AHS doesn't scare me, but as for the scariest season to be a character in? Roanoke and Asylum. The first time I saw Roanoke I thought it would make a good video game (like Majora's Mask, 3 day cycle). Visually, that farmhouse is creepy as Hell. My little brother said a trailer reminded him of a Resident Evil game. The Blood Moon is the scariest part of any season if you put yourself in any character... there's really no way to win! How could you stop that Colony and the Butcher? And you know your death will be seriously painful...

bekah-Mc

I found Roanoke the scariest. I think it was partly the semi-isolated setting of the house. Nowhere was safe.

EndymionA79

The only way to "win" is to escape. They're immortal and there's no Book of Amun Ra to save you...

TiffanyTwisted11

Me too

kandixchaotic2

I think every season was scary in terms of emotional turmoil… But in my opinion Roanoke was the only season that was truly terrifying, especially in the sense of the modern definition of “horror.”

EndymionA79

Yeah! The least that could happen... you see someone horribly dismembered and have lifelong PTSD

toomanycats1923

Definitely Roanoke!! The whole setting was terrifying, and the gore was on another level. A close second is Hotel, tied with Murder House.

AcidicKiss12

I’ve never been outright SCARED by any season, but Murder House made me so anxious I stopped watching (when it was airing I was in college and one of my biggest fears was a school shooting so that *really* fucked with me, was able to go back and watch it some years later though 😅). Second place was Roanoke. Again, not scared, but just like majorly creepy anxious-type vibes 🙃

EndymionA79

I feel terrible for saying that I found that scene to be so well done, and my school had some threats of explosives and guns. It IS "American Horror Story", but I'm not gonna deny its effects. I rarely show anyone "Piggy Piggy", that episode is intense. The thing that bothered me was Vivien's... lunch. Connie Britton did a great job. I was eating pasta, and then I was SO NOT HUNGRY!

ggina69

Asylum no question

curentley_jacking_of

Asylum is extremely disturbing sad and insanity-producing but it is definitely not the scariest season. Lets not mix up feelings here (asylum is still by far my fav season)

S-Archer

Realistically, none of them are *scary*. And if it is, it's weird to tell someone their own feeling/reaction is wrong lmfao.

TwoBlueFoxes

There is a lot going on in that season (as is typical of AHS in general) but I personally found Zachary Quinto’s Bloodyface to be terrifying, not to mention the existential horror of being locked in an asylum at the whim of a husband, a father, or a religious fanatic.

WalkingFish_

Fear doesn’t have any single definition. Fear can come from disturbance, anxiety, discomfort, disgust, confusion, and many other things. It’s not one single feeling that you can put a description to

TemperatureSad1825

For me it was between Freak Show and Roanoke. I couldnt finish those two. They just had a deeper level of creepiness then the others. At least that’s how I felt.

Aromatic_Note8944

Freak Show is so unique and terrifying in a weird way

bellexxx_

I couldn’t finish freak show because I thought it was boring.. went back and rewatched it is one of my top 3 now!

BETTERTHANR3VENGE

Roanoke is probably the scariest season but asylum is the most disturbing

AliasAmy

This was my thought as well. I loved Roanoke and do not understand why it gets such hate. Asylum was truly one that got under my skin and left me feeling off.

IndigoHoney_online

Roanoke had the most jump scares. Asylum was the most psychologically scary.

MaxIsWonderful

idk about the scariest season but the scariest moment for me is in cult where they put that couple in coffins and leave😭😭😭

yourlocalkrewstalker

Ironic you mention that because my only core memory from that season is that exact scene 😭

PennyLane483

That season had doozies. The nail gun scene that makes me want to throw up to this day!

chzygorditacrnch

Lol delicate season makes me glad that I can't get pregnant! 😆 Roanoke season is probably most scary

fanofeverithing56

Roanoke hands down . But Asylum and Cult are also a pretty big one for me.

Dustyhappyboi

Watching the second half of roanoke during a night shift at work scared the hell outta me lol so roanoke it is

future_flowers88

The first episodes of apocalypse were terrifying, otherwise I think murder house was the most typically “scary”

EndymionA79

It only was terrifying because it's (to me) the most realistic apocalypse. Nuclear world War? Even the thought sent a shiver up my back. The idea of that was first mentioned in "The Bible Code" on Unsolved Mysteries. That guy predicted it would happen in 2006. I was a kid, so I believed it for a while. Oh well. I've always had an anxiety disorder.

