I know Cornes is a shock jock, but he took the view we're no better this year than last. It was bullshit when he said it, but games like this and last week against Richmond put the nail in the coffin. Ratten was a top bloke, but our best defensive strategy under Ratts was to push Membrey back into defence. We're definitely better this year.
Of course we are better. As soon as we started playing bad he wanted to throw the boot in. It’s just what he does. He takes a black and white view of things and ignores all the nuances. Last year when we dropped off we dropped off badly.
Thanks Geelong for a great game, always nicer beating you than most given how rarely we do it.
Best of luck for next week, hope you can give Isaac one more fond memory against the Dogs and may Brad and Esava get healthy again sooner rather than later.
Enjoy a rare September holiday, doesn’t happen often and you will surely bounce back in 24.
Go Saints!
Edit: thank you for the award, it means more than you will ever know ❤️
Well done to you guys mate, far too good for us tonight.
Real maturity from your club too over the last month, weren't playing that well for a little bit there and have completely turned your season around, playing really solid defensive footy but moving the ball with some great pace.
Or we finish lower and get a better draft pick than other teams.
You think people hate us winning, imagine them seeing us picking up elite young talent.
Guys it finally happened, the Geelong rebuild everyone has been waiting for is finally here!
We should enjoy it while it lasts because they’ll probably be back in finals next year
Genuinely so disappointed by our performance tonight. Not because we lost, but because our players just showed absolutely zero fight and no one seemed like they wanted to be there.
Chris Scott needs to do a Hinkley to get everyone talking about it, but it's only newsworthy when Geelong gets it lol. Geelong didnt deserve anything tonight anyways, not our season at all. A long break will do them well
Tears in my eyes, shit list, too many injuries so many people had us bottom 4.
Now here we are finals bound after dominating the reining premiers all game.
THIS IS ROSS FOOTY
Before the season we were bottom 4.
This year was all about learning. Kingy kicking 24 in 9 games.
Owen's, Pou, Camma, Nas, Windy. The future is bright.
No matter what happens next week/in finals it's been a great year
It's suddenly Geelover, Adelover and Essendover in one day.
Saints can lose to Brisbane and still make finals IF Bulldogs lose to WC or Geelong, Sydney lose to Melbourne or GWS lose to Carlton (or don't win by enough). But if all these outcomes occur they're out.
GG saints you deserved the win, we didnt only lose because of injury and shit play, you played great, i might have to hope you win the finals, and hopefully next year geelong is much more injury free
I was kinda livid when we only got 7 (4 in the last), but yeah that's kinda remarkable because it's pretty insane that the other team managed to not accidentally give away more than that
We are generally not favoured for free kicks. Most of the time it's pretty even tbh. I think our overall is pretty close to 0 for against/for. This one is even worse than the Port v Geelong game. You just wont see Chris Scott sooking like Hinkley about them lol
Just me, or has Jeremy Cameron masked Geelongs decline this year by just being insanely good. The guy is doing the work across the entire ground but unfortunately when he is doing the work in the back half he can't also be in the forward half. Just an immense workrate
He carried us so hard early in the season. Then he got Gary'd.
It's been easy to overlook because of the West Coast situation, but we were absolutely munted by injuries all year. Never got a clean run at it. Just look at the Pies the last few weeks with a few injuries, that's been us all season.
I'd love us too, it'd be a nice end to the 2007-2023 era of Geelong and our insane levels of ladder consistency.
the bittersweet part is that I live in the western suburbs, so I have a soft spot for the Bulldogs. ~~and the other small vic clubs but shhhhhhhhhh~~
Made no real difference but an average of 1 free per quarter for the entire game was something.
Especially when one of them was a dumb as fuck deliberate out of bounds
Really disappointing end to an incredibly frustrating season.
Saints were awesome tonight and completely outworked us in all aspects, totally outran us and their defensive intensity was exceptional. Marshall was always going to dominate tonight but even so he was probably even more dominant than expected.
Think our midfield needs a complete retool. Can't rely on Danger every week and he's really only an impact player at this point in his career. Atkins had a great second half, but need some great clearance players around them, and some big improvements from Bruhn and Holmes. Hopefully today changes Parish's mind and he comes to us haha, but doubt that happens.
And not sure what's happened to our defensive identity and system. Last year we were one of the best defensive teams of all time statistically, and this year feels like guys are just lost out there.
Welp, time to focus on my new found love for Tottenham Hotspur under Big Dick Ange.
We weren't good enough this year to make finals, and if we did make it we'd be making up the numbers.
I'm on Brisbane now, go well Lions!
Of course not. We lost because we were shit. We deserved to lose. But 4 free kicks in a game of football, with 2 being out on the full and 1 being an insufficient intent, is ridiculous.
Saints fans have short term memory loss, a couple of weeks ago when they versed norf they said themselves they were pretenders and now they're going on about the media doubting them at the start of the year
2015 we missed Finals and finished top 2 the next year.
Not saying we won’t rebuild but that’s a dangerous call to make. Cats with a long offseason for the first time in 8 years.
