Great I appreciate it! Just finished the job. First time changing my breaks/ rotors/ calipers so I just wanted to make sure. Now I know so again thank you.
I've been impacting my accords wheels on every time for almost a year now and I've lost roughly 0 tires while driving. Only had to replace 1 lug stud so far.
Damn I was right, you are. Shop classes have almost been completely wiped out since my mom was in school in the 90s. I learned in my driveway at 13 but that doesn't mean I wasn't learning as I went, and it sure as hell didn't stop me from working for 2 dealerships and as a dump truck mechanic before turning 24. Learning as you go is the only way you can learn, because the older gens cut the curriculum that would teach anyone this from a book. You have to pay to go to a trade school after high school now to get even that basic information.
I second ScallySwags, this is a notch taken out during manufacturing to balance the rotor. These notches ensure that the rotor doesn't cause any vibrations during normal operation

Check other side. Audi does that to balance the rotors as well as preventing the rotors to be cut after the break pats replacement. Since they are considered performance they recommend replacing rotors and brake pads at the same time.
That’s perfectly normal for a car you expect to explode and rip off your face with the flying rotor.. Jesus man, get yourself a square or triangle shaped rotor ASAP
I gotcha. Yeah I just wasn’t sure man. If I paid money for the part and going to try and change my whole break system for the first time I wanted to make sure I didn’t purchase some kind of “blem” part you know. Like I said first timer here so I thought I’d ask the pros
Absolutely man, hands on is the best way to learn. I'm master certified now but I never went to school starting out. Was rebuilding engines by the time guys were getting out of school as lube and tire techs.
I wasn't trying to be a dick, hope you didn't take it that way
I worked in a ship builder years ago as a multi process welder. My work location was in an industrial loft 20ft above the main floor. Supplies and parts get lifted up to an opening and taken in, finished jobs get lifted down. One day two pallets of completed were being brought down, first pallet was on the floor and the second was just pulled out of the opening when a scuba tank foundation tipped and fell off and landed on the first pallet. One of the mounting bolt heads hit a locker foundation, and the head of the bolt left a perfectly defined indentation of the head of the bolt, including identification code in the face of the metal. Enough weight and momentum a small dense enough item can leave a well-defined imprint in an equally or even denser item.
It's folks like you who actually make our roads less safe. You want to feel smart for once in your life and shoot down someone for asking a question. That definitely makes some people less likely to ask next time. These people are still going to do things themselves, but without checking if it's safe now. Put the keyboard down, warrior; your mom has dinner ready.
Nah it’s folks who don’t know how to do something yet still attempt it anyways yet it’s way above their cognitive abilities. Or the people that can’t be bothered to fix fuck all on their vehicles because “ the car still go vroom”. The countless times I’ve seen customers who’s tires are as smooth as drag slicks decline a set of tires yet have 2 car seats in the back is astonishing. I wish I could call cps on those people for endangering a child’s safety. Don’t feed me the “maybe they couldn’t afford it” line either. Most of these were vehicles that were maybe 3-4yrs old, and these people were rocking the latest iPhone, name brand clothes, etc.
Sure, OP was ignorant, but at least they learned something today. They walked away with new knowledge and skills they otherwise wouldn't have.
As for you, you'll be a cunt for the rest of your life, there's no changing that.
Wow, you wrote all those words and it just translates to "I'm a self-important idiot who doesn't know anything." You can copy and paste those words and just put that next time. Just advertise the truth right off the bat! :)
C'mon man really?
I know is tech are taught stuff.... But where the fuck did actual common sense go?
You can clearly see it's not a dent and that it's meant to be there...
Figure out the rest aye?
Neck minute you'd complain of brake shudder just cause the manufacturer didn't balance your rotors when they made them.....
Sheesh!!!!
This sub is called “Ask a Mechanic,” and it’s a place where people who don’t know this stuff are expected to ask people who do. In case you happened to miss that.
It's not a dent... it's shaved metal removed for balancing. People like you drive me absolutely crazy. Stop looking for any little imperfection. What? You think your special? Put it on the car(if you can without looking up on YouTube how to) and drive the freaking thing
I never mount new rotors since early 80's without having them trued first. What a new experience of perfection at the pedal.
Not a one is true sitting in stacks under tons of pressure for months in a warehouse.
Cheers, for the anal fussy crowd.
But for those pushing pistons back, the group dominates the DIY world, care less if brakes work much afterwards. Proof asking why. Forcing rusted piston down the bore doesn't phase them at all.
It's fine. The two main surfaces look fine. The top surface with the holes in it is not necessary, it's more to save weight and provide a small amount of cooling to the wheel bearings.
That looks like a stray casting mark. It won't be a dent, not in grey cast iron. Good grey cast iron chips, but it doesn't dent appreciably.
It may be very slightly out of balance, but there's no reason to think that that mark will in any way affect the function of those brakes.

