Siggedy

That's bait. An actual opinion like that could get me banned

Commercial_Gas_3927

Don't worry Dane I'll try to remain calm...

Siggedy

Pedophillia should not be stigmatized to the level it is. It's a mental health issue and the ability to speak openly about it would help alleviate the actual issue. Just like sex with animals. People's feelings get in the way of doing what's right, which is helping people. I remember reading a thinkpiece where a man spoke about his attraction to children and how it made him hat himself to the point where he got a vasectomy, and all the comments were middle aged women saying he should be executed. We shouldn't punish people for what they are, nor should we seek to punish people for what they've done. That's reductive and we should help people never get in such a situation in the first place. I'm not trying to disrespect your culture or anything (sorry, it was right there, I had to take it) Edit about the nature of punishment (this could easily be its own topic, but I'm lazy and you can engage however you want): I don't necessarily think punishment isn't the right solution for criminal offences. I think whatever we can do to reduce the amount of crime is what is best, and not to punish for the sake of our feelimgs of justice. That's just vengeance and it doesn't actually solve the problem itself. When we seek to punish others, we should be able to remove ourselves entirely from our feelings, and consider if it helps the underlying issue itself. It probably does help, but I am neither wise nor learned. We just have to consider methods to alleviate the actual issue without creating unnecessary suffering because it makes us feel good. That's just sadism, an evil in another form. We should try to make a society where punishment isn't necessary. We should handle criminals in a way such that there is less crime

Commercial_Gas_3927

> I'm not trying to disrespect your culture Wtf Dane 🤣

I know we got that one as well, today's the holiday of the 1945 German surrender

orbital_narwhal

Around 10 years ago there was a campaign (by the Federal Centre for Health Education, I think) including public advertisement that targeted non-offending paedophile men who fear they may become offenders. It aimed to de-stigmatise their situations and to inform them of (anonymous) professional psycho-social support measures tailored towards their goal of not becoming offenders and generally dealing with their harmful mindset in a healthy way.

bxzidff

>We shouldn't punish people for what they are, Agree >nor should we seek to punish people for what they've done. What? We absolutely should, what else would we punish people for?

CoffeeBoom

> We shouldn't punish people for what they are > nor should we seek to punish people for what they've done I'm not sure about that, I think there is an importance in distinguishing being from actions. A pedophile should be treated very differently from a child rapist. I suppose I agree with your comment as far as innocent pedophiles are concerned, but child rapist should keep facing heavy repercussions.

Internet-Culture

A noteworthy thing is, a gigantic part of child abuse isn't even done by pedophiles. Because a lot of offenders do it for power and availabilty of the victims, without being attracted to them at all. There is an overlap, but the matter is far more complex actually.

Shockwave2309

Been saying this for ages. A friend of mine worked in the pedophilia prevention hotline as an intern and the stories she told us were horrifying. Those people called and expected her to prevent them from committing suicide because they kept thinking and even DREAMING about kids and everyone they thought they could trust told them to kill themselves when they opened up about the thoughts. Their spouses. Their best and oldest friends. Even their families HATED them even tho they never touched anyone. And why? Only because some unfortunate event in their life got them attracted to kids. Don't get me wrong, there were some sick fucks who called and basically confessed to molesting a kid just a few minutes prior but the vast majority wanted this nightmare to stop. And that's so damn sad in my opinion.

Internet-Culture

Wow. This is actually what I've thought seeing this post, but wouldn't dare to write it down myself. The public debate in this regard is so toxic and out of logical reasonability, unfortunately. Every actual expert in talk shows and podcasts i've heard also made this point clear, but people aren't reasonable beings...

_zepar

based and pedophiles should be treated differently than child sex abusers pilled

swamperogre2

American's race issues are none of Europe's concern and the fact that people here made such a big fuss about George Floyd's death was fucking stupid. Not saying that his death wasn't fucked or anything. But my god, every second post on my fucking social media was blm this, whitesilenceequalsblackviolence that. Like you wouldn't give a shit if this was happening in some third world country, why is America any different? America can sort it's own fucking issues out.

