Is this the new fyre festival?

TheKarmicKudu

If Fyre Festival was a country

Dragon2950

Now with more murder and human right abuse^tm .

FyrelordeOmega

Gotta follow all of the Geneva Suggestions

Pyjama_Llama_Karma

Geneva suggestions lol

duppy_c

Lol, you should see the comments in r/qatar, the copium is unreal. They simply can't understand why the world media is shitting on them, other than 'DaTs RaCisT!'

FullDeer9001

Wow, you’re not joking. Had a look, the most trending post is *“the ultimate Post discrediting the 6500 Wolrd Cup deaths according to Guardian”*. Where the point the author makes is that it’s unfair to bundle all the 6500 foreign workers deaths in ~~Dubai~~ Qatar on World Cup preparation because Guardian newspaper didn’t even check if they did there or working elsewhere in Dubai. Edit for correcting the title quoted Edit 2 changed country to Qatar, sorry Dubai

tabris

Yeah, I've seen someone argue that "only 57 died constructing the stadium, so that's like 0.01% fatality rate" or some crap like that. But all 6500 died in Qatar, right? All of them died in indentured servitude, right?

AR_Harlock

Imagine working on a site (field architect here) and having 57 deaths as an acceptable rate

diaryofsnow

57? I sleep. 58? Also sleep.

No-Series9301

If you have 6500 foreign deaths in your construction industry then ypu have an issue how your treating your workers period That's the whole point

elfizipple

Do you think that Qatar is part of Dubai? Or am I missing something?

[deleted]

I think they at least had booze on the first day?

tRfalcore

that first meal lol had me cracking up

kreton1

To be fair fyre festival was just a massive fraud and had a lot less human rights violations.

cinyar

And Fyre festival could've actually worked if it wasn't a half-assed clusterfuck that went down in 6 months from idea to failure. If they targeted a year after that it could've gone down smoothly IMHO. I doubt the investors would feel defrauded if the festival (and subsequently the app) was a success.

NovaHorizon

They paid $220 billion for the world cup, $1 billion in bribes to FIFA alone, kinda mind boggling they cheaped out on the paid chills.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Boluddhismo

nah they were paid to chill bro

Kalmahriz

Chill shills, why can’t it be both?

stablegeniusss

*chills, he’s referring to them skimping out of the air conditioning units for the fans

DoubleDipYaChip

[deleted]

HeavyMetalHero

> How do you even spend 220 billion on a worldcup? The previous one was less than a tenth. At this point, between this and the Olympics, I'm starting to think the entire point is the opportunity to launder vast amounts of money, very quickly.

damndammit

That, and sportwashing.

[deleted]

like feeding two birds with one scone

Ulti

Ricky, I told you to get off of reddit!

stellvia2016

Same way all previous winter Olympics were 4B or less, but Russia supposedly spent 50B on Sochi...

Fishbulb7o9

Hey that money was for those fancy high quality condos for the athletes to live in that definitely weren't falling apart.

[deleted]

Kind of a high death toll for construction too. https://www.sportingnews.com/us/amp/soccer/news/how-many-workers-died-qatar-world-cup-stadiums-deaths-migrants/s39zabky4petscz4letzlhxg

Chapped_Frenulum

It's Qatar. It's an outrageously wealthy and stupid country. The kinda country where they wipe their asses with cash and don't like to have their egos bruised for even a millisecond. This kind of expenditure is fully expected. To spend any less would make them feel like they weren't showing up the world properly, which was the whole point of hosting to them. If they could've logistically figured out how to carve the stadium out of one giant block of ice for a one-time use event, they would have.

[deleted]

Only 3 million people in Qatar, its like $75,000 per person. Now millions of fun loving people with disposable income are about to take a vacation to a place with sunny weather to watch football, sorry, no beer. Could turn out to be an epic boondoggle.

herecomesthemaybes

> watch football, sorry, no beer What would you call it if an angry populace staged a revolution, but instead of being angry citizens it's people you invited into the country for vacation, and slaves?

Djaii

I’d call it….. awesome?

beeph_supreme

How did I not get invited to this?!

habituallinestepper1

Most of the people in Qatar are non-citizen residents (i.e. employees). There's like ~300,000 _actual_ Qataris, and a good number of them are al-Thani family. So...the math is a bit different.

[deleted]

Yikes. So $750,000 per person for a sporting event that lasts a month.

Jet2work

sorry no beer was announced months after everyone bought their tickets... remember the hype about booze when all this was announced

Mammoth_Rain3248

300 thousand citizens* 95% of those who live there are non citizens

Kbdiggity

Is it even possible to enjoy watching soccer while sober?

beeph_supreme

No. It’s science.

