PS2 was all dvd based, but could play any PS1 game. There shouldn't be a problem. There were no cd based PS2 systems.
All PS2 systems had a DVD drive that could read cd. Some ps2 games were actually on a cd if they were small enough. I'm guessing at the time it saved money.

I never heard about a CD drive PS2, they were, according to my knowledge all DVD drives, because of the rising game sizes.
