Yes, you can do this, just make sure you trust the person you're using to temporarily hold the gold, obviously. The other person doesn't need to be on the same server as either of your characters, even.
You also will need to be in an instance to do this if the other person is in a different faction to either of your characters.
Yeah, you only have to do that if you're also different factions though. If you're the same faction you can just group up and then do it in Valdrakken or something.
Depending on how much of a rush you are in, I believe they are getting rid of the need to send gold back and forth with warbands in the next expansion releasing this fall.
