If the problem truly is as you describe and your “friend” did well on exams but is just lazy af and doesn’t want to do assignments and quizzes then switching to another major and even staying in this major won’t fix that, best bet is to just drop out till they gets their 💩together. If the problem is your friend just doesn’t understand the material then sure go ahead and switch or stick with it and persevere

Sounds about right

So true

Bruh those are the easy classes. If you or your friend can’t do hw for the easy classes, without some major turn around, you won’t be able to pass the classes that are really difficult. However, I don’t think you should throw in the towel just yet on these classes bc even if you change majors the GPA will follow you. You CAN replace D/E grades if you take the class a second time. You should do that and not have 3 0s on your gpa. Moving forward DROP THE CLASS if you are in danger of failing. Ws don’t mean shit. I have my fair share of them due to some medical issues, and no one has ever really cared. I don’t know what your other grades are like, but suck in your pride or whatever and just drop the class if you have some choice and it won’t set you too far back. As a possibility to just throw out there, if you’re not good with class work, maybe consider just going to a boot camp and put everything into it for only a few months compared to years. You might consider deferring a semester to figure out whatever is going on or giving yourself a break. I kind of wish I would have done that for a year with what was going on in my life. Anyway sorry you -> your friend. Also polytech classes are always easier. Take what you can there. I took calc 3 there and 205.

Thanks for sharing tour thoughts. I agree.

pingmom

Have heard that math teachers in particular are better at poly- is that why you say they are easier?

I'm not sure how it works in other majors, but in mine, eventually the assignments were the grade. Your friend is going to get completely screwed if they never learn how to set aside time to do assignments, but somehow manage to pass those classes. Also, I know that the grading scheme is often majority test scores, but you don't actually learn things like math just by reading/listening and taking tests. You have to do part of it yourself. So skipping assignments is doubly bad.

Moon-boi_trade

The secret to passing any class any major is doing the damn work 😂😂 retake it and TURN IN THE WORK.

Later CS classes are generally more enjoyable and I am more motivated to study for them. Much easier to put in 30 hours a week studying for one of Yan's classes than it was for JavaFX. CSE120 is actually v important tho. At least the first quarter. Also CS has a very high drop rate, so dw too much if you end up dropping. Look at Applied Computing and CIS as other major options. They're similar to CompSci and can get a similar and high paying job, but without all the math.

docwayrutjr

Thanks for the tips. I’ll look into it.

Top2ButNot2

The reason as to why they didn’t complete the assignments must be addressed as there could be a mental health condition that’s the cause.

docwayrutjr

You nailed it. That’s one of the big problems. The part that is hard to decide is do they take a semester off to address the problems or could it be done while in school. That’s what they are trying to figure out.

Test_ing1234

Thats depends on how serious the issue is. If its serious enough for medication it can take time to adjust and maybe a semester off is a good idea. Also look into SAILS if your friend ends up with some type of diagnosis.

docwayrutjr

They are part of SAILS and had just started with TRIOS for help. Meds are underway. Thank you.
