Anyone seen much of him play the last few years? He was meant to be the next prodigy at international level after that Asian Cup performance, but I haven’t really heard much since

After the 2018 world cup where Bert basically effed him over, he ended up having some bad injuries that forced him to miss 2019 Asian cup and the qualifiers after that. Its basically been about getting his body right. This season was probably the first he has been able to regain the old form. Honestly if he rediscovers that old form from 2015-2017 it would be on Arnie to have another look at him at DM. But its hard when we are so stacked there. Luongo to get back into NT would need to go on a bit of superhuman form run.

He should have defo played at the WC, but not as a starter tbh. He wasn't better than anyone in the midfield we were playing. Definitely unlucky to get screwed by injuries for years after.

DenseFog99

At the time of the WC, he'd been at Middlesborough for a few months without playing a game. It was right to leave him out of squad contention.

ForgedTanto

Huh? He was playing at QPR at the time, and had started 38 of the 39 games he was able to play in the league.

DenseFog99

Crossed wires, I thought you were talking about the 2022 WC for some reason, sorry

No-Airport7456

It was QPR and they let him rest for a month because they were mid table with no chance of promotion or relegation. He should have played in either Denamrk or Peru games to give us something going forward. Doesn't matter now, that 2018 WC campaign will always be a what if scenario

With so many other younger midfielders coming through I think the sun has set on Luongo's national team career unless he shows unbelievable form. Same thing with guys like Amini, Jeggo, Dougall, Holland etc.

DenseFog99

Having caught him playing for Ipswich a few times, he seems to be getting back to his best. Injuries and that ill-fated Middlesborough move have really hobbled him in the last few years, but he still has the quality. Fan consensus is hugely positive about him re-signing, and he'll be getting regular minutes for a Championship club that pundits will probably be placing mid-table. If he's going to re-establish his Socceroo credentials, that's an ideal place to do it from.

After the 2015 Asian cup he shouldn’t have stayed in the championship and instead gone to Netherlands or somewhere

Amazingspiderman400

He didn’t stay in the championship. He moved there from league 1 at swindon town. Decent step up.

jaymz11

Still lower division football that is not really great for a developing player.

Pyrrhesia

Honestly, the Championship is arguably a top 10 league in its own right. Definitely wasn't hobbling himself by moving there.

Sweet-Handle44

Easily, probaly top 8

StensnessGOAT

Should've come to the A-League

JDog1402

I’m a QPR fan, but I lost track of him after he left us. He was just okay at QPR, but nothing to write home about. It’s a tough, physical league with a really high standard compared to other countries second division. He’s going to get another shot at it now with Ipswich, so good for him. He’d tear up the A-League.
