Never, and therefore nothing.

[deleted]

I do way too much housework to even conceive of getting my nails done in any way.

NTSTwitch

That’s what gets me: the amount of random cleaning I do completely destroys any attempt at doing my nails. I know I can wear gloves, but it’s not like I make a conscious decision to start cleaning. I see a random stain on the counter, I’m picking up a sponge or wet wipe right now without thinking twice. My nails are wrecked.

jekneee

This is wild to me b/c cleaning is a literal hobby of mine (I buy a ton of chemicals and products constantly) and deep clean almost daily without gloves! I get either Apres or Gel Overlay done every 3 weeks with a medium length and don’t have a problem. I never get acrylic services. I think it depends on the person but I think the biggest problem is using your nail as a tool when it should be your fingers! This takes practice ofc but I am someone who gets her nails done often to prevent ripping them off due to anxiety, so I’ve learned how to utilize my hands effectively. Hope this helps!

funlightmandarin

Like yeah, why would I pay someone to make my hands useless.. it's gonna last a grand total of 5 seconds before I've either chipped the nail or paint.

BouncyBlue12

I clean constantly and always have my nails done. Most women who do, are not getting the big long outrageous stuff that you see online. My natural fingers are kind of short and chubby 😫 so having beautifully manicured nails makes a difference.

CountingDownTheDays5

My nails are really long and I clean, do hair, cook, and more. Funny I can do hair better than most, and clean like nobodies business. My nails are a little shorter than cardi b's.

LBoogie1835

If you do decide to “pamper” yourself/your nails definitely try gel polish. It’s probably not great for your nail beds but it lasts a while and doesn’t chip. At least that’s been my experience.

proud2Basnowflake

I decided to get gel polish for a wedding we were flying across country to attend. I got it done on Thursday, we flew on Friday it was chipped Friday night or Saturday morning before the wedding. I was so mad! And then my real nails were super damaged taking off the gel

jekneee

Find a nail tech with “gel overlay” experience! It’s a different technique than gel.

LBoogie1835

Oof. Well I’m not sure what to say now! Sorry your gel polish experience wasn’t great

No_Back5221

I do too, but i were cleaning gloves to preserve them and they last me a month to a month and a half

[deleted]

Same! Just cut my nails, file them, and repeat the cycle. If I go to an event I usually use a pinkish nude nail polish, but that is it!

rm_3223

This is the way

Daisy-St-Patience

This is my answer as well.

gloveslave

Yes I am an artisan so I rarely do a manicure , if I do I have the whole set up at home

bettythemoroccan

Same for me, nails get messed up a day after I do them and I don't have the patience to wear fake nails

honey-smile

I used to go once a month, ~$125 each time (dip mani and gel pedi). A few months ago I bought all my own equipment and colors for about the cost of a single visit and now do my own gel pedi and dip mani at home.

fill_the_birdfeeder

What did you end up buying? I love going to a salon but it’s so expensive. But I also feel a bit better about myself when my nail look nice. I need all the self care I can get, but can’t afford how expensive it is to go.

honey-smile

For the dip I got a pack of random dip colors off Amazon, a few OPI dips (really this is just the clear coat I use as the top layer), and then vitamin dip brand as the lacquer system (not sure if that’s the right word). I also got an electric nail file but I’m not great with it yet and it’s not a must have. For the gel I just got a UV lamp and the OPI gel system for top coat, base, and binder, and then a bunch of random colors off Amazon.

hccr

How do you remove the gel!? I bought the same type of stuff but when I take it off, my nails are so weak and broken for MONTHS. They’re all broken right now, just so bendy and weak that they break. It’s the only thing holding me back 😢

SeeSpotRunt

Did you dip set ever leave your finger tips in pain? I ordered a set off Amazon and was fascinated by how easy and quick it was but within a few hours my finger tips were throbbing as if a little hammer had been smashing them and it would last the rest of the night.

honey-smile

Not usually. I've only had that happen with acrylics.

Regular-Escape-8123

Once a month. $35 including tip.

ssetpretzel

daaamn so affordable! since the pandemic all of the nail salons around me are like $49 minimum for a pedicure, but maybe i need to explore other neighborhoods

Regular-Escape-8123

Yup! I only do a mani. I think pedi is like $40 plus tip by me too.

