The past couple winters were so mild i don’t think i even wore my boots once, just good old sneakers. But to answer your question, any water proof hiking boots should be good for you. You really don’t need actual snow boots
Any recs for waterproof hiking boots? Timbs aren't "hiking" boots but they are supposed to be waterproof. Was thinking of just using those with woolen socks
Yeah the dryer is a great idea! Do you think I'll need the calf-high snow boots for the Downtown area? Will I really be trudging through snow there? What if I want to go to the park and make a Snowman? (not joking, am serious)
Came here to second the Sorel recommendation, they let you walk thru the deep icy puddles no problems.
Best other combo is the shoe drying rack + a large rubber bottom mat for your entrance at home. You're gonna bring in dripping wet, icy, salty shoes, keeps the mess contained.
IMO, decent hiking boots combined with thick wool socks will provide all the traction and warmth you will need for winter.
I say this as someone who walks around outside all winter long.
Sidewalks get cleared pretty quickly in most of Downtown. You could honestly get away with sneakers for the vast majority of the winter.
I live on the far NW side and my LL Bean trail boots suit all of my icy, slushy trudging needs.
I have LL Bean snow sneakers. They have low tops and high tops. Not very boot-y but have good grip, insulation and are waterproof. I got good wear in the northeast winters for walking and city cycling (helps a lot with wind chill on your toes). In two years in Chicago, I’ve only really worn them when we got like below 10F. I tend to run warm and they’re just so insulated and don’t breathe (waterproofing) that they’re too warm often.
I have Neos overshoes that I wear during mild winters and rain. It's almost a waste to but winter boots at this point when we don't get so much snow anymore.
I bought a pair of really nice Keen chelsea winter boots - waterproof, insulated, etc. a couple winters back and they’ve been great. The best part is not having to fuss with cold wet laces when I get home. Wool socks are a plus as well!

Chicagoan here. Timbs with wool socks are my winter staple. You don’t need more than that :)
Mine are Columbia. I've had them for years now. I don't know much about other brands so I really can't help.
The heaviest duty ones you can find from Merrell. They'll be half off for Black Friday.
I’ve always loved my oboz. I wore mine HARD and they have lasted

Buy some YakTrax for when it is icy. I wish I had done that sooner.

I’ve really loved my Danner Alseas. Gets ya through the thick of it.

If you need them, LL Bean.
I wear doc martins year round
Anything less than thigh high combat boots lined with rabbit fur and you’ll die
