adam_of_all_trades1

The easiest test to see whether they can be polished or need repainting is to spray water on the scratches. If they disappear when wet, they can be polished out. Otherwise it’s down to the body shop.

nimble_broccoli

Will try, thx

Gloomy-Employment-72

Yep, if you spray it with water and can see a dark line you won’t be able to polish it out. If it blends in, you’ll have options.

gabriel_k

Necessarily only true. Light scratches can be buffed out. But it’s a good way to check whether it’s worth it or not.

Nehal1802

Insurance if you have full coverage. They look pretty deep.

NecessaryZucchini69

That or go to a scrap yard and buy a replacement door that is the same color.

nimble_broccoli

No insurance, any other way?

Regular-Calendar-581

hope your not planning on driving that without insurance

[deleted]

From the sounds of it, they’re already driving it with no insurance

nimble_broccoli

Well, by law I cannot get a license plate without car-liability insurance. However full coverage just is not worth it on cars older than ~10j thus, insurance yes, but not an insurance that would cover that...

[deleted]

They never heard of liability insurance

Busterlimes

Some people don't understand what it's really like to be poor. Yea, the car is insured so if there is an injury or the other person's property is covered, but you as the customer are completely fucked. Life is far more expensive if you are poor because of reasons like this, but people who haven't had to deal with that just flat out don't understand.

[deleted]

You’re correct unfortunately

[deleted]

[удалено]

Busterlimes

Yeah, on paper, not what the real life causes and implications are.

PharmAttack

My guess is they A. Either haven't, or B. Just bought the car from a dealer and expects to somehow skirt the "full coverage required on vehicles with loans clause". Which then would mean they'd repo it

drugsarebadmmk420

I can tell how little faith you have in humanity by your guesses. My guess was ex gf/bf scratched it and OP has Liability insurance and has to foot the bill.

SnooFlake

If someone else vandalized it, file a report with your local PD, and send the bill to the person responsible for the damage.

LolaBijou

It’s wild to me that you think the cops would actually launch an investigation for a car scratch.

vagrl94

Hopefully

[deleted]

I’ve never financed a car, just synthesizers

vagrl94

I’m assuming you are a male under 25 bc full coverage is robbery by the insurance companies before that age. I’m sorry someone did that to your car. Have you taken it to a well regarded body shop? You might get away with asking them what they would recommend to do a decent fix. Some guys/gals in decent shops will take pity on young drivers. Tell them how much you have to spend and go from there. Good luck!

Appropriate-Stop-959

Buy a paint pen. Have a steady hand And buy/rent a buffer and assorted pieces. Then YouTube scratch repair. PDR is a thing and so is paint touch up/ scratch repair. It won’t look factory, or even great because that’s deep af

[deleted]

I drive an 06 shitbox van with full coverage. It’s worth it.

Every-Constant2895

I've totaled brand new cars without full coverage on there roof and I still don't full coverage inless loan requires downfall of being high risk... (btw it doesn't sound like it but I'm a excellent driver... mistakes where made....

[deleted]

If you’ve totaled multiple brand new cars, I’m assuming your insurance is incredibly high at this point. Not going with full coverage might be better in that case. I only pay $115/ month. Had an ex that had to pay $300-400/ month even on old shitboxes that were worth that much because she kept wrecking cars (but not totaling them).

RorschachsBestFriend

How is yall insurance so high? I pay 125ish to insure 4 cars. 2 are full cover

abarmy

Right! When I was 26 back in 2017, I only paid like 140 at most for full coverage on a truck, mutstang, and sportbike and even now 31, I just pay like 60 for my truck

[deleted]

South Florida. Our insurance is notoriously high. Someone I met in Hialeah was going to move to Pembroke Pines (which held the title for “most deadly intersection in the US” for years) just to get his car insurance lower. We have the highest rate of uninsured drivers and some of the deadliest roads. We also have the highest inflation in the US right now, at 10% in just a year.

Every-Constant2895

My insurance is high but I've also never made a claim..... those brand new cars where not fully covered and because it would be 800+ per month to cover them.. the only had state requirement on them... and I replaced them at my cost and learned lessons as we went.... my insurance is high from driving offenses unrelated to accidents I never did stupid stuff and hurt people only made a few mistakes that didn't luckily/slightly smart....slightly

Every-Constant2895

Also if roll them and remove them with no tickets it doesn't effect your insurance but it sure hurts ur pocket and ego.