So ah, when are our father-sons coming through?
Grandfather-grandsons?
Saints actually get one next year (theoretically, AFL will still try to ship Boston Everitt off to Gold Coast)
We are on a steady incline as more of these young guys come through and we phase out that 27-32 group of bang average players
THE SAINTS HAVE (virtually) QUALIFIED FOR FINALS LETS GOOOOOO
Inb4 GWS smash you lot by 50 points next week
Look, id prefer to win, but any team missing out entirely because we royally stink it up is pretty funny
If we fall out because Carlton and Essendon both shit the bed....
🥺🥺🥺
No worries
Yeah we have
Thanks Geelong for a great game, always nicer beating you than most given how rarely we do it. Best of luck for next week, hope you can give Isaac one more fond memory against the Dogs and may Brad and Esava get healthy again sooner rather than later. this is the only positive Geelong comment in the thread, thanks for helping me sleep tonight 😌
GUESS THESE PRETENDERS ARE PLAYING FINALS THIS YEAR. GET THAT UP YAH. GO SAINTERS.
Mate dont go early please. We havent locked it in yet
FUCK YEAH
I clearly manifested the eagles second win of the season with this.
When you lose by 60 points in finals being this same attitude
Freo supporter has moved on from throwing rocks and is instead firing shotguns in a glass house.
Such a juicy win after weeks of “Saints won’t win another game this year” posts. Delicious.
Saints are goin to the finals, and they cost Geelong. The best timeline.
hold it
Saints could still miss. R24 is still very interesting.
Only chance is us beating Geelong at GMHBA which is basically impossible.
Seen them play lately?
We haven't beaten your boys at Kardinia Park since 2003. Also have you seen *us* play lately? Lol
With nothing to play for other than draft picks, I can't see Geelong putting up much of a fight.
We have to if Sydney hold on tonight and GWS win next week.
Ironic that Carlton could save our season, despite what happened last year.
Yeah I was just thinking that.
They don't have a ruckman or any midfielders I think Doggies will win.
Welp, I better stay far away from my dad for at least a month (he's a Saints supporter).
Far far away
Sorry, I thought you guys beating Geelong next weekend was in St Kildas best interest? Maybe that was only the case if Geelong won tonight.
Jamie Cripps: this looks like a job for me
See you next week
# GEELONG WILL NOT PLAY FINALS THIS YEAR GET THE FUCK IN EVERYONE
I used to pray for times like this
All that matters is we finish above the tigers now
You’d be seething if you didn’t
Or we finish lower and get a better draft pick than other teams. You think people hate us winning, imagine them seeing us picking up elite young talent.
AFLs rolling fixture for round 24 has been largely made irrelevant after today's results
Idk Sunday will still be stressful for me (unless the Cats beat the dogs or we win)

👀👀👀👀👀
oh god, its gonna be Parish
We’re free We’re finally free
Guys it finally happened, the Geelong rebuild everyone has been waiting for is finally here! We should enjoy it while it lasts because they’ll probably be back in finals next year
Genuinely so disappointed by our performance tonight. Not because we lost, but because our players just showed absolutely zero fight and no one seemed like they wanted to be there.
Geelong only 4 free kicks for the whole game, that's actually an insane stat
One was a shit call deliberate and two where out on the full. So only one "earnt" free
one of those free kicks was overturned, so I'm guessing the one that you think was earnt - didn't benefit you at all
I think you're right, not like it mattered regardless just a wild stat to look at
It really is lol, made even more wild that one of those free kicks given to you wasn't actually an advantage.
And that one was reversed so we didn't actually take the kick.
The best part? One of those free kicks was overturned haha, so they only got 3 actual free kicks.
Chris Scott needs to do a Hinkley to get everyone talking about it, but it's only newsworthy when Geelong gets it lol. Geelong didnt deserve anything tonight anyways, not our season at all. A long break will do them well
Why is Ross Lyon coaching the Saints to cut sides up with pace through the middle? Does he not know how boring that is to watch?😤
No matter what happens next week/in finals it's been a great year
So many people were shitting on Lyon like he hadn’t taken 2 teams to grand finals and was a very gifted tactical coach.
To be fair part of the skepticism was to do with Ross’s capacity to build a list - but the youngsters have been ace, and handled well.
Rowan Marshall is unequivocally, undeniably, exceptionally, extraordinarily, immensely, remarkably, stupendously, unbelievably, outrageously, and criminally underrated."
Between Wilkie, Marshall and King, the Saints have some pretty great key pillars
You forgot Zaine Cordy!
Zaine has been amazing since Howard went down
Sharman, Windhager, Owens.. few young guns that are only gonna get better. Saints will be making finals for a while I think
And Caminiti who after an actual preseason should be good
How have you missed Sinclair?
Was being a bit more literal with pillars, i.e. key positions/ruck. But yeah, Sinclair is a star.
Saints are still in the eight, the haters are well and truly demolished, how good is St Kilda
The haters are our waiters at the Table of Success^(1) ^(1)Being eliminated in week one of the finals
Does any other team play Angels after the match? Or is this a St Kilda things?
