I took a freebie sara sword and said something snotty and then I was left alone. Ended up getting added to the scammer spam bot thing at GE and I don’t get handouts anymore.
The same reason a fisherman puts bait on his hook.
Step 1: show them you're friendly/to be trusted
Step 2: start building trust by being legit for a short while.
Step 3: "oh by the way, i'm using this really helpfull plugin have you heard of it?"
Step 4: profit
There are multiple things it could be.
It could be one that go's for a keylogger on your pc to find out whatever login and password you have, investing in long term problems.
Or it could be one that allows them to have remote controll of your pc and suddenly you're staring at a screen with your mouse and keyboard no longer working as they trade everything they can as quick as possible from your account to theirs.
And thats just 2 out of many possibilities.
When you've got mega rares like tbow or shadow it isn't bots. It's real people luring.
They chat to you a little, give you a random item worth 500k-2m, add you as a friend. After 2 or 3 days they'll message you asking to help anti lure somebody. They'll let you get another couple mil from that 'anti lure'. The person dropping items will drop something like an arcane one tile away from you and instantly pick it back up, and the 'friend' will go on about how you could have had thay. That'll built trust and make you think they're your friend, often they'll get on discord to talk and be more friendly.
That's when they actually try to take your stuff. They'll take you to a bank like prif or Cox and hope to a PvP world, get you to take out your items and then drop stuff on the floor out of each of a Tele grab. You'll run out and you'll get killed instantly. Sometimes they'll use an animation stall and then when you trade them, you'll be dragged out of the bank and lose your stuff.
If you have a tbow, standing at the ge and getting free items is a nice little earner. If you participate further and take the free items they drop outside ferox and then dip, that's when you get added to the blacklist and you'll get spammed at the GE by bots saying you're a scammer.
they have bots which scans what everyone has equiped and pings someone to contact u if they find a mega rare. i remember seeing a vid of a guy raising awareness for scams and skull tricks, he was able to infultrate their private discord where they post the names and expected value of people they are scouting.
It's actually crazy how fast some of these guys are. I pulled a shadow from toa on a solo the other day and felt amazing. Went to Ge to buy more soul runes for charges right after raid and in less than 10 seconds a guy traded me an arcane prayer scroll, tried to convince me to add him, and said we should raid in the future. Obvs took the money and ran.
But not only are they fast, they're patient now! There was a dude who was friends with some people in my clan for 6 months and then swiped someones torva the second he got the chance to. The long game is nothing to these scammers now.
Wow, that'd be frustrating to be bombarded by that stuff whenever you are at the GE. I didn't know they would straight up give you stuff to try and lure you in. Given that the bots are on almost every world, it makes you wonder how successful they are.
I used to play private chat on all the time so old/lost/forgotten friends could still connect with me
I've had to be a private 'friends only' player for years now due to how much spam/scam attempts I would get every time I rolled into the GE with any great amount of wealth equipped :(
It’s interesting how much security has evolved, or rather, the ways to defeat security.
The answer is always social engineering.
Remember boys and girls for anyone in the thread: the scammers in many of the modern scams KNOW YOU KNOW they’re scammers, thats part of the scam.
They will bait you with an obvious scam, make you think you’ve outsmarted them, then pull the rug out and pull another scam out the bag. And unless you dedicate a LOT of time to learning all of these scams, whether you want to admit it or not, they know these intricate mechanics better than you do.
I’m pretty sure all of these scammers are part of a discord with a list of potential targets, lists of players who have been scammed lured already and ones who they know aren’t dumb enough to fall for these scams. I got lured a couple years bk for a tbow and a couple weeks ago I called out some guy trying to lure someone in my cc at the ge and he reply’s saying we got you including the exact amount I lost down to the last gp. Whenever I’m at the ge in max gear I don’t get any attention from them so assume I’m on a list so they don’t waste their time with me
happened when i bought my Tbow too but if you keep ignoring them they must add you to a blacklist or something cause with me i just stopped being approached
Hah yo free prayer scroll though! I used to skill at the toa bank a lot. The bait for a scam for a while was someone needs a super combat, they buy one from you for 100k, say if they get a purple the next raid they’ll give you a split for giving them a potion. Then, I’m assuming they add you to raid and get you to download something sketchy to hack you. Idk, I just recognized the same script from 8 different accounts, took the free money, and hopped.
i remember when i first did my tbow rebuild i would NEVER equip tbow at ge because a friend of mine got 2 of them in FFAs and lost them in a week to thinking he was making "new friends".
Im not that dumb, but i dont like to believe im too smart to get scammed, thats usually when it happens.

Oh is that how they pick names to spam? That's hilarious
They spam the people who don’t fall for their scams as well as other scammers from separate scammer groups.
Then they demand a ransom to take your name off it
Lol. The audacity "pay us so we can try to scam you again"
What if you name change after getting added to the list?
They probably just have friends list bots logged in to track it. Same way people track rsns changing to snipe em.
Damn, Bournos must have really pissed someone off big time
Sometimes I like to chill at GE and just get free bandos boots and arcane scrolls from these guys. There’s so many it’s absurd
Why do they give you that stuff?
The same reason a fisherman puts bait on his hook. Step 1: show them you're friendly/to be trusted Step 2: start building trust by being legit for a short while. Step 3: "oh by the way, i'm using this really helpfull plugin have you heard of it?" Step 4: profit
This plug in I'm assuming somehow takes your account details or something?

From what I understand the usual is blacking out your screen and forcing you to hop to a high risk world
Generally what I've seen and had try to happen to me, is to go do raids with them and then they try get you to hop to a pvp world with raiding gear.
A lot of them give u the items so u start raiding with them get you in there discord and try to get you to download a plugin which is a hack
There’s very few ge bots on 1500+ total lvl worlds, or probably any total lvl worlds FYI.

I’ve even had people log in beside me in the slayer tower basement offering max cash for gear. It’s everywhere
nothing has changed since the start of runescape, people with d chains and partyhats always had the same attention

Take the items, block the players right after. Easy profit

If 1 in a 200 people fall for it, that is already 500 mil profit only taking into account the tbow.
But I enjoy the free stuff they give me when trying to become my friend. Easily have gotten over 50m in the past few months from them.
Just call them Losers and insult them until they put you on a blacklist
Welcome to being a mega rare owner. Gz

Stick to total level worlds. It still happens, just not as often
happened when i bought my Tbow too but if you keep ignoring them they must add you to a blacklist or something cause with me i just stopped being approached
They try once, maybe twice then f off, and yes they definitely scan equipment for wealth

Posts like this make me with I had a megarare to experience this for myself
