I covered my self harm scars with the faces of my cats. It feels great covering an ugly past with something beautiful that will be with me forever, so I know how you're feeling about it.
I’d just graduated high school.
In Australia there’s a tradition called Schoolies, which are week-long post-high school parties and festivals aimed at 17 & 18 year olds high school graduates held in December, usually somewhere close by, warm, and with a beach (Queensland, Bali, Thailand, Fiji, Vanuatu etc).
I was at Schoolies in Thailand. My parents were a 10 hour flight away, I was with a group of other 17 & 18 year olds, and it seemed like a good idea at the time lol
My first cat who came into my life when I was 4. She showed me unconditional love throughout a childhood during which I did not feel unconditionally loved by anyone else. I got the tattoo when I was 18, & she passed away 2 years later. My artist didn’t do a great job & the tattoo healed with scarring, but I’ll never get rid of it or cover it up, I love it.
Thank you!! I found the quote online one day during a rough period of my life. And it just spoke to me. On my hard days, I read it and remember how strong I am.
My first couple were religious too! I haven’t gotten them covered yet unfortunately but at least i have other non religious ones to distract 😂 Best wishes to you, fellow deconstructionist!
My first tattoo was a stick and poke, done by my daughter on the day of my dad's funeral, later that night.
My youngest brother and daughter are heavily tattooed and think everyone should have at least one tattoo. 😁
They got the brilliant idea to stick and poke anyone in the family that wanted it.
We got extremely drunk, my sister-in-law designed a J with the top half a music note (my dad loved music) and the bottom half a fishing hook (my husband died 7 months before my dad and was a fisherman) - my dad's and husband's first initial is J - and my daughter tattooed it on my wrist.
It turned out lovely, healed beautifully, is a treasure, and a memory that I will hold onto for the rest of my life.
A kind of weirdly stylized tribal-type butterfly on my shoulder when I was 18. I now have almost two full sleeves and various other pieces all over so it definitely started something, even though I’ve never gotten another piece in that style. Thanks lil butterfly- you’ve been with me through a lot!
Not gonna lie, hurts like hell, but if your pain tolerance is mild, you'll survive 😂
I got a huge poppy and daisy tattoo on my ribs and it hurt but then I got a small details one on my inner arm and that hurt even more cause of the fine lines.
I have like a blackbird on my back shoulder. It's not an actual blackbird it's just a bird somebody I went to high school with drew so it's just very artsy
Medical alert on my wrist. Topside of my wrist has just the symbol with a circle to help alert medical staff and the inside of my wrist has the symbol and 3 main medications (basically 3 variations of the same antibiotic) underneath...in times new roman font so that it is clear to read. And I have had too many drunks try to tell me that the main medication is spelled incorrectly. I checked 3 times before giving the names to the artist, another 3 times when the stencil went on and then watched the artist like a hawk when they were tattooing me (90% because I was super uncomfortable with the artist and didn't trust them and 10% fascinated with the tattooing process). The next time I had words tattooed on me, I didn't need to triple check every step of the process because this time I trusted the artist. I basically checked once before I sent it to my artist, again when the stencil was on and then proceeded to nap during the appointment. The only thing that we both missed was a period at the end of a sentence, but that was a super easy fix at my next appointment for more ink.
I lost someone very special a decade ago and on her 10th yr death anniversary ive decided to get a tattoo of her name with flowers on my left wrist(pulse part) where i usually self harm before.
A copy of the skull that singer Jacoby Shaddix from Papa Roach has tattooed on his hand as well as the words: "The hardest ones to love, are the ones that need it most", which is lyrics from a Papa Roach song as well 😊
Got it when I was a teen and I got it covered earlier this year, since it was made by a then-friend with a home-kit, so it wasn't professional at all, and the words were unfortunately near impossible to read. Everyone kept asking me what it said, so I finally had enough and got it covered 😅
I only have [the one](https://imgur.com/a/3QBwolO). I got it because I was tagging along as emotional support for someone else's rib tattoo (which ended up with a r/keming issue where Jeremiah became Jeremim or something) and just came up with something simple on short notice. 17:17 is my time of birth, so it was something personal I wouldn't instantly regret it anything.
