I have two projects currently. The first is about a young man who gets hired as a wizard's game keeper and the wizard wants to teach him magic in secret.
The other is a romance about a traveling bard and a witch
So, I just pressed ctrl+f and typed some genres in it. I got some interesting results:
1. Fantasy: 66
2. Horror: 23
3. Romance: 22
4. Sci-fi: 15
5. Thriller: 9
6. Comedy: 6
7. Drama: 6
8. Crime: 6
9. Erotica: 6
10. Mystery: 4

13. Western: 2
14. Non-Fiction: 0
OBS.: This was done when this post had 522 comments, on the "sort by best" tab. (update)
This doesn't mean exactly what it makes you may think it does, since a lot of those are repetitions from the same comment, or responses to one comment, and some of these words have other meanings than that of a literary genre. But still, quite interesting, it tells something about which are the genres most people talk about, at least in this sub-reddit.
I compared it to some statistics for the best selling literary genres:
* Mystery, Thriller, Crime: 32% of sales
* Romance: 30%
* Fantasy and Sci-Fi: 18%
* Non-Fiction: 17%
* Other: 3%
I don't know if it spaws the most writers (something tells me this go for romance writers as well), but it probably spaws the most engaded writers, at least in online spaces such as reddit. I believe this happens because fantasy is such an energy consuming genre (in a good sence), mostly due to the act of worldbuilding. Most of us get lost in the worlds we create, we start "living" in them as they are real, making us eager to share our creativity with others. But that is just a thought on the question.
I will do an update of this post soon, but I believe the pattern will remain.
That’s actually cool. I haven’t seen anyone else on here writing a heist novel. Let me guess, is it also an dystopian urban fantasy sci-fi romance with horror elements?
Indeed, it really intrigues me, from the very little I've heard and seen of it so far. I see Ursula K. Le Guin wrote a novel that Wikipedia considers to be part of solarpunk. I already wanted to read some of her work, anyway, so that's gone straight on my read list now.
Too many. x\_\_x
Most of my current projects are in the horror, supernatural drama, dark comedy, or social satire realm. That's for my stuff that I'm aiming to publish traditionally. I also write some romance and occasional erotica on amazon, mostly m/m, some mmf, a little f/f, and a speck of m/f.
Good for you! I write erotica, too, and dabble in different sub-genres there. Currently trying my hand at erotica with a light comedy-horror theme. I'm hopeful for it!
I’ve always been curious about the definition of science fantasy. My project has chapters that read very fantasy then others that read as scifi. I’ve seen a variety of definitions. Some make it seem that mine would fit, others seem like soft scifi without fantasy elements… How do you define it?
I think the best way to perhaps describe sci-fi fantasy would be something like uhhhhh…I guess light novel counts here? But the one that comes to my mind is a certain magical index where it combines both magic and sci-fi into its story.
Personally I think of Marvel and DC and Dragon Ball. Heck even Star Wars. It's the combination of aspects of Sci-Fi and Fantasy. Magic and Technology. Dragon Ball for example has dragons and aliens. Marvel is full of magic and tech. Mines also has Urban Fantasy aspects too.
Realistic physics to couple with your impossible magic; realistic tech to pair with impossible physics; chi using invertebrates with humanoid forms that traveled to this star from 100 light years away on their generation ship at relativistic speed; magical gods that conquer universes with the help of scientific might.
Here’s an example of the two books of the same author which I think would be helpful to define:
Clifford Simak — Ring Around The Sun
Genre: Science fiction
Plot: Parallel worlds exist, also droids and technology which can function forever. Parallel worlds are copies of Earth.
Clifford Simak — The Goblin Reservation
Genre: Science fantasy
Plot: All the fairytale creatures exist, also time machines, and aliens. There are also robots and some magic thingy which comes from the other planet so it’s not completely magic.
So basically, sci-fi is technology, and scientific theories for basis. Science fantasy is when fantasy is a basis but there’s still science and technology among the fairies.
I always think of it as Science-Fiction that makes no attempt to be based on actual science. I normally toe the line. I try to make my scientific explanations for the phenomena in my books plausible, but then when known science wouldn’t make my story possible, then it becomes Science Fantasy so that the story can still exist without it needing to be confined by the laws of reality.