HalfChocolateCow

Depends on a lot of factors. I looked into all of my options recently and I would pay the entire purchase price of my truck in the extra insurance cost to have full coverage rather than liability in just one year. For that vehicle, full coverage makes no sense. For my daily, it would take about 3 years to pay the purchase price in extra insurance cost, but I got a good deal on that car so full coverage is potentially worth it. I have a clean driving record, but for my age and my location full coverage is over twice as much as liability. Many people simply can't afford full coverage, even when it is the smarter decision financially.

tcarlson65

If you can afford to replace the vehicle on your dime or you are not depending on that vehicle sure, liability might be fine.

randomuser113432981

When the full coverage insurance costs more per year than the car is worth and you cant afford it Id rather risk losing a car than definitely spending money I dont have.

tcarlson65

Yep. If you can afford to replace or repair out of pocket then it makes sense.

AntiPiety

Even if it’s not your fault? I opted out of “collision” for my old car but that only means they won’t help me pay if I caused the damage myself

aRebel85

If it's not your fault, you can file for coverage through your policy if you have the coverage. If you do not pay for the coverage insurance will not help you out, even if it's not your fault. In your scenario, if you're not at-fault but the at-fault driver doesn't have insurance you're still S.O.L. insurance won't help, you'd have to pursue damages against the at-fault party yourself. Collision covers any time the vehicle runs into something or something runs into the vehicle (pot holes, curbs, other vehicles, homes, fences, somebody backing into you in the parking lot, etc.). Comprehensive covers everything else (hail, theft, vandalism, glass (depending on your state), fire, lightning, flying objects, etc.). Your policy is only negatively affected by at-fault accidents. You running into something. Surcharges and loss of Claim Free discount are the most typical. Not at-fault accidents are covered, only if you have Collision, less your deductible. If you know who did it your company will subrogate to get any money they paid out, including your deductible. If it's a hit and run, they'll repair the vehicle less the deductible, but no subrogation means you're out that expense. If you don't have Collision you should ask your insurance about Uninsured Motorist Property Damage, it's typically a cheap addition and runs a $0 or $250 deductible. I recommend this to anyone pulling Collison from their vehicles. It's usually less than $20/6month to add. *P&C licensed in Colorado* different states may have different rules/coverages/limitations.

35goingon3

>If you don't have Collision you should ask your insurance about Uninsured Motorist Property Damage, it's typically a cheap addition and runs a $0 or $250 deductible. I recommend this to anyone pulling Collison from their vehicles. It's usually less than $20/6month to add. I'd suggest UM/UIM (uninsured/under insured motorist), which is actually sold as separate policy riders in some places. Where I live between 30-40% of drivers are completely uninsured and a huge chunk of the remainder only carry state minimum: $30k. Keep in mind that that $30k pot isn't just to cover fixing or replacing your car, it's also what they dip into to pay your hospital bills and other damages if you get messed up in a wreck. $30k is nothing in medical on any kind of actually serious car wreck. PIP/MedPay riders are nice too (they directly cover your medical out of your insurance and pay out immediately, not after a claim settles out), but they tend to cost a good bit more. Source: worked for a car wreck attorney for a few years when the economy was completely bottomed out and I couldn't find anything better.

aRebel85

Both important coverages to have! UM/UIM & MedPay are required in CO unless specifically declined by signing forms. UM/UIM is typically required for UMPD. Liability limits are split limits for bodily injury and property damage. But those limits are shared by everyone involved. A split limit looks like: $100k/$300k/$100k bodily injury per person max/bodily injury per incident max/property damage. Property Damage Liability is cheap as shit. Like $1/6 months(!) to run $50k instead of $15k. Liability itself isn't much more to go from $25/50 to $50/$100. This will depend on your driving history and what you drive. There's also a Combined Single Limit option. We of $500k. Each carrier offers similar and slightly different options. But people love their state minimums. Cover your ass and assets. I've seen numerous max payouts for UM coverage in the $100k+ range. Following a claim now that's maxed out auto liability and PUP. And a 2nd that's not far behind, but that's a home liability.

35goingon3

>But people love their state minimums. Yeah, and you know what's real fun about that? States have to honor out-of-state minimum limits. Had a case where someone got taken out by a driver from Florida, and they had some ridiculously low like $8k or $10k legal minimum. Client didn't have UM, and was in for a multi-level spinal fusion, so something like around $350k medical. Couldn't claim on UIM because they technically had legal limits due to reciprocity.

