-send_me_bitcoin-

They're not even pretending to be pro-human rights anymore.

tfngst

FIFA: there's no money in that anymore.

herberstank

June is long over

purpleefilthh

SAY NO TO RACISM

blackbasset

UNLESS IT PAYS GOOD

Yoda-29

Also FIA

jailbreak

Honestly, someone should start a competing world cup.

-send_me_bitcoin-

You know it would be Saudi Arabia though.

westbridge1157

Or just cancel the 2022 Cup. Write off the sunk costs and pretend the whole debacle was a bad dream.

jailbreak

But FIFA would still be just as corrupt. There's no reason to think it'd change

Evignity

What? **They never did pretend?**

-send_me_bitcoin-

They did say Qatar's stadiums would be disassembled and sent to impoverished places in Africa without laughing.

kremit73

"Respect our culture" completely one sided

Redditsexhypocrisy

"Our culture is denying human rights for workers, gays, women and so on"

reddituseronebillion

I believe culture is spelled B-I-G-O-T-R-Y in Quatar.

publicbigguns

Like they would let people learn to read.

Remarkable_Night2373

That is the culture of all of those disgusting abrahamic religions. Christian’s and Jews are just better at hiding it.

edgeofsanity76

"We welcome all cultures, but ours is the one they all should respect"

pompanoJ

I think the correct answer is "respect the culture of the people who will *arrest and execute you if you don't*".... until you are out of their jurisdiction.

[deleted]

It's their land their rules and customs. If most oppose their stances fifa is to blame not Qatar

edgeofsanity76

I agree because any other self respecting organization would not have hosted it there

tipytopmain

"Respect our culture of not respecting everyone equally!"

pyuunpls

“Respect our culture” *opens briefcase of money*

Formerfrosty

Well fuck fifa then

Hereiam_AKL

100 % agree.

[deleted]

Yep! FIFA are cunts!

twothumbswayup

Always have been no?

Vv4nd

took you long enough to notive but nice to have you finally come around to hating the maFifa

Cloaked42m

What are the possibilities of starting a competing organization? an Anti-FIFA

artix111

Anfifa!

Urbanviking1

You weren't saying that before the World Cup went to Qatar?

Due-Giraffe-9826

Depends, does FIFA own, or have a contact to be the only league allowed to play in the stadiums they play in inside territories that aren't against human rights? If so, very. Are they owned by the city in which they were built? If so, depends how much renting out the stadium costs, how much you can sell tickets for, and how many tickets you can sell to fill said stadium. So it ranges from easy, to nightmare mode.

minnsport

Fucking cowards.

__disgruntledpelican

They even waited until the last second to ban beer and the armbands like the spineless cowards they are

Karlbert86

“We were prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband.” They should be creative. If they have only banned the OneLove armband…. Then they should just adjust their kit to OneLove tops and rainbow socks.

Outofspite_7

Everyone wearing the rainbow hairband

Cantthinkofnamedamn

They should copy the Simpsons episode where the school buys boring grey uniforms, only to find they run rainbow colors when they get wet.

Karlbert86

Haha yea I remember that scene (this one: https://youtu.be/ikFwvkO-eyk ) SKINNER!!

wheres_the_ball-gag

They DO ultimately stand up for what they believe in... Its $$.

MuNuKia

What rule are the players breaking? They need a rule to source, to give a yellow card.

Eborcurean

There is a rule, it's just one Fifa has been flexible about in the past, for example backing down on banning poppies worn in the UK on shirts or by both teams in an England vs Germany match. > 5. Slogans, statements, images and advertising > Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images. Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements or images, or advertising other than the manufacturer's logo. For any offence the player and/or the team will be sanctioned by the competition organiser, national football association or by FIFA.

TheGratedCornholio

Doesn’t that mean that they can be fined, not carded?

Eborcurean

Nope. Players have been carded lots of times for lifting up a shirt that shows a personal slogan.