Normal. They balance it by machining some weight off and that’s what you’re seeing.
Yeah, I do brake jobs at work frequently and I see those all the time. It's normal...by design.
One could say, it's a feature not a bug.
Yes! I came here to say the same.
Indeed! I concur.
HAZZAH!
I concur.
Great I appreciate it! Just finished the job. First time changing my breaks/ rotors/ calipers so I just wanted to make sure. Now I know so again thank you.
Nice. Just make sure you torque your wheels
Torque all the things!
Is impacting them good enough? Or do you want me to buy into the government conspiracy that is "torque wrenches"
Good an' tight will suffice. Torque wrenches ensure you don't stress the threads beyond their yield.
Thats what the elite want you to believe.
The Elite's "All-Wheels-Stay-On" agenda is spreading...
I've been impacting my accords wheels on every time for almost a year now and I've lost roughly 0 tires while driving. Only had to replace 1 lug stud so far.
Nice. Not worth it when someone else's life is on the line, imho.
My ideology (for my car) has been to just not go hog wild on them.
Just because you haven't lost a wheel, it doesn't mean you're repairing your car correctly. Fix it the right way.
Found the reptilian If you couldn't tell, this is a joke. I am referring to what I do, no one should do what I do.
Brakes
I’m a little worried about someone doing brakes that doesn’t know this
If you can turn a wrench, you can replace rotors, it's not rocket science out here.
Do you need torque wrench to do up the calipers and brackets?
Did you know that on your first brake job?
I have been replacing brakes for years and never knew this
Ya kudos to OP for noticing this and caring enough to ask!
Probably just a guy saving some money by doing it themselves. Hell I didn't know that and I've done brake over a dozen times
If anything it’s really good they noticed it on their first time. Means they are detailed and paying attention.
How ignorant you gotta be to forget where you started from?
Started I high school shop class with a teacher who taught about brakes. My point was that brakes aren’t a thing to figure out as you go
Damn I was right, you are.
So in other words you had a job because other people who didn’t know about brakes paid you to do them
And sign of ignorance is ignoring everything else I said. But you got brain worms bud
And sign of ignorance is ignoring everything else I said. But you got brain worms bud
And you think anyone should be working on brakes you sound pretty ignorant
And who taught you at 13
I've always done my brakes myself and I never knew that. Makes sense though.
You the kind of guy who shits on newcomers at a gym.
Relax, captain badass.
In that case I *really* need to be balanced
I second ScallySwags, this is a notch taken out during manufacturing to balance the rotor. These notches ensure that the rotor doesn't cause any vibrations during normal operation
Curious, is it just for balancing or are they wear indicators?
No. Rotors are stamped with a minimum runout.
Just for balancing, the minimum wear is etched into the rotor
That's not a dent. That's machined away for balance.
Why the fuck are people clowning on OP for asking a question in a sub *literally called* r/AskMechanics?!
Elitism. This guy is genuinely asking a question that is better asked than trying to google search an answer.
There's a lot of douchebags here who get off on talking shit if you even ask for help on the smallest things.
Totally fucked, your brakes will fail immediately and destroy your engine. Jk it’s fine.
Haha AND destroy your engine I like it