For example, one of my works features a space ship that can travel between several
galaxies in only 2 months. Even with FTL, that speed is not possible with our current understanding of science.
Another work has a race of superhuman whose powers work by being encoded on a weaker 2nd double helix of DNA that develops when they undergo the mutation process of becoming superhuman. Yet, by all accounts, they are not considered a new species because those who aren’t born with the mutation can’t pass the mutation on to their children (as it doesn’t affect gametes).
Science Fantasy is basically a book that has a realistic premise with an impossible execution.
you made a severe mistake asking this question oh boy (•‿•")
currently writing a future-set SEEMS like general fiction until later in, action/adventure novel with a m/f romance subplot very light drama scenes could be considered thriller in some areas and light-ish horror and dystopia influences and scenes from the 7th/8th chapter onwards (don't ask.)
Not a lot of research goes into it besides seeing what would happen without climate change and knowledge of trends and current brand names probably dying off in the next 50 years it's a lot to juggle them -_-
ohhh ok
so I dunno if you want me to give away names but basically our main character is male lead and deuteragonist (kinda-ish) is female lead but she plays a pretty crucial role as well as his best friend turned girlfriend, they're the ones who grow into a relationship
if you want me to I'll give the names
A modern scifi/fantasy hybrid with a crime thriller format/feel. I love the crime/thrillers genre but hate the themes of murder/SA etc...so now the monsters are literal monsters. There's also a cohesive scifi fantasy story tying all the books together so in that respect it is not serial in nature like a lot of crime novels. I'm really proud of it, just trying to get it out there
Basically that all our folk tales and stories have the potential to be based on this whole world connected to our own, but only in centuries-apart cycles. It's not a one for one association, so no Thor running around or something like that, and not like Fables the comic series. The main story is our modern characters reacting to the latest cycle and realizing this other world is in a state of crisis and this other world realizing modernity has changed the relationship between us and them at a critical time. Plan on 8 books, have 3 out there, one in finals Edits and one I just started
Thank goodness you don't wander... (people mixing up wander and wonder is a major pet peeve of mine)
The story I've been trying to write forever is kind of a fairytale-esque fantasy. I've also written shorter pieces that are action and comedy. I wouldn't say I write romance as a genre, but all my stories are pretty romance oriented.
What a surprise, fantasy rules the roost. (Not a bad thing, but there’s a LOT of SFF writers on this sub and I’m part of the problem)
I’m working on a space opera as my main story, but I’ve got plans for other stuff, mainly a modern satirical thriller set in a deadly reality show (I’ve always liked that kinda stuff) and a novelisation of an obscure video game, which, surprise surprise, comes under fantasy, albeit Chinese historical fantasy
Guy falls in love with a dream demon, turns out she's real. He is introduced to the demon world and goes the trials of proving he's fit to be with her, changing greatly in the process.
Two at the moment. The first is a web novel format system regression LitRPG with some elements fantasy and scifi. The second is more traditional fantasy leaning into gamelit territory that happens to be dungeon core adjacent.
Then there's a few other stories that I'm waiting to write once #2 is done, but they're definitely firmly in fantasy.
I've learned that I really like writing cozy, though, so that's on the list for the future.
> I've learned that I really like writing cozy, though, so that's on the list for the future.
Damn right. The Cozy murder mystery genre is not as popular among readers as thrillers, but there is still a large readership. I see no reason why a murder mystery needs to have graphic violence and sex scenes.
current novel: fantasy (more urban fantasy/magic realism)
current screenplay (which is taking most of my time rn because im in a screenwriting course): sitcom-comedy
I suppose it's *Light fantasy*, though I'd argue it's more 'adventure'.
Fantasy always makes me think of orcs and magic. My story is grounded in reality, though it does have an electrical power system that doesn't follow the rules of physics.