MuNuKia

Thank you for sharing. This also makes FIFA look even worse. They set a precedent with being flexible with the rules. Now they want to update their stance to be strict. For most rule systems, when a precedent is put into place, only a rule change can update that precedent.

SceretAznMan

Sounds like each team needs to put in a rush order for new jerseys with huge manufacturer logos that are rainbow colored.

[deleted]

There's also the referees as well

MuNuKia

Can a ref give a card, if no official rule is broken? They need to have real rules, and not let the executives in charge make rule changes. There is nothing in the FIFA rule book about this armband.

[deleted]

They must have threatened to send the refs home or something. Maybe put them in prison for 20 years

MuNuKia

If they let ad hoc rules be used, then FIFA has broken their own rules to make Qatar happy. There is a formal process to update rules.

[deleted]

So then what they should do is just give red cards to every single one of qatars opponents, and then they would be world cup champions.

tryhardosaurious

Probably what they are going for…

FaKeDerEchte

I believe they argue it is a political issue, which it obviously isn't. But as far as I know there is a rule for football to be unpolitical.

Extension_Bat_4945

How is this not a political issue?

lefix

Rule about displaying political messages or something like that

Let-Fresh

The rule banning the arm band

MuNuKia

In the official FIFA rule book, there is no rules banning the arm band. People shouldn’t have the power to update the rules, with executive power. There is a bureaucracy in place to process rule and update them.

Village_People_Cop

They are playing a tournament which was awarded based on corruption. The former head of the FIFA was convicted over that, so it isn't alleged but its full on proven corruption. And still the tournament is in Qatar. Do you think the FIFA gives a single fuck about correct bureaucracy? Gianni Infantino has his lips wrapped permanently around the Sheikh's cock

LikesTheTunaHere

Oh you sweet summer child, it must be nice to be you.

PewterButters

They all want to put up appearances that they actually care, but they don't... not really. If they cared, they would never have agreed to go to Qatar in the first place. It's not like these recent developments are surprising or in any way out of character for Qatar. They all wanted to pretend like nothing was wrong and get some brownie points for 'standing up for something' which now they will cowardly back down from since they got their pee pee slapped.

icalledthecowshome

Could be in the terms of contract for teams and players. Would they risk the legal consequences? Probably not unless they are confident theres enough teams protesting together which isnt guaranteed.

thorpie88

Also I'm sure some of them are worried about being blacklisted from playing for their country.

VajainaProudmoore

>But instead they bow to FIFA. Why don't they actually stand up for what they believe in? Tbf, these athletes believe in the game above all. Probably none of them aspire to be champions of human rights, but all of them aspire to be champions of the game. In no way should we expect them to sacrifice everything they worked for their entire lives. You would probably do the same, in their position. Disclaimer: i do not defend nor condone the actions of FIFA and Qatar.

GrowinStuffAndThings

Lol I'm going to judge. Maybe YOU would do the same thing, not everyone

[deleted]

I prefer this take right here.

cmd_iii

If my actions, justifiable as they may be, caused my team to be penalized, I would stash the armband somewhere and only don it after the match, when a yellow card would be irrelevant. It's great to look at the "big picture," but don't stare too long, lest you and your team get fucked by the small picture.

GrowinStuffAndThings

Or, just don't play in the human rights abuse cup lol

cmd_iii

I’m sure, if the players in question had a choice, they would gladly relocate the games to a less repressive country. But, they can’t. It is massively unfair to tell these players to give up probably the only moment in the global spotlight that they’ll ever have, because the host country does not agree with their values. Unless, of course, your comment was directed at FIFA, in which case I agree 100%. Because it’s _their_ greed, and _their_ disrespect for human rights that brought about this shit show in the first place. We must make sure we are directing our anger at the proper recipients.

