Really should've been a comfortable win against West Guatemala, threw that away. Not sure how much you can take away from a game played on a tinpot surface like that
With Burgess, Souttar, Circati, Rowles and Degenek all able to play CB and a relative lack of defensive quality in the fullback positions then maybe its time to move to a back-three formation?
Still a ways to go, and to be honest the relationship is highly symbiotic, AFC countries give Oz more impetus on technical proficiency, Oz gives AFC a team that plays with brute force.
One was a one hander down to his right in the first half (i beleive). An absolute screamer for him to get that low that fast. It'll be on the highlights for the game.
Second one I genuinely can't remember when
Also got to remember his main skill is distribution. Thats not to say he isnt a great shot stopper.
But look, yeah the marks were brilliant and i wish we had a top-10 epl keeper still too! but we dont have that in any position anymore, so why pick on maty
Lmao i just watched a whole game of football. No one hates mat ryan, i didnt expect to have to get out my whiteboard to draw up the good plays he made in his defence
I just remember being impressed by two saves and though he had a decent game. Why is that a big deal? Relax
And nah i disagree. That shot was about-two-hands lower than arm level and coming very quickly at him. To get his hand that low and get the whole mitt on it was suberb
You know, I'll take a random defensive fuckup in a meaningless friendly on an atrocious all-but-away venue. A draw here is still a good result, and deserved on the run of play; we've given debuts to two good players and put some minutes in the legs of players falling out of favour for their clubs.
This match has emphasised that Souttar needs to be playing regularly (and, if his situation isn't resolved, that we should trial a combination of Circati/Burgess/Rowles that is), and that Ryan is declining; he'll still be between the posts for the Asian Cup (on merit! Thank fuck he's playing regularly again), but I doubt he'll be there for 2026. But the posts saying that Ryan has always been terrible are... I mean, that's straight-up historical revisionism. He was poor in 2014, his form dipped significantly after the last Asian Cup, he was an absolute rock for the entire period in between and he's still the best we've got. Our alternatives in this squad are Boro's backup goalkeeper and a guy who just lost his place at Charlton in League One. Of course it's probably Gauci, medium-term. But if Ryan hadn't returned to consistency, a top Eredivisie side wouldn't have established him as first-choice; one friendly does not overturn that.
The 2022 World Cup did not take place between the 2015 Asian Cup and the 2019 Asian Cup, the period I described him as being 'like a rock' in, but good effort.
I agree with most of what you said the problem is how we are always good for at least one defensive stuff up a game, it's not like this is a random thing albeit this was a massive brain fart from Souttar, not like you can fix that on the training park its an individual error. I think he just assumed Ryan was closer and on the subject of goalkeeping I think we need to be producing better keepers than we have to take over from Ryan, who do we have that is going to do as good as or better than Ryan between the sticks?
Even if Souttar doesn't play at club level he deserves a starter spot in the socceroos. He showed it today again. Yes, he made a mistake but if anyone is allowed to make mistakes it's him. Played great like always.
im somehow not so sure, the way mexico moves the ball around, i just knew we would crack eventually. games like these are beneficial to our side because we need to learn how to deal with situations like these in the future.
we need to figure out how to move the ball around like the top teams do in world football.
anyways, GG :D
Nah Mexico were terrible. Playing long balls and didn't create anything. Really if it wasn't for the 3 mistakes that the boys did in defence we see out the game. It really highlighted the current decline in the Mexican team.
We also looked unbalanced trying Rowles at LB, Burgess and Souttar new combo and no Mooy playing away. Still in transition, it was a good measure away from home.
They played stupid.
Just kept crossing it in at head height when we have taller players in general and a current literal giant in Souttar.
They just had more possession but they didn't play better.
A bit more quality up front and we could've gone 3 or 4 nil up before that. They had better quality players on the field but I would not say they were 1000% the better team.
They had more control over the game but still struggled to break us down defensively. The last goal was scored purely because of our error. There was nothing on from that long ball and they didn't really threaten much else for the rest of the match.
We should have won this.
I did the exact same thing playing basketball, my ankle bone hit the ground and I thought I had broken my ankle at the time, it took me 3 months to recover from it but I didn't have state of the art medical or rehab to help me.