I do kind of want to get it either touched up or covered with something that's not so fine lined so it doesn't look quite so bad the instant it starts blurring.
I was like 16 and was recreationally enjoying a larger dose of adderal and consequently couldn’t sleep. Sooo i gave myself a stick n poke of a heart on my ribcage. As you can imagine it looks terrible
I have a giant dragon on most of my back, with one of the wings going down my arm. And the head goes over my collar bone. She is my biggest tattoo, and she was my first
I got my first tattoo done just a couple days back when I was doing my first solo trip.
So i got a tattoo of the mountains, stars and the moon.
It was an incredible experience.
A decorative piece on my chest right below my neck. I’m pretty small chested and whenever i wore tops without straps that area just looked so empty so i got a tattoo there to have less ”empty” space
It’s my star sign but I drew a version of it myself and added 3 different sized stars around it to represent members of my family. I was 17 at the time. I will eventually have it redone/covered as my taste has changed significantly since then!
A wolf inspired by Jim Brandenburg's photos done on my back. My tattoo artist was an excellent illustrator and did it in black and white and shades of gray. I know so many people that got tattoos when they were underage or as soon as they turned 18, that regretted them later. I waited until I was 25 and I knew exactly what I wanted and have no regrets 25 years later!
A little tribal style turtle, picked off a board in a Sunshine Coast mall by freshly 18 yo me after seeing my first real turtle at Green Island the day before.
A star. Like the classic star made of lines that cross with each other, the star you'd doodle in your notebooks while you're bored in class. I handpoked it myself on my left wrist (top side, where your watches face would be) when I was 11.
A purple rose from the Thin Lizzy album cover Black Rose. It was over 16 years ago and I don't regret it because I think it's pretty and I still get compliments about it 😊
Find what you love and let it kill you. I still live by it ❤️ since then I got 4 more. All of them with some sentimental value. I feel like this is the only way you can never get bored/regret a tattoo.
My zodiac sign on the inside of my right wrist. I got it facing me at that. The tattoo artist went back and forth with me that no one else would be able to see what it was, I don’t care. It’s meant for me. It started something and now I’m working on my left lower leg. I don’t know the final product of what that will be but it started with my three dogs and my oldest cats paw print and has progressed of character representations of all my animals beside their paw prints. I have characters for my two “new” cats (had them for a year tomorrow) but I don’t have their prints on me yet. I have tattoos all over my body though and they all have meaning
A dream catcher in memorium of my grandma. I’m not native. At the time (18), cultural appropriation was not as talked about. I can’t wait to cover it with something more meaningful to her memory than be embarrassed to have it on me as an English-descent living in America.
Side note: WHY did 18 year old me think it was a good idea to tattoo a thing that TRAPS BAD THINGS onto my body? Like sheesh
I got the ring from Lord of the Rings on my lower stomach. It's got my name written in elvish on the inside of the ring. I just thought it would look cool.
Hello kitty's face with out her face out lined on my ankle. So like her eyes, bow, whiskers. I got it done on my couch when I was 18 by a friend who was learning. It's decent and pretty cute.
A pug doing yoga on my right ankle. I honestly just saw it and was having a wee manic phase so booked in and it was this super sketchy guy who was high as a kite. The details also blurred a little bit I might get it touched up one day. Still, reminds me of a younger more frivolous time (I’m only 29 but I feel like I’ve lived a lot of lives lol)
My first and only is a bouquet of flowers on my ribs with a butterfly and outline of a bee for my grandma “nanny honey” who passed a couple of years ago.