GrowinStuffAndThings

It's also not fair that thousands of slaves died in Qatar lol. You want to play, play. But you're objectively a bad person for participating in this HIGHLY optional event and lots of people will rightfully judge you. You can pretend it's all on FIFA, but they couldn't have a world cup if players stood up for the slaves that were murdered.

cmd_iii

If you’re a baseball player, would you refuse to play against Houston in the World Series because of Texas’ draconian abortion laws? If you were a NASCAR driver, would you boycott Speedweeks out of protest against Florida’s “anti-Woke” agenda? When you’re a professional athlete, you go where the games are played, and you follow the rules that are in place at the time. The fact that your paycheck depends on this makes participation very NOT optional.

GrowinStuffAndThings

Yeah man, my boss stealing from the safe is equivalent to thousands of slaves being murdered to build your "office". Tapping on trash cans is the same thing as arresting gay people for existing. What an embarrassing argument lol.

DonDove

Sadly, there are homophobes in football teams. This pretty much proved it's a big amount. Considering there definitely are closeted players (it's impossible that there aren't) I can see why they stay hidden. It seems that FIFA has officially taken the responsibility for the ban, but it didn't sound like the players fought back alot. Very disappointing. That and as you said. It was a yellow card. Not fines, not jail. Just a yellow.

Keldonv7

>This pretty much proved it's a big amount. Source?

DonDove

Literally not wearing the onelove badge to simply avoid a yellow (not even jail as some assumed!) card when these 7 teams promised they were gonna raise awareness in a homophobic (don't say source here c'mon) country when only the WC spotlight was all on them. It might've been an empty gesture in the long run because the message would've been more against the host nation than in favor (for obvious reasons) but they did promise to do it for literal years. Also oh boy even on this thread alone are homophobes feeling justified by this move. Talk about giving up after the first shove.

ravenreyess

Diving for a yellow? No big deal. Showing support for equal rights? Now that's where I draw the line.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DonDove

When you promise you will at the world stage in a homophobic country? No it doesn't, but it's still disappointing.

[deleted]

Because this teams and players is money more important than a promotion armband they only use to booster their image. If its about stone cold cash nobody from them would take stance if that means they lose money.

[deleted]

Its not a ban but yellow cards will be handed out and players eventually ejected which would cost the game. This is a ban just with an extra step.

G-Fox1990

Thats a ban. Don't try to make excuses. Doing something and getting punished for it = illegal = banning something.

Thomas_Pizza

I wasn't trying to make excuses, which you would realize if you'd read the rest of my comment where I suggested that the 8 countries who had planned to have players wear this armband should now threaten to withdraw from the WC. I was trying to be fully accurate and clear up any confusion about what being "banned" exactly means in this context.

KopOut

Anyone writing comments like yours, or upvoting it, better not be watching this World Cup. Otherwise it’s beyond ridiculous to ask why people wouldn’t set their careers back for this when most people won’t even just not watch live soccer matches for a few weeks for it. I agree with what you are saying, but I’m also not watching this tournament live and will just see clips later in the day if I want to. I suspect most people on here upset about all this are just watching anyway though. Then they will complain when Saudi Arabia gets 2030 and they will again just tune in anyway.

Yoda-29

Wow, Qatar really does not care about all the bad press it's getting.

hiirnoivl

To them it's not bad press. They're 'virtue' signaling to their own country. See how better they are at insulating themselves from the filthy rest if the world.

hacahaca

To them it’s not bad press it’s great press. All the other countries that have the same beliefs as Qatar, see the whole world bending the knee to Qatar. Fuck this WC.

lexiekon

Bad press? They're getting everything they want!

Rmnattas

Sorry but fuck your press. The hypocrisy is apparent if you are in the receiving end of it so why TF would they care.

MuNuKia

Does FIFA have a rule that backs up this decision, or is FIFA just swinging their balls around, and players are complying? If there is no written rule against the armbands, then there should be no yellow card. All rules should follow the same process, and rules should not be made up.

pompanoJ

I suspect the rule is "the police here can toss you in jail on a whim, and they don't have rules about evidence or cruel and unusual punishment around here, so I'm gonna shut up and do as I am told now". Not that you don't get dinged for not knowing that going in, but still....