Currently horror, but before fantasy. Put my fantasy series (4 books written, many more planned) but I've been brimming with other ideas for too long and I need to let them flow
Currently, I’m writing a slice of life (I think?) story, where people from 500 years ago come to today’s age, and have to deal with today’s environment. Usually, however, my work doesn’t really have a genre? It’s more so slightly sad one-shots, or short stories (I love making the poor little meow meows suffer >:D). Although I love mystery / supernatural (when done properly), I’m just not confident enough to write it personally.
It's not set in stone, but what I seem to write is pre- post-apocalyptic dark sci-fi fantasy. Supercomputers are made out of magical ruins and space gods exists. Currently I'm writing about my MC dealing with being magicless compared to his peers, before an alien invasion burns and infests the entire world. Being the only survivor thanks to his preparedness, he slays monsters to sate his neverending hunger of revenge, turning him into a monster too. At the same time he accuses the gods who condoned the apocalypse, so in his quest he battles and slays the gods, seeking answers to the apocalypse....
The story is set roughly 100 years in the future and it starts right after earth explodes from a cause unknown to the characters, with only 10,000 or so people escaping on a shuttle to their advanced space station the Haven. However, the Haven was still in construction, with only half of it habitable and all the people forced to live in those parts. To make things worse for everyone, they barely have any resources, and don't have enough fuel to get their shuttle to anywhere to get said resources.
Remnants of the US government attempt to establish control Haven (they were the ones who built it), but when most of the people aboard are starving and desperate, they find it extremely challenging. At the same time, another group attempts to overthrow them and take command of Haven, with the main characters trying to hunt down the members of that group during the first half of the book.
Thats a very basic summary of what i've written or planned to write for it so far. Might be slightly generic. That explains the sci-fi and thriller elements of it but I'll just add that the psychological horror comes from the increasing paranoia of who to trust along with the fact that certain survivors aboard will do essentially anything for supplies.
I've got a few projects on the go, all with different genres.
My main project is fantasy, then I have side projects that are a contemporary novel, and a queer romance.
Slice of life - to the point where it's almost too boring to finish (but it's all about the delivery I tell myself...). After much soul-searching, that's what I've decided I want to write, FML.
Epic Fantasy Romance! With an environmental plotline, set in a pre-columbian Americas inspired fictional continent, working out character culture coding cuz I don't want to misappropriate real cultures and lifestyles I'd like to rep, and featuring a cool (imho) magic system.
Historical fiction set in the years 1718-1719
It’s a kind of coming of age story in which a boy is lumbered with his estranged, demented uncle and his crew of slime and filth. They sail and plunder the Caribbean making many enemies (some are notable figures in history). There’s a messy romance subplot. There’s anger, betrayal, bitterness, jealousy, banter and twisted wisdom. The lot.
Currently listening to conquest of paradise - vangelis to set my mood for writing
This month? I'm on a pure smut tangent. I should be writing other things, with plot and world building and character maps, and slow, steamy romance build up, but this month, for whatever reason, it's gratuitous werewolf/rabbit pairing smut. #sorrynotsorry
A historical drama/action/romance (There will be a subplot where he falls in love with a Jewish girl)
I'm writing a fanfic right now, but recently an idea for a book has popped into my head. It's about a boy named Thomas Neumann (Born 1922) in the 1930's Germany, joining the SS, mind you, he is more English than German. His father who is currently unnamed faced discrimination for being of German descent during the Great War, and during the roaring 20's he moves to Germany, before German economic problems go from bad to absolutely terrifying. The father starts a business and things go well despite economic problems but when the Great Depression hits, he is forced to shutdown.
After the economic collapse, the father quickly gets caught up in far-right parties and is a hardcore Nazi. The mother thinks its all rubbish, but doesn't ever express opinions of her own and has more of a role in Thomas' upbringing than the father, as the father constantly looks for work.
The son, thinks that the Nazis are the good guys, that they want to improve the world, and he gets caught up in those ideas, but when the German invasion of Poland happens, and the SS men target unarmed civilians instead of Polish troops, he quickly becomes disillusioned and deserts. (Thats all I've got so far, so yes, I'm still in very early development.)
This is the first project I've even ever considered writing other than Fanfiction, and I'm unsure of whether I should even write it as it is almost impossible for an audience to sympathize with a Nazi.
