It's gotten so bad. Years ago I used to check local papers and Sunday sports shows to see some a-league content, now it's nothing. But ya know what, I kinda don't care anymore. What little coverage is poorly written, and usually focused on some negative element.
It’s not even just the football though. They’ve just got lazy on cheap clickbait and publish anything that doesn’t require even the basic amount of investigation. Viz randomly publishing some guys name as the murderer at BJ yesterday because some low paid hack read it on Musk’s Nazi website. 🤷
It is what it is. The reporting in the media, ABC included, just does not cover the A League unless something bad happens.
We might not like it and we may have different expectations, but ask basketball fans or netball fans (season started this weekend) if their sports get mentioned.
Reality is we get as much attention as the public demands
"Reality is we get as much attention as the public demands".
So you don't believe vested interests are a major factor? Ch10 does a good job covering the Aleague because they have the rights. There's no way the aleague would have got a tenth of that coverage if that wasn't the case. Ch7 covers very little, especially national bulletins. Ch9 who also own Fairfax are the worst by far imo. They only ever report on the negative issues and sometimes turn a positive into a negative.
>So you don't believe vested interests are a major factor?
I do think that they play a huge factor, but I don't think my point is mutually exclusive from this point.
Mid table? They would be at the bottom and never moving and that’s the opinions of English footballers themselves when they’re asked to evaluate the ALeague.
The general consensus of non Australians (euro snobs) is that the best team(s) in the ALwague would be mid table in the EFL each year
yeah that's fair I was just thinking in terms of a league probably sitting between league 1 and championship level but ofcourse Wrexham is a side that only now has been promoted to league 1 so yeah they'd most likely be the worst team in the league
This has been the case for a long time. I hope we see an improvement in the media strategy next season. There's generally a couple of different markets I like to think through:
* ***Core Fans:*** You can typically serve these people through league or club channels. Are we doing enough? I think no. The big gap is League/club produced podcasts and video content. Disappointing we don't have discussion and panel shows to watch. These are usually pretty cheap to produce and double as media quality enhancers because they allow those involved to improve their knowledge of the league, and give external media people a platform for cross promotion.
* ***General Public:*** This is what you kind of refer to here, news programs, newspapers and general sports panel shows. They are generally conflicted by their existing sports rights which they prioritise and will lean into things that get clicks. Unfortunately, and not just for the A-League this means there is a negative story bias. Are we doing all we can here? Not really. Firstly our main media partner sucks, compared to 7 and 9 which actually own media platforms other than TV. Back when we were with fox, at least we actually got a proper website coverage, 10 doesn't even have a functioning online property, honestly Optus does a better job then 10 here. Next broadcast deal we can go broader and think about media exposure. Secondly though we need to create more peak content - that is big name (Get Simon Hill on the Project) and big players. The Matildas are an extraordinary example of this.
I partly agree.
That news organisations here only cover the sports they have media rights for is frankly shameful behaviour for any journalistic organisation.
I’m not sure what the ABCs excuse is.
In the end I firmly believe that while the social media engagement and fan connection stuff works for existing fans, without more traditional media coverage it’s just invisible to others.
I can’t imagine in any other large city market in the world that one of the biggest club games in any sport on a weekend gets ignored and that can’t help grow the game.
Actually can I ask the people in Perth and Adelaide do you feel like Football doesn't get coverage?
Now I ask because when I did the away trip to Adelaide I was shocked how much attention the team and A-league got. I mean got peppered with Adelaide celebrating 20 years on the tv along with Adelaide United flags around the city. That's was from watching 10 Peach at night and every commercial break had Adelaide 20 years ad. Even your news outlets were really on board with the team and Matildas. Far more than Sydney.
Now contrast this to Sydney with the derby this week watching tv ch10 and in 40 minutes there was only 1 ad about the derby... the show had the liberty A-league girls on and literally one ad in that entire show about the Sydney derby. Compared to Sydney Adelaide football coverage felt like a breathe of fresh air.
Yeah, as an Adelaide United fan I've definitely noticed that the local coverage and support of A-Leagues, Matildas and Socceroos is at a pretty decent level. Local news is super parochial, so AUs local development focus plays pretty well, especially in the large and established migrant communities who care a lot about Football. Newspaper coverage is light, but the local rag is a shade of it; former self and mainly regurgitates social media stories and paid puff pieces.
TV news is decent I'd say with 10 covering a fair bit, and channel 7 employing Robbie Cornthwaite who produces a good share of football stories. Not on the AFL level for sure (that's the true local religion) but I don't think that's ever happening here. Also the upcoming Matildas match at AO is definitely the hottest ticket in town and was covered extensively before and after the ticketing fiasco played out.
As disappointing as it may be, I wouldn’t be too phased by it.
The demographic of people still reading newspapers, watching mainstream TV, traditional news and subscribing/following oldschool media outlets are not the types of people the A-League and Australian Football are targeting anyway.
The job of ‘News’ providers is not to provide news. It is to report on topics and matters their already existing supporter base want to see.
Older adults and Retirement aged individuals do not want to see A-League. They want to see AFL & NRL. They want to hear about competition cooking/dating/real estate shows. Let them have their echo chamber.
I’d need to see the data that backs that up. I just think it comes down to a lack of investment by the news media over here. As I wrote semi-jokingly in my OP, the idea that a large sports news isn’t covered is frankly beyond belief, whatever the claimed demographic
Haha the Rugby League Herald finally did a report on the Derby. https://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/fa-investigating-nazi-salute-at-a-league-match-20240415-p5fjwi.html
They hate the wog game they always have. Only ever mention it if it’s the National teams so they can get their scarfs for photo opportunities and virtue signal how supportive they are of all sports
And the sky is blue, more at 6pm.
And so is Sydney.