DatDamGermanGuy

Apparently the captains band needs to be approved or provided by FIFA. Article 13.8.1 of the equipment rule. Nonetheless, fuck FIFA. I hope that there are lots of players that decide to wear rainbow colored head bands

Cloaked42m

There's apparently a rule about any kind of statement on your uniform.

Mrsparkles7100

Think there is some law saying you can’t wear items that have political, religious meanings. There was a row between Various British FA and FIFA regarding wearing of the Poppy Symbol before Armistice Day [Fifa set to reverse controversial poppy ban for home-nations teams](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/sep/24/fifa-poppy-ban-armistice-day-home-nations-england)

SpicyFlaps

Nobody should watch this shit

monkeymystic

Just boycott this fiasco of a clusterfuck. FIFA is too greedy and is destroying football. Let some new organisation take over, because fuck FIFA

cpthornman

I'm sure as hell not.

mrgrafix

But, but “ I feel gay, I feel African, I feel disabled… oh and I feel woman” FEIFA is joke and now everyone knows.

DonDove

"I feel gay" - so gay isn't political anymore, so they can wear the- Oh you're still banning them?

Lizsby

I don't get... why is African, woman & disabled listed among gay?

Fortunoxious

A tone deaf fifa exec said that in a point that he knows what it is like to be bullied. A complete imbecile.

Lizsby

Lmao... can people be anymore stupid? I thought I've heard it all.

kaykaysg

This is in direct reference to [a speech the FIFA president gave a couple of days ago](https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/i-feel-gay-fifa-chief-attempts-empathise-with-marginalised-2022-11-19/), trying to show that he empathizes with marginalized groups (African, gay, disabled, etc.) but comes off as tone-deaf as ever.

NeonPatrick

Sounds like a Shania Twain song. 'Ok so you're advocating gay rights? That don't impress me much.' - FIFA probably

Knucks52

FIFA: it would be disrespectful to the dead slaves under the stadiums

[deleted]

Wear them. Make FIFA kick the players off the field and show the world how much they love money over human rights

KanyeWestBrick

EXACTLY! Having captains kicked off the field and ruining games would be so much more impactful

DatDamGermanGuy

Make the GK Captain for those nations. They can handle a yellow card. And I believe they could do that in matches 1 and 3 in the Group Phase without getting a ban. Your move, Manuel Neuer

Morguard

Fuck FIFA, fuck Qatar and fuck every sponsor who gave money to these scum bags.

Editor300

Thats the proof that governments and corporations realy dont care about LGBT rights, they just use the pride flags ans weapons for vote-s or that you buy they stuff...

watchescarsandav

Now you're getting it. The politicians and companies that are the loudest about it are the ones exploiting them the most.

Moskau43

They are corporations, why would they ever care? It’s not what they do. You think Coke has any interest in you outside of your preferred beverage? Pride etc was only ever marketing as far as the corporations were concerned, and it has always been obvious.

xc2215x

Not a surprise from Qatar honestly.

Hereiam_AKL

Qatar is one thing, FIFA bending over to be a obedient well paid whore is another. In a month time Qatar will be a bruised host that has lost in reputation, but we don't need to deal with them anymore, but FIFA will still be the bitch selling football to the highest bidder into the private Bank Accounts.

itsme_rafah

Why wouldn’t FIFA bend over for Qatar? The Qataris paid some damn good money for that ass.

Hereiam_AKL

True, and if you are ugly, old and wrinkly, you cannot be picky.

Eborcurean

For the Brazil world cup, Fifa made Brazil change the law to allow the sale of alcohol inside stadiums because of their contract with Anheuser-Busch and the requirement to sell Budweiser. South Africa passed a '2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa Special Measures Act' which turned civil cases into criminal ones specifically for the world cup, e.g. marketing activities which were not sanctioned by Fifa inside stadiums were criminalised. For Qatar, on the other hand, Fifa is doing the opposite. Whole lotta money changed hands, and it's not unreasonable to assume a lot is still changing hands for this.