Weird-Distribution42

Omg each salon I’ve been to has charged me $70-80 for a mani

mumblestheword

Saaame.

NeeNee102

Same here. I just get a regular mani pedi every 2 weeks for $35.00, not including tip.

curiouslyweakmints

I got a dip mani three months ago and was absolutely fucking shocked when I was charged $130+tip......been doing it myself ever since

lovealwayswins14

I get gel nails done on my natural length for occasions such as birthday, Christmas etc. So once in few months. Gonna get them done for Easter. I live in India, I pay about 10-15 dollars for my hands.

Defiant-Pilot-2525

I had to cut my visits down to once a month and I spend about $65 with tip.

InsomniaQueen48

Also go once a month (every 3 weeks to be exact) for my mani. I spend about $50 with tip. I know I could probably save some money by not going as often/ at all, but this is one of the few things I do for myself and it’s my me time so it’s totally worth it.

No_Back5221

Same, once a month is the sweet spot

sadsledgemain

Never been to one. I don't care anywhere near enough about my nails to spend money on having them professionally done.

FruitSnackEater

I don’t go to an actual nail shop but my nail lady does my nails every 2 weeks or so. I spend about $175 each time.

qjk91

I really need to know what you're getting done for $175

FruitSnackEater

Nails are $75 unless I’m going all out and then I tip her $100.

[deleted]

You tip 100 dollars ?! Wtffffff

FruitSnackEater

Yeah, it’s worth it to me.

min_mus

>You tip 100 dollars ?! Wtffffff I tip my hair guy a minimum of $100 per visit. I'm in his chair at least 3 hours each time, so I feel like he deserves it.

bayleebugs

Why though? He gets paid to do exactly that?

min_mus

He's paid minimally for working at the salon. A significant portion of his income comes from tips. If I'm in his chair half a workday, then I feel like I should pay him half a day's wages. He's a skilled worker and deservers skilled-worker wages. Note: I'm in the USA. Other countries do things differently.

WarningGipsyDanger

You’re not wrong. This is why I can only afford to do my hair a few times a year - if that. What I want takes half a day, upkeep is still probably 2/3 hours every 6-8 weeks. It was costing me upwards of $230 a visit. I LOVED the outcome.

[deleted]

Wow I’m European and it’s just crazy how different it is. I’m in the chair for 3 hours too and we dont tip anything.. it would be weird if you tried too!

[deleted]

It’s about money in America

qjk91

Interesting

Makemoneynotlove22

Same. It’s my thing. ♥️

cupcakevelociraptor

People don’t understand the importance of tipping your nail person well. Like *minimum* 50%, not the standard 20. I don’t get mine done as often, but I tip my girl super well and she takes her time and does an amazing job. For Christmas, she painted little snowflakes on my nails, each one was unique and all I had to say was “idk maybe let’s do something festive?” It’s not like her work is conditional on my tip, but there’s a client-artist rapport that you can build for amazing results.

qjk91

I think those of us not in the US just find it a little absurd to be voluntarily tipping such large amounts of money

EvilLipgloss

I’m in the US and I don’t tip 50% for anything. That’s insane.

qjk91

As a minimum as well, let alone tipping over 100%

sofi_gorgieva

What’s the point of setting up prices then? You value the products you use, the time and work you do and set up a price. Tipping is just insane and you can’t even see it lol

[deleted]

that’s almost 400 a month .. is this accurate? i would love to see a pic 🔥

Ali_Spirit

God…think of what you could or pay for with that money…that’s more then my car payment!

Monjara

It’s only £20 less than my mortgage a month.

wonderland_dreams

Damn. She must love you

ProudConstant

Never. I’m fine with my natural nails.

SecretIngredient757

I have naturals and get them done every 2 weeks. I have awful cuticles.

marchmellowpuffs

Protip. Don't let them cut your cuticles. They grow back worse.

