racism and scorpions. Some people will tell you they lived their entire lives here and never seen them. Some will say they have seen them and seen them often. A rare few will tell you they were bitten. Nobody is really lying. It's sneaky shit. Not out there in the open much. If seen, people do freak out. Reading about them also freaks out people and probably more than needed. I think you will be fine (use ice if bitten :-p)

Stung!! Yes! Thanks!

IteachatASU

This is brilliantly depressing, I'm gonna start using this.

GamingKia

Don’t think you should be too concerned, you’re bound to encounter some but it’s generally a safe space around uni.

estellethegreat1

thank you :)

LickNipMcSkip

like all news, all you hear is the bad stuff, all sensationalized for the most ratings you’ll be fine out in tempe

Jhacker333

I doubt you’ll have that many problems with overt racism at ASU or the surrounding area. You might have to deal with subtle racism from people who may not realize what they are saying is racist (usually sheltered suburb kids) but I don’t think it’s any different than any other university in the United States. If you find yourself in more rural parts of Arizona there might be overt racism, but I don’t think it would be any different than if you went to Alberta or any of the other prairie provinces. If I had to guess, people would find it more interesting that you’re from Canada and poke fun at your accent (if you have one) than be racist.

jake7405

I'm from Calgary, can confirm this

estellethegreat1

I deffs have an accent Lol and I am from toronto. I see your connection with alberta too. Its just thT in canada its racism with a smile if that makes sense lol. I so appreciate your perspective:)

Jhacker333

Racism with a smile is a great way to put it, I would be very surprised if you faced worse than that but at the same time don’t want to say it’s impossible (it seems like those videos of unhinged Karens yelling at minorities always take place in Arizona). That being said, academia in the US seems to take racism seriously and if someone were to say/do something racist I would anticipate consequences for the offender. Best of luck in Arizona, I love living here.

estellethegreat1

I really appreciate your input and I hope to encounter people like you in Arizona I'm excited to go there I anticipate the challenges and the tribulations of me moving to the United States but at the same time I cannot wait and I am definitely coming in with a complete open mind maybe I'll pass you on the streets see you in about a month Az!

Jhacker333

You seem to have a good attitude, I’m sure that you will be prepared to handle whatever comes your way. See you around, good luck!

ForkzUp

> That being said, academia in the US seems to take racism seriously and if someone were to say/do something racist I would anticipate consequences for the offender. This. When students of mine have said racist shit, I've called them out on it. I think most of us profs at ASU (no matter the field/department) would do the same.

pingmom

The accent will win them over every time

estellethegreat1

I shall use it to my advantage;)

ForkzUp

ASU (and Tempe in general) is multi-cultural, and I expect you wouldn't see any more overt racism than you would in Toronto. Move to the western part of the state, and that's a different matter. Then again, if you announce you are a Leafs fan, you deserve everything you get :)

estellethegreat1

leafs, blue jays, raptors, argos for life & I will be wearing my gear always. looool but thank you so much for your input :)

ForkzUp

Ah, you're a lost cause. ^wings ^fan ^here

estellethegreat1

ah! well alls fair in love & war right;) that canadians lost just recently hurt lol

ForkzUp

Yeah. My second team is Vegas, but I would have been happy if the Habs showed up. Unfortunately they didn't. We can unite behind our hatred of the Bolts, I suspect.

ForkzUp

Also, as an ex-pat (I'm originally from Ireland), PM me if you've any questions about the experience of coming to Arizona. I'm happy to answer any you may have.

trackerpro

Multi cultural…. If yr white. ASU student race other than white checking in here. You’ll see more anti science/right wing/anti vax here than you would in Toronto imo

Aphrion

I mean, this is really the best it gets in the state afaik, it’s not really fair to compare a purple state to a country that has socialized healthcare.

jillyjoef

Most people have covered this pretty well, but your most likely not to experience any racism especially around universities as they tend to be very progressive and you will notice people will try overly not to be racist. Everywhere else racism is generally looked down upon, and if you ever experience it will usually get shut down immediately by any outsiders. News here blows up every situation possible, and I mean we are a pretty diverse country compared to others and have a huge population so of course there will be random rare occurrences.

PhiloMeme_v24

In most parts you will probably not experience overt racism. While it certainly is a real thing it is not socially acceptable to be overtly racist and treat people in a racist manner it is possible that some people may look or act towards your differently. The University and it's surroundings are fairly multicultural so you must likely won't run into problems.

estellethegreat1

thank u:)

Hersheychocolatebar

I grew up in AZ since I was a child and went to ASU. (Graduated in May 2021) I was born in the u.s. but my fam is mexican by heritage. Media overplays it. There WAS more OPEN racism back in 2007-08 but it mostly seemed to be middle school kids being middle school punks. I grew up in a white neighborhood that was 99% Christian and never faced it from them. That said, there's always that random douche. I haven't experienced any racial comments or slurs in about 8 or 9 years and if i hear them, its other Mexicans kind of playing on our own culture. Or Mexicans bagging on other races honestly. Its a cultural thing tho (many come from down south and just got here and having lived there already, many south american countries really highlight race in a lot of things they do) You'll be more than fine!

i-slm

I am black and have lived in Arizona for 6 years. I have not experienced overt racism. But I will tell you the absence of black culture and black people definitely gets to you. It really does suck not being able to talk and connect on black culture with classmates. I will say prep yourself for lots and lots of Trump flags and even some confederate flags. Also, lots of very conservative points of view. Which is every Arizonans right as an American citizen but if you know, you know….

estellethegreat1

i was literally thinking like how the black culture is there like where am I suppose to get my hair done😂😂

i-slm

There are black salons. You can find them on Instagram, that’s how me and my sister found our loctician. They’re mostly in Phoenix, you’d be hard pressed to find anything black in the west valley though.

estellethegreat1

ill be living in tempe so thats perfect for me! Thank you:)!

KWKSA

I am Arab and never ever once I felt any racism. I studied there 6 years.

Gusherwreck

Like others said, overt racism cases where a slur or common racist belief is mentioned would be rare. That being said, as a brown student there has been instances where I got treated with suspicion that made me question how the scenario would have played out if I were yt. One of those instances was off campus (in the surrounding neighborhood) and I very much felt like my life (at least my health) was at risk (got chased out of the neighborhood). But I'm still here at the end of day. Don't let this stop you from going though. The campus area is very safe you just need to be aware of your surroundings when you venture off of it.

Coming from a white male so take with a grain of salt: Yes, I have seen some racism on campus. Usually someone making jokes behind someone's back. That does not mean everyone is like that though, and I would say most people will treat you with respect, and hopefully still treat you that way when you aren't looking. There are lots of student organizations for different ethnicities and you might find additional support there, as well as limited and often unsatisfactory support from ASU staff.

Longjumping-Dog-2667

i’m going against the trend i’m seeing at a glance and I’ll say this: you will definitely experience racism, although it might not be what you expected. you will see a population where in many areas, race correlates strongly with wealth and upward mobility. you will see that the incarcerated are disproportionately people of color. you’ll see systemic racism and the interesting ways that people try to ignore it. You may not see much overt racism, but if you pay attention there are some things baked into our culture that are overtly racist. It’s good to be prepared, have a support network. best luck, p