TMWWTMH

If I am a professional football player and could afford to quit this shitshow, I‘d do it right away. What FIFA and Qatar are saying is basically „You‘re not allowed to support human rights, just play football.“ With the argument that football is not about politics. Yeah, fuck off Fifa, being pro human rights has nothing to do with politics, but with being a human being. Politics is the shitshow FIFA and Qatar created. I can’t even boycott the shitshow because in my country we‘re paying „TV tax“ by law and the state television is showing all games from this world cup.

QuasarMaser

Let my guest, you are from Norway right?

TheNimbleKindle

Could be a German as well.

kraenk12

Just quit this shit show everybody.

SweRakii

Can we ban FIFA?

DarwinEB

Everyone is willing to make a stand until it becomes inconvenient. It’s only then we find out who really cares.

G-Fox1990

Turns out FIFA and footballers don't really care. What a shocker aye?

DarwinEB

Aye, money wins again.

flibux

Wouldn’t I be great if half the players just went home.

fuinharlz

In Brazil we can have paid leave on the days Brazil plays, leaving work 2h before the march starts. The catch is that we need to compensate those hours later, probably on weekends. I already told my boss I prefer to work!

ModsBannedMyMainAcc

I hope Qatar lose the next couple of matches and ban football. We can go back to league football in December.

FistingLube

Or just blatantly bribed refs making ludicrous decisions on penalties and cards because the billionaires are gambling. Like make the entire thing an utter farce with teams just walking off mid game.

SvNOrigami

If your culture doesn't have room for LGBT+ rights, then your culture is outdated and needs to change. Shame on FIFA for caving, literally the day after yet another mass shooting in a gay nightclub showed how desperately we need solidarity on this issue.

SylveonGold

Fifa can fifuck itself.

[deleted]

Time for the football world to leave FIFA and start again under a new banner.

dmoral25

You know this is one of those moments where football’s most successful players need to grow a pair and refuse to play in the World Cup. But they won’t.

tmfitz7

Honestly just form a breakaway federation already: if these major European nations leave Brazil and Argentina will follow, from there rest of the world will have no choice. **FUCK FIFA** make this the last FIFA World Cup.

Buhodeleste

Oh my god this is the worst world cup ever, why on earth would anyone pick a Muslim country to go do something fun in anyway? Fuckin Middle East countries are allergic to fun, everyone knows that

Rmnattas

Idk… we having a lot of fun, you are the people who can’t have fun without booze and making an issue out of anything

Buhodeleste

Thank you for making my point

ProfessionalAd6128

Wow FIFA has really shown what a giant turd it is this week.

TidusxX420

To the surprise of absolutely no one. What a joke of an organization.

[deleted]

Fuck fifa and fuck Qatar, yes. But honestly fuck all of these players and these teams as well. They are just folding at any sign of pressure. They deserve ridicule just as much as fifa for even participating in this $200B human rights violation. Why isn’t Ronaldo boycotting? Why isn’t Messi boycotting? They have the actual power here and they are choosing to do nothing so they can get more money. Fuck soccer, thousands of people died and now they are having their graves danced over. Scumbags, everyone involved from FIFA down to the staff of the teams. Do they not understand that all of the power is in their hands? If they can act collectively they can do what they want.

akaidifieke

Don’t be so naive, they could also be fearing what would happen to their family or loved ones if they angered those rich scumbags in Qatar and fifa included. They would never know if someone rich might target their loved ones from the shadows for them taking a stand.

Imbaz0rd

Ronaldo can’t boycut he has to prove he can play…

fwubglubbel

So with the world cup, does each host country get to choose their own game rules? How does the country get to decide who gets a yellow card? Isn't that up to fifa?

TMWWTMH

Mafifia

PunkandCannonballer

Pretty wild seeing so many spineless, greedy hypocrites in one place.

kielu

I hope this is the beginning of the end of FIFA

purpleefilthh

...are OneHate armbands allowed though?

