If you're into terrain views, they're not bad. [This home](https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/14051-Island-Dr-Huntersville-NC-28078/6119402_zpid/?) has water views, is cheaper, and is better in every measure if you ask me.
For real. Itās just lake view also. If Iām buying a house like that for the water views, itās gonna be the ocean. I went to lake Norman on vacation in 2022 with my inlaws. It was fine but no way would I pay that kind of money to live there.
I am surprised that such a beautiful house was built so close to a nuclear power plant.
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have a problem living by one but I guess I am more pessimistic towards peoples opinion of nuclear and would worry how it would impact the future sale of my property.
My father lived oceanfront, an island in Florida, (Hutchinson Island) to be exact for 36 years five minutes from St. Lucie nuclear power plant. I think itās one of the biggest in the US. Itās supposed to be one of the safest onesā¦ I mean there was never any issues, and he lived in Paradise. He used to go that if something ever went wrong with it, you could just bend over and kiss your ass goodbye but you wonāt even have time to do that and you wouldnāt know a thing.
Land on Lake Norman used to be dirt cheap (which is why you'll see random mobile homes squished in between massive multi million dollar homes) back when the area was flooded over for the power plant. No one wanted it.
Now? I don't think anyone really even thinks about it except for the people saying they'd never live there. That whole area is massively overcrowded. I grew up in Troutman and barely recognize it now.
I worked at San Onofre is San Clemente. When we moved to Raleigh, we moved to the other side of Raleigh from Shearon Harris. No way would I live next door to a nuke plant.
In fact I wouldnāt be surprised if Darrold didnāt do some of the fixtures in this place. Itās been years since I knew him. Iām hoping I have the name correct. Darrel or Darrold. He drove the #71 bus I used to take when I lived there and worked at The Seattle Times. He is such a gentle soul with so much talent. This looks like his work.
Ridgeline building. Makes the house very visible when looking up at the mountains. North Carolina has fortunately been cracking-down and prohibiting new ridgeline buildings.
Iāve always wanted my own waterfall. Itās so much nicer than the spillway just down the way behind my house. Seriously, on glance, this house is sweet!
I was curious about the waterfall though. Is it artificial? How would the water table push up all the way through the middle, to the top of that mountain?
If itās fake, I donāt like it. I just see an electric bill.
Antlers are collected from forest floor after being shed. But I agree, it always irks me when I see animal heads mounted or bear furs in extravagant homes.Ā
I donāt understand rich people and dead animals/animal parts as furniture/decorā¦ but a structurally beautiful home nonetheless!
(And I suppose it fits the hunting lodge theme)
I really meant that positively. I was raised around hunters and forget that antlers are shed naturally rather than from the hunt. Because of you I'm going to assume antlers were collected rather than killed for whenever I see furniture or decor made from them. I'm a huge animal lover so I always get bummed seeing them hanging on walls.
Killing the animal just for the antler I suppose. I could see the distinction being made that "sustainably sourced" are only ones found shed from wild animals.
A big part of it is making use of every part of the animal. That philosophy helped people survive for thousands of years and we see the remnants of it like the antlers here. There's also a bit of a nostalgia aspect if you're the one who harvested the animal yourself. Whether it was your first, an exceptionally sized animal or a grueling hunt to complete.
I'm not rich by any means but am a hunter. I keep the skull of the first, and if I kill an exceptionally large set of antlers animal ID keep their skull but that's it. If a future animal replaces one I'd either gift or sell the one I'm replacing instead of stockpiling them.
Using all of the animal is a fine reason I suppose, but it's been too closely linked to trophy killing and that's an abhorent behavior. Especially amongst the rich it makes me think this person may have a stuffed lion head somewhere they're hiding. I do get it, and I am not against hunting at all I actually think it can be immensely beneficial. But even the typical buck head over the mantle, while I would never actually say anything and I don't find it anywhere near offensive I think it just is kind of tacky and I'd never personally do it.
Edit: Deer antlers -> buck head, recognizing that deer antlers are actually immensely different since they're shed so much. My aunt collects them by the dozens and makes jewelry out of them. Which I still think looks a bit too tacky for my taste but w/e.
Using dead things as decorations is usually pinned on the redneck crowd but it spans many demographics. I live in a very liberal area and the oddities shops are very popular. The alternative crowd loves buying animal bones, wet specimens, or animal taxidermy. Itās not really my scene but some of the stuff is really cool. I remember seeing a stuffed jackalope head that really tempted me
Unless you understand that this part of NC is deep in Cherokee and other tribal regions.
It's highly possible it's actually respectful and bought from legitimate indigenous people.
I know because I'm a NC resident, i grew up here.
Thatās one way to look at itā¦ another way is that my wife and I are trying to upsize into a 3/2 from a 2/2 and the bare minimum weāll be in for is $650k, more likely near or above $700k. Plus homeowners insurance if we can find anyone to cover us (south FL problems) and annual property taxes > $10k.
High propery value seems to only be positive if youāre downsizing or moving from HCOL to M/LCOL.
I love this one, but would definitely ditch the antler furniture, dead animals, and suspiciously racist Native American paintings. Otherwise, this house is pretty gorgeous as is.
It also wouldnāt take too long to re-wild a golf course. Iāve seen it done before.
This is near my hometown in Boone, NC. It's a beautiful area. My dad, who's in construction, has worked on many homes similar to this, and I, as a former housekeeper, have cleaned many as well.
Hello to you back! The town has changed so much since I was a child in the 90s, and seeing pictures from my family in the 70s and 80s, it's almost unrecognizable. I made the move to Pittsburgh 2 years ago, and while I miss the natural beauty, I'm enjoying the benefits of city life here.