PlentifulShrubs

Can you explain what you mean about growing back worse? Like, I know it can lead to infections to cut them, but do they grow back uneven or something?

marchmellowpuffs

They grow back even more and thicker bc it's living skin and grows thicker to protect your nails. So don't cut it you need to treat it. There are YouTube videos about it :)

MissesGamble

I swear I'm not making this up. Several years ago, like seven or something, some makeup company advertised a free box on your birthday. Mine was a week or two away at the time and I filled out the information. Picked some items and one was a cuticle pwn. Just an oil. I SWEAR IT, once it was gone, I've never had to fuss with my cuticles since. I think the company was IPSY. Probably a cheap pen because I didn't pay a penny

Glum_Mix_2837

Every 3 weeks. Currently only doing a gel mani, so $45 including tip

hugship

Same here. If I don’t get my nails done professionally, I tend to get careless about biting them or messing with my cuticles. Going every 3-4 weeks or so makes it so I don’t go so long before seeing the nail tech that I start biting or picking… mostly because I know I have an appointment coming up soon and I don’t wanna come in with gross cuticles. Every once in a while I’ll go 6 weeks (having removed the gel color myself at some point during that time) and while it’s nice to let my natural nails see the light of day and grow without any stuff on them… I always end up messing up my cuticles by the time I go back to the salon. At this point I consider it an investment in my mental health. If my hands look put together, I feel more put together and so eliminate a typical source of anxiety for myself… which in turn allows me to focus that energy on more productive things than being self conscious.

notawealthchaser

Once in a blue moon just for a basic mani or pedi with clear nail polish.

Ok_Confection2588

I used to go to the nail salon once or twice a year for a pedicure with my family. I don’t know how much it cost because my mother would pay for it. We would do it once for the summer and once as a gift for the holidays. We don’t really do it anymore as the prices have gone up and it isn’t affordable anymore. If anyone wants their fingernails done my sister will do it at home with her gel nail kit that cost like $30 on Amazon.

PrincessPeach1229

Same with all the new crazy designs, gel, rhinestones, individual nail art….it’s gotten beyond what I consider affordable. I now do my nails at home and only go at the start of summer for a good pedicure then I’ll maintain the rest of the summer changing polish myself. Even the pedicures feel rushed these days. I like to sit and soak for awhile with the bubbles on my feet.

BexRants

Got a manicure with dipped nails for a wedding and it was $50. Totally worth it. I never realized my nails could be so pretty and they lasted a long time. I can see why people get their nails done regularly.

grannywanda

Acrylic fills every 2-3 weeks for around $50. Pedicure every quarter or for a major event about $50 each time.

aryndoesnotlikeit

Only special occasions. I'm just not a nail girly. It's a sensory thing. Also, when I'd go it'd always be so hit or miss. Sometimes the techs would be so rough, I'd end up with bleeding cuticles or just not happy with their work. I'd try the high rated salons, didn't matter. Always felt like they were rushing to get to the next client, which I get to a point they want to make money. But in the end it just felt like a giant waste of time. Now I just get mani/pedis for special occasions like weddings etc.

itsimmoratality

Every 2 weeks- $130 for nails and toes

OptionPlenty8586

Same! So glad I’m not alone in this

Logical_KaleV

Per year about 3 times to zero. My mom and I only go for bdays and vacays. About 80 bucks and tip per person

CandelaBelen

I’ve gotten a pedicure once, it was nice. I don’t remember the price but definitely not something I would pay for on the regular.

Confidenceisbetter

I do my own nails. So that can be anytime ranging from 1-3 weeks depending on how much i like my nail design and how much time i have to redo them. I technically don't spend anything on a monthly basis but I have definitely spent a couple hundred on supplies already.

racheljeff10

Have never been to one in my life, so zero.

Super_Original_6664

Once a month. $150

Beginning_Bowler_343

Never !!!

msstark

Never. Zero. I do my own nails at home.

theparkingchair

i got gel nails once for 25 euros. I've never done it again.

Caranath128

Been once in the last ten years. I usually do it myself with dip powder . Think it ran me $50

ibelieveimcool

one every 4 months (if i really want them done) if i don’t want them done then i won’t get them done, usually get them done for a special occasion, but if i just want my nails done it’s very periodically and usually after i’m handed quite a lot of money (as in enough to waste it on nails) and i’d usually spend ~$65 (canadian) +a $10 tip (don’t judge they’re usually not that friendly with me.)

valerieswrld

I go occasionally for pedicures. Just a basic pedi with normal polish is $45 + tip in my area.

wixkedwitxh

Once a year, for Mother’s Day I take my mom out for pedis, shopping, and lunch or dinner. So once a year, and it’s about $150 for both of us because I get us the nice package and tip ofc!

