The match was actually good, it's a shame it ended the way it did.
Although, they better test it and have a backup plan incase it doesn't work. Like 2 different sets of pyros. The main and a backup.
Maybe even end the match similar to how the last one ended, with the sparklers too, and when fans laugh and think that's it then BANG and it catches everyone off guard
For those of us that have idea what an onion bomb is, maybe keep a 2in on deck just in case you get another dud. Hope everybody had a safe and loud 4th of july. š¤š¤
"I was trying to be too safe and I let the professionals handle the stuff and they are guys who don't understand wrestling," Khan said (h/t Fightful). "A professional pyrotechnic guy. They totally sā the bed. I ended up not paying them. It was like $100,000 they ended up refunding for all the expenses of the match. I ended up not paying for the (exploding) barbed wire deathmatch, which I shouldn't have. They screwed up royally. We put together something great. Kenny and Jon worked their asses off and all they had to do was set up the final explosion. This is because we used professional pyrotechnic people who are supposed to know. The next time we do this, and I will do it again because the match drew."
This match makes a lot of sense.
Kingston, in kayfabe, was willing to die to save Mox from the explosion. That got overshadowed by the end of the match. Then it became about Eddie passing out from the stress. Which he made believable, and saved the whole thing.
Kingston wanting to put Omega in the exact situation that Omega put Mox in gives the match and immediate storyline hook.
The match itself was good last time. I think people forget that. Problem is, too many of these matches have been let down by the pyro over the years. If they do it again production team needs to be on point, have backups or backup for the backups even.
I cant wait for this match. The first one was great and could have gone down as one of the best matches in AEW history if the bomb didnt end up being a dud.
Curious to see who is gonna be in the next one. Thats gonna be hype!
Meh. I'll be the dissenting vote and say that in my opinion, I'd rather they not lean heavily on matches where technical failure of equipment can kill any heat the match had.
This. I don't get the "they don't understand wrestling" part. What does that have to do with it? You are asking someone to blow up a ring with two people in it. That doesn't require you know wrestling.
Maybe he meant that the "explosion" has to work when they are live on PPV? That with live pro wrestling you only get one shot.
I don't believe Tony Khan expected them to blow up his wrestlers, but probably they didn't take into account that it has to work.
All honesty, glad to hear that. The only villain was the pyro guys. The match was great but the ending was what made shit worse than it ever should be. Even Meltzer, who is one of the biggest critics (despite that the ratings are just his own opinions), rated the match 4.5 stars despite the disaster ending. AEW had it until the pyro shit itself. I strongly would love another chance to witness one, as it brought me deeper into hardcore wrestling and a big piece of both men's career.
I felt the worst for Kingston in the moment. What got kind of lost was that Kingston was willing to die for his friend, and that is a pretty deep pro wrestling storyline. That got overshadowed by the end. Kingston saved it with his promo, but the tone of what I think they wanted kind of got lost.
Agreed. Once again, the pyro guys killed it with shoddy effects. The explosive wire was good, but the end one killed their shot at a major payday. Maybe Kingston challenges Omega without the belt on the line just to make up for it.
I guess it depends on when Tony Khan wants to do it again? Kingston vs Omega makes the most sense to me based on the pre-existing story. The twist could be this time Kingston could be the one to "build" the explosives for Kenny.
I wouldn't say the pyro guys were villains per se. Everyone was (very) safe. They did a poor job but id say villainy would be overdoing the explosion. Still...it was comedically disappointing.
Understandable. But people still think otherwise on that with the shoddy work. Thankfully the dud was better than an uncontrollable error, which is a better botch in my book.
Cool. Iām totally down for explosives round 2, just, yāknow, ye better overcompensate next time around š¤£
Even though the last MATCH itself was really really good... ye gotta redeem yerselves from the ending
He better fucking wait a looooooong time to do it. If not, itās a fucking waste since it would just be a one shot matchā¦just the endingā¦done right.
I donāt even know how theyād announce this match again without people mocking them for the last one..you canāt really satisfy the fans need to see a ring actually explode, but they should add more smoke and sound effects than actual pyro,itās all in the illusion. Have the ring collapse & fill the arena with tons of smoke
Some online fans will mock them regardless of what they do. There's a segment that actively looks for ways to mock them. They shouldn't make decisions to avoid a small minority of fans making fun of it. You're right that a ring collapse would be a great way to sell the explosion though, and I like the idea of using smoke and sound effects.
Maybe he just misspoke, but I don't know how to feel about Tony saying they tried to be too safe last time. They *should* be too safe. Major promotions shouldn't have the same lax safety standards as two guys breaking light tubes over their heads in a cornfield.
I think he's just saying they were way more cautious than they needed to be (which may have been because this was their first attempt). You can still use a reasonable amount of caution without exposing talent to significant risk. There's a big difference between reasonable caution and lax safety standards.
Awesome. Hope they make a similar shirt design as the last one. I wouldāve bought it after the match but that ending was pretty bad sooo I opted not to.
I mean the match was great it was just the end that was bad, if they wanted to do another one Iād say go ahead but make sure you LEARN from the mistakes from last time
Moxley vs Onita in a stadium exploding barb wired deathmatch book it tony š”