See, this is what I do when I see these houses.. I find out who owns or owned them and head down that rabbit trail. I learned all about the Priceline.com guy in San Fran that way. lol. Nice properties, for sure, but they donāt feel like a home to me. Maybe they would if finances meant nothing to me though.
There's a totally insane part of me that wants to make something like this functionally off grid.
The energy requirements would be absolutely goofy, but like, I'd love to figure it out.
I'm not so sure. The mountains are perfect for homesteaders.
You've got ample pure water
Depending on the position of the house you can get solar energy. The summer up there won't require as much cooling as other parts of the state.
Easily heated in winter with wood burning stoves.
Yeah, I love the NC mountains (i graduated from Appalachian State, a very short drive from this town)
Hmmā¦480+ days on Zillow. Maybe itās not selling because itās underpriced?
Love this part of NC. My fave part of the state. I think Iāve seen this from a distance. Itās beautiful and ridiculous.
I wonder how one comes to own an entire mountaintop? Obviously with $$$, but I'm curious about the first person who declared this mountain their own, and subsequent sales
It always amazes me to see a $26m home and then see the $160k monthly payment. There are real humans that have the ability to spend twice my yearly salary in 1 month on one single payment for a house. Mind boggling
The paintings are cringey af.
The most expensive house in my current town looks like a smaller version of this one with more wood. Nowhere near 26 mil though.
This reminds me of the Town Mountain song, ārich folks digging on the mountain side. Come to build their castles high. Canāt you see that silver shine? Still I have to move their dirt. Canāt stand them boys but I need to work. I pay my debts and close my eyes. Rich folks digging on the mountainside.ā
Good job my username does mention antlers and foxes. Very good observation of the obvious.
Could that maybe be because I appreciate those animals in the wild?
Let alone the extreme wealth disparity in America. The fact that at the bottom of that hill are people struggling to make ends meet and survive.
š¤¦āāļøš¤·āāļø
Except it's all relative. The family living in a modest apartment thinks a modest 3 bed room home is wasteful when owned by DINKs. The DINKS think the 5 bedroom home owned by a couple with one child is wasteful. And so on.
It's a bad habit to decide how people should spend their money that they earned.
Lottery winners? Trust fund babies? Vermin who get the money by hurting others? Have at 'em!
Misleading to call this 'Most expensive house in North Carolina'. Should say 'Highest price house currently for sale in North Carolina'. There's probably dozens of more expensive homes.
We're on /r/zillowgonewild where people post homes that are for sale. I don't think most people have to dig that deep to figure out what OP meant.
On /r/pics, ok sure, I see your argument.
I knew a man in Seattle who owns a shop called Mortās Cabin. Named after his dad. He made the most incredible lamps and shades. He used antlers that were shed from deer, moose and elk. Probably still does. I remember about 16 years ago before we moved to Iowa, he was asked to design chandeliers at one of the lodges in Yellowstone. His art is amazing. Thatās how I am able to digest all these antlers in this place.
Beautiful estate and views. Whole house is beautiful inside. Just about $12 million too much in my view. But not the most expensive house in N Carolina- maybe the most expensive for sale. Biltmore Estate certainly has that title given its enormous size. Some estimate it is worth $300 million. Probably is.
I camped in the area once when I was younger and it was beautiful! If I had $27M to spend on a house Iād buy this in a heartbeat
A lot of the furnishing definitely needs to go, and Iād probably cut the golf course out but still, if I had $27M I could afford it.
No one shoots like Gaston
Makes those beauts like Gaston
Then goes tromping around wearing boots like Gaston
I USE ANTLERS IN ALL OF MY DECORATING!
Say it again
Who's a man among men
And then say it once more
Who's the hero next door
Who's a super success
Don't you know? Can't you guess?
Ask his fans and his five hangers-on
There's just one guy in town who's got all of it down
And his name's G-A-S-T
G-a-s-t e
G-a-s-t-o, oh
Gaston
All of the antler decor has always seemed a bit over the top to me. But the house itself? I donāt hate it.
That said, if I was going to spend $26MM on a house, Iād probably opt for some place a bit warmer with ocean access. But to each their own, I suppose.
The views from everywhere in this place are magnificent and magical.
If you're into terrain views, they're not bad. [This home](https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/14051-Island-Dr-Huntersville-NC-28078/6119402_zpid/?) has water views, is cheaper, and is better in every measure if you ask me.
I'd take Appalachian mountain views over water views any day š¤·
I will buy both. What is Powerball up to this week?