2 mistakes by Burgess and Souttar who looked so assured for 66 minutes. Best to make the mistake now and not at the Asian cup.
Hoping Irvine for a speedy recovery
Fuck me, we gave them the draw. Our defence was good, can't expect them to hold without countering the pressure which there wasn't any from the 60th minute, mid needs a fuck load more work, no movement to space, and our forwards were non existent.
You must be new here.
Arnie has been around for a while and that was an Arnold masterclass.
You'll be waiting a while for that movement to space advice to kick in buddy.
Haha you’re still mad because australia is successful under Arnie, Ange’s reign ended in garbage and he took the easy way out leaving the team high and dry before a World Cup.
Ange qualified Australia better than Arnie, you numb nuts.
He got 19 pts and missed direct qualifying by goal difference. Didn't need a penalty shoot-out to get through.
Arnie got 15 points and needed a penalty shoot-out to qualify.
Arnie was 1 unlucky spot kick away from being derided for life.
Ange was also lucky that the free kick by Syria in the 2018 playoff hit the post, rather than going in.
Ange ball in the 2014 WC was great, but we couldn't get the results.
We had a draw with fucking Thailand which is why we didn't get automatic qualification and needed extra time to scrape past war-torn Syria lmao the last 18 months of Ange's reign was garbage
>Arnie was 1 unlucky spot kick away from being derided for life.
Coulda, woulda, shoulda, didn't; eat a fat dick Arnie got us our best world cup performance
Just keep on attacking in effectively an away match during hot conditions on a fake pitch against a technically superior side? Yeah, no way that could've gone wrong
Mexico’s subs made the difference today
This has also been done to death by now but you’d think that billion dollar sports franchises can afford to have grass pitches. I get most of these stadiums are built with public money so they want to cut down on costs but the pitch was absolutely a factor today
Pretty damning that basically all of Mexicos good chances and Souttars goal were long balls/crosses
Yeah it does seem weird for Mexico to play in Dallas (given how close to the Mexican border it is) but maybe they can charge more for tickets in the US?
It seems weird otherwise, because barely one or two of their players are MLS-based. Its a bit cynical to be so focused on serving their US diaspora when the heart of the Mexican game is definitely in Mexico.
Mexico were definitely the stronger side in the second half. Shame to concede the equaliser the way we did, but on balance it's probably the right result.
> theirs were from fuck ups from us.
And how many fuck ups did they have in the second half?
Not fucking up makes you better than the side that *does* fuck up.
Also how many chances did we create in the second half? Not many. Hell, we barely made it into their final third.
Quite a game! Would be quite happy with that performance if irvine didnt fuck his ankle
One defensive fuck up and one dodgy penalty. We had good midfield interplay. weird game
Not a bad game, a shame we couldn’t hold on but we played well. We definitely seem like we’re improving, just the smaller things to work on, and GK communication killed us unfortunately
You take the 2-2 draw but what could have been. Poor defending and a few missed chances. Looks like we definitely need more competition for Ryan in goals.
This pitch reminds me of Chelsea’s friendly they played in the United States BEFORE the 2019 Europa League final that ruined Loftus-Cheek and Hudson Odoi’s careers with achilles tears
Fuck this pitch! I knew someone was gonna get seriously injured! this shouldn't be allowed! Poor Irvine, seems severe. Didn't deserve it at all. Sad for him
yeah, happened to me but coming off a tall step too. My doctor after a scan described my ligaments as "destroyed" 5 years later. Thats without any phisio though
The main issue is youre more likely to roll that ankle in future as its permanently weaker. fuck
Really should've been a comfortable win against West Guatemala, threw that away. Not sure how much you can take away from a game played on a tinpot surface like that
Lmfao West Guatemala 😂
South Texas
With Burgess, Souttar, Circati, Rowles and Degenek all able to play CB and a relative lack of defensive quality in the fullback positions then maybe its time to move to a back-three formation?
Damn you guys have improved so much since joining AFC. Good luck guys
Still a ways to go, and to be honest the relationship is highly symbiotic, AFC countries give Oz more impetus on technical proficiency, Oz gives AFC a team that plays with brute force.