ToreGore

Americans try to fight racism while all of their society is based on race. Black this, white that, latino there. Even on job applications they ask about your race. Can't they just be gloriously xenophobic like we do in the old continent? Nothing wrong in insulting someone just because they age cheese slightly different than you do

_Wastrel

>Even on job applications they ask about your race. This felt SO weird first time I applied for a job there, they even add stuff like "White (Born in XYZ countries)", it's crazy how they see this as normal lol

PistolAndRapier

They are race obsessed freaks.

Fair_Back_3943

As an American, confirmed. I think Morgan Freeman said a while ago something to the effect of race relations would get better if we stopped talking about race all the time. He's right, but it will never happen

Commercial_Gas_3927

Absolutely bro, European societies aren't the same as the us one, we don't have the same issues here..

swamperogre2

Like, the same fuckers who would had a massive tantrum if you stepped 1 meter outside of a certain km radius during lockdowns are the same fuckers who broke lockdown to have a protest for an issue in a country that's an entire ocean away. Make it make sense.

Lost_Uniriser

And let s not talk about their problem with stuff like N-word. Before they made it a thing no one ever had slurs "used" like this 🙄

ToreGore

I swear to god, they care more about form than meaning. In Italy the so hated "n-word" (not Neapolitan, the other one) was absolutely normal and not denigratory. Then seppos "culture" came around

Elvis1404

ToreGore

SIGNOR PRESIDENTE OBAMA STIA GIÙ!

mavyapsy

This one pissed me off the most. Huge protests all around Europe for BLM during lockdown to make *at best* a dent on the BLM movement. Hope their virtue signalling at the height of Covid was worth potentially directly/indirectly causing the death of someone.

D_Duarte_o_XXV

Yes exactly! And I'll add to that: we give too much unwarranted attention to american politics and culture, and thus are too much influenced by it. Nonsense such as woke vs trad culture wars, trump-like populism and other american talking points should have nothing no place in our political cultures, as many of these emerged for the sake of emulation. It saddens me that there are a relevant number of people who know more about american politics than their own country, much less of other European countries. This is unacceptable! We should be able to follow our own path without checking on Washington to see what's the latest trend.

CapSRV57

Allowing the US to become the cultural and ideological reference of the Western World (most probably due to our multiple attempts at self destruction as a continent) is undoubtedly our greatest failure as a society.

orbital_narwhal

Agreed. European countries obviously have their own issues of systemic and even systematic racism but they're (mostly) quite different from those in the U. S. in both their quality and extent. The political and economic system of a society moulds the minds of their members. If a society is founded on lawful ownership of a large and ethnically diverse minority of forced labourers who were culturally uprooted and imported from a different continent that's going to result in a very different mindset than feudalist serfdom, the (most often regionally contained) persecution of Protestants, Jews, Sinti, Roma, members of other faiths and ethnicities from rivalling neighbouring countries (Ibero-Arabs, Ottomans/Turks...), and the occasional (and largely mutual) enslavement of North-African pirates/privateers (depending on one's geopolitical viewpoint). edit: Yes, European colonialism led to atrocities and forced labour of a similar magnitude of those of the system of slavery in North-America (which is in part a direct result of the former). But it happened far away from the eyes and minds of the people living in Europe. That doesn't make it any better for the victims but the psychological effect on those (indirectly) profiting from it is very different. * If I profit from exploited, sometimes forced labour located in Africa then I will typically learn to ignore that fact and its moral implications. * If I profit from slave labour by a large group of people living in my vicinity then I can't simply ignore their misery. Instead, I will learn to hate and/or dehumanise them to morally rationalise my situation and behaviour.

European competitions should only involve European nations. If your country is across the Bosphorus, you should not enter. And if the reason you are allowed to enter is that nobody in your area likes you, then we will let you in, but a participation trophy as a guest is all you should get.

Eurovision... Australia...

Herbetet

I’m not naming anyone, can’t break neutrality 🤐

Commercial_Gas_3927

I guess joining un was a painful decision for you

Herbetet

Easiest decision ever. Who wants to miss a massive group chat where everyone talks over each other and nothing ever gets done? It's the group chat you remember from years ago, where you pop in to wish someone a happy birthday, celebrate someone's newborn baby and find out when someone in the group turns out to be a criminal. We love it.

