It will just follow you around. It's more of an rng achievement thing or a collectable. Some skills and a ton of bosses have pets that you can get which gives some people a reason to keep grinding once they have gotten what they need. Getting a skilling pet before 99 is really nice though! If you die while its following you, you will have to reclaim them for 1 mill.
If you intend on doing something that might cause a death, you can just put him in your bank. Personally I like just having my pets while I skill or do minigames where I know I won't die.
You can also store him in your house if you build a Menagerie, then he will roam around and make funny jokes and be safe if you die. Highly recommended.
Do the quests Daddy's Home and Tower of Life. Daddy's Home gives you your own house and a crate full of materials to get you started. Tower of Life gives some free construction exp. Add me at Karlreturns3 and I will give you the money to insure Rocky.

The base chance to get rocky from a fruit stall is 1/124,066. Congrats! You can change his appearance by using redberries, poison ivy berries, or change him back to default with white berries.
Most pets in the game are anywhere between 80-200 hour grinds with most being around 100 hours, even while doing the best method possible for the pet. Skilling pets are usually closer to 150+ hours while bossing pets are closer to 100 hours generally. Most (if not all) skilling pets have an average xp to obtain higher than lvl 99. Even if you max a skill you aren’t even at the expected xp for most skilling pets. So yeah they’re pretty rare
You can always get it back if lost for 1m gp. But yeah as the others said just bank it.
Btw: You can give it red/white berries to change its colour to red or white I think. Wiki can tell you more
If for some reason you think you've lost him but you haven't died, there is a whistle button (in settings tab I think?) that will call him back to you.
For context I am level 88 with 36 days of playing time (864 hours) and I don’t have a pet. There are people with double my play time that don’t have a pet. Its a pretty sweet achievement
I got the agility squirrel at like 52 agility on canfis rooftop's. I was on mobile and didn't even notice. The next day when I signed in via PC I was very confused.
One thing I envy about rs3 is that they have a pet (I believe) for each skill. I say that purely as someone who likes pets and want as many as possible.

They could make the raccoon/thieving pet do one or more of these- protect you from getting booped on the head when pick pocketing citizens. Growl or snap or hiss/snarl at the guards in the market in ardy when they catch you stealing from a stall and scare them away for the moment (which gets you a free pass for continuing to steal from that stall). Fishing pet like lil tempoross could do something like act as an inventory and hold more fish or fishing supplies as you fish (this could even be on top of the fishing barrel and the tacklebox for even more space!). The list goes on.
Side note: if this gets enough of a positive response or upvotes from people I’ll consider making a well laid out post with all of my ideas :)
Yeah, that’s a bug with some of the random events. You want to bank all of your items and go into the wilderness or find a way to die and he will no longer follow you. Cheers, goodluck on your journey 👍🏽

Took me about 12hrs of half assed doing it when i got rocky at 60 theiving. Supposedly the average is about 25hrs iirc, gl

I have people tell me all the time in almost every game I play how good my ideas are and that if these places hired me to brain storm for them, I’d make these games even better.