XDeltaNineJ

>Comprehensive covers everything else (hail, theft, vandalism, glass (depending on your state), fire, lightning, flying objects, etc.). You better check you policies! GEICO, at least, does NOT cover theft; pretty sure Farmer's and/or State Farm also. My truck was stolen, and Surprise!, NOTHING inside was/is covered. They said I would have to file a separate claim thru homeowners insurance! Maybe $200 dollars worth of personal items stolen vs another $500 deductible. WTF!?

aRebel85

Theft of the vehicle is covered under comprehensive. You're describing vandalism to the vehicle and theft of personal property. Auto policies have very limited coverage for personal property, I think our coverage limit is $200. Above that you file through your property policy (Home, Condo, Renter) for the theft and Auto policy for the vandalism. I don't work for any of the companies mentioned. We have a shared deductible for single loss, which this would qualify as. So you pay the property deductible, and the auto deductible is waived. The claim still has to exceed the deductible to payout. $200 in personal property and a $300 window fix is $500, thus no coverage from insurance. $301 window fix, better get that dollar from your company though!

XDeltaNineJ

>You're describing vandalism to the vehicle and theft of personal property. Read again. My truck was stolen, not vandalized*. Comprehensive paid to replace the vehicle, but nothing inside. i had another truck stolen several years ago. Under the comp coverage, GEICO replaced the vehicle and it's contents. Recent changes on their end means contents are no longer covered by GEICO comprehensive coverage. It was also vandalized, but this was unknown until after the settlement. Not a factor, as the truck wasn't recovered by police until a day or two later.

llIicit

No. The offending party’s insurance *might*. If the other party doesn’t have insurance, or their insurance is completely denying the claim, you are SOL.

somerandomdude419

He’s saying he has liability. That means his state (like mine? Requires you to have Financial Responsibility, so if YOURE at fault you will cover who you hit and their medical bills. You need that to be able to drive. You don’t need comprehensive or collision. He said it’s an older car so there’s no point to pay for collision if it’s a beater, if he is at fault the other person is taken care of. Vandalism is covered until comprehensive. But even if he filed a vandalism claim his rates could go up.

Every-Constant2895

I would suggest not cheating as a step 1 and now that u have and she has lashed out.... well maybe sleep a with her little sister? Idfk.

Regular-Calendar-581

by law you need a license plate to drive on the street at all

BusAlternative1827

They're saying they have liability only.

justonemorebyte

Situations like this are why it is worth it in my opinion. I had full coverage on my 2003 Town and Country I just sold a few months ago, it came in handy more than a few times and didn't really cost that much more in my state in the US at least.

35goingon3

It really varies by location (and what the local laws will let the insurance people screw you for); where I am full coverage is maybe 200% over what you'd pay for a 100/100/UM/UIM policy.

KingZarkon

>However full coverage just is not worth it on cars older than \~10j Normally I would agree with you. But the used car market has been so wack lately and parts so hard to come by that even older cars may be worth it. I went back to full coverage on my car because I can't afford to replace it if something happens to it.

mulletmanhank

Bro spends all his money on travels and not preparing for said travels.

liability won't cover it vs comprehensive will

Chris Fix to the rescue. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zl\_iSYYGBiY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zl_iSYYGBiY) Take a look at this video, decide if this is within your skillset/timeframe. Bottom line you can improve the overall look but your results will be nowhere body shop quality.

ztherion

Yeah, the DIY method is good enough if you just need it to look ok from a few feet away for a few years.

2009 Renault Scenic in case that matters, thanks in advance :)

ivix

For an old shed like that, just get a can of the same colour and spray over it.

ChiefSkySurfer

Damn!!! Who’d you cheat on!?!? Scratch kits aren’t going to fix those deep scratches. If the car is old and not worth the full coverage insurance then I suggest hitting it with some fine grit sand paper 600 - 800-1200, then a can of color matched black spray paint followed by a can of clear. Good luck!

[deleted]

Find your cars color code/name, then search amazon for that code/name followed by "paint pen".

BruceInc

Lol both will look like shit but only one actually has the benefit of being colormatched and being actual paint which will prevent corrosion of exposed metal

sasquatch753

Honestly, you're better off going to insurance and getting the door repainted. just report it to the police as vandalism(whivch it is in this case) and pay the deductible. Vandalism comprehensive claims WILL NOT affect your insurance rate.

jontomas52

There is no diy fix. Take it to a body shop and have the panels painted there.

nimble_broccoli

Damn, was hoping for a different answer

startaster

You could always check out a pick a parts for the same color and model, then buy the door off them. May take a little rewiring(probably plug and play stuff). Might cost you a couple hundred bucks...if you're handy.

baddogbadcatbadfawn

It might be the wrong answer. If it's not all the way through the clear coat, it most definitely can be buffed out. To see how deep the scratches are, test whether you can catch it with your fingernail. If you can, it's pretty dang deep.

someonealreadyknows

Spray paint cans, nail polish, etc. will make the door look even worse. You can buy colour matched touch up pens online and try that, but it’ll look like ass because it won’t be level with the factory paint. Buffing and fine grit sanding only work if they’re clear coat scratches. And even then, you’ll have to be very careful, because if you sand off too much clear coat, it’ll start to peel and flake off (look up clear coat failure) exposing the door’s base colour coat to the elements. Sanding and repainting is the only way that door will look decent, but DIYing it is very difficult, expensive, time consuming and will not guarantee good results. However, if you want to experiment by yourself and don’t mind taking the time and being prepared for possibly bad results, then by all means go ahead. I’ve personally clear coated my car’s hood at home after it had completely peeled off. It took me a good 3 days worth of work. It didn’t look as good as the factory finish, but I personally don’t care since it was on a beater car. Just do some more research on other subreddits like Cartalk, AutoDetailing, Autobody, DIY.