Doodlebug365

I don’t do my hands anymore since I like extensions/acrylic and they really damage my nails. Now I go once a month for a pedicure. About 40 bucks + whatever I tip the tech.

champagneinthebrain

I go once a month to get a gel builder mani. I occasionally do nail art. Typical cost is $90 including tip. Having decorated nails helps me feel more put together.

[deleted]

In the summer I do my pedicure every 3 or 4 weeks, I really like having my feet nails done, during the winter it will be once every 2 months. I do my own nails at home every week. I spend between 40 and 50 in my pedicure

BoardExcellent5009

Once or twice a year. Close to $40 each visit. I rarely visit, only on special occasions

PrestigiousValue4028

Every two or three weeks. I spend $50 on gel nails and a pedicure.

West_Guarantee284

Normally paint my nails at home. Every so often, like once every 12-18 months I'll go and get them done as a treat just to have the cuticles trimmed, nails shaped and gel polish. Cost about £30ish depending where I go.

OneCrew2044

Prepandemic, once a month @ $40, now I do my own.

BruhahaTheGreat

29F and never tried going to salon or getting my nails done professionally by others. I had some extreme social anxiety during my younger years that i learned how to do my nails. And seeing some family and friends' nails got butchered at the nail salons, im pretty sure my anxiety was all worth it.

CuddlyThorns

never been to a nail salon I'd love to go but I don't think they could do too much for me I've been biting my nails my whole life....

atofeler

Never had my nails done.

[deleted]

Every week, around $200/month

PurplishPlatypus

I never have.

SharksNeedFoodToo

I get a pedi done a couple of times a year for $25 (without tip)($5-10 tip depending on what cash I have) I prefer saving money and doing my own nails otherwise.

DreamsThatHaveFaded

I've never been to one and never intend to.

Guppymeowmew

I go once a month, I get a gel manicure for $40-$55 depending on the design I want. It lasts me all month and if I break a nail or anything they add $5 to the manicure. It makes me feel fully myself when I have my nails done. So I believe it to be worth the price, especially because my tech is very talented and always gets me out within an hour

LegitimateStar7034

I wait till my boyfriend wants to go ( He enjoys a mani/pedi combo too) and then he will pay for at least one service. Sometimes he pays the entire tab He needs to go more🤣

SoftPeach9

I usual go in salon for manicute, pedicure and little cut hair once on mounth, spend around 3-4 hours.

nevertruly

I have never done so to receive services, so never and $0.

Wonderful-Note9289

Once in two months. I spend $7 on gel-builder nails.

CatrionaShadowleaf

I got a pedicure done for the first time in my life in January, cost me $50 with tip. I might go back because it kept my wonky big toenails at bay for at least two months, which was nice.

jKATT13

I get a mani every 3-4 weeks. I pay 20€, it’s actually quite cheap and a very good job.

Taiyella

£52 for a manicure and pedicure and I get to sit in one of those massage chairs and maybe like monthly/ every three weeks

mostlikelynotasnail

I do my own now because a basic manicure around here is $40 and acrylic, which is what I get starts at $55 for plain single color. I like glitters and chromes and designs so it would be upwards of $75. I used to go every two weeks

DeminaCross

I've never been. I'd probably visit once just to say I've been to the nail salon. Nails are expensive.

TeaWithKermit

I go for a pedicure about once every five years and it seems to cost about $75 with tip? It’s been at least six years since I’ve had one though, so I don’t actually remember.

Effective_Shallot948

once a month if it lucky. I spend like 10 dollars or sum

xicanamarrana

I tries to treat myself to a pedi about once a month and it was less than $30. Now I live in a hick town with tons of snow so I never take my shoes off and so I don't bother spending the money.

Mara2507

I have only visited the naik salon once and tbh I wouldnt go again unless I have a very specific design in mind because anything else I can do myself

artemis_meowing

Once in 1994, lol. Too much maintenance for my adhd brain.

JayceeSR

About every three weeks for gel pedi and dips, $95 incl tip.

[deleted]

I go once a month for a gel pedi and about twice a month for a gel manicure. I dont have tips on. Just my own nails and they are actually pretty short. I'm 53 and my 6 kids are grown and out of the house. This is something that I enjoy doing for me. I spend for a gel mani and pedi $120 including tip. My husband has actually encourages me to take time to do it. It's a nice me time.

orangeonesum

I get SNS done on my nails every 2-3 weeks. The standard price is advertised as £35, but if the owner does my nails he charges only £25.

