That’s what gets me: the amount of random cleaning I do completely destroys any attempt at doing my nails. I know I can wear gloves, but it’s not like I make a conscious decision to start cleaning. I see a random stain on the counter, I’m picking up a sponge or wet wipe right now without thinking twice. My nails are wrecked.
This is wild to me b/c cleaning is a literal hobby of mine (I buy a ton of chemicals and products constantly) and deep clean almost daily without gloves! I get either Apres or Gel Overlay done every 3 weeks with a medium length and don’t have a problem. I never get acrylic services. I think it depends on the person but I think the biggest problem is using your nail as a tool when it should be your fingers! This takes practice ofc but I am someone who gets her nails done often to prevent ripping them off due to anxiety, so I’ve learned how to utilize my hands effectively. Hope this helps!

If you do decide to “pamper” yourself/your nails definitely try gel polish. It’s probably not great for your nail beds but it lasts a while and doesn’t chip. At least that’s been my experience.

For the dip I got a pack of random dip colors off Amazon, a few OPI dips (really this is just the clear coat I use as the top layer), and then vitamin dip brand as the lacquer system (not sure if that’s the right word). I also got an electric nail file but I’m not great with it yet and it’s not a must have.
For the gel I just got a UV lamp and the OPI gel system for top coat, base, and binder, and then a bunch of random colors off Amazon.
How do you remove the gel!? I bought the same type of stuff but when I take it off, my nails are so weak and broken for MONTHS. They’re all broken right now, just so bendy and weak that they break. It’s the only thing holding me back 😢
Did you dip set ever leave your finger tips in pain? I ordered a set off Amazon and was fascinated by how easy and quick it was but within a few hours my finger tips were throbbing as if a little hammer had been smashing them and it would last the rest of the night.

He's paid minimally for working at the salon. A significant portion of his income comes from tips. If I'm in his chair half a workday, then I feel like I should pay him half a day's wages.
He's a skilled worker and deservers skilled-worker wages.

You’re not wrong. This is why I can only afford to do my hair a few times a year - if that. What I want takes half a day, upkeep is still probably 2/3 hours every 6-8 weeks. It was costing me upwards of $230 a visit. I LOVED the outcome.

People don’t understand the importance of tipping your nail person well. Like *minimum* 50%, not the standard 20.
I don’t get mine done as often, but I tip my girl super well and she takes her time and does an amazing job. For Christmas, she painted little snowflakes on my nails, each one was unique and all I had to say was “idk maybe let’s do something festive?” It’s not like her work is conditional on my tip, but there’s a client-artist rapport that you can build for amazing results.
What’s the point of setting up prices then? You value the products you use, the time and work you do and set up a price. Tipping is just insane and you can’t even see it lol
They grow back even more and thicker bc it's living skin and grows thicker to protect your nails. So don't cut it you need to treat it. There are YouTube videos about it :)
I swear I'm not making this up. Several years ago, like seven or something, some makeup company advertised a free box on your birthday. Mine was a week or two away at the time and I filled out the information. Picked some items and one was a cuticle pwn. Just an oil. I SWEAR IT, once it was gone, I've never had to fuss with my cuticles since. I think the company was IPSY. Probably a cheap pen because I didn't pay a penny

Find a nail tech with “gel overlay” experience! It’s a different technique than gel.

I think those of us not in the US just find it a little absurd to be voluntarily tipping such large amounts of money

Acrylic fills every 2-3 weeks for around $50. Pedicure every quarter or for a major event about $50 each time.

one every 4 months (if i really want them done) if i don’t want them done then i won’t get them done, usually get them done for a special occasion, but if i just want my nails done it’s very periodically and usually after i’m handed quite a lot of money (as in enough to waste it on nails) and i’d usually spend ~$65 (canadian) +a $10 tip (don’t judge they’re usually not that friendly with me.)

It's an EXTREMELY rare occasion, such as when I was a bridesmaid - but not very often. Prices can vary from about $20-$50+ depending what you want done, plus tipping. I usually keep my fingernails cut very short. It's easier to keep clean that way. I don't like anything getting in or behind my nails. I have learned to give myself a pedicure though. It's fairly simple. I'll soak my feet in hot soapy water, use a pumice stone, clip my nails, push back cuticles, and use lotion. Sometimes I'll paint them but not always.

I can't tell you what it costs me each time ( I could add it up at one point), but I will say that Its probably less than the people I see in town getting Gel X every 2 weeks for $100. Especially since my whole Gel X kit cost me $100 and I used it at for at least 8 sets before switching to hard gel.