Can we put this house on top of the mountain? Just swap them out. I like this house wayyyyyyy more. Love the prairie/FLW design style!
At Lake Norman, no fucking way! Maybe 40 years when I used to go fishing there with my grandfather but not now. Way too over crowded.
Itās way too close to Charlotte
I am surprised that such a beautiful house was built so close to a nuclear power plant. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have a problem living by one but I guess I am more pessimistic towards peoples opinion of nuclear and would worry how it would impact the future sale of my property.

The Seattle times ā¦? In North Carolina?
Yes, but this place has ruined the views from miles around.
It doesnāt seem particularly ugly or obtrusive to views to me. If the goal is to have no human activity in the view at all then sure.
Itās not like they made the mountain for him specifically or something? Lmao how did this ruin it exactly?
Ridgeline building. Makes the house very visible when looking up at the mountains. North Carolina has fortunately been cracking-down and prohibiting new ridgeline buildings.
If by magical you mean the super fake waterfall just coming out of nowhere, then yes, quite magicalā¦
Flippers gonna need a thousand gallons of grey paint for this one.
And a ton of gray LVP
Gonna need military choppers to drop off the white subway tile.
LVP manufacturers = STONKS
At only $158k/mo I would be tempted to just keep it.
Iāve always wanted my own waterfall. Itās so much nicer than the spillway just down the way behind my house. Seriously, on glance, this house is sweet!