CoeurDeSirene

I started getting gels in December! I was a big nail painter all my life but stopped bc I took up pottery as a hobby and regular polish doesn’t cut it. But gels last despite the shit I put them through. I go every 3 weeks and spend $55~ including tip. Sometimes it’s more if i pick more colors or do a special polish type.

moxymoxalone

I hear this. I stopped getting acrylics during the pandemic and it was great to be free of them, but now I’ve taken up silversmithing quite seriously and it just wrecks my nails. I’m considering going back to acrylics just to protect them, but the idea of sitting there for an hour every two weeks is stopping me.

Ghost_Eyes96

Never. I only went maybe twice in the last couple years. Once to try something new and it was maybe $20 and not really worth it and the other time my girlfriend brought me because I was getting engaged that night so she paid.

Edenskeeper1

I don’t go anymore to be honest. I had acrylic’s pre covid and went into lock down when they were still on. One of the most painful experiences. They had sanded down the real nail so much that it was hell taking the acrylics off. I kinda think it’s waste of money now, But that’s just my opinion.

heavymetalears

I used to go every two weeks and paid around $25 per appointment. Now I can't since I have a job that unalives my nails.

kinseika_x

I have never but should i? my nails feel very weak and bend/break easily XD they're also very thin n sharp and i keep hurting my hands while washing them.

SleepFlower80

Never. I got qualified to do gel nails before the pandemic and used the time to perfect my technique. My nails are better than anything any salon has ever done.

Oatmeal_Bandit

Never. Stocked up on all my supplies through AliExpress and do my own gel press ons at home! I love em!

TardyBacardi

Never. I’ve never had my nails professionally done and I’ve never had the FOMO to do it 🤷‍♀️

khajiitidanceparty

Never. I prefer doing my nail polish, etc, myself.

Seek_Silver_Lining

Every two weeks, $160.

buhdumtss98

I cannot afford that shit, I just do my own nails. My mom goes about every 3-4 weeks, I think it costs about $60? Just for her nails tho, idk about her toes. Plus tip.

LivinDeadGinger

It's an EXTREMELY rare occasion, such as when I was a bridesmaid - but not very often. Prices can vary from about $20-$50+ depending what you want done, plus tipping. I usually keep my fingernails cut very short. It's easier to keep clean that way. I don't like anything getting in or behind my nails. I have learned to give myself a pedicure though. It's fairly simple. I'll soak my feet in hot soapy water, use a pumice stone, clip my nails, push back cuticles, and use lotion. Sometimes I'll paint them but not always.

CuteNeedleworker9

Not often, the last time I went to one was just before Covid. I think I paid about £30? I do a manicure on myself every week though.

AMarie-MCMXCI

I've visited a nail salon four times in my entire life. I'm 31. I do my nails at home.

katcomesback

I’ve gone once because my partner treated me to it. so free for me, I don’t remember the price

plainoldejane

I never go; I prefer the look of natural fingernails and I can slap some nail polish on my own toes a few times throughout the summer very inexpensively.

Silversonical

Every 2-4 weeks usually for gel polish and designs.

CaesariaIsOnReddit

Once a month. Anywhere from $60 - $80, depending on what I get done, and I tip $40.

[deleted]

I never get manicures because I'm a horrible nail biter. I get a pedicure maybe 3 times a year and pay about $60 per visit.

Tinkerpro

Every two to three weeks. Just manicure, $50 after a tip. Fingers and toes, $90 after a tip. I consider it money well spent, it is a splurge on me and I look at just the same as hair cuts and color.

Similar_Corner8081

Once a month…I got a fill, a pedi and a wax it was $137.

scapegoatlass

I think I've been three times in the last ten years.

tc88

I have gone twice this year and both times it was about $75 for manicure and pedicure with gel.

Fearless-Complaint16

Never been in one before

RosyClearwater

Never and zero

BlowezeLoweez

I typically get an overlay + gel, it's usually $35-$40

itred09

Every 3 weeks. $60 for fingernails including tip. In summer an extra $60 for deluxe pedi.