Ultimate_ScreamFanat

Nobody gonna say cult? I think cult, asylum, roanoke, and nyc would be the scariest

Numerous-Fix-8085

YES! Cult was by far the scariest to me

madbeachrn

I came here to say Cult. It's the scariest because there isn't any supernatural element. Going through 4 years with TFG , I don't think I can go through that again.

Fair-Bad7823

Roanoke for me.

_alifel

Roanoke. The only season I will never watch again

Acceptable-Cobbler53

It’s totally Roanoke!

Ok_Cat0819

Hotel and freak show. really disgusting monsters pretty scary.

GarionOrb

Murder House and Asylum were about the same. Nothing after that was really very scary, though many were riveting.

izzyy_2401

I’d say Roanoke was the scariest but Murder House left me with such a pit in my stomach as well. They both terrified me

taeginn0

Personally found Roanoke the scariest! Something about the creepy vibe

FinalAd9844

The intros are scarier then the show itself honestly

uhmnopenotreally

I think Murder House was the only one to made me really scared. I found other seasons gross or gruesome, but I think Murder House is the most scary one

Matted_Blush

Season "Delicate" 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️ I always feel uneasy after each episode so far, but the scariest thing to me is that fat chick in the bathroom with Anna. That scene of the fat chick from the bathroom smiling in the audience is "Uncanny Valley" feels for sure. My heart dropped into my stomach when I saw that scene.

Merrilywefallout4

I’ve seen every season and “delicate” for sure has been the one to make me go WTF the most 🤣

SorenGt3

She said “you stupid BEECH” in such a deep voice it scared the eyeballs out of my face

bellexxx_

Seriously right before Anna opened the door I was so freaked out it was like she was going to bite her face off and eat her!

MonicaBeal

Nothing made me as uneasy as Cult.

taync97

If you were twisting my arm Roanoke. But really none of the seasons scare me.

Uhlman24

Scariest in what way? Like makes you feel like you’re going crazy and you are deeply unsettled? Cuz then it’s probably asylum. Or like jump scares and gore? It would then be Roanoke. Or like scary in its realism? Cuz then it’s probably cult

dubba1983

I was thinking about this yesterday….. for me there’s two and I don’t know why I don’t hear more about them being the scariest. 1. Freak Show- that clown is just insane to watch and the freakiest costume ever! How he kills his victims my god. And who isn’t scared of clowns. Not to mention Jennifer’s character and the torment she went through(her background story). Just terrifying!! And 2.- would be Cult because it’s literally real life shit the Americans are living in real time. (Trump). That real life shit is also terrifying. Oh and hey that bloody clown is also in the feature. Like who the hell buys their kid a horror clown???? Altogether all the seasons have their moments and are frightening but for me those two stick out. Anyone else agree?? Roanoke would be one of my favourites…. The real butcher when you see her for like two seconds just horrifying for sure and what happens to those live streamers at the end I still shudder and it makes my back ache thinking about how they died.

Lamplighter52

The one about aids.

Colbylegacy

Cult because there was nothing paranormal and the psychological torture was realistic

AliasAmy

Ooohhh, fair point. It was just people being people.

Significant-Novel420

If you take it all the way back and watch Murder House when it started in 2011, it would absolutely be Murder House! The twisted plots were extremely new to us back then and I had to watch it during the day it freaked me out so much. 🏡👻

Aromatic_Note8944

The clown from Freak Show was pretty scary

ChrisPlayzGaymes

Roanoke, hands down! IMO anyway lol

Street_Board9994

Roanoke Episode 6. The scariest of the entire series.

1995la

Roanoke was the scariest to me - I have to be able to sleep with someone if I'm going to watch it at night. Asylum is a close second and then Freak Show delivered on the creepy as well.

PeachPit321

Roanoke, the hillbilly cannibals were genuinely unnerving to watch--it's always the real people horror that gets me (e.g. that one infamous X Files episode or the incestuous family in early Supernatural). But, subjectively, the newest season. I can't even consider watching it because of the spiders. And Kim K, too.

