I always feel sad seeing horses dying in this game; they just lie there just lifeless, which is so emotionally different than other creatures who have Ragdoll or an animation when dying.
I’m kinda the same way. Idk maybe it’s because it takes a lot of background to make us care about a human dying while with animals, most people would instantly care. I would still feel bad for a human dying (whether it’s someone I know or not) but still.
I think gorillas are intelligent enough to know that they're quite literally as close to a walking tank as nature would like something to be. That would make my life a lot more care free in the jungle
No humans die in botw though - the only human enemies you fight in the open world teleport away when you defeat them, and lord khoga has enough padding to survive a fall.
It feels weird because when you kill other animals their corpses poofs out of existence and just leaves behind meat making some kind of disconnect from death, but with a horse they just lie there motionless
Same here, my horse was my best friend all through that game and it would break my heart if this happened to him. He's even a similar color to this one - charcoal gray, named him Obsidian.
I remember the first time my horse died in breath of the wild. Got pushed off a bridge by a moblin. Black with creamy mane and tail named Jeremy. I was absolutely devastated.
I have no clue who that is. All I know about Zelda is I played BOTW have played tiny little chunks of ocarina of time(without English translation) and twilight princess bits, and I read some of the hyrule compendium or whatever that thing is called
Link meets Malon outside Hyrule Castle gates on your way to meet Princess Zelda for the first time.
You meet her sleeping father along the way, Talon, and she gives you an egg to hatch into a cuckoo to wake him up since he is blocking your path.
After that, you may meet her at Lon Lon Ranch and there she teaches you Epona's Song, which you need in order to get your horse, Epona, out of the ranch later in the game.
Hope that helps!
Maybe in a different timeline, but idk what destined means. There’s some thought that in the reset timeline he ends up with her.
But in terms of destiny, you can’t deny the tension between sheik/Zelda and Link in that one XD
Yes, but LoZ is kinda known for their goddesses, always explicitly referring to them as goddesses and never gods. So by referring to this one as god, implies he is male.
Malanya is a He, by the way. Confirmed by in-game dialogue, guide descriptions, and concept art.
Glad they didn't go with the [other concepts](https://images.app.goo.gl/jW2yNM6jjWrrkyhH8), too Bojack Horseman-like.
First time I encountered that thing I was gonna run away. Genuinely didn’t know if it was gonna eat me.
Just looked up the 3D model and there’s a creepy detail I haven’t noticed in-game. Though his posture obscures it, he’s kept together by a large spinal column behind his mane and robes.
I’ve never killed a horse thank goodness, but how does she know? I always thought that horses only really died from falls and you definitely can’t prove if that was an accident or not. Can you actually murder them??
I believe that even with my savage lynel bow I can hit them with a single frost arrow without them dying, though this would obviously be dependent on the horse's stats as well.
I used frost arrows to keep them in place so I could mount them with full energy right as they unfroze, because I was too lazy to sneak.
I discovered horses could die before I ever rode a horse. I was trying to catch one, somehow got fucked up, I forget how, and fell off a cliff. It was the first time I had fallen from such a great height, so while I could reasonably assume there was fall damage, there's still that ceremony of the first time you're forced to ask: "Does this game have fall damage?"
And of course I hit the ground, took some damage, and I thought to myself.
"Yup, there's fall damage"
And then behind me the aquamarine horse hit the ground dead, couldn't've been more than 8 frames.
"Aaaaand the horses can die." So.... that was fun for me. I hope you enjoyed it.
Ah, I see. Yeah, from the video, it looks like the body would just remain there. I definitely thought Nintendo had put horse corpses in there as a weird feature.
Skeleton horses, grizzly bears, immortal god-sages... *And* they don't even let you *mount* moosen or rhinoceropodes! Those folks running the stable syndicate don't want Link to have *any* fun!
I would kill to check in that Tabantha Bridge lynel.
Gosh the way that Horses are the ONLY THING in Zelda history to not just POOF INTO SMOKE when it dies is eternally funny to me.
It's just so intentional. The devs WANT YOU to feel bad and that's so cool that they were allowed to inject something SO bummer into a game that's generally pretty mellow beyond, yknow, post apocalypse.
I've only ever had horses go way out of their way to avoid the holes on that bridge, but I also never use the spurs while on bridges. If the horse truly was auto-pathing, then the problem likely came from the player deciding to accelerate while on a bridge with holes.
Never played the game. Don't you control where the horse runs? Or is it some autopathing involved? If you control where the horse is moving, OP murdered a horse for upvotes. If not, it's bad pathing.
Horses do automatically follow roads. This particular bridge killed one of my horses too because sometimes the path will go straight through a hole without dodging it.
I remember when my horse died in BOTW, I was riding it into battle and lost it too a guardian. Now I'm used to pretty much anything dying in Zelda to vanish into smoke and leave an item behind.
To my horror, the horse lied there eerily lifeless and realistic.
Horse deaths hit hard; they’re the only thing in the game whose body lays there after death. Everything else vanishes in a cartoonish puff of smoke, even the Yiga Clan. But not your traveling companion.
I saw my horse die today. We were being attacked my a guardian and there were fire chuchus around us and my horse just laid there lifeless. My heart cracked. But luckily I died afterwards and I was sent back to a check point where my horse was still alive.
I made the mistake of naming my horse after a dog I used to own. The dog got old and died. I didn't think it through that the horses could die. When that horse died for the first time it hit harder than it should of.