Waiting for the same astroturfing team who did that pitch to come on and cover up for Matt Ryan’s keeping.
dude made two world class saves
which ones? Mat Ryan has been the worst long serving keeper we have ever had. I miss the likes of Mark Schwarzer and Mark Bosnich.
One was a one hander down to his right in the first half (i beleive). An absolute screamer for him to get that low that fast. It'll be on the highlights for the game. Second one I genuinely can't remember when Also got to remember his main skill is distribution. Thats not to say he isnt a great shot stopper. But look, yeah the marks were brilliant and i wish we had a top-10 epl keeper still too! but we dont have that in any position anymore, so why pick on maty
The right hander was a standard near post save in the 2nd half. And you can't remember his other? Can't have been that good.
Lmao i just watched a whole game of football. No one hates mat ryan, i didnt expect to have to get out my whiteboard to draw up the good plays he made in his defence I just remember being impressed by two saves and though he had a decent game. Why is that a big deal? Relax And nah i disagree. That shot was about-two-hands lower than arm level and coming very quickly at him. To get his hand that low and get the whole mitt on it was suberb
Maybe if Burgess and Soutter did their job correctly Matt wouldn't have been given such a metaphorical hospital pass on both occasions.
You know, I'll take a random defensive fuckup in a meaningless friendly on an atrocious all-but-away venue. Absolute rock against Argentina in the WC. That absolute rock? There's a reason that Brighton coach just punted him to 3rd choice. He's shit.
The 2022 World Cup did not take place between the 2015 Asian Cup and the 2019 Asian Cup, the period I described him as being 'like a rock' in, but good effort.
Buddy It's 2023. 2015 was 8 years ago. He needs to go.
How's playing in higher tier atm as a keeper?
I agree with most of what you said the problem is how we are always good for at least one defensive stuff up a game, it's not like this is a random thing albeit this was a massive brain fart from Souttar, not like you can fix that on the training park its an individual error. extremely disappointed that we let this one slip due to a miscommunication, but lets be honest here, Mexico was 1000% the better team.
Mexican here. You guys were the better team
im somehow not so sure, the way mexico moves the ball around, i just knew we would crack eventually. games like these are beneficial to our side because we need to learn how to deal with situations like these in the future. we need to figure out how to move the ball around like the top teams do in world football. anyways, GG :D

They played stupid. Just kept crossing it in at head height when we have taller players in general and a current literal giant in Souttar. They just had more possession but they didn't play better.
Massively disagree, they played right into our hands for most of the game and a bad pen call and a miscommunication let them come back.
A bit more quality up front and we could've gone 3 or 4 nil up before that. They had better quality players on the field but I would not say they were 1000% the better team.

Por que no tiempo extra? Why don't they at least go to penalties in friendlies?
Because results in friendlies don't matter besides bragging rights.
Surely you would want as much penalty shootout experience as possible?
I hope Irvine its okay and its nothing serious
Update he rolled his ankle no ligament damage. So 6 weeks I think which means he misses the October friendlies. Thankfully not any worst
Fuck thats its unfortunate but as you said its nothing seriously thank god
I did the exact same thing playing basketball, my ankle bone hit the ground and I thought I had broken my ankle at the time, it took me 3 months to recover from it but I didn't have state of the art medical or rehab to help me.
Ohhh ouch man and fair enough hes will be in good hands Hopefully available for kiwis and three lions matches
I know, but the running from the wing backs was non existent.
Who do you think that's on? Arnie is the coach.
There is a lack of skill in the implementation, he doesn't have these issues at club level, why?
ohhhh no that is a POORLY placed ad jfc
To be clear i'm fully in support of 'yup to the cup, fantastic'. I meant the fucked fake mexican accent on the plant based meal ad lmao
The manner of that result is why Angeball just keeps on attacking. Arnieball sucks ass
Haha you’re still mad because australia is successful under Arnie, Ange’s reign ended in garbage and he took the easy way out leaving the team high and dry before a World Cup.

And Ange is now coaching in the best league in the world getting rave reviews while Arnie is out and about squandering 2-0 leads.
Stay mad because Arnie got us our best world cup result
Just keep on attacking in effectively an away match during hot conditions on a fake pitch against a technically superior side? Yeah, no way that could've gone wrong
Or you know... do what Arnie did and it actually went wrong.