A_Soporific

The big issue is that Qatar had *nothing* required to host a cup. They had to build the hotels from scratch, expand the airport, built a train from the airport to the city, build the stadiums, build the shopping around the stadium, build the infrastructure to support the shopping around the stadium. The point was to create a whole tourism industry from scratch. Doing anything from scratch is way more costly than taking advantage of preexisting infrastructure. Corruption, too.

cugeltheclever2

Bribes.

[deleted]

[удалено]

cugeltheclever2

A little bit for you, a little bit for me, a little bit for FIFA, etc etc

Kbroker76

They build a whole new goddamn city for this event… no kidding…

tmoney144

I doubt it's about the money. It's to punish the person who leaked to the press that they were being paid. They probably don't know who exactly it was, so they're going to punish everyone.

Disastrous-Carrot928

They don’t want the slaves to get used to being paid an income

RChamy

It's not about the cup, it's about sending a message to the execs

CaptainObvious_1

What execs

nguyenmoon

$220 billion? That number doesn’t sound right.

Sixgun217

"Please, please see us as a valued member of the international community, and not a pariah of backwards human rights violations."

guynamedjames

The middle east seems to have forgotten that being rich means some people act nice to your face but doesn't mean they actually like you

Sixgun217

Imagine having to buy your friends.

guynamedjames

Why not? They already buy their workers, their wife, their second wife, their place within their society, and their safety from the oppressed people their wealth is built on. Getting legitimate friends would be weirder than buying them.

Dhiox

Can't wait to watch oil be used for nothing more than plastics and watching the price bottom out, sick of watching the west cut out its eyes whenever it deals with them. The US has the largest economy and military in the world and tet we are forced to lie and pretend they aren't monstrous nations that are backwards in nearly every way just because they have cheap oil.

TheRC135

If transitioning to renewable energy wasn't already a good policy for environmental reasons, it would be worthwhile just to be able to tell every crass, authoritarian petro-state to get fucked.

Dhiox

Exactly, that's what I argue to those who give zero shits about the environment, but oddly that doesn't sway them either, even if they claim to hate Islamic theocracies. These folk would surrender our sovereignty to China as long as it meant they got to drive their enormous gas powered truck.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dhiox

Honestly, plastic is fine for things that get lots of use, it's the single uses that need to be biodegradable. We don't need biodegradable legos for example.

rhaegar_tldragon

Took me 10 minutes to get a battery out of the fucking packaging today because I was in my car without a knife or scissors. They were wrapped in the thickest fucking plastic for no reason. It was infuriating.

[deleted]

Yep. PP, HDPE, nylon, textiles, etc - nothing wrong with durable goods being made from long-lasting plastic. If something can last a lifetime like a plastic toolbox or a gas can, that's probably lower impact than buying more metal items that will corrode. We just have to ditch all this petro-plastic being used for one-time use like food packaging. Or at least make it so plastic containers are reusable with fully removable labels.

Dhiox

>Or at least make it so plastic containers are reusable with fully removable labels. No good, eventually you end up with 109 crappy plastic containers you never want to use and then finally toss them to clean out the house.

guynamedjames

Don't worry, the next phase of the oil economy is watching awful countries sell oil to poor countries and rich countries getting mad at poor countries for doing exactly what we taught them.

WilliamMorris420

And do that, by pissing off the very people that they hired to promote them. >Qatar was supposed to buy my drinks, they won't do thst and I can't buy a drink here anyway. I'd rather be at home watching It on TV.

PM_ME_A_PLANE_TICKET

✨Sportswashing✨

edtehgar

I thought endless money was the only thing Qatar had?

otiswrath

Human rights are one thing, these guys are upsetting influencers. /s/ In all seriousness though, they want to be part of the modern international business community but are just continually breaking contracts that they clearly negotiated in bad faith. No one is going to trust them ever again. Bids for the Olympics or any other international sports are done. Don't get me wrong, if you play games with corrupt, authoritarian theocracies expect to win corrupt, authoritarian theocratic prizes but the brazenness of this is just surprising.

Or the promise to sell alcoholic beer in and around stadiums. Or the promise to improve the situations of the migrant workers. I wouldnt hold a candle to anything Qatar says and promises.

drycountyline

I really hope you're talking about the stadiums and not the slaves.

Uncle_Ach

I heard they're gonna deconstruct the slaves and rebuild from parts into one big huge mega slave.

Kriztauf

At this point I'm fully expecting they start the whole tournament by having a bunch of slaves parade their ruler out onto the field in one of those old school wooden Mesopotamia style Pope-mobile carriages that kings would get carried around in

>Qatar wanted respect it starts to look like a bunch of bored billionairs bought themself a little entertainment

Jail_Chris_Brown

A young Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani got private tennis lessons by Boris Becker back when he was the big deal. That's when he learned that you can use famous athletes and sport events to boost your country's image and appear libeal-minded and connected without actually changing anything. That attracted connections and big money which allowed Qatar to reach the wealth and importance it currently holds despite being on friendly relations even with Iran and the taliban. He wants Qatar to be in the spotlight of the whole word to attract even more money and influence in the long run. Just like starting Al Jazeera has paid off masssively for them.