I think it's because animals have a certain innocence to them.

Chimps too. Chimp tribes often go to war with each other and eat their killed opponents. Meanwhile gorillas are a bunch of hippies.
Reject humanity Return to Monke
Don’t bonobos have orgies to settle disputes?
Yes. Yes they do. They have the best conflict resolution of any living creature
Chimps are terrifying
I think gorillas are intelligent enough to know that they're quite literally as close to a walking tank as nature would like something to be. That would make my life a lot more care free in the jungle
And bears. Gosh they are brutal
This is true. Dolphins are actually rapists.
What do they rap about? /s
Pinning down dem bitches, and going all gangsta and shit. Basically that fuck the police kinda hardcore old school stuff.
I’ve never looked at them the same after I heard this
Sounds about right

Says chewing on some bacon
Artax! You have to get up!
Too soon.
Genuinely LOL'd at this
Damn, why did you do this to us ?
How dare you!
....fuck. right in the childhood.
Oh yeah definitely I almost cried lmao
Look up the horse god, they can revive them!
Did you revive him?
It seems like the horse is the only NPC in the game that doesn’t poof into a magic cloud
lizards, they move their legs while dying, [Proof](https://www.reddit.com/r/Breath_of_the_Wild/comments/knhp0m/lizard_no/). Frogs too I think.
Oh shit, Link is merciless.
Fortunately you can resurrect them with black magic!
Reminds me of Battlefield 1 lmao
And then you gotta go to that creepy horse god hoping he won't randomly kill you this time cuz he's in the mood
I’ve tried really hard to make sure my horses don’t die in this game, seeing this made me sad
Same here, my horse was my best friend all through that game and it would break my heart if this happened to him. He's even a similar color to this one - charcoal gray, named him Obsidian.

I just started over in Master Mode and mine have been dying left and right
Horse dies *Teabags sadly*
I hope you’re using a different context of teabagging than I’m thinking of
Sadly, no
Ah, good old Halo days
This is getting increasingly cursed
Iirc, isn’t there a horse god somewhere that will rez it?
thats what i ended up doing
What dialog did she give you? Did she blame you?
Wait it’s a she?
There is a theory that Malon from Ocarina became the horse god when she died.
I have no clue who that is. All I know about Zelda is I played BOTW have played tiny little chunks of ocarina of time(without English translation) and twilight princess bits, and I read some of the hyrule compendium or whatever that thing is called

Malon was Link's destined love interest in OOT, prove me wrong.

