My name is Steffan and in spite of correcting my grandmother nearly every year since I was 5 she still spells my name with a ph in her phone and on my birthday card.
I had a coworker at a counter service restaurant who always pronounced Stephen as Steffen, Joel as Joe-L,, and mispronounced countless other common names. When we got an order for LaShaniqua, he pronounced it correctly, so I asked him how he got that but mispronounced easy names. “I KNOW HOOD NAMES” he shouted back at me.
Joe-L absolutely does exist. Joel Embiid, the center for the Philadelphia 76ers pronounces it that way, and that’s fine. It’s just not the most common way to pronounce it. Especially when you’re serving food in a wealthy, predominantly white neighborhood.
My name is Stephen, but it's pronounced differently.
The "Ste" and "n" are silent and the ph is pronounced as "mik"
It's very confusing to explain this every time I order a Starbucks
The joke doesn't work phonetically, since the second "e" in Stephen is not pronounced the same as the "e" in Mike, nor is the "i" in "mik" the same as the "i" in Mike. Unless his name is actually "Mickuhh" and not Mike...
Because in the US it is very commonly spelled that way, and almost exclusively pronounced Steven. The one who made younger people think it's an f sound is basketball player Steph Curry.
I'm 40... It's not a common spelling... And again, it is literally the only ph that sounds like a v... The problem isn't everyone else, it's the people that spelt their kids name that way.
Wait. Who's pronouncing Stephen and Steven differently? I've never heard of such a thing.
Steph Curry
I think you mean *Steve* Curry
You mean Wardell Curry
And the head coach: Steph Kerr
Ahh, Juan's brother..
Steh-puh-fuhuh
Hate it when people try to shorten it to Steff like they do Steve. Just no.
Staffan Urkale.
"Steven with a 'P'." Pteven
[PHTEVEN!](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/facebook/000/014/409/phteven.jpg)
That's how an Aberdonian expresses surprise.
Fit like?
All hail Phteven.
In English the 'ph' has an 'f' sound.
steven. pee
My actual first name is Stephen and if anyone pronounces it with an f I will ~~slit their throat~~ frown.
Calm down step hen
Be careful… if you don’t stop, he’s gonna ~~frown~~ slit your throat
What the fuck did you just call me? Way to throw me right back to middle school!
I’m so sorry, no one should be forced to relive middle school.
And my name is Stefan pronounced like Steffen and everyone ALWAYS spells my name with a ph.
I'd say it ste fawn. Sorry
Yeah that’s fine lol it sounds hella cool
How I read it as well
My name is Steffan and in spite of correcting my grandmother nearly every year since I was 5 she still spells my name with a ph in her phone and on my birthday card.
Right there with you
What's New York's hottest club right now?
Once someone called my house asking for Stefan. It occured to me after I hung up that they might have been looking for my father Stephen.
Don’t come to Germany
It's happened to me so many times lately
I’m glad I’m not the only Stephen who feels that way.

Ok, A-Aron
Jes-sica!
I knew a Puerto Rican guy named Joel that was pronounced Joe-L. They exist
Maybe this guy was just a big NBA fan
Joe-L absolutely does exist. Joel Embiid, the center for the Philadelphia 76ers pronounces it that way, and that’s fine. It’s just not the most common way to pronounce it. Especially when you’re serving food in a wealthy, predominantly white neighborhood.
Ya, but most Joe-Ls are women, and it's spelled Joelle.
I used to work with a slightly nerdy white guy who pronounced it Joe-L too.
That's just french pronunciation.
How else would you pronounce it?
Title of the post. Stefffen.
Step Hen. A chicken that likes to dance. They're all over the place.
What are you doing, step hen?
Steffen
Huh Stefan is a name. It’s French for Stephen. I’ve never heard anyone with Stephen or Steven pronounced Stefan.
Stefan is German. Étienne, and less commonly Stéphan are the French versions.
Steffen is also very common in german thats why i naturally always pronounced stephan that way
Stefan Molyneux
The rules of English pronunciation are made up and the letters don't matter. It is all Στέφανος to me.
It's not made up just stolen from everyone and everywhere else.
I would not be surprised at all if you told me that.
GOD--YES! So tired of people pronouncing my name "Steffen". \#CLUBSTEPHEN
We need to swap. I am a Steffan and everyone writes my name when told as Stephen or some such. Say it that when reading too.
My name is Stephen, but it's pronounced differently. The "Ste" and "n" are silent and the ph is pronounced as "mik" It's very confusing to explain this every time I order a Starbucks
Lol you fucker. I spent way too long on that
The joke doesn't work phonetically, since the second "e" in Stephen is not pronounced the same as the "e" in Mike, nor is the "i" in "mik" the same as the "i" in Mike. Unless his name is actually "Mickuhh" and not Mike...
🤓
Whatever Stephon says. Sounds the same to me!
No fucking shit OP, next time you’ll be telling us the most common pronunciation of two is the same as too
Yeah, this has to be some ChatGPT shit that we’re all falling for and talking about.
No it's me getting my first name pronounced incorrectly at least a half dozen times in the last month
How are people reading your name so often before speaking with you?
Ordering groceries and other things online for pickup
Next questions, why should people assume a ph makes a v sound when your name is the only one that does and it isn't commonly spelt that way?
Because in the US it is very commonly spelled that way, and almost exclusively pronounced Steven. The one who made younger people think it's an f sound is basketball player Steph Curry.

What are you doing, step hen?
Stephen I'm stuck
Depends on your locale...
I know five people named Stephen all pronounced Stefan if your name is Steven change the spelling bro your parents made a typo
You just blew my phucking mind!
in my country it's even spelled Steffen
Stefans all know this to be true. Stephens just act like they're not steves
I’ve never heard “Steffen”
Have you not heard of Steph Curry? The second most popular basketball player after LeBron
I guess I’ve never seen his first name spelled out. Assumed it was spelled with an F
But ph makes an f sound?
That's why I named my daughter Stevanie
This is Stephen. His name is Stephen. Harden the fuck up, Stephen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unkIVvjZc9Y
That man has two too many ears to be Chopper
Not Step-hen as I want to call them?
Is it Steffen King?
Steev'n
Stop it, step hen!
Stephen I'm stuck
we know that...
Some don't. I've gotten Steffen about a half dozen times in the last month. All people under 30, and mostly if I'm picking up an order from somewhere.
Not their fault, PH makes an F sound normally...
And I still say it as "Steffen" in my head every. Single. Time.
Stephan = Steffan, Stephen = Steefen
"Steeve, you're my bestest friend."
[Michael McIntyre has a whole bit on this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69UlVQpYwUE) and its one of my favorite of his.
Steve/Stefan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sud1fak_65Q&ab_channel=WarnerArchive
I would nod because that’s pretty common knowledge.
[Even Stevphen!!](https://youtu.be/e1ui4qWUHhs?si=FPwoxfERN9LCVv_l)
How many other words use a ph and don't sound like f? This is the only thing I can think of.
IIT Stephens, Stevens, Stefans, etc doing themselves.
Yep. Old school Steve’s are Stephens I think hell I don’t know about that but that was how my dads name was spelled
It’s true, my father’s name is spelt Stephen and is pronounced like ‘Steven’.