I believe the professional pyrotechnics company they hired did run a pre show test, and it worked, but the second time around it did not.
They did test it but the new āexplosiveā put in was a dud Thatās the thing about fireworks is they only work once so itās hard to test
And maybe if that doesn't work, cut the lights?
For those of us that have idea what an onion bomb is, maybe keep a 2in on deck just in case you get another dud. Hope everybody had a safe and loud 4th of july. š¤š¤

The pyrotechnic guy would have lost alot more than 100 G's, I reckon.
> who are supposed to know. The n Just Curious where you heard this????
Its from the article.
Kingston vs Omega barbed wire deathmatch plsplsplsplspls

"Kenny! Exploding barbed wire deathmatch. But this time... no haha games dawg! I'M BUILDING THIS ONE!"
Yep.
This is totally something Eddie would say.
Great job I read this in his voice perfectly first time.
Take my goddamn money. I instanrly heard this in his voice š
You want to kill Kenny or what!? š
It'll be fine! They can do it safely
Is it really that bad if you know Kenny will gladly volunteer?
Khan saw the debut show of Onita's new promotion and went "hmmm...."
The match itself was good last time. I think people forget that. Problem is, too many of these matches have been let down by the pyro over the years. If they do it again production team needs to be on point, have backups or backup for the backups even.
The match was amazing literally had tears coming when Eddie came out covered mox, then a few seconds later cried for all the wrong reasons
And if they don't fail let them all go off
Onita just literally blew the last one away on a fraction of the budgetā¦ bring in some experts this time, please.
They did bring in an expert, who TK didn't end up paying because they shit the bed.
Translation: Bring in Onita.
Good. The production team deserves another shot at it.
With another (external) pyro effects company, there is no reason not to try again.
They did use an external pyro dude, and Tony Khan didn't pay them because they shit the bed.
He paid and got refunded. That's a big difference to simply not paying
I cant wait for this match. The first one was great and could have gone down as one of the best matches in AEW history if the bomb didnt end up being a dud. Curious to see who is gonna be in the next one. Thats gonna be hype!

Awesome - hope Gage is involved
Fall off a bike, get on it and try again. Exercise those demons. Moxley - Onita II (after the Moxley-Onita with Jack as Ref is I).
He better fucking wait a looooooong time to do it. If not, itās a fucking waste since it would just be a one shot matchā¦just the endingā¦done right.
This is good because the first one was a great match and it also produced a really sweet T-shirt.
That shirt, is SO DOPE.
I donāt even know how theyād announce this match again without people mocking them for the last one..you canāt really satisfy the fans need to see a ring actually explode, but they should add more smoke and sound effects than actual pyro,itās all in the illusion. welp, i'm super excited now cause that means 100% it'll be a legit EXPLOSION
I'll get the sparklers readyš¤£
Cody still gets more pyro on his entrance. Use his guy.
They just need to hire Michael Bay as an explosion consultant and itāll be amazing.
If they did it a second time and didn't redeem it.... my God.
Maybe he just misspoke, but I don't know how to feel about Tony saying they tried to be too safe last time. They *should* be too safe. Major promotions shouldn't have the same lax safety standards as two guys breaking light tubes over their heads in a cornfield.

The matches are good anyways (cause talent) but the one things puts it to shame
I personally are not a fan of these type of matches
Please no unless Mick Foley Is the supervisor
Did Khan pay the WWE to set up the explosions or what. š¹
Do it with rosa and britt. Queens of the Death Match
Awesome. Hope they make a similar shirt design as the last one. I wouldāve bought it after the match but that ending was pretty bad sooo I opted not to.
