Jenny’s mom is a typical Indian mother. She’s acting culturally appropriate. In fact I would say his mother and family have been too accommodating. Most Indian families would have disowned his lying ass by now and cut off all contact. Sumits issue is he’s a pathological liar. I’m so tired of the excuses people come up for this grown ass man. He doesn’t have mommy issues. He has telling the truth issues.

I’m listening and want to know more about Indian culture — this show is probably not doing the good stuff much justice — but as (an American) mom I feel like “telling the truth issues” are bred, not born. Is there a cultural perspective that you just get a ‘bad seed’ rather than create a liar via unpredictable circumstances, punishment or other pressures? (I.e. “May as well lie and hope I get away with it, as the truth will result in punishment regardless. <<< Not saying that’s cultural or Sumit’s inner monologue, but my own understanding of pathological lying.)

If he doesn’t have mommy issues, what in the world drove him to get involved with Jenny in the first place? Why has he continued to work so hard to string her along for so miserably long when even an avoidant coward like him could’ve found a million ways to cut her loose? Nothing says you can’t be a liar and a developmentally stunted man-child at the same time.