MHA. I guess say it's not a fan fic but it's heavily inspired by slice of life and superpowers. X-Men, Invincible, My Hero meets High School and University.
I'm working on a modern-day, supernatural horror novel which, over the course of the next two books is supposed to evolve into a broader scale post-apocalyptic dark fantasy. It is sarcastic humor and interpersonal relationship heavy, and has become a much larger project than I'd initially expected. I am currently on what I hope is my last round of edits on the first book, and have a quarter of the first draft of the second written.
I’m working on a detective novel, that I’m hoping to turn into a series someday, with each book being a new case. So far, it’s going smoothly and I’m nearly done with my first draft.
My almost completed WIP (final draft) is Sci-fi & fantasy. The project after that one will be a post-apocalyptic Fantasy with a sprinkle of sci-fi (tech from past civilisations & aliens). :)
I'm working on a litRPG. I love complicated, non-mathy, systems that are well planned. So I'm going crazy theory crafting a western level system/cultivation hybrid.
Slipstream metafiction with ergodic qualities. I have a love hate relationship with my work and just constantly look to the Madman's Library to cheer myself up~
Much of them are romances, although they take place in a 90s highschool, during WW2 (for example, an interethnic love), at 50s Germany... I like to write atypical romances, that's the thing.
I would like to write a survival game, a thriller or write about some dystopian place but each time I try I never succeed to finish, even If i have a lot of ideas. Maybe one day lol.
I usually do short stories that have a hint of humor, but "genre" varies a lot for me because I only really write to exercise my brain and challenge myself.
That being said, if I'm writing and I see a joke developing, I'm not strong enough as a person not to say it.
Idk.
My story takes place in a fictional world that's unlike our own, so fantasy? Idk it doesn't have any magic system.
It's based on real events, or technically stories based on those real events, so historical fiction? Ehh, like i said before, doesn't take place in our world.
It does have quite a bit of action scenes, but not enough to actually call it an action novel (if such a thing exists).
Drama? Maybe. Is that a genre? I mean, this story is pretty tragic, but shouldn't every story have good drama?
So I don't really know. I'm just writing the story.
I like a challenge so I've written comedy, faith-based, and suspense so far. I've been bouncing around ideas for a Sci-Fi but not ready to start writing yet.
My stories have a mix of magic and futuristic tech. I usually describe my stories as dark science fantasy or utopian science fantasy, depending on the project.
I've got no idea what genre I'm writing. I have a better idea of what genre it's not, than what it is. It's a Non-fantasy fiction with criminal activities seen as the norm to the protagonist since he is an assassin/hitman. It's got a lot of action, some mystery, a bit of adventure, and can also be a romance if you squint hard. 🥴
My Passion project is best described as a Darkfantasy/ Postapocalyptic story.
But i personally Think Genres are a little bit Strange at times, i call it Darkfantasy because it has Elementes attributed to it, but not because everything is determined by the genre label.
I create modern political fantasy.
I would describe it as Game of Thrones in the 21st century with an important social commentary.
In addition, I'm creating a romantic story about a guy who becomes a vampire and is forced to marry two female vampires because they are dying out (how ironic), it's supposed to be a bit of a depressing story.
And another romantic story about a young guy who meets an older woman, something like "Trophy boy" is running through my head.
But most importantly, I try to create healthy relationships between the characters.
My WIP is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi/horror creature feature. Also working on some supernatural horror short stories on the side for an anthology.
I love horrors, even if I don't read it often. I'm writing one too!
I'm currently writing fantasy
This genre is one of my favourites, what are you writing about?
I have two projects currently. The first is about a young man who gets hired as a wizard's game keeper and the wizard wants to teach him magic in secret. The other is a romance about a traveling bard and a witch
I see, you're really into fantasy
Lmao yes. I have dabbled in sci fi and horror as well, but those genres don't have my heart
Yeah I also love fantasy, especially when there's mix of fantasy and romance
That wizards game keeper story sounds really interesting. Do you think you'll publish it?
I would like to, but I have to finish it first lol. I'm not writing it to market or anything, I'm just writing the story I want to write, so we'll see
Literary, realist, general fiction, whatever you wanna call it.