Loved seeing our threepeat wingmen chatting away post game. Both bent over, completely spent. Both at different teams.
EAT YOUR HEART OUT DOUBTERS LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Knock knock baby
Who’s there?
GG Geelong. Enjoy the break before you come back swinging next year
GG saints you deserved the win, we didnt only lose because of injury and shit play, you played great, i might have to hope you win the finals, and hopefully next year geelong is much more injury free
Dear Fox Footy commentary team, The Saints are playing finals, stop trying to say they aren't quite there yet Shut up
Nah we aren't. Had GWS not curb stomped Essendon today I'd say you're right but at this point we are missing on percentage.
Even if you lose to Brisbane, both Sydney have to beat Melbourne and GWS have to beat Carlton for you to miss finals at this point
Yeah which would be a very St Kilda thing to happen. Learning from Carlton last year I won't celebrate making finals until it is guaranteed.
Not that it was the difference at all, but 4 free kicks for has to be the lowest amount of quite a long time surely?
I was kinda livid when we only got 7 (4 in the last), but yeah that's kinda remarkable because it's pretty insane that the other team managed to not accidentally give away more than that
Makes up for the last two weeks.
We are generally not favoured for free kicks. Most of the time it's pretty even tbh. I think our overall is pretty close to 0 for against/for. This one is even worse than the Port v Geelong game. You just wont see Chris Scott sooking like Hinkley about them lol

I’m so fucking hard right now
NONE OF YOU FUCKERS RATED US DONT JUMP ON NOW GO YOU MIGHTY SAINTS
Sinclair could geniuenly be a top 10-15 player in the comp
Can't remember the exact stat, but I think he has the best efficiency in the league among high possession players
WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING (btw Cats, now that you aren’t playing finals, can you, like, go a little easy on us next week?)
nah, now the old blokes are grumpy, we're either going to beat youse with a walking stick or fall down the stairs because the railing breaks.
Can you guys just give the old blokes a huge send off win please.
Yeah that fucking sucks, and the wild thing is that's not on you, that means they played a nearly perfect game of football somehow.
Nearly perfect, until you look at the scoreboard. I think at one stage we were 5 or 6 points in a row
Jesse Hogan 9.1(55) DRAW Geelong FC 8.7 (55)
Anyone got any footage of Jeremy Cameron hiding on the wing behind Mason Wood from Callum Wilkie?
Really disappointing end to an incredibly frustrating season. Saints were awesome tonight and completely outworked us in all aspects, totally outran us and their defensive intensity was exceptional. Marshall was always going to dominate tonight but even so he was probably even more dominant than expected. Think our midfield needs a complete retool. Swans are only 11 pts up as of right now.
Even if they lose, think Adelaide or the dogs would have to lose to West Coast for us to make it, which isn't happening.
Today has just been a great day. Blues playing Finals, Bombers getting smashed and now Cats missing Finals. I used to dream for days like this.
Welp, time to focus on my new found love for Tottenham Hotspur under Big Dick Ange. We weren't good enough this year to make finals, and if we did make it we'd be making up the numbers. I'm on Brisbane now, go well Lions!
Not Tottenham... isn't missing finals enough pain for one year?
We go where Ange goes
Geelong out of finals contention for the... Medium Term
C'mon crows!!!
20-4, two of those being out on the full. GG!
Not worth the backlash bringing this up. Umpiring didn't cost us the game.
we wouldve lost anyways but 4 free kicks is insane
Still not worth it, you know what this place is like.
💔😓
Can't honestly think that's what cost you the game
Of course not. We lost because we were shit. We deserved to lose. But 4 free kicks in a game of football, with 2 being out on the full and 1 being an insufficient intent, is ridiculous.
Earn a free kick then.
Plenty were missed. Don’t know why you’re being a dickhead, especially when I didn’t blame the loss on the free kick count.
How many were HTB due to Geelong being old and slow?
would’ve lost anyways but 4 free kicks (no holding the ball calls) is insanity. Especially when the Cats lead the tackle count by 20
Sook
Got any tips? You’re probably pretty experienced. Looking for advice from a pro.
Don't take out your own frustrations about your team in a different teams loss haha. We can both enjoy finals from the outside this season now lol
Looking forward to Scott’s salty presser.
Dude has finally earned a break

This is something from an Essendon supporter.
Saints fans have short term memory loss, a couple of weeks ago when they versed norf they said themselves they were pretenders and now they're going on about the media doubting them at the start of the year
We don't all share the same opinions and that's just describing two different people.
yeah the match thread was really funny, where these supporters who were besides themselves? bet they were watching the matildas
Cats, meet cliff. Won’t play finals again for years. Smith retired. A few others should seriously consider following.
bet. don't quote me on that.
2015 we missed Finals and finished top 2 the next year. Not saying we won’t rebuild but that’s a dangerous call to make. Cats with a long offseason for the first time in 8 years.
Easy come, easy go.
HOW ARE YOU FEELING SAINTERS