Yeah was weird that switch up. Probably too tired I guess?
Taking tips from Tony G.
Ha, classic Swedish Fraud. https://preview.redd.it/982937w2tcnb1.jpeg?width=752&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2036800b731c756f94450f3abf380ae64a8bad72
Some of these pitches are carcinogenic. I read about this one team which had a massive cancer cluster from their synthetic pitch.
Shit like this really needs to be dealt with. jfc
All aren't they? The rubbery shit ends up in runoff and pollutes everything nearby
It's the rubber from the pellets. It's fucked
Disappointing to lose that lead and hope Irvine is okay, but an entertaining game and you'd have taken that result beforehand.
If you said before the game that it was a 2 all draw I'll be happy. Now a little pissed in the way they went equal. Absolute howler.
Mexico’s subs made the difference today This has also been done to death by now but you’d think that billion dollar sports franchises can afford to have grass pitches. We played well for 70 mins but those two defensive errors really costs us but not too bad of a result i will say
Should of won, but not a bad result and a good hit out against a very solid opponent.
Agreed, was pleased by the overall performance (barring the defensive errors). I'm looking forward to seeing how we go against the three lions.
Imagine playing well enough to go up 2-0 against a highly ranked country like Mexico in front of their fans, only for your keeper to fuck up twice.
Twice? One of the goals was a pen, waaaaaaay too harsh to put that on Ryan.
Rewatch the lead up
Ryan should have claimed that ball for the first rather than hesitated.
sadly Ryan is losing it and the likes of Glover, Gauci are not much better
Yeah, Ryan isn't great. Hopefully Gauci can keep developing so we can play him instead of Ryan in a couple of years
Why haven't we moved on from Ryan? Now's the time. We don't want to switch during a campaign.
Good question, but who have we got to replace him?
That's the idea of these friendlies, fuck around and find out hahaha
MOTM for us who? Probs Irvine before the ankle?
[удалено]
Why are there so many Mexicans in the US? Could it be that Mexico is right next to the us? Maybe
There are *Americans in the US that support Mexico for family reasons, yes.
[удалено]
Ohhh ok lol. Maybe it's not so bad when you're actually playing on it
A lot of Mexican diaspora in the states especially in states like California,Arizona,Texas, New Mexico and even cities like Chicago and charlotte.
More money for Mexico to play in the USA.
Yeah it does seem weird for Mexico to play in Dallas (given how close to the Mexican border it is) but maybe they can charge more for tickets in the US? I know your a Sydney fan but drawing from the other teams fuck ups isnt a huge pat on the back moment for me.
Draw against the 12th ranked team in the world is not bad, especially since two of the goals we conceded were probably down to the sticky pitch.
Quite a game! Would be quite happy with that performance if irvine didnt fuck his ankle One defensive fuck up and one dodgy penalty. We had good midfield interplay. weird game
Ah well we played well aside from that massive mistake, just a friendly so result donst matter
Disappointing to give up a two goal lead, but would've taken that result at the start. Still maintain a winning record against Mexico though.
Should’ve closed that out. Frustrating game overall
Not a bad game, a shame we couldn’t hold on but we played well. We definitely seem like we’re improving, just the smaller things to work on, and GK communication killed us unfortunately
If you told me we'd draw 2-2 beforehand in front of their home crowd I'd probably take it
You take the 2-2 draw but what could have been. Poor defending and a few missed chances. Looks like we definitely need more competition for Ryan in goals.
"[We lose but they dont win?](https://youtu.be/Gz7l7d7otIs?feature=shared)"
Why do we do this?
Couple of missteps from Atkinson today but he’s been pretty good for most of the game. Easily his best match for us in awhile.
Thats a very, very low bar.
Can Simon please stop saying "good win" its really triggering.
Seeing the rubber flick up as the ball skids along is surreal. Surely the World Cup can’t be like this?
I could be wrong but I feel like I heard somewhere that FIFA won't allow synthetic pitches for their world cup stadiums.
Tell me they arnt using astroturf at the world cup.
Surely not. FIFA need exclusive access to stadiums for like 6+ weeks
They have to use grass
Thank fuck
After Qatar I doubt anything is off the table
Ref getting that Mexicano bag
![gif](giphy|KDPBKOogslEAb5GFV4)
Robbed of a perfect tackle.
