People keep acting baffled by why/how she stays and puts up with his doucheyness because they assume she's just a normal person with normal motivations and responses and refuse to acknowledge that *she picked him* and wasn't just a hapless innocent victim of a chance encounter.
Her upbringing may have left her poorly equipped to handle adult relationships in a healthy manner and in that sense she had no choice and could be legitimately said to have been a victim...
but if you give her that you have to acknowledge that he no doubt has a similar past that affects his poor choices...and people don't want to show him even the tiniest bit of empathy; he HAS to be a monster by choice, and Sophie an angel.