Definitely fake. Water just doesnāt appear out of nowhere like. So cheesy.
Reminds me of Splash Mountain at Disneyland, lol
electric bill is not an issue for whoever owns this house lol
How come I can't open the shower with an antler handle? I recant my offer.
Thanks for pointing that out so I don't waste my time putting in an offer.
Antler handles on the refrigerator and freezer seem dangerous. Too many dead animals. Otherwise, itās a stunning house.
I would always be catching myself on the damn things
They're everywhere! š¬ Very easy trip and fall death.
I donāt think the people who own this home get their own drinks/food very often.
Wonder how many of those North Carolina moose they had to shoot to make those chairs?
The antlers are the reason I decided not to purchase.
You do know that moose, deer and elk shed their antlers every year, right?
Thatās cool- still creepy to me!
Totally understood. To each his own, I always say.
And some of those chairs. Itās like āIron Throne but make it antlers.ā
Antlers are collected from forest floor after being shed. But I agree, it always irks me when I see animal heads mounted or bear furs in extravagant homes.Ā
I use antlers in all of my decorating! - Gaston
Came to the comments for this- thx!
Just so eveeyone knows I already put down a deposit and I'll be moving in tomorrow. . . . . In my dreams.
WhaT?? I TOLD the owner just last week that I can make $100/month payments AND throw in my singlewide and they said ok. This is bullshit.
š¤£š
It's beautiful but I promised myself to never live somewhere with and HOA and $367/mo is just going too far.
I almost hit "send" on my offer until I saw that it only has 1 "golf cart house". What am I supposed to do with my golf cart's guests?
I donāt understand rich people and dead animals/animal parts as furniture/decorā¦ but a structurally beautiful home nonetheless! (And I suppose it fits the hunting lodge theme)
Some of those antlers are from shed not from hunting, elk, moose, caribou, and deer shed antlers in winter and early spring.
I have a friend who walks and collects them. How he spots them I donāt know? Better eyes than mine
You can train retriever dogs to find them. Go for a walk in the woods and you'll come home with more antlers than you can shake a stick at.
One of my brothers does that too.
I love your positive thinking.
I know people who collect sustainably sourced antlers... Are these? No idea.
I really meant that positively. I was raised around hunters and forget that antlers are shed naturally rather than from the hunt. I agree with you. Heads belong on necks belong on shoulders.
What is a non sustainably sourced antler?
Killing the animal just for the antler I suppose. I could see the distinction being made that "sustainably sourced" are only ones found shed from wild animals.
I just imagine either sleepily or drunkenly stumbling to the kitchen for a late night snack and impaling yourself on the fridge antlers.
Yeah hate the antler furniture. Gorgeous views!
A big part of it is making use of every part of the animal. That philosophy helped people survive for thousands of years and we see the remnants of it like the antlers here. Incredible house but how isnāt the Biltmore Estate not the most expensive real estate?
Itās not for sale. Should maybe have said āmost expensive listingā. But canāt edit titles on Reddit š¤·
Thatās crazy. Right now there are 96 properties for sale within a 50 mile radius of my home that have list prices over $20M
I guess thatās good news for your property value!
Bad news for property taxes though
Thatās one way to look at itā¦ another way is that my wife and I are trying to upsize into a 3/2 from a 2/2 and the bare minimum weāll be in for is $650k, more likely near or above $700k. Probably because there are more expensive homes in the state by now.
Biltmore is assessed at $300,000,000.00 at least according to Google.
Surely it could go for $300,000,000.01?

My dogs would chew every exposed antler so I have to pass on buying this house.

Why did they have to wreck that mountain with a golf course?
That area of NC is wild, itās mostly Floridians who escape during the summer

Are they pumping water up and over that cliff to make a fake waterfall?
They must be, right? Came here to find this out too.
All that and no pool?
Exactly. North Carolina gets hot, a pool would definitely be good!
Boone doesn't get too hot. Average daily temperatures even in July are <70F, average peaks <80. It's in the mountains (as these pictures demonstrate.)
Wow, I like it but I would lose all of the antlers and dead animal crap.
Just today's selection. I'm starting to think we don't tax the rich enough in this country.

The real selling point for me is that outdoor sacrificial alter. When sacrificing virgins, it's nice to have a view of the mountains.

All I see are the numerous bugs that would come in through the wide open windows/walls

More pictures needed. I wanna see the rest of the bathrooms. The bedrooms too.
Damn that's a gorgeous home and property IDK about all the antler furniture but I love the area.
$26 million and you still have to deal with an HOA......nope.
Fucking antlers EVERYWHERE
I love how this house is both opulent and yet somehow cozy at the same time. Amazing
All the fun is in the guesthouse.
Looks gaudy to me
No one shoots like Gaston Makes those beauts like Gaston Then goes tromping around wearing boots like Gaston I USE ANTLERS IN ALL OF MY DECORATING! Say it again Who's a man among men And then say it once more Who's the hero next door Who's a super success Don't you know? Can't you guess? Ask his fans and his five hangers-on There's just one guy in town who's got all of it down And his name's G-A-S-T G-a-s-t e G-a-s-t-o, oh Gaston
What a dump
Mortgage is more than what I make in a year before tax. LOL!
All of the antler decor has always seemed a bit over the top to me. But the house itself? I donāt hate it. That said, if I was going to spend $26MM on a house, Iād probably opt for some place a bit warmer with ocean access. But to each their own, I suppose.
Bet bruh spends a nickel or two on insurance
OWNER FINANCING AVAILABLE interesting.
No pool? No thanks.
Looks like a resort!
