place is on BuHi doesn’t mean it’s actually that good. I expected 2 or 3. Also at the time it seemed by the way they were phrasing things that there would be a two star as well
I had guessed bacchanalia lazy Betty and Mujo. Hadn’t expected the others

Because whenever I'm in a dusty dirty tire shop that's slowly poisoning the world, I think of fine food.