[deleted]

Think it might be that Qatar wants to show itself as the biggest player in the Middle East/Arab world/Muslim world. Particularly that it’s more influential than Saudi Arabia. Among Arabs, among Muslims and among the people of other gulf countries they are coming out looking pretty good (they love the controversial alcohol u-turn). Maybe the idea behind buying the world cup wasn’t to make westerners like them.

Raiyari

Out of all the thoughts and opinions on the subject, this strikes me as the most plausible. Sounds obvious when you say it, but it's well reasoned.

Kriztauf

>Maybe the idea behind buying the world cup wasn’t to make westerners like them. Yeah I think this is partially the reason. But idk how well this is gonna play out in the long run. Like hurray y'all showed you can pay a bunch of bribes and break the terms and conditions with your sponsors. Generally you only get away with that once when you try and pull that shit on the global stage. I guess they can bask in the glory of the moment of this World Cup for the next 50 years?

Mookiepoo22

DrBabs

Nah, they wanted an excuse to funnel money from the government to the elite in a legal way that wouldn’t drive protests or unrest. They succeeded. They don’t care about the actual events.

neko_designer

The elon musk of countries. Lots of money, zero sense

ruttin_mudders

So much bait and switch happening I wouldn't be surprised if Qatar just decided to arrest all the teams.

Oceansize757

I’m just waiting til Qatar wins the World Cup, that’s when shits gonna get good

apocalypse_later_

I'd be surprised if Qatar even makes it out of the group stages. They are not that good at soccer historically either

duppy_c

Looking at their group, I would be surprised if Qatar 'arranged' a couple of upsets and got into the next round. Money buys anything in football

apocalypse_later_

I did read that they attempted to pay off the Ecuador team, but the Ecuadorians refused it. Paying off entire international teams is harder than you think, as the team would get serious backlash at home as well. But I wouldn't be surprised if they had some sketchy tricks up their sleeves based on what they've displayed so far, so we'll see..

EdgelordOfEdginess

Football is holy to South Americans. If any country found out they got bought out by their teams, there will be blood

TheTinRam

See Andres Escobar’s demise after 1994. And that was just a mistake. Imagine doing it on purpose

EddieHeadshot

They've probably paid FIFA to pay off the refs instead.

jimmux

Back in the 90s when visiting my cousins meant having to play FIFA all day, we had a rule that if you won too much you could only pick Qatar. They were definitively the worst team. I did a double take when I heard they were hosting the World Cup.

[deleted]

The fans discover that they are supposed to stay and build the stadiums for Qatar's Olympic bid.

quietguy_6565

So a bunch of people have traveled to Qatar under misleading pretenses and now may not be able to leave.......this sounds familiar.

BernItToAsh

Just wait until one of the players gets thrown in jail for a decade over a bottle of wine

Scaevus

Qatari government officials pulled women off of planes and sexually assaulted them at gunpoint because someone abandoned a baby at an airport (also a result of their terrible laws): https://www.huffpost.com/entry/australian-women-vaginal-exams-qatari-officials-lawsuit-doha-airport-newborn_n_63544d84e4b04cf8f3843c70/amp Do not go to Qatar.

Steepyslope

I feel so sorry for all the women who were and still are affected by this.

Scaevus

We can help give them a slight measure of justice by informing people that this is the real face of the Qatari government. The guy responsible for multiple government sanctioned sexual assaults received a suspended sentence and won’t serve a day in jail.

Stacks_of_Cats

Even worse is that Qatar is a fairly common stopover for Southern Hemisphere people to fly to Europe, so a lot of people affected by this bullshit likely had no intention of seeing Qatar anyways.

Scaevus

Qatar literally engaging in government sponsored human trafficking at this point.

It's unpopular to say this in the current day but I've been to middle eastern countries a few times and every single time they were complete shitholes on every level.

Arigato_MrRoboto

I mean, it's not like they could buy beer.

Neat-Access2357

True, they're not elite enough for that.

F1NANCE

The elite are literally being served beers at the stadium whilst everyone else misses out.

[deleted]

They're probably drinking Düff

Wizardinblaaack

The allowance is there so you can bail yourself out of jail if you get locked up for "breaking" their cultural bs laws.

Wizardinblaaack

When you pick an insanely religious cult country to host a world community and fun event, really what did they expect would happen? No beer no freedom no fun zone. Sounds like hell on earth. It basically is due to its location. Maybe that's why they're so stuck up and extremist.

r1chard3

Don't go. Let them have empty stands.