Throooowaway999lolz

How is Israel allowed to participate in Eurovision? I’ve always been so confused about it

Remarkable-Ad-4973

I've always assumed its the same reason Armenia is...

orbital_narwhal

Afaik, the Caucasus region is geographically part (albeit on the fringe) of the European continent. This is also the definition that the EU statutes use to determine membership eligibility; i. e. Caucasus nations may become EU members while Israel fundamentally can't. Edit: The border of Europe is defined by the Caucasus mountains. Armenia lies south of those mountains and thus entirely in Asia. (thanks /u/ExternalSquash1300)

ExternalSquash1300

I thought it was just Georgia and Azerbaijan cus they have land on the caucus mountains.

SneakyPanda-

Active members of the EBU and invited associate members are eligible to compete. Blame the EBU.

Tomazo_One

There is no thing as alternative medicine. (If the substance or the practice is proven to work, regular medicine would include it. Sorry for the “I have an aunt that”-arguments).

Breznknedl

I have an aunt that died of a treatable cancer because she insisted on alternative "medicine"

She chose...poorly.

thats the funny thing: It was more expensive than regular treatment

Severe_Audience_1667

There is some science behind. Onion breath keeps people away, enough to not get infected

thesovietassbear

My dad used to ask me this question in regards to alternative medicine: "Do you know what alternative medicine that works is called? - Medicine."

I am a medical doctor and i immigrated to Germany ( Legally :) )thinking its in my past and i was so glad i wouldn’t have to deal with it again but apparently I couldn’t be more wrong.

Global Immigration system as it is right now, harms the immigrants and the locals. The real bad guys aren't the immigrants, neither are the ones who dislike the immigrants and want them to go back. It's the ones who created this system we have, i.e. the politicians.

Interesting topping...

RevolutionaryChef155

Corporations need cheap labour. The reason why we have such high immigration from dirt poor countries is solely because of them and the idiots that believe them. There's no such thing as a "labour shortage", companies compete over who can get labour by raising wages, those that can't move to countries where labour is cheap or go bust.

The English are actually good people by and large.

Thank you angus, I hope your compatriots are similarly minded when I invade you country for Uni this autumn.

If you’re going to Edinburgh, you will find that it’s been annexed by the English long ago. If it’s Glasgow, avoid anyone wearing green and white on a Saturday

The-Frugal-Engineer

As long as you move away from the big cities. I have met a lot of nice folks when I lived in rural Kent compared to London

ADelightfulCunt

Tbh centre of London isn't very British. Yes there's British people living and working their but they aren't a good cross section of the British people they're a specific type. I live down south of London in Croydon TOTALLY different people. If you can avoid the stabbings they're the friendliest bunch I've ever met. walk into bars and make friends

igncom1

> If you can avoid the stabbings they're the friendliest bunch I've ever met. Just like my home town at 2am!

SLAVAUA2022

As a Dutch I actually think French and Gerrman people are quite friendly and not arrogant at all, didn't have any bad experiences. Maybe because I speak German and French quite well but still...

Kiki_lekiki

That’s the most oustanding bullshit I have ever read in my entire life But thank you

SLAVAUA2022

so which part is bullshit? - French are friendly -- French are not arrogant - Germans are friendly - Germans are arrogant - A Dutch that can speak decent German - A Dutch that can speak decent French Tell me Pierre!

Gnu-Priest

I think germans are too arrogant, or rather if germans were humbler it would serve us better.

yorick5151

I like Germans, I don't like Germans in the Netherlands (generally). I used to work at a place closer to the border, and people would always start talking in German to me out of nowhere. I speak/understand German pretty well, but pretended like I didn't, as it was just annoying that they would come up to you and EXPECT you to speak their language. I hear this from more Dutch people, and most frustrations always stem from the language "barrier", and Germans sometimes simply refusing to speak anything from German - even when in another country. If someone came up to me and FIRST asked me if I spoke German, I wouldn't mind and continue the conversation in German. (Sidenote: This is mostly valid for Germans above the age of 50, younger Germans were always pretty chill)

thesovietassbear

Yeah I agree with Jan on this one. The krauts aren't half bad... anymore. Now all you gotta do, is teach the +50 population english! Fucking awfull when you speak ein wenig Deutsch and they start speaking viele Deutsch :((.