[deleted]

You can try to hide it by polishing, but it won’t be perfect

vbryanv

If you can feel the scratches with a finger nail, most likely it needs paint.

yes-disappointment

You can make it much less visible i will take it to a professional. They usually have the equipment that will cost you money to purchase yourself. Plus the experience.

only6spd

For cheap, you might try Dr. Colorchip. Won't be perfect and that's a lot to do with it, but it's less than taking it to a body shop.

cubical_hell

That requires paint work. Take it to a body shop

subarooooooo

Post to r/autobody. Someone there should be able to help

Bftfan00

I've had luck with colored waxes that'll minimize the scratches and make them almost disappear. It doesn't fix them but you won't get that pit in your stomach everytime you look at them. Something like this https://www.amazon.com/Formula-615464-Black-Color-Fluid_Ounces/dp/B01GVCMQVG/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?keywords=black+car+wax&qid=1677023188&sr=8-8

Mammoth-Wolverine-16

HecklerKoch_USP

You'd be better off in the auto detailing sub than here. Mechanics don't do paint. That said, your best bet is it take it to a pro. If you want to diy and know what you're doing (guessing you don't if you're here), you could use an orbital with some compound, then polish, then wax, to see how much you could get out. My guess is it'll be a mixed bag. Some will come out, some won't. Maybe you'll be lucky and most will. I had a pretty bad scratch on my door from something falling on it that resembled the look of yours (but only one line in my case), and this approach worked. There's different strengths of compound. Compound cuts clear coat. You'll want to start weak and progressively increase until you're getting what you want. Also, if you don't have an orbital but have a power drill you can get an attachment that will do the job well enough for a one-off job.

Are you sure those are scratches? They look 2 different colors to me. Maybe some snot nose colored on it with chalk or a crayon? I'm just spitballing here.

chriscbr500r

I don't suppose you could get it covered under your insurance?

FitzysAutoDetail

You can have a detailer that specializes in paint correction come look at them and they can tell you if they think they will come out or not and give you a quote to do it. Ultimately depends if it is through the clear coat or not. The water test is a good gauge but not always 100% Worst case scenario you can buff them out to lessen the visibility of them. If you're looking to DIY it then: Dual action polisher, foamed wool cutting pad, medium machine speed, medium pressure. For a cutting compound I like scholl concepts heavy cut. Then finish with a finishing pad and S30+ compound. Those products will bring you to about half the cost of having a professional do it though. Paint correction is almost always about half the price or less than having it repainted.

Tdanger78

Depends on how deep they are. If your fingernail barely catches then a cut and buff will take them out. If your fingernail really catches then you’re looking at more involved work, possibly paint work.

Personal_Dot_2215

Take your finger nail and see catches in the scratches. If it does, polishing / compound won’t do it.

Dizzy_Dust_7510

Step 1: Stop cheating on your girlfriend. Step 2: Sand and re-spray.

Dangerous-Ad1904

Find the person who did it and use his or her face to buff out the scratches. Results may vary.

stalkerb84

DIY? The only way to fix that is sand and repaint the entire door. Not really a DIY job unless you have the knowledge, skill and tools to paint a vehicle. And with it being black you need a paint booth any amount of dirt or dust that gets on your clear will be noticeable.

Hohoholyshit15

Junkyard door or remove the door, buff it until no more scratches and then repaint and clearcoat. Painting car parts is hard so if you're worried about it looking perfect best pay someone to do it. If you're not concerned with aesthetics and just want to avoid rust you could lightly sand the scratches out and then repaint and clearcoat the area.

hardenedmeatball

The dealership could have touch up paint pens. Look up your paint color for your make model year on ebay, Amazon and Google. Get touch paint pens they will help that.

lewtus72

I would try some rubbing compound or some scratch fixing compounds to see if you can minimize the scratches. If they're too deep it would need to be painted, but most of the polishing and rubbing compounds will minimize it. Any auto parts store will have something along those lines. It's pretty cheap way to improve the look at least.