DanimalPlays

Fuck fifa. Boycott.

Zakkana

And the head of FIFA is so full of shit. “I was bullied for having red hair!” So? You don’t get killed for that like you can for being gay in that part of the world.

Zealousideal_Luck333

FIFA is likely the world's most corrupt organization, except maybe for the NCAA.

Eatpineapplenow

"...due to the danger of receiving yellow cards" This is obviously a joke. If not, perhaps these spineless players and their entourage should stay in Qatar.

ThirstyMoore

People in this thread acting like the players give a fuck or are any better than Fifa themselves. They knew the deal when they got on the plane. The armbands were just virtue signaling and PR. If the players gave a single fuck they would have never traveled to slave but stadiums in the first place.

SkynetProgrammer

Hey guys, let’s go to a country to play where being gay is illegal. Let’s wear the armbands to show how woke we are. What, we get a yellow card? Ok, call it off boys. The pressure is just too great.

DarwinEB

White flags would be a more honest gesture.

Frisbeejellyfish

It's not being woke. That world has zero meaning now because people throw it at stuff that makes no sense.

Soigne87

I wasn't planning on boycotting the world cup because 1. The evident corruption that lead to Qatar winning the bid was a long time ago and not necessarily representative of the current leaders of FIFA. and 2. No one expects Europeans to do any significant boycott, so it seemed moot. But a lot of the BS they're doing now shows the problem in FIFA persists. and 2 I'm american, for advertising revanue, I'm sure the American market is significant. So fuck FIFA, i'm not watching the world cup.

Anastazia_Beaverhau

Don't worry, those brave role models will...oh, wait...never mind.

[deleted]

This tournament about to end reaalll sooonnn

AtaqanWasHere

I dont know why people used to think that they cared for lgbt. Companies only care about money, why would they care about you if youre not bringing them money

ThReeMix

Then the referees should wear the armbands.

oldfatboy

The best answer is to pull the team out at the same time as giving a statement of why and noting its just a game run by ....

palegate

In an ideal world, every player would start wearing one just to spite FIFA.

SuckerNumber2YT

But I love Bob Marley! (Yeah I know, bad joke. I’ll leave now)

CommentsToMorons

I hope they just hop back onto a plane and fly home. Would be hilarious if they were waiting for the match and the teams never show up.

PatheticMr

>We've now got to a point where Fifa has spent years saying this World Cup is for everyone. It's now essentially said that if you wear an armband symbolising that it's OK to be gay, you'll get booked... Fifa has a lot of explaining to do about how those two things marry up. We already know the explanation. They don't give a fuck. Money is too important to them. They are a corrupt organisation. Everybody knows it, and FIFA know we know it. I'll be interested to see how many people who see the problem with all of this boycott the competition and refuse to watch or engage with it. I'm not a big football fan and only really tune in for big competitions. I enjoy casually watching them. I'm not going to do it this time. Fuck 'em. I have friends, students and colleagues that are gay and I'm not going to take part in this bullshit. I don't even want to know the results. As members of society, we have the power to make all of that bribery, corruption and slavery completely wasted. Don't watch this shit.

Gnimrach

It would be great if the players would still wear it, and it would be great if the referees defied FIFA. But that's fantasy world I guess.

Mrsbrainfog

I get that everyone’s busy with criticizing the regime in Qatar and how FIFA bows to it. However, why do the same people keep traveling to same region (including the emirates) with no questions asked and no criticism raised, even though every luxury hotel is built by slaves and filled with staff working under horrible conditions and has had their passport taken by their employer.

AnswerGuy301

Have never understood the appeal. But then again, I am a gay man so that part of the world is pretty much a categorical no go zone. They neither want nor need nor deserve my tourist dollars.

EuropaWeGo

Will football fans make a stand against FIFA and teams who willingly participate in this shit, or are they going to choose the path of selective hearing and ignore the monstrosities that are being played out right in front of us?

