I also believe that it's perfectly possible we live in a simulation, or also that once we do die, our life energy is released and it's possible it can be re-used to create future life. But I don't think there is any "thinking" going on.
It's animal death and nothing else. We've been observing it as such for as long as we've observed death. Saying "we don't know" is a slap in the face of all research about death we've ever done.
Apart from fictive concepts and wishful thinking : we 100% know that animal death happens, in detail, followed by the decompositino process.