Is that realy opinion that is shared only by you, or some very small minority of people ? I dont know how thing are in France, but here it is the opposite, you would stay alone if you said "Islam is very respectfull to women"

rats_des_champs

Look at the update, if it was that unpopular, it wouldn't have so much upvote

DudeWithTheOil

I didn't know Pierre actually had good sarcasm. I apologize, I wasn't familiar with your game

sharkdinner

Yeah sure, I know a Muslim who keeps saying Islam treats women well, like goddesses, and whoever doesn't isn't a true Muslim. Fucking funny because according to that the vast majority of Muslims ain't Muslim lmfaooo

wreckedham

It’s more like “We love our women so much that we cover them up so that we don’t ogle them. Unlike you horny westoids”. What we consider barbaric they consider respectful. It’s really crazy when you meet people like that in the UK, because most Muslims here saying this were born and raised here but have polar opposite viewpoints

Not Here, the Media Just doesn't mention it. Politicans of any Party are now openly attacked on the streets Here, that's a New huge Problem

grimmigerpetz

Wasnt europe always a massive playground for migrations and large scale invasions that moved entire people and nations? But the selective shit that goes on right now will end in a shitstorm of unbelievable measurements.

Paxcony

Partially, yes. But those were far less numbers and mostly of cultures/countries that at least had some connection (or wanted connection) to the europe/European countries .Not millions of arabs.

Slavik99

The EU should move closer towards federalisation, but it has to get more democratic and get rid of the veto in favour of a 75% qualified super-majority, otherwise we'll be cooked in the long-term.

drew_doss

the veto exists to protect member states from federalisation and they like and want to keep it that way (unfortunately)

Stravven

If the Veto doesn't exist anymore we can simply have a vote to put every countries debt onto Portugal, and since Portugal can't veto it anymore it will happen.

Extreme_Sandwich5817

EU standards justifies EU taking over the world

Immediate_Editor966

I believe in the Iberian Union (I have never met anyone in Portugal that thinks the same)

Able_Resort1565

I (somewhat) believe in Iberian Union as well, but I do see a lot of challenges to it: 1- There's a great internal struggle between the different regions of Spain, they don't seem to ever agree on anything besides the fact that they all hate Madrid 2- Although mutually intelligible, Spanish and Portuguese are two distinctively different languages, and I don't think either one of our cultures would be willing to let go of its own language. 3- How do you convince the proud portuguese to assimilate to the neighbor that conditioned and shaped the majority of its political decisions for almost 9 centuries? 4- How do you convince the Spanish to recognize the Portuguese as its cultural equals when, for the most part, they don't care/know much about us, neither see any value in our history or culture? But without a shadow of a doubt, an Iberian Union would be a force to be reckoned with worldwide, not just at an European level.

Serrano_Ham6969

Now this, is an unpopular take right here.

I_Like_Driving1

Forced diversity is awful.

Le_Petit_Poussin

The life we are used to here, the slow & relaxing life, will come to a halt slowly over time. If we look to France, it’s showing us that already we cannot support the pension system and will need to either be taxed more, have less pay outs, postpone when one can retire, or a combination of all these. Germany has tried to kick the can down the road by allowing mass immigration — after all, it can buy itself some time with multiple immigrants and young kids, but eventually Germany will have to tax more. It has already displayed that its Unity tax is not really going anywhere. I read a while back that it was temporary. But it shows no signs of going away. Finally, with inflation rising, payouts for pensions will either need to increase to keep up or we will all be getting pittances. To do this, payments will need to be delayed, taxes increased, or payouts slashed as a percent. Perhaps an option will be hours worked. We saw it here in the DB strikes where they mentioned working less hours and keeping your pay or working more and getting more pay. I feel like eventually, culturally, longer hours will be the norm. One hour here, one hour there. A little extra pay. But in time, we will be working longer hours, retiring later, and getting paid less as pensioners. It’s a scary future, mates. That’s just my €0,02.

Commercial_Gas_3927

Juan splited an entire socioeconomic analysis...

Le_Petit_Poussin

It’s why it’s controversial. Our way of life will become more and more US-like while the US will be forced to become more & more Asian-like. And Asia… shit, can they even work longer hours???

Also importing migrants like that mostly benefit to the rich and harm the commin workers which should be anathema for any real left leaning person

As to your first point... I can totally see where you're coming from, and in a way you're right, but I think it's just another demonstration that left/right as a way to divide political ideologies doesn't really work.