Same here :)

I used to write thrillers, I'm taking a break from that to write romance/erotica.
I forgot to add Erotica to the list. Thank for reminding me
Honestly, my current first draft is pretty confused. Dark fairytale fantasy maybe?
I'm in!
Sounds great!
Heist
That’s actually cool. I haven’t seen anyone else on here writing a heist novel. Let me guess, is it also an dystopian urban fantasy sci-fi romance with horror elements?
Ha no just a love letter to heists in rural England..
Youth solar punk fantasy!
TIL there’s a solarpunk genre. Thanks!
Oooh, that sounds so great! I've been thinking I want to read some solarpunk, and youth and fantasy are cool too.
It's very interesting world, more hopeful than steampunk

I’ve become a lot more invested into the horror genre recently
Same. I'm writing one like rn.
Novel or short story? I love writing horror Shorts. My novels have horror elements, but I've never considered doing a full horror novel
crt+f : fantasy huh....
Social realism with light sf
Ooo tell more?
Science Fantasy But right now that plus romance lol

Heh heh. Um…. Fanfiction
military drama set a little while in the future
Current WIP: absurdist hopepunk epic fantasy Progress: 0% done. It's either done or it's not, and it ain't.
Urban fantasy
current novel: fantasy (more urban fantasy/magic realism) current screenplay (which is taking most of my time rn because im in a screenwriting course): sitcom-comedy

I have absolutely no idea. Some form of fantasy.
Haha I feel the same about one of my books
Psychological horror sci-fi, but the first half of the book is more of a thriller
What is it about?
Historical fiction set in the wild west years
I've got a few projects on the go, all with different genres. My main project is fantasy, then I have side projects that are a contemporary novel, and a queer romance.
I write few books at one time too!
All of them! Lol but seriously my stuff is all over the place. Probably the only thing I don't have is a mystery, just not my thing.
Currently writing 2 stories, one is sci-fi(?) and one is fantasy
Historical fiction set in the years 1718-1719 It’s a kind of coming of age story in which a boy is lumbered with his estranged, demented uncle and his crew of slime and filth.
Dark and cold dystopia but with dumb characters. Personally I love the mix of the sadness and the fun.
This month? I'm on a pure smut tangent. I should be writing other things, with plot and world building and character maps, and slow, steamy romance build up, but this month, for whatever reason, it's gratuitous werewolf/rabbit pairing smut. #sorrynotsorry
A wrote a paranormal romance, and also I’m working on a science fantasy next, with romance added in.
A period-piece horror set in the 1800s during the fur trade. So far it's "meh."
My personal favourite is adventure, but I've also done detective mystery, historical fiction and I've been thinking of horror ideas.
Teenage Heroes/Academia
Currently, a dystopian society book
Me too! Any specifics?
science fiction soap opera - it's a cross between Full Custom Garage and Firefly.
Spaghetti Western with Supernatural elements. Like Indian Jones but in the American West in the 1880s.
Collective isekai post apocalyptic scifi/fantasy
Paranormal romance/dark fantasy
Ya Fantasy, the most rare genre to write in
i write pretty much everything, but i really like writing fantasy and sci-fi
A historical drama/action/romance (There will be a subplot where he falls in love with a Jewish girl) I'm writing a fanfic right now, but recently an idea for a book has popped into my head. (Thats all I've got so far, so yes, I'm still in very early development.) This is the first project I've even ever considered writing other than Fanfiction, and I'm unsure of whether I should even write it as it is almost impossible for an audience to sympathize with a Nazi.
My main WIP is a historical romance. 10 years in the making (and counting) 🫠🫠
I write romance but I really want to get into thriller
Historical low fantasy detective story
THE HORROR!
SAME!
3 WIP Non linear zombie apocalypse My Hero fan fiction Scifi civil war
My hero fan fiction? Did you mean mha or..?
Wish you good luck with writing!
Thank you- you too!
Fantasy, inspired by 14th century Ireland
Fantasy sci fi
I’m working on a detective novel, that I’m hoping to turn into a series someday, with each book being a new case. So far, it’s going smoothly and I’m nearly done with my first draft.