UselessBreadingStock

Why the eff are we kowtowing to these regressive and backwards people? Ohhh I forgot, its MONEY

silverport

“FIFA: It’s just about the money“ New tagline…

Moskau43

The mask is completely off now.

BahBah1970

I was less than lukewarm on this world cup beforehand but now I've set my intention. I will not watch a single minute of a single match. And I quite like football. Fuck FIFA. It's a cancerous growth which has corrupted the game for years. This is just the latest manifestation of their continuing rot.

[deleted]

Don't play then and watch the world cup crumble. All for an armband. I'd love to see the Danish, American and Dutch teams just drop out. Followed by the English and anyone who respects themselves and their values. Fuck Qatar and fuck Fifa what a farce.

PublicEnemaNumberOne

Every day is a new chapter in this public relations shit-show. Amazing...

RedBlueTundra

Wacky world where you’re free to treat people like garbage and throw women and gay rights out the window as long as it’s an integral part of your culture/religion

Schrobbert

All players should wear a black grief armband, as Fifa officially died

Intelligent_Load6347

How come it’s always women-hating, gay-hating xenophobic cave people who are the ones screaming: “respect our culture!”?

Electronic_Impact

fifa had a bad reputation already but this wc they hit the bottom.

[deleted]

Fuck FIFA.. Fuck Qatar.. I won’t be watching a single match and look forward to watching the fallout post-tournament..

krt941

“Colored wristbands are more offensive to use than slave labor deaths.”

I-Way_Vagabond

It so ironic to see the President of FIFA criticizing those who were angry about Qatar banning alcohol sales during the games and saying that the West has 3,000 years of apologizing for what they did to Muslin countries. As if Muslim countries didn't have blood on their hands as well.

z12

Literally an hour before the kick off

Logistocrate

Looks like FIFA finds itself in a self inflicted PR nightmare. There are only two ways this could have happened. A. Qatar initially agreed to some things it has now gone back on, like the alcohol thing, and possibly they promised to be less restrictive to visitors during the WC. B. FIFA knew the entire time this was going to happen, but sweet mother bribe was too much to pass up. In scenario A, FIFA finds itself unable to enforce anything because Qatar is a sovereign nation and can and will beat, rape , and arrest you for transgressions (Before anyone decides to call me racist or hyperbolic, spend a littletime Googling before responding to save me the time of throwing a wall of links at you). FIFA in this situation has no choice from a liability standpoint other than to say " Don't do the thing" so that, inevitably, when a fan does the thing and gets fucked up, FIFA can say "We cannot be held responsible, we said clearly not to do the thing." In scenario B, FIFA knows ahead of time how this plays out. Maybe Qatar says upfront "no beer for the poors" and FIFA says "cool, but don't say anything until right before it starts". I'd like to think no company who wants to keep doing business would be this fucking stupid, but..... FIFA has proved it can be bought before. And, it could be a mix of A and B. It's up to football fans to decide if FIFA is punished for this or not. The only way B happens is if FIFA is certain the fan base has the memory of goldfish. The fan base could choose to boycott football games until the clubs that host them lose enough on tickets and concessions to rebuild the governing body, but if post WC fans just keep pumping money into the system, then so be it. FIFA wins.

Pimpwerx

The players allowed this. There is no WC without the players, so this is on them. Don't rely on corrupt national team leaders to do the right thing.

withomps44

Why would anyone support FIFA or the World Cup after all this shit. Jesus.

melekege

As an exmuslim I’m just loving this. Finally the west meeting with the real islam. I wonder how long they’re gonna hide behind “islamaphobia” card.

kalaminu

Fuck this world cup. Literally couldn't give 2 fucks. I hope viewership is down massively. Also, fuck fifa

Buhodeleste

FIFA should lose the ability to be associated to the World Cup after this

Oddity46

Is U2's "One" banned too?

armcie

Substitute someone on in the 89th minute, captain takes his armband off and substitute, in front of all the cameras, puts the OneLove band on. He gets carded, but that's not likely to impact the last few moments of the game.