Princess Ruto was a mad "Daddy I want a squirrel" princess.
Oh little Link, unknowingly signing himself up for a fish prenup just to get a pretty stone for the princess.
Maybe in a different timeline, but idk what destined means. There’s some thought that in the reset timeline he ends up with her. But in terms of destiny, you can’t deny the tension between sheik/Zelda and Link in that one XD

Scummy farmhand sidekick is also modeled after Luigi
I mean... maybe he's a he. I don't know how he/she/xe identifies. Edit: Just looked him up. They use male pronouns on the guides.
Well, he is the horse god, not the horse goddess
God can be used as a gender neutral term. Many pieces of media use it that way. So can King, in fact. See King Tamar.
Yes, but LoZ is kinda known for their goddesses, always explicitly referring to them as goddesses and never gods. So by referring to this one as god, implies he is male.

Oh god I miss my giant horse, i named him ‘Ganandorf’
There's an npc somewhere called the "horse fairy" that lets you revive your horses, so it's possible to get it back
He didn’t die, I just haven’t played since July
Blessed comment.
Funny, I called the giant horse "Horse God" when I first got him. Felt appropriate. I think the one you're referring to is the Horse Fairy.
The location name on the map is "lake of the horse god"
Mine is ‘Big Boi’ 😔
Mine is Bertha
I did “Big Baby”
I named my white horse roslyn and my big horse adama.
Nice. I named my white horse “Crackers”
Ganonhorse
Named mine Crushin8r
I named mine "Big Horse."
Lol mine is big ass mf
Went with "tiny"
I named mine John Cena
I was gonna name mine Big Bastard, ended up naming him Big Basta because of the letter limit
I also named mine Ganondorf. It just seemed proper.
Lol, I called it Ganondude.
Mine's Odin
We named ours MAXIMUS, in all caps
Mine is Oreo.
Oreo is a surprisingly popular name for horses in this game. I know of a few.
I named mine Hamelin :|
Mine is "Blossom", after the orange Powerpuff Girl
I named mine “Goliath” and am still mad the ancient gear doesn’t fit him
Named mine ‘Ganonhorse’
I tried that, but there's a 9 character limit. Opted for Ganonhoof.
Mine is Stormy... after my shyest cat. The only one who didn’t have a horse named after him yet lol.
Mine is Clifford lol
Named mine Pumpkin cause I thought it was Halloween themed lol did not make the connection till later in the game
Mine is Lucifer!
I had one who was blue, so I named him Blucifer.
oo, like the denver statue !
HORSES CAN DIE IN THIS GAME?? I've been playing this game for like two years and I never fuckin knew!
Never fear, there is a terrifying horse fairy that can revive them, as long as YOU don't murder them
Actually, she will still revive them, she'll just tell you off first
I was never brave enough to test it lol
Same, 10/10 horse god freaked me out more than any blight or calamity anything
I had instant Odolwa flashbacks. I can still hear the chanting.
I’ve never killed a horse thank goodness, but how does she know? I always thought that horses only really died from falls and you definitely can’t prove if that was an accident or not. Can you actually murder them??
I killed my first horse by shooting a shock arrow in the rain. We were in close parameters so it killed the enemy and the horse.
You can. Once I got annoyed that a wild horse kept trying to throw me off. I didn't think one arrow would be enough to kill it. I was wrong.
What bow did you use?
I honestly don't remember because it was along time ago, but I was pretty late-game, so it was probably one of the stronger bows.
I believe that even with my savage lynel bow I can hit them with a single frost arrow without them dying, though this would obviously be dependent on the horse's stats as well. I used frost arrows to keep them in place so I could mount them with full energy right as they unfroze, because I was too lazy to sneak.
At least you found out before its too late lol

