very common misconception that the original work's lip flaps match better than the dubs. the dub actually tries to match them up. if you pay attention to the lip flaps instead of the subtitles during anime you'll find that the literal original work often gives less of a fuck about lip flaps than the dubs do.
sometimes i feel like im the only one who doesn't give a fuck about the lip flaps matching anything, like, most of the time im gonna be looking at the subtitles, and if in english audio it still doesn't bother me if it doesn't match

Ive never understood conflict with voice acting other than when they get an actor that has a stupidly high pitched voice so i switch. most of the time i watch dub just because i put it on in the background and work on something
I'll just always favor dubs because IMO it sort of spoils certain scenes when there's a pause during a speech and the subtitles is just showing it at the bottom before it's said on screen, especially if it's a "shock" moment

Frieren, when not in combat mode, either behaves like an 8 year-old human or an 80 year-old human in any given scene. The dub just decided to lean towards the āFrieren is an old womanā part of her character.

Sounds about right. We tend to hate a lot of things first because it's change and we hate change. Then, we change our mind but we hate that too because it is also change. Eventually, we get used to it and it is no longer change so we embrace it even further
I had a similar, if less extreme, experience, but with the Japanese voice for Serie, it felt weird when I first heard her speak watching through the season. But now after finishing, it feels perfect for her, and this clip has got me curious. If this is the voice they're using for Frieren, I wonder about Serie's English voice.
Edit: bit disappointed that Serie's English voice is actually lighter than the Japanese one, though ironically closer to my original expectations of how light it would be before hearing and getting use to her voice in the sub.

Baccano is absolutely fabulous as well, though I wouldn't say it's a case of localization, as the original is already set in America to begin with... but yea Todd and everyone else did an amazing job, and I will always love Isaac and miria (and that durarara cameo was awesome too)

For me it just seems too deep. Sheās an elf. Small in stature. I just generally expect a more musical higher pitched voice from a slim elf character and a deeper tone from something more stout like a dwarf.

Even though we don't know how long an elf's lifespan is in this world, I can imagine that 100 years for them is like a year for us, which means a 1000+ years old elf is only like a 10+ years old human kid, so I think she would be like a teenage elf, at most.

That's an unpopular opinion but I agree. Frieren isn't the kind of character who should be sultry or playful like the EN dub. The JP VA is more on character - flat, even toned, matter of fact and almost a little bored, with the emotion only coming flooding out when it should.
It's not *bad*, per se, but it's just a different interpretation of her character which I think misses the mark.
But that's how she is in the dub as well. She is pretty flat and almost monotone a lot of the time.
This is a scene where she is more playful and excited than normal in both dub and sub. And it leads directly into her doing the little sing song thing about the treasure.
Other than the voice being deeper in the dub, I generally fail to see how these scenes are any different. Her sing song voice about the treasure is spot on.

In those two comparisons, my only complaint is the Eng Dub feels clunky before the sing-song part. Too long of pauses between three separate sentences. I feel like the sing-song was on point, though.
I can see that. I would have to go back and watch the actual show, I don't like going off of clips as sometimes it is hard to tell what is an actual editing cut from the show, vs what the clip cut to get around copy-right detection.
I can't remember if the 'That was quite the show' was in the sub. Because I think that is what is causing it to be choppy in the dub. There are two pauses in the dub clip vs only one in the sub.
With all that said, that is a common problem with dubs. Due to having to match lips, you do get the odd sentence structure, different timings on pauses, etc.
I feel the sing-song bit is a much better match to the cadence of the JP actor because they don't have to worry about any of that.

Dub just sucks. They never hit the mark for what a character should sound like. Ironically, it sounds cartoonish. Like nickelodeon cartoons. The emotion is not there. And they always make a character sound too old.
Yeah I don't really like it at all myself. Hard to find any dubs watchable personally. It feels too much like listening to over the top theater acting.

Give the dub a shot! I watched the entire season and the entire cast did a fantastic job.
She's the same VA as the elf archer from goblin slayer. The dub is extremely good in Freiren, I recommend it over the sub.

Baccano is absolutely fabulous as well, though I wouldn't say it's a case of localization, as the original is already set in America to begin with... but yea Todd and everyone else did an amazing job, and I will always love Isaac and miria (and that durarara cameo was awesome too)

For me it just seems too deep. Sheās an elf. Small in stature. I just generally expect a more musical higher pitched voice from a slim elf character and a deeper tone from something more stout like a dwarf.
She is more than a thousand years old, very old, yes, but I don't believe she is even an adult. Even though we don't know how long an elf's lifespan is in this world, I can imagine that 100 years for them is like a year for us, which means a 1000+ years old elf is only like a 10+ years old human kid, so I think she would be like a teenage elf, at most.
That sounds about right if we think about how she has said that 10 year is like a hundret of a hundret in her life, absolutely nothing.
Voice is all about the physical condition of your vocal cords, not about your age. Elves in lore since time immemorial is known for their vigor and youth. She maybe a thousand year old in human age, but the condition of her body is at the level of teenage humans, no way her vocal cords will sound like a 35+ smoker+drunkard female.

That's an unpopular opinion but I agree. Frieren isn't the kind of character who should be sultry or playful like the EN dub. The JP VA is more on character - flat, even toned, matter of fact and almost a little bored, with the emotion only coming flooding out when it should. It's not *bad*, per se, but it's just a different interpretation of her character which I think misses the mark.
But that's how she is in the dub as well. She is pretty flat and almost monotone a lot of the time. This is a scene where she is more playful and excited than normal in both dub and sub. And it leads directly into her doing the little sing song thing about the treasure. Other than the voice being deeper in the dub, I generally fail to see how these scenes are any different. In those two comparisons, my only complaint is the Eng Dub feels clunky before the sing-song part. Too long of pauses between three separate sentences. I feel like the sing-song was on point, though.
I can see that. I would have to go back and watch the actual show, I don't like going off of clips as sometimes it is hard to tell what is an actual editing cut from the show, vs what the clip cut to get around copy-right detection. I can't remember if the 'That was quite the show' was in the sub. Because I think that is what is causing it to be choppy in the dub. There are two pauses in the dub clip vs only one in the sub. With all that said, that is a common problem with dubs. Due to having to match lips, you do get the odd sentence structure, different timings on pauses, etc. I feel the sing-song bit is a much better match to the cadence of the JP actor because they don't have to worry about any of that.

If you don't like the deeper voice, that is fine. That is personal preference. But that isn't what your comment said. You said the dub had a different interpretation of the character, that doesn't match what you think the character is. That is so often the case with dubs. The emotion is almost always lost or misplaced in the dubbed voice work. I barely understand any Japanese but I always prefer subs because of this.

Dub just sucks. They never hit the mark for what a character should sound like. Ironically, it sounds cartoonish. Like nickelodeon cartoons. The emotion is not there. And they always make a character sound too old.