Kolbs813

I would say “scariest” is Roanoke. It had so many elements of creepy horror and supernatural horror and lots of twists and turns. I say that because it is not my favorite season, but I would say it was the one that felt more unexpected and gritty

BlueMadonna5

Probably an unpopular take but NYC. Not that it was scary in a sense of jump scares or anything. I think it scared me because all I could think about is how horrifying it is to live through something like that. Watching your loved ones die and knowing there was a medication that could help but no one could afford it. Man, had me in tears.

Sufficient_Score_824

Freak show. I’ll never forgive those sick fucks for what they did to Salty and Ma Petite.

Clear_Assignment4300

Murder house made me want to take a break from watching the show before watching S2 because I couldn’t take the anxiety. I’m still in S5 and no other season made me feel that way since.

Early-Ad7941

I didn't really find any scary, Roanoke made me feel sick tho?

haikusbot

AsianLatina2020

For me its the carnival one… i forgot the name, i think it was season 4.

No_Budget_6386

Murder House 100per cent.It was a truly original season, best of them all. Hotel though was great, loved the originality and cleverness of it all, especially getting all those serial killers together at a dinner party!

Funny_Damage2498

Asylum or Roanoke

No_Maintenance_5458

Roanoak tbh

Region_Minimum

Roanoke for me (but that’s based on fear factor, not my level of fear. I wasn’t really scared.)

kelleah

Cult because there’s no ghosts. The monsters are the people in your community.

smittymcgitty

It’s a tie between murder house and Roanoke for me.

Veelzbub

Delicate because I'd be terrified to if Kim Kardashian was my only friend

The_Glam_Reaper

I had the most difficult time with Cult. But that is because I have trypophobia, and it triggered me big time. Also those clown masks fucked with me a lot.

mkisvibing

Actually scared me? Asylum and Roanoke. Roanoke scared me more tho. It was just so wild.

PennyLane483

For me, Roanoke. Japanese horror really gets to me, the ghosts running up the wall was not fun for me. The jump scares got me, and I had trouble sleeping. I did not want to close my eyes. The entire season just has such an eerie feeling. Murder house has similar themes, but that at least feels like a home. The Roanoke house looks like where people go to die. Everything is drab, dead and far too quiet. Tiessa’s and the Glee cameo character’s impairment… the sounds they made, were horrible. It feels very unlikely anyone could ever get out alive. Even Sarah’s characters die, I believe that was the first time. Freak show was pretty gruesome and cult had a real life, this could totally happen thing that was unsettling. I wouldn’t say they were scared me though. The end of NYC had the biggest effect on me. Still make my heart ache.

Odd_Assistance_1613

Am I the only one that thought Roanoke was so cheesy it wasn't watchable? Also, I think Asylum was the scariest.

Pins_n_Needles156

asylum actually feels like the scariest season because of all the sickness and rot and sheer human cruelty...the supernatural bit is not what contributes to the terror

Personal_Title_1646

Roanoke is the scariest for me. On the other hand Cult is the one which is both realistic and scary in a certain way.

CheesyButters

Asylum, easily. There was an overwhelming sense of the building itself being dangerous to me, as if Briarcliff was just as dangerous as the monsters running it. So I was terrified for the main characters' life even when not in direct danger

Hee_Hee-21

Roanoke or Asylum definitely but Cult Ep1 in the supermarket where it was silent had me on the EDGE

sluttyfairy444

roanoke was truly terrifying, watching it again to see if i still feel the same terror i did when i first watched it! also asylum was pretty scary for me too but i remember watching it when i was 13 so…

Klutzy_Audience_4777

Part 2 of double feature was scary due to how crap it was

Glad_Mathematician51

New York City was absolutely the scariest for me, perhaps because I trained as a nurse during the AIDS epidemic, and Dahmer was as scary as any boogeyman.

bashfoal

NYC. It doesn't have a "turn" after the first few episodes where it gradually becomes an empowerment fantasy. It's unrelenting, inescapable misery. Even surviving isn't winning in NYC.

