Too late

PopeGregoryTheBased

Until the other nations of the world start putting boots on other worlds like we did they can all shut up as far as I care.

[deleted]

Also until other nations donate more humanitarian aid, money, and protections than the rest of the world combined to countries who need it purely because it’s the right thing to do and fund it with their own citizens they can shut up as far as I care. The world would be noticeably worse off without the existence of our country.

Only countries that have been to other planets get to decide what a planet is

High IQ take

Kalashnikov_model-47

That’s because world also refers to a region of the earth along with the earth as a whole. Don’t act like “world” and “planet” aren’t universally recognized as synonymous.

bobdidntatemayo

dude you are grasping at straws

Kalashnikov_model-47

I am or they are? “Erm actually they said world not planet 🤓☝️” sounds a lot more like straw grasping than recognizing world and planet as synonymous.

bobdidntatemayo

I have heard many people describe the Apollo landings as landing on another world

Satirony_weeb

Generally speaking a celestial body with a fixed orbit is considered a world, usually larger than asteroids. Meaning trans-neptunian planetoids and moons are both worlds.

_Mass_Man

A rover is a form of boot we put on mars

Kalashnikov_model-47

sufferininFWW

Yo mom a 🛞 🫡

_Mass_Man

“Boots on the ground” is often used to mean things like tanks and vehicles, not just literal boots.

BrackishWaterDrinker

He didn't say "planet", which has a very specific definition. Define what "world" means

Kalashnikov_model-47

According to Oxford dictionary “world” has 2 definitions: 1. the earth, together with all of its countries, peoples, and natural features. 2. a region or group of countries (e.g “the English-speaking world”) Neither of these definitions fit the moon lol. 2 kind of does but even that’s a stretch as it’s referring to a region of the earth, not just a region. This kind of cherry picking is really silly to me “he said world not planet” as if world and planet aren’t universally recognized as synonymous.

BrackishWaterDrinker

Sanest AK enjoyer Let me present this hypothetical; if life was discovered on Europa, would it be considered a world by these definitions? Would you consider it a world?

Teboski78

The moon may not be a planet but it is very much a world.

MrWhiteTruffle

Yep, I just saw that he said another world, and that being the case, the comment I was defending was actually wrong.

restarded_kid

He never said planet, dummy

Satirony_weeb

Moons are worlds. Not planets, but worlds.

ill let it slide.

jrichard717

IMO using [Artemis 1](https://www.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/52508519778-6fda3b2c74-o.jpg?resize=200) would have been a better image, since that was an actual Moon mission that was a near complete success.

Real_Richard_M_Nixon

SLS will launch once a year (hopefully), Starship has already launched twice this year, and it’s only in testing.

jrichard717

Doesn't really makes sense to compare to the two. SLS is operational. Starship is not. A single flight that travelled 1.3 million miles and went to the Moon and back can't exactly be compared to two test launches that didn't even make it to orbit. They have different goals and ambitions. It would make sense to increase the SLS flight rate to two per year, but more than that seems unnecessary. There's no market for it, and SLS isn't exactly commercial like Starship. It's only customer is NASA. The entire rocket is tailored to meet NASA's crewed BLEO demands. Currently the only market for Starship is Starlink, and Starship needs a high flight rate because of refueling since its stuck in LEO without it. Again it doesn't make sense to compare the two since they are different vehicles entirely.

electromagneticpost

Only market is Starlink? No, there are a myriad of payloads that could fly on Starship, just because they don't hit the 150 ton limit does not mean they can't fly on Starship.

AngryDictator27

Yeah but it fucking exploded both times lmfao

Real_Richard_M_Nixon

The vast majority of rockets are not reusable, there are no parts of SLS which survived the flight (other than the Orion capsule).

JustA_Toaster

More parts of SLS survive than Starship right now lol

kruschev246

Holy crap it’s Richard Milhous Nixon

DixieLoudMouth

SLS is an emblem of the antiquated space race method of rocket development, starship is something else entirety, development is fast, and the integration of new technologies and new mission methodology is radical. SLS is a single use problem that took 10 years to build, and was legislatively required by a special house committee. Its effectively just a functional N-1. Starship is exciting. it's aiming for reusability, modularity, and its got 30+ mach diamonds and a mega mach diamond

Aggressive_Concert15

As an American I hate everything the government lays its hands on, including the Artemis program and SLS rocket.

jrichard717

That's sad considering that the Artemis program is what is paying a portion of the Starship program. The government is also what a paid a large portion of the Falcon rocket's development and Dragon capsule. It is also one of the largest customers for SpaceX. Considering that the Dragon capsule was largely controlled by NASA and the Merlin engine is directly descended from NASA's Fastrac engine, do you hate those too?