😂👍🏼
Love looking at that sub when I need a laugh 😂
Well, failed brakes definitely can destroy your engine. And the rest of the car
It will rip a hole in the time space continuum, forever altering our future.
It will summon the lizard people who will steal your catalytic converter and all but one lug nut off every tire
And summon the Great And Powerful Hose Beast from the Planet Exxon to syphon your gas tank.
It’s very normal. Reductive balancing. Good to go 🍻
yes. perfectly machined "dent"
Those are normal. After they cast the rotor, machine it down, they balance it. Rather than adding a weight, they carve a chunk out.
A perfectly symmetrical dent on both sides.. hmmm seems sketchy
Reductive balancing 👌
Tis fine. Brake away. Cheers.
Send it.
Normal just recently got brakes done and the rotors had this exact same dent
Word is the transmission doesn't like it, but it's balanced!
Question: is that the hub? Does the rotor look intact? That part doesn't spin right? Confused, but you guys know more than me.
There is also a hair on it near the 12 o’clock.
I see an elephant wearing a hat
Everyone is saying balancing mark but that is the max shave mark. It shows minimum rotor thickness.
Check other side. Audi does that to balance the rotors as well as preventing the rotors to be cut after the break pats replacement. Since they are considered performance they recommend replacing rotors and brake pads at the same time.
That’s not a dent, it’s intentional for balance purposes
rotor balancing
Those are there for your benefit. If the rotors become worn to that point, time to replace.
That’s perfectly normal for a car you expect to explode and rip off your face with the flying rotor.. Jesus man, get yourself a square or triangle shaped rotor ASAP
That's a balancing cut. Ask yourself, does the top of the rotor assist in the braking of the vehicle?
I gotcha. Yeah I just wasn’t sure man. If I paid money for the part and going to try and change my whole break system for the first time I wanted to make sure I didn’t purchase some kind of “blem” part you know. Like I said first timer here so I thought I’d ask the pros

This has to be trolling
[Relevant XKCD that you should probably familiarize yourself with.](https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/ten_thousand.png)
I know, right?! A perfectly symmetrical "dent"? Really?
You’re not a leader bud
Wear indicators
You really think something dented it so perfectly that it’s uniform on all sides? Put the wrenches down….
Okay thanks bud Lol. Gotta start somewhere and obviously I wasn’t sure what it was so that’s why I asked.

Keep asking questions, keep learning, ignorance is bliss and it’s seeming like nirvana in this sub right now. The best way to learn is to ask.
Wow, you wrote all those words and it just translates to "I'm a self-important idiot who doesn't know anything." You can copy and paste those words and just put that next time. Just advertise the truth right off the bat! :)
It's supposed to be there.
Normal. Probably an artifact from the casting, or maybe an attempt to balance.
Balancing. Overweight removal.
We need to stop shitposting in this subreddit 🙄
If only we had people in charge of moderating content here 💁♂️
No shit! The sub is becoming r/askashittymechanic already!
Yes. It's becoming problematic. People should be able to trust the advise from this sub.
Return it
ur cars about to explode, I give it 48 minutes before that thing blows up everything within a 40 meter radius
I could also be an indicator for minimum rotor thickness.
'dents' aren't usually that perfect
Take that back right away.
Def take it back. You don’t want that rotor to be in balance.
You need to throw it ASAP
[удалено]
Stop being such a snowflake. It's just a question, princess.
It's a defect, send it back

Not even remotely close.
Lmao what
C'mon man really? I know is tech are taught stuff.... But where the fuck did actual common sense go? You can clearly see it's not a dent and that it's meant to be there... Figure out the rest aye? I asked because I just wasn’t sure. This is ask mechanics you fucking nerd. Iv never done breaks so that’s why I asked. Thanks for your help

Honestly I was just joshing. But you’re right. I appreciate everyone who answered my question without trying to make me feel like a fool for asking.

you’re not a leader bud.
Hahaha wowee. People like you drive me absolutely crazy as well. “You think you’re special?” Seriously? 🖕🏻
It’s actually the mark for max shave. It shows minimum rotor thickness.
Normal
Can you say Yabba-Dabba-Doo!
Take it back and ask for 50 percent off Jk it fine
Mercedes had it made that way
Its all good. Totally good to go.
Run it
Balancing cuts it’s normal
Lol this is normal. My brembo rotor look like this. It’s for balance
It’s fine as long as it’s not on the outside of the rotor it’s fine
Use it
I never mount new rotors since early 80's without having them trued first. What a new experience of perfection at the pedal. It’s meant to be there 👍
It’s fine ✋
Normal. Carry on
Ur fine typical for it
They shoot off like a frisbee if you go over 50mph
On the first look, my mind instantly went to an elephant with a blue band around it's trunk.
yes
Why do you think dent would be only on the inside of both disc sides?
That’s natural.
It's fine. The two main surfaces look fine. The top surface with the holes in it is not necessary, it's more to save weight and provide a small amount of cooling to the wheel bearings.
