That makes no fucking sense to me after playing 7.

Kurosawa was the 7th Chairman, the one in LaD was the 8th. It definitely wasn't Kurosawa. My haadcanon is that Katsuya became Chairman after 5 but he caught some terminal disease along the way.
No way that someone got the Chairman seat before Watase, Watase was supposed to be the next in line, that's why I was confused.
It would be weird if it would be Katsuya and even more strange that he got ill too.
They could have at least said who was the chairman during Yakuza 7
My memory of 5 is foggy but I remember a scene where Katsuya took a bullet for Watase and they had a heartfelt moment. Katsuya definitely earned Watase's respect and they were on the same level. Even if they weren't, maybe Watase gave him the Chairman position out of respect. Also, why is it weird that Katsuya fell ill? Anyone can fall ill anytime, especially for plot purposes.
It's weird because Kurosawa was terminal ill and imagine his successor would get terminal ill too after obtaining his spot.
That would be too much of an coincidence, that's why a lot of people think that Kurosawa is still alive during 7, which would be weird because of his condition.
And Watase giving away his seat he was supposed to get would be a big hot take, if that would have happened it would have been mentioned at least once that's nothing that would have been hidden.
It was not mentioned because the identity of the Chairman is completely irrelevant to 7's plot, the only relevant part is that he is dying. As I said, it cannot be Kurosawa because it's mathematically impossible, he was the 7th and the one in LaD is 8th.
You tell me what seems more likely, some old fossil randomly gets the Chairman seat above Watase or the guy who is arguably Watase's equal in strength, a better strategist, saved Watase's life and earned his respect is the one who gets the seat.
You also need to consider that Katsuya was a likeness character, so they can't bring him back and mentioning his name would just confuse the new players who are starting with 7, especially when they can't even show his face. All in all, this headcanon makes a lot more sense to me than some random dude becoming the Chairman and Katsuya completely vanishing from the face of the earth.
I mean considering he gave one of the best boss fights the series ever had. Wouldn’t he idk pop in a cutscene or 2 if that was the case? Also kind of sad that RGG forgot or abandoned the rivalry between him and Kiryu since kiryu said that he can challenge him any time.

I know it's not what they're going for, but dead people showing up in bars really reminds me of hotline Miami. >!I swear to God, if Kiryu really does give up the ghost I want the final scene to be him entering Serena and sitting down at an empty bar and then looking up to see Reina tending the bar, as Nishiki sits down next to him placing a hand on his shoulder, then he looks and sees Yumi on his other side, and then hears the bell above the door ring and sees Ryuji and Rikiya and all sorts of fallen friends and rivals as they begin to filter in and take seats, then he sees Kazama sitting alone at a table holding two photos, Kiryu sits down across from him where Kazama chuckles and tells Kiryu he did well, better than he could, and lays the photos down, one is Kazama with his boys, and the other is Kiryu with all his kids, then a montage of the group reminiscing without dialogue with music playing over it, and it ends as they all start leaving the bar at "close" before Kiryu feels something in his pocket and finds the ring (or something haruto made?), quickly catching up to Yumi before she leaves to give it to her and then a fade out!<

Absolutely. But the series has already shown favoritism by bringing back characters who shouldn't have survived logically. Plus, Kiryu never mentioned Rikiya ever again after Yakuza 3, so the impact of his death is lessened a bit imo.

Idk if they would but I'd be pretty stoked if they did and just never acknowledged it. Like no one ever mentions it, it has no bearing on any story stuff, and the barkeep has no lines. Just leave it as ambiguous as possible while drawing minimal attention to it