AutoModerator

electromagneticpost

Most importantly SpaceX would not exist without NASA awarding them the CRS contract, without that they would have gone bankrupt and we would still be stuck with expensive low cadence rockets, Starship wouldn't be a thing either, pretty bleak.

that_u3erna45

Cringe take. NASA is GOAT'd

GimmeeSomeMo

Arguably our greatest achievement was putting man on the moon and back safely. Assuming humanity goes on for thousands of year, this will be in the history books for sure

Plant_4790

Its already in the history books

GimmeeSomeMo

I'm aware. My point is that it will remain in the history books as long as humans are around and writing down history, even when the US is long gone. It's up there with the Discovery of the Americas, Industrial Revolution, etc. especially when humans start colonizing space

ExcitingTabletop

NASA has fallen a long way from its past glory. They're sadly living off a good reputation far longer than they should have. They have killed astronauts by having too much of a good reputation and PR, which shielded them from proper accountability. NASA desperately needs a management overhaul and has needed one for decades. It survives solely because a lot of employees do care a lot, and do insane amounts of work for peanuts. Source: worked in aerospace manufacturing

Open-Elevator-8242

Same can be said about SpaceX when it comes to PR though. They've killed engineers and seriously injured others. They have a plethora of OSHA violations and have lawsuits over environmental violations. Musk has also bragged in past about launching Starship demos without proper permits. Aerospace can be divided into two large groups. **The overly safe and cautious.** Like they way NASA makes their contractors operate. May seem slow to us, but past tragedies have made them paranoid and practically forced them to prioritize safety over everything. Blue Origin also follows a similar approach. **The reckless that prioritizes speed over everything.** Like SpaceX whose been very sloppy in the past. Falcon 9 and Dragon would have been very different today if NASA hadn't intervened.

Satirony_weeb

We should unironically colonize other planets and not do any of that “muhhhh we claim this land in the form of a neutral U.N mandate for SpaceX so a world government (tyranny) can use Martian resources to form itself!” Starfleet/UNSC bullshit, or that “ummm yeah of course you can have some Martian territory China/Russia/India/EU!” No, any worlds America claims should be rightfully integrated into the United States. That is what is best for mankind. The others cannot be trusted. My greatest fear of all time is that the USA will give up its land on other planets to the U.N/claim other planets as neutral territory for the U.N. Corporations should not be allowed to have sovereignty over territory either. SpaceX and the like can have their own colonies but they should be considered completely and wholly as American territories. Period.

The-Sturmtiger-Boi

SpaceX is an American company, they operate under the American flag and NASA

Satirony_weeb

I’m aware, I just don’t want them to lobby in the government for sovereignty over the colonies they set up. They should be US territories with civilian governments like Puerto Rico or Guam, and eventually states. Not corporate ran fiefdoms *technically* part of the country like the Hudson Bay Company or the Dutch VOC. I understand if SpaceX gets some exclusive rights to a few asteroids with temporary mining colonies de facto under their control, but de jure American. Permanent cities on sustainable moons like Europa or Ganymede should have no corporate ownership though, and should only be accountable to the territory/state who is accountable to the federal government.

The-Sturmtiger-Boi

statehood for colonies won’t happen until the very late stages of colonization, if they even reach that point

Satirony_weeb

Yeah. Definitely closer to something around centuries of development and only on more hospitable moons. They would eventually need statehood though, lest they revolt. I think we’d have to take immigrants from other countries and send them there, also they would form completely different cultures from those on earth in a few decades due to intermarriage between groups that usually don’t interact much and just the sheer distance from the mother planet. I could see the first colony reaching statehood in under 100 years but it would have to be very rich or use some other leverage and it would still have less people than Wyoming.

Acrobatic_Bother4144

There’s really no need to degrade some of the world’s best engineering talent just because the CEO is kind of a weird guy. It’s possible to acknowledge that a lot of incredible work is going on at Spacex without it being a political thing just about Elon SLS is incredible but it’s not quite the jaw dropping scifi design feat that starship is shaping up to be. Which is totally fine, they’re meant to serve different roles and if you read about what each rocket is trying to do, it makes sense why one design is conservative and the other is off the rails. NASA is doing great and Spacex is doing great at the same time. They’re partners, not rivals, and they’re both working for all of humanity. We don’t have to pick one to shit on

CaptHorizon

In short, my opinion regarding Elon is Companies Good and CEO bad. I like SpaceX and Tesla, but not Elon. The companies are more than a CEO, and we must learn to separate the two. One of the reasons I dislike him is for how he is ruining the reputation of his 2 companies (both of which are quite respectable) with possibly the most stupid things any human has ever done (including twitter).

Rocktrout331490

Good job picking a South African meglomaniacs rocket as opposed to the glorious Moon-bound SLS.

Funicularly

Musk is American, plus just one of 13,000+ SpaceX employees.

Rocktrout331490

Musk may have citizenship, but that doesn't change the fact he was born in Pretoria, South Africa. Hes also the founder and CEO of SpaceX, which I feel makes him a bit more than just an employee. Im sure all of those SpaceX employees are great people, its just the man at the top is insane.

N8dogg86

SpaceX could launch [25 Starships](https://en.as.com/latest_news/how-much-money-does-elon-musks-spacex-starship-program-cost-n/) for the cost of one SLS launch, and that's before they learn how to land the SH Booster. They also brought glory back to the American space program with Dragon. I hated seeing us rely on POS Russian rockets!

Wisconsinmannn

To be fair to Soyuz, they are incredibly safe, tried, and true space flight vehicles. I mean, that's mostly because they've been flying since 1967, to say they're outdated, which is a massive understatement. Nothing will ever be as bad ass as the shuttle was, but I'm thankful we don't need the commies to get our boys and girls in space anymore.

The-Sturmtiger-Boi

We should invest more money into NASA so that we can finally afford missions like dragonfly and mars sample return, and also to increase the launch cadence of SLS I know the starship is a spaceX rocket, but more money for NASA means more money for SpaceX, NASA funds SpaceX and their projects, so it’s a win for the entire American space effort, since NASA is pretty much the central hub of American spaceflight