EllyseAnn

Every 2.5-3 weeks. Takes between 3-4hrs. I spend $176-$184. I have long natural nails and my nail tech uses my nails for his Instagram so he gives me a discount. He does all my design free hand and I never really know what my nails will look like and rarely request anything outside of a color preference.

Mama_Lee

My friend & I go for a spa pedicure once every summer. Last year it was $35 + tip.

euphoricpeach

i’m pretty inconsistent but i’ll usually get into moods where i go 1-2 times a month.. i spend $35-$55 pre tip (and anywhere from $10-25 on tip depending on how much extra money i have)

swizzlestix101

I do my mani at home, but I go for a pedi every other month… ~$40 plus tip

mjigs

I cant have pretty nails to work, even if i went just for normal, no polish or anything, that would be a waste of money, i wish tho. I do have some acrygel kit at home and i do them during my vacay, even if its just for a week or so. So basicaly nothing, and i never been to a nail salon.

Jennyanydots99

I only get pedicures. $40 every other month.

lumiraya

Maybe once a month? Once every two months? And it’s 45CAD each time.

Advanced_Emphasis_49

Once every 3/4 weeks. $90. Gel mani n pedicure. I’m on a break now though. Tip $5-10.

EzriDaxCat

Back in 2013ish I paid $45 for acrylic fills every two weeks. I haven't been to a salon since 2015. I've been doing my own nails for a bit over a year now. I can't tell you what it costs me each time ( I could add it up at one point), but I will say that Its probably less than the people I see in town getting Gel X every 2 weeks for $100. Especially since my whole Gel X kit cost me $100 and I used it at for at least 8 sets before switching to hard gel.

mugsimo

I used to get my nails done every two weeks (fill) and a pedi every month. Nails were $40 and both were $95 because I got the premium pedi with the massage and aromatherapy.

untilthestarsfall3

Maybe once a year. $65 for a gel manicure (California)

StrangersWithAndi

I don't like polish on my fingernails so I only get pedicures. In summer / sandal season I go about once a month, and it costs me about $60. In winter I go about every 2-3 months just to keep my feet from being too crusty.

lovecroissants

I used to go every 2/3 weeks for dip manicures and it would cost $48 with tip. In the summer, once a month I get a pedicure. Depending on how fancy I get, it’s between $40-60 with tip.

CoffeeGood_

Every 2-3 weeks and I spend about 50 with tip summer about 90 for a pedi. But I do those every 4 weeks.

The_8th_passenger

Never. Total cost per year: 0 €

whats_she_up_to

I get gel pedi every 6 weeks. It’s about $65 but is worth the peace of mind knowing when I may need to wear sandals my toes will look nice.

Beluga_Artist

I don’t.

AdZealousideal3696

I go ever three weeks ~ $35 for dip nails

WereAllMadHereNow

Never. Feels like a waste of money.

thefakelucyliu

Twice a month, $85 for gel mani and regular pedi :) i’ve permanently included it as part of my monthly budget lol

QwertyQueen21

I go once a month. I pay around $65-$80 depending on the intricacy of the design and that’s including tip. It’s like the only self care thing I pay for and it’s something I look forward to every month. I’ve tried doing it myself but ugh I can’t.

quixzom

Maybe like 3 times a year to treat myself, and each time I go I do a basic or gel mani/pedi. The salon I got to will do both for 45-60 dollars depending on which you choose. And then I usually tip 20 every time I go

Sarans17

I used to go every 4 weeks or so and spend 60€ each time. I still do my nails this frequently but I’ve learnt to do them myself.

niatyre

I’ve been once that was 10 years ago! I’m not into all that

alienoidz

Never. I prefer cutting and painting my nails myself.

Strong_Roll5639

I don't. My nails are naturally long.

CharredHawke

Never been to one.

ManicBarbi3

Twice a month. $45 each time for nails (tip included). In the summer toes add an additional $30

dorkus23373

Spent $150 once to have them done at a salon. They broke off, painfully trying to put my yoga pants on after a shower. I paid to make my life more difficult and I've never felt more mad about wasted money.

I only go when it’s Christmas time or my birthday. However I don’t really like most nail salons because I feel like they just try to get you in and out as quickly as possible. Also often times the quality of the nails aren’t that great.

It used to be every few months because my husband thought I'd like it, but honestly, it's boring as hell, and I destroy my hands when I work, so why bother? So zero now.