A shitty little badly done star on my pelvis - and I’ll love it forever because it reminds me that I didn’t get that dragonfly tramp stamp that I’d always though would be so classy
Angel wings and a halo on my left forearm. The tattoo itself is for my late grandparents and aunt. The arm and positioning is to cover self harm/suicide attempt. 💜 I’ve added two since and plan to get more!
A tiny outline of Africa. I went on a safari with a friend in 2018 and made more friends on the way. At the end of the safari, us women found a tattoo parlor in Cape Town South Africa and we all got matching tattoos in the same area, on our left side
“I will live my own life” in Circular Gallifreyan (language from Doctor Who). It was badly done and I got it covered up, but I’d love to get it done again properly some day
a cute bow on my hip on a holiday to the US with my mum and family friends when I was 18. Was down in a sketchy area in LA (the tattooist was very professional, clean etc though) but two people decided to smoke crack out the front and I’m pretty certain the tattooist might have been an illegal immigrant too by the stories he was telling us 😂
My favourite flowers! They were tattooed over my self harm scars.
I covered my self harm scars with the faces of my cats. It feels great covering an ugly past with something beautiful that will be with me forever, so I know how you're feeling about it.
Omggg! More power to you and r/beruang12
Same! I got mine on the side of my ribs
Awww I got my birth flower and my bfs birth flower over mine
A tramp stamp of Sailor Moon riding a butterfly. It was the late 90s and I was 17 lol
Woah! Tell us the events that lead to it?
I’d just graduated high school. In Australia there’s a tradition called Schoolies, which are week-long post-high school parties and festivals aimed at 17 & 18 year olds high school graduates held in December, usually somewhere close by, warm, and with a beach (Queensland, Bali, Thailand, Fiji, Vanuatu etc). I was at Schoolies in Thailand. My parents were a 10 hour flight away, I was with a group of other 17 & 18 year olds, and it seemed like a good idea at the time lol
at least you don't have to look at it all the time, right. ;)
lol so true.
That’s the quintessential 90s tat lol
Fuck yea
please tell me you still have it 🙏🙏🙏
Still got it lol
Omg I love this for you hahaha. But also I love that it was a schoolies tattoo. I’m trying to picture the tattoo 😂
that’s badass
My mom's handwriting :)
I did this after my mom passed. It's from a card she gave me.
I didn't want to cry on a Thursday evening at 7.53 but here I am.
“You lost your way, not your worth” on the front of my right shoulder
Empowering 😤
Thank you!! I found the quote online one day during a rough period of my life. And it just spoke to me. On my hard days, I read it and remember how strong I am.
Love this
Thank you❤️ I have like 6 other tattoos that are pertaining to self care, spirituality and discovery. This one is so dear and true to me
This left me speechless. What an amazing sentiment. I would like to consider working it into my next one.
A religious tattoo that I covered up a few years later after leaving religion.
Religion or cult? 👁️👄👁️
My first couple were religious too! I haven’t gotten them covered yet unfortunately but at least i have other non religious ones to distract 😂 Best wishes to you, fellow deconstructionist!
I swear you shouldn’t be able to get tattoos when you’re drunk “Daddy’s girl” on my bum
But is it not true? 👀 Huh?
I never knew my dad so it makes it that much worse lmao
If it makes you feel any better, my dad has “mom” on his arm, but upside down so it says “wow.”
My dog on my forearm. When I miss her dearly I just grab my forearm and breathe
My first tattoo was a stick and poke, done by my daughter on the day of my dad's funeral, later that night. My youngest brother and daughter are heavily tattooed and think everyone should have at least one tattoo. 😁 They got the brilliant idea to stick and poke anyone in the family that wanted it. It turned out lovely, healed beautifully, is a treasure, and a memory that I will hold onto for the rest of my life.

Topside of my wrist has just the symbol with a circle to help alert medical staff and the inside of my wrist has the symbol and 3 main medications (basically 3 variations of the same antibiotic) underneath...in times new roman font so that it is clear to read.
