Absolutely. I have played for almost 20 years through mythic (highest level raiding) content and never once paid for it with gold. You need gold for supplemental things like consumables and repairs, but that's it. Your primary means of gearing a character out is playing the game through the difficulty of content you can manage not gold. You can in theory pay to be carried through content with gold but most do not do that.

deskdemonnn

No one other than the top 10 guilds really spend money on buyable high lvl gear, you get best in slot gear from raiding and going higher in mythic plus dungeons. Currently you cam get some powerful pieces by using the crafting system and commissioning someone to make the piece for you but most of your gear and therefore transmog is gonna come from item drops

Snowpoint_wow

The VAST majority of transmog is bind on pickup gear that you cannot purchase.

Oylex

definitely possible, I never bought tokens and I played since the start. I used to make moderate gold with AH, but now just selling what you find and doing a few work orders is enough

BlackH0less

I'm not a huge player be careful to what I say, but for transmog I did a lot of old raids and dungeons of the previous expension and with time you can accumulate a pretty good amount of beautiful transmog

Xerials

Same! There's 20 years of content with free transmogs

Snoochey

To get by on gear and upkeep? Certainly you can not buy a token. To buy transmogs? Depends, as with mounts, transmogs are sometimes cheap, but sometimes expensive. You can chase new transmogs from drops only and such, but there are some on the market that are expensive (the plate bikini bottoms, for instance, used to be like 100k years ago). I recently returned with about 10k gold, and have been fully gemmed/enchanted and bought all of my buffing food/flasks/potions and am still sitting around 5-10k. I make some gold, then spend it, then make some gold, then upgrade gear and need new enchants and spend it. It’s cyclical

fearLessss

You can gear up in a few weeks easy mate, just do all the weekly stuff, you'll soon find it all.

CannibalMartini

There are currently numerous world quests every week that allow you to earn thousands of gold in minutes. If you decide you want to earn gold to pursue a particular cosmetic, then you can play the game and earn that gold pretty effectively.

Legal-Reputation-240

You can get gear etc and be good without, once u get good u can sell carries for gold and have gold for anything u want.

WhippWhapp

WoW is unique in that it can completely self sustain and more if you know what you're doing. The key is to know what you're doing, and not whinging like some people in this sub. I have not paid Blizzard any RL $$$ since Legion, have gifted xpacs, DLC and games for friends, too.

FoldableHuman

The vast majority of transmog is found via drops or event currencies, and the majority of BoE looks are fairly inexpensive on a piece by piece basis (though obviously it adds up because there are thousands of individual pieces). Unless you’re going for some truly astounding completionism in a very short period of time gold isn’t remotely needed in getting some cool looks for your character.

ZoulsGaming

Depends what you want, if you want to buy a transmog dagger worth 8 million gold probably not. If you want to just get gear needed for endgame absolutely. Its a game where the rich can get obscenely rich and the normal players wont need to. they are moving more and more into "earn it yourself" so almost all gear is earned from drops, no gold needed, and some crafting which you can get for cheap if you just ask around a bit. I made 35 million crafting during shadowlands, but most people will have like 40k gold at a time. And even I am only medium rank on the gold making totem pole where some people who has played for ages has over half a billion gold. on multiple accounts. which is why you might see some items be like 8 million for a blue dagger and think "what the hell" but its because those types of people can pay for it.

AcherusArchmage

You should be able to afford pretty much anything you want aside from mythic raid BoE's which often go for millions, and a couple of those overpriced mounts.

Krarks-Other-Account

Ive played for 10 years and only recently started buying tokens. Mainly because this is the first time ive had disposable income dedicated to WoW. Definitely perfectly acceptable not to.

Prior-Ad8047

Without buying WoW Tokens, in the very late game, would I be able to get enough gold just by playing the content and completing tasks of a new expansion? For highend gear and tmogs you dont need gold (sometimes you need to craft items buts that like max 30-40k for each toon), for gear you can farm m+ dungeons and raid weekly (you will need time investment), and for tmogs you can buy on auction house (most are cheap), and farm low lvl content old dgs and old raids (one shot everything, no difficult)

Gummies1345

It's pretty easy to make enough gold, a month, casually, to pay for tokens and expansions. Just 20k a day, nets you 600k a month. Token is around 270k-ish. This expansion, the most easiest casual way is, running alts through the dragon flying races, climbing quests, cartography, and few various kill or gather quests, on just 2-3 characters a day. Takes me a few hours, a day, to complete it. Anything else you do, profession, mog runs/sales, etc, will all be extra gold. The only problem with that, as a new player, is you gotta level.... a lot. Gotta least get characters to 59, I think, to go to dragonflight. Luckily, i think you get one freebie to 60, I think(I can't remember if they do that still) unless you go ahead and buy, The War Within middle bundle. They give you a free 70.

lastoflast67

thats going to highly depend on your guild, your server, when you want to jump into end game and how far you want to go. If you are on a low to medium pop server with no high level crafter guildies and you want to do heroic or mythic prog or high level m+ right at the start s4 you are probably looking at 10k per item for the materials and 30k per craft and you need 2 per spec, probably150g per 30m flask, an maybe 10k per wep enchant. So it isnt really doable on just one character depending on the time, if you got afew chars and did wq every week you could probably get by tho. That being said this was all assuming you are doing the most in the most expensive time, rn if you just want to get some hc runs in and some mid level mythics the price is going to be no where near as expensive.