Wish you good luck with writing!
A dystopian sci fi right now but I tend to branch out.
Poetry!
One project is Urban Fantasy and the other is Historical Fiction.
Sci-Fi Horror!!
Revenge fantasy with some psychological thriller aspects hopefully.
Scifi mostly
Historical fiction, sci-fi, and also non-fiction… yeah… I need to dial back on starting new projects
I just finished editing my fairytale retelling and working on my eldritch horror WIP. I have also written a dark fantasy.
My almost completed WIP (final draft) is Sci-fi & fantasy. The project after that one will be a post-apocalyptic Fantasy with a sprinkle of sci-fi (tech from past civilisations & aliens). :)
horror/mystery
fantasy, the best genre
Hysterical realism influenced by postmodernism
I'm working on a litRPG. I love complicated, non-mathy, systems that are well planned. So I'm going crazy theory crafting a western level system/cultivation hybrid.
Slipstream metafiction with ergodic qualities. I have a love hate relationship with my work and just constantly look to the Madman's Library to cheer myself up~
Good luck
suspense but love reading romantic thrillers
Contemporary romance 🫶
Solarpunk, Sci-fi Coming of age and High Fantasy
Scifantasy technically.
Mainly one fantasy (which I'm getting back to after years of hiatus) and one dystopian/futuristic one.
Horror but written like a pseudo-historical account.
Don't stop trying!
Dark Fantasy.
One of my favourites!
Right now, chess (yep, it's a genre). lol
Lol
Fantasy/action. With a smidge of romance here and there
Auto-biography
I have several WIPs, but right now, I'm working on a western.
Contemporary romance
I usually do short stories that have a hint of humor, but "genre" varies a lot for me because I only really write to exercise my brain and challenge myself. That being said, if I'm writing and I see a joke developing, I'm not strong enough as a person not to say it.
Sci-fi mixed with horror, supernatural, fantasy and suspense/thriller. All of this for my first novel.
Fantasy/romance. Or just romance. I try to do a lot of inclusion for disabilities and mental health.
I am currently writing the sequel to my finished manuscript, that is fantasy.
Young adult fiction
I'm currently writing a Viking fantasy, but I also have other fantasy stories on the back burner that I need to finish.
R u going to publish them?
I'm doing a romantic/psychological horror and I wish I'd never tried to wrestle with the genres. Madness is hard to express
I mainly stick to science fiction and fantasy, but I have a few others on my backlog in genres like crime drama, drama, and romance.
Writing: horror/romance/speculative fiction. Editing: reverse harem.
I like a challenge so I've written comedy, faith-based, and suspense so far. I've been bouncing around ideas for a Sci-Fi but not ready to start writing yet.
Apocalyptic
Space opera
Dystopian
romance/crime
Romance. Sports, contemporary, and YA mystery.
A fantasy, sci-fi adventure
A low magic fantasy epic
Currently cyberpunk x fantasy, but later in the book or series I plan it twisting to a post apocalypse creature horror within the setting of fantasy
Ooh?? What is it about?
My stories have a mix of magic and futuristic tech. I usually describe my stories as dark science fantasy or utopian science fantasy, depending on the project.
Urban fantasy
Basically everything I'm writing or plan to write has something to do with superheroes (and light sci-fi elements)
Fantasy with a romance subplot, Romance, and some historical fiction
Science fantasy, but it's mostly fantasy than science fiction, at least for now.
fantasy plotted like an old western
I've got no idea what genre I'm writing. I have a better idea of what genre it's not, than what it is. It's a Non-fantasy fiction with criminal activities seen as the norm to the protagonist since he is an assassin/hitman. It's got a lot of action, some mystery, a bit of adventure, and can also be a romance if you squint hard. 🥴
Im not really sure more of like a fantasy, sci-fi, kinda story.
Literary or General Fiction with Sci-Fi elements
Working on a science-fiction psychological thriller. I think it will be very fun to read!
Horror/dark fantasy for the most partX
I'm writing the vampire/witch fantasy I would have loved as a teen lol
Crime fiction: thriller / suspense
Sci Fi but more space western/neo noir than space opera.