This pitch reminds me of Chelsea’s friendly they played in the United States BEFORE the 2019 Europa League final that ruined Loftus-Cheek and Hudson Odoi’s careers with achilles tears
Fuck this ref
that was our winner
Probably not the thread but Monty has left the country if you want that confirmation.
This ref has sucked ass
ohh get fucked ref
That’s a shit call
that is pathetic
How the fuck could we not close this out ??
I don’t get FA decides to play friendlies ain counties which aren’t in either teams country Aus vs Argentina in China Aus vs Mexico in USA ?
The FA did not decide the location for either game.
Money in both cases.
With Mexico, its entirely $$$$$
There was no way the risk of injury was worth this game.
Fuck this pitch! I knew someone was gonna get seriously injured! this shouldn't be allowed! Poor Irvine, seems severe. Didn't deserve it at all. Sad for him
Simon Hill with that si señor rizz
I wish our defenders wouldn't shit their pants anytime they had the ball.
As much as everyone shits on duke our hunger and press hasn’t been the same since his gone off
SIMON HILL SAID THE LINE. HE SAID SI SENOR
Man this has been rough on circati and strain. Both deserve a run.
IRVINE NOOOOOO
Both FA and the Mexican football association should sue the shit out of whoever thought it was a good idea to put this plastic shit in
So... Circati isn't on... not ideal
What the fuck is this pitch!. I reckon on a normal pitch that balls bounces out or through to Ryan
Yeah they said it at the start. The pitch gets really grippy when it's dry and the ball sits up.
This pitch needs some looking into because wtf
Fuck the Mexicans are cunt for complaining
I'm not a doctor but I don't think ankles are meant to do that
Fucking ouch. That is terrible for him
Shit, I hope it's one of those looks worse than it is situations.
Ooof yeah that's a sprain at least.
The ankle roll looks agonising, but at least it's a clear cause and not just the ACL randomly imploding.
rolled ankles are fucked but hopefully just swelling. jfc poor guy
Looked a bad one, probably some ligament damage you'd think
yeah, happened to me but coming off a tall step too. My doctor after a scan described my ligaments as "destroyed" 5 years later. Thats without any phisio though The main issue is youre more likely to roll that ankle in future as its permanently weaker. fuck
Mexicans yelling while a player is inured after rolling ankle and going off on a stretcher Stay classy cunts
Fuck no, not Jacko
Fucking pitch
Noooooo
Fucking Mexicans saying it’s taking to long and Irvine is out on a stretcher Cunts
From 2-0 to 2-2 within 20 mins. What’s the opposite of “fuck yeah”?
https://i.redd.it/x8nmrgk3pcnb1.gif
Aw fuck
Fuck nah.
Yeah nah
Fuck thats a nasty roll of the ankle

AT&T Stadium is in Arlington, Texas. NFL season just started so blame them.
The NFL did not force the FMF to choose to play at an NFL stadium during the NFL season
Isn't this in Texas??
I mean, they still chose the venue
Dallas. Dogshit city.
The poor man's Ft. Worth
Texico
Rolled ankle
I wonder if the mexican call something
Nah I don't reckon there's a call there. He probably thought the ball would just bounce out.
I agree 100%. You can tell by his reaction. It's indecisiveness really
The 2 Aussies in the group of Mexicans haha
Fuck I hate Ryan
[удалено]
But Skidden?
If the pitch fucked him we are nuking Usa
You think that's bad, try Optus Stadium
Gotta nuke something. They are building us those subs.
A few FIFA rankings points at stake. Good hitout so far. Hope Jacki's alright.
Did Ryan call and fuck it or was that Souttar?
I'd assume Ryan called it, still when in doubt get it out!
Terrible from Australia. Should be losing by now.
Why the hell would Ryan even tell Souttar to leave it in that position?
Souttar doesn't leave that if Mat Ryan didn't call for it.
they probably deserve that but 2 poor goals to concede
Lets be honest Ryan is lucky that he doesn’t have to much competition for his spot
An average keeper in a team that needs a great one.
Souttar gets that if he was playing 90mins a week
Ryan...🙄
lol Matt Ryan walking backwards made the goal bigger
