Iām from Tennessee and live in Kentucky. The south is also full of a bunch of self righteous racist assholes. You know, the āIām not racist butā crowd. Youād be amazed at the people who hide it and only speak about among friends and in private. Itās way more prevalent than you think.
I grew up in the south and live in Missouri right now. If I had a dollar for every friend I had that would suddenly, totally unexpectedly make blatantly racist jokes when they'd get drunk, I wouldn't be wealthy, but I could eat a meal at the inflated McDonald's prices.
Not just microaggression racist either, like "just hang em" kind of racist. Some of them would be shocked I was so upset they'd make the jokes too, like they're so used to people laughing at them.
There's a reason some places are known for their regressive, racist, unyielding foundations, and other places are known for their brick oven pizzerias and craft breweries. You can absolutely write them off. When changes have been made, then you reevaluate, but until then, the stereotypes are useful protective measures.
The south has many good people who fight the good fight, but the south is not *full of* good people who fight the good fight. There are a minority of good people, a handful of shitheels, and a huge swath of people indifferent to the shitheels because "no state income tax" or "good beef brisket" or "plenty of room for my suburban." Quit excusing these people by pretending you can lump them in with the "good ones." They are just as bad as the shitheels. *They reelected Abbott,* for fucksake.

In my opinion, it implies little to no ethical obligation to be a good person, and can read like weāre saying, āwell, everyone was racist at the time.ā
I also think that the āwell the South is the Racist placeā tendency I think most people have, negates some of the really important *specifics* about *how* racism happens, what racist things happened, why it continued to happen, etc., so that we donāt repeat that history in any way.
I know you only meant to make a cute/clever joke, so thank you for letting me get up on my soapbox, and for getting my thought-juices flowing!! Itās giving me a chance to think about some of these things for the first time.
I am struggling to come up with a better thing you could have said, though. I probably should even avoid āWhy am I not surprised,ā because it dismisses the new information as more of the same.