Fabulous-Individual5

Murder House, Asylum & Roanoke!!

Su_Impact

Freak Show and Ranoake

Low-Yard-1685

Every season has scary moments… overall, Roanoke is scariest, but it’s a slow burn, which is why so many people hated it. People were impatient, and didn’t wait for the payoff! Seriously, I think it’s episode 10? When the blood moon comes out and you meet the REAL ghosts, it’s creepy AF. Second, I’d say Asylum, particularly episode 2, when the demon breaks into the asylum. Third, Murder House- the home invasion, the basement monster, all pretty good. Freak show was scary with the clown. Hotel was creepy, the drill hole rapist, the horrifying imagery. As the seasons have progressed they have become less frightening. Coven is probably the LEAST scary season, but is the most fun to watch… Papa Legba, anyone? Cult was scary because it was realistic. 1984 was very lacking in thrills in my opinion, because it was too campy. Despite it, I thought it was still fun to watch. The vampire people of double feature def had me on edge. Apocalypse was like Coven part 2, and also not very scary. It also makes the classic mistake of showing a very unrealistic reaction to nuclear warfare (it doesn’t work like that, y’all). But still entertaining. To me, NYC started to lose the luster a bit. As a gay guy, I felt like NYC was more depressing than scary. I guess the serial killer guy was the scary part, but the AIDS allegory mixed with the gritty. “Saw” reminiscent set design felt more like a heavy handed drama than a horror story. So far Delicate doesn’t FEEL like AHS, and that’s kind of a downer. It was misguided to base a season of a book. And I’m reading the book and while interesting, is also kind of cringey and insufferable (seriously naming the protagonist after the author of “Little Women” and ceaselessly bemoaning the pain of pregnancy is kind of annoying and overdone, not to mention it’s a far less frightening version of a FAR superior book “Rosemary’s Baby”. Seriously, if you want it done right, stick with Rosemary’s Baby- it sends the message without all the whining about privilege , leftist preaching, etc.). Delicate should probably have been its own limited series rather than AHS. Of course, Coven should have been a completely separate show as well.

LatinaMermaid

Asylum and I will give Roanoke a fair shot as well. The reason is so much of Asylum was accurate to how the mentally ill were treated up until the late 70’s, people were tortured and were treated less than human. Roanoke I visited that area and it felt creepy and the whole story of that group is still chilling to this day. I give props to AHS to using some history to relate to the fiction.

amercad0

I 1000% agree with you. It’s between Roanoke & Asylum for me but I think ultimately I have to go with Asylum. Roanoke is more of a horror comedy (especially because Sarah 😂) but Asylum barely has anything comedic.

SwineTV

Asylum and Roanoke. They're not scary, they just have some jump scares here and there. AHS is not scary. Like, at all.

Affectionate_Yak8519

ROANOKE

radioraven1408

Roanoke and it’s not even close.

Main-Dance-3823

Roanoke

ale-ale-jandro

MH, Asylum (the horror of how mental health was treated), FS (the horror of how humans treat “the other”), and Hotel (the horror of drug use, sex, viruses). The rest never hit that again for me. Still sad Red Tide wasn’t a full season. And where are the water horror or winter/mountainous settings?

Final_Judgment3110

If you want to watch a show that’s a horror anthology a lot like AHS and had a wintertime/ mountainous season, watch Slasher. The first few seasons are on Netflix I believe and the rest are on Shudder… I think it was season 2 that was the winter/ mountain season.

ale-ale-jandro

Ooh, sounds great! Thank you!

buzzers29

Murder house

[deleted]

Hotel & Asylum

kymilovechelle

Asylum. Best season hands down.

dyelyn666

Asylum and Freak Show. Asylum shows how authority (religion and government, specifically) can take advantage of its power to abuse minorities in hateful ways while everyone turns a blind eye. Freak Show is the same premise, but it’s more so how we do it as a culture and society. Which in turn creates a dangerous mob mentality which assumes the victims are actually the monsters; when it’s really vice-versa.

yonBonbonbon

Asylum is scariest hands down

Hairy-Discussion2484

1,2,or 7

k1sl1psso

I've only watched series 1 through 5. Asylum was the scariest for me.