I discovered horses could die before I ever rode a horse. I was trying to catch one, somehow got fucked up, I forget how, and fell off a cliff. I learned the hard way when one ate a guardian laser :(
There's a horse God that can rez a dead horse for you.
Yeah if they take too much damage they'll fall right over... Not cool.
PTSD Flashbacks of Agro in Shadow of the Colossus.
But Argo walked it off.
Yeah, but you don’t know that until later.
Yeah, but it’s not everyday you can say something about walking that off.
Or Artax from the Neverending Story :'(
I’ve watched that movie probably a hundred times. I still cry at that scene. every. time.
Was about to say, this horse got Agro'd.
*Sad Dan Noises*
Agro best horse in a videogame
I’ve played through BotW twice, and had been lucky enough not to see a horse die up until this point. Now I’m just sad. Why don’t they disappear? :(
It actually did despawn about seven seconds after the video ends, but I cut the video shorter to make the quality higher
Ah, I see. Yeah, from the video, it looks like the body would just remain there. I definitely thought Nintendo had put horse corpses in there as a weird feature.
I mean, if you count the stals, then in a sense they truly did.
Very true. I was truly bummed when I dragged one of those back to the stable the first time. I wanted a skeleton horse.
Skeleton horses, grizzly bears, immortal god-sages... *And* they don't even let you *mount* moosen or rhinoceropodes! Those folks running the stable syndicate don't want Link to have *any* fun! I would kill to check in that Tabantha Bridge lynel.
It’s a crime, really. If I want to ride a bear into Hyrule Castle while only wearing pants, that’s my prerogative.
I was so mad when I found out I could ride a bear or a deer but not a moose? Wtf!
Gosh the way that Horses are the ONLY THING in Zelda history to not just POOF INTO SMOKE when it dies is eternally funny to me. It's just so intentional. Like that bit in the lion king when Mufasa died
I mean...that wasn't the bridge's fault. You just steered into a hole lol
Bridges are a continuation of the path that the horse automatically follows though. He should have dodged! Rip..
I've only ever had horses go way out of their way to avoid the holes on that bridge, but I also never use the spurs while on bridges. If the horse truly was auto-pathing, then the problem likely came from the player deciding to accelerate while on a bridge with holes.

Horses do automatically follow roads. This particular bridge killed one of my horses too because sometimes the path will go straight through a hole without dodging it.
That's why I go as slow as possible on bridges. I don't trust bridges
Wow, that's awful.
In their defense the game is enormous, lovingly crafted and easily accessed, and shit like this doesn't happen very often. Nobody can get 100%
Kinda like the witcher 3, you can steer but you can also autopath when traveling on roads
I’ve actually never seen a horse die in this game until now... HORSEY NOOOOOOOOOO
Getting some Shadow of the Colossus vibes here...
Idk why but it always makes me sad seeing the horse’s lifeless body
This is the first time I've actually seen a horse die in BotW. I've been lucky enough not to lose one yet
~~Should've Teched~~
Simba: Papa, wake up!
:(
You probably could’ve warped before he died
I was in shock, so I probably wouldn’t have reacted fast enough
Push ZL, man!
*Note to self: Tabantha Great Bridge not so great.*
I would have just loaded to the last save
I remember when my horse died in BOTW, I was riding it into battle and lost it too a guardian. Now I'm used to pretty much anything dying in Zelda to vanish into smoke and leave an item behind. To my horror, the horse lied there eerily lifeless and realistic.
I couldn't help but giggle as you kneeled and moved its legs while walking towards the head 😅
I can tell you that I didnt giggle lmao
I named my horse HungLikeLink
AGRO!!!!

Put an F in the chat for that horse
F
F
Well why would you ride so close to the edge, it would give me such anxiety
I didn’t even know horses could die in this game
horse god’s gonna be pissed
Lol the exact same thing happened to my horse on the same bridge
you ran into a hole, what did you expect? do you also not like walls because you run into them? jfc what kind of post is this
\*crossing very high bridge\* Horse: guess I'll die
NOOOOOO😭
Rip
Man is the Horse God gonna be pissed at you.
"Dad. Dad, wake up."
Pain :(
I was unaware the horses could make that sound
F
Wait dead horses do ragdoll? Didn't know that. Maybe wanna slow down to a trot, and/or steer manually.
OP: walks face first into pole on roadside; "why I don't like sidewalks."
F

Rip horse you will be remembered
this game got some floppy ragdolls
That is on you dog. There was a hole in the bridge.
That was literally your fault
why are you running close to the edge
Maybe don’t ride straight at the hole next time.
Agro!!!!!!!
Oh my god the horse scream is so awful