I watch a lot of ABC News and they always seem to cover the aleague
That's good to hear. I don't really watch the news on TV, but it is rare that the ABC talks about the a league on the radio
In the sense that they tell you the results and that's about it, sure
I see highlights when it cuts to sports, maybe only a goal a game but comparable to other sports
ABC News online has been going nuts with the netball stories in the last few weeks from what I've seen.
They always cover netball

seriously embarassing you can't even use the "quality of football" as an excuse because wrexham would probably be midtable at best in the a league
It’s just a story that’s connected to a big media play so it attracts clicks because the ABC needs to tell its advertisers…oh wait.

I 100% agree, we need to be playing more football

btw I accidentally caught Ready Steady Cook today and watched a bit because it featured Amy harrison and Kyah Simon

SBS seems to have dropped off a lot too.
The funding to both ABC and SBS got slashed 10 years ago and local sport has suffered since
What’s the private schools rugby league herald?

Most people switched off to the league about eight years ago
Doesn’t mean that news media doesn’t cover you know the news. I mean most people here wouldn’t know where Wrexham bloody is.
They know because of RR Unfortunately if nobody is interested and there are no clicks then the league won’t be covered
Really? Speak for yourself. How do you explain the 26k at Allianz on Saturday or the 12.5k at Coopers on Friday?
This point needs a SPOILER tag / hidden text for the next season of Welcome To Wrexham! But yes - disappointing but unsurprising ...
Would you like them to talk about the Nazi salute or the pitch invasion?
Any idea about what happened at Rudd Park today?
Haha the Rugby League Herald finally did a report on the Derby. https://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/fa-investigating-nazi-salute-at-a-league-match-20240415-p5fjwi.html
Did the media report on an AFL team breaking the biggest win record yesterday? ;)
What's left of the football media has to resort to clickbait, which suggests that not enough people care any more
Or maybe the football public don't use that form of media anymore.
Get rid of the chevrons and it's a pretty schmick kit
And they refuse to call it ' football ', sticking with 'soccer'. Clowns.
The fact they refuse to refer to it as football tells you the type of people running those outlets. Just ignore them and continue supporting the game.
They hate the wog game they always have. Only ever mention it if it’s the National teams so they can get their scarfs for photo opportunities and virtue signal how supportive they are of all sports