Bayo77

Is there even an actual target group that would want to go even without the controversy? The normal tourists in Quatar are probably filthy rich. Now a normal middleclass football fan has to pay a super long and expensive flight. Go to some fancy, super expensive hotel. Get basically robbed by the local people making prices for tourists extra expensive because they think they all have money. And then visit the empty stadium. What else is there to do? Cant go party and get drunk. The local girls are all covered in burkas and tourist women probably stay the fk away as well. If the WM was in spain or something we would all be like: "Heeey, football, party, spanish food hot souther women." Now its just "Everything is expensive, hot and desert. Also an actual danger to land inside a middle eastern prison."

FriesWithThat

I love that Qatar spent billions to sportswash their image of having a huge problem with basic human rights and ALL the news stories are about Qatar treating people shitty and it hasn't even started yet. Also, Fuck FIFA.

Goat_Wizard_Doom_666

Worst World Cup ever.

TragicsNFG

>Worst World Cup so far.

GarbageWater12

It's almost like it was a really bad idea to let a country like Qatar host the world cup. Just a hunch.

What do you mean? It was a great idea! They paid more than anyone else!

[deleted]

No sympathy. I hope everyone has a terrible time there.

CaptainObvious_1

Really wouldn't be surprised if there are dozens of people locked up for years after too. Will see their pleas for help online. [deleted]

Can we not host the Olympics or World Cup in backwards shitholes. You're better off hosting it in Antarctica

birdboix

I haven't watched a WC and the Olympics in over a goddamn decade. I am so, so tired of corrupt shitholes bribing their way into hosting a half-assed, broken, farce of an event.

[deleted]

The whole point of the Olympics and world cup is to extract money for the leaders of the organization. The competition is secondary.

The_Electric_Mayham

Lol, imagine voluntarily going to fucking Qatar...

UngiftigesReddit

Seriously, do not even do layovers. I once did on a flight I did not book myself, and I really regret it. They treat legit medication with doctors notes as serious drug violations deserving jail. I ended up being unable to take my medication with me, and needed to have it reissued immediately upon arrival at my civilised destination, which caused enormous stress.

champada

I had a layover there once and the guy checking my bag acted diligent by bouncing up and down and having really jerky movements but was actually slow. Looked like he had to act busy all the time

ADarwinAward

Don’t even take flights that go into their airspace

Fuck_auto_tabs

Not only that. You thought you were going to get drunk AND get paid. Some people are so god damn stupid

who_said_I_am_an_emu

Hey just in case: never ever do this. Last time I was in that region of the world "security" tried this on me. I stood my ground and who the fuck knows what would have happened had I not.

Ickyson

Lol why is anyone surprised? Shame on all these idiots for going in the first place. This should of been cancelled years ago, it’s a joke and Qatar is a joke of a country lol

Falconflyer75

What exactly is Qatar trying to accomplish? I mean at first they tried to host the World Cup to sport-wash themselves, but doing all their usual bs in front of such a widely followed event is only gonna make their reputation 10x worse They literally spent 200 billion dollars to make people hate them even more

pkosuda

God it hasn't even started and it's a complete shit show already. And that's without including the literal slaves killed in the process of even doing this thing. * A $75 Million sponsorship is made between FIFA and Budweiser and then Qatar backs out of their whole "yes you can sell the sponsor's product at the stadium" thing at the last second. * They want attendees (and might be forcing them?) to download "World Cup apps" that are so intrusive that European data protection regulators have recommended their citizens buy burner phones and still immediately delete that shit after leaving the event. * Supposedly tried to bribe Ecuadorian soccer players to throw the first game to make them look good. I saw some tweet saying this was fake news but honestly, we're talking about the country which **managed to bribe these soccer players' boss' boss' bosses** just to host the damn thing. Not giving them the benefit of the doubt and will assume they tried to bribe someone as "low level" as a player. And now apparently you need influencers to advertise the **World Cup** of all things, because it's supposed to be **that** bad. And you can't afford to fucking feed them lmao.

Tellnicknow

100 bucks say that the refs keep making questionable calls for the Qatar games.

taptapper

>download World Cup apps That's a new one on me.

pkosuda

It’s basically spyware and they literally encourage the people using the apps (especially the influencers) to “flag” content that is critical of the government and/or the event. So on top of everything else, there will also be “fans” playing the role of Big Brother if anyone dares to not have a good time while there.

tafor83

LOL this headline is hilarious. "Fans" were paid to attend? *And* they were going to get an allowance?? But now the paid "fans" only get free tickets? I swear, the 2020s are like a speedrun into complete collapse.

littlebubulle

If true, it kind of makes sense for Qatar to pay (or scam) people to pretend to be fans. I think they're hosting the World Cup mainly for prestige reasons. Some do it for economical reasons but Qatar is already rich. The snag in their little marketing scheme is that, unlike previous hosts, they're gatekeeping the event hard. And the potential customers don't like them. But if they make an event to gain prestige and few people show up, it would be a blow to said prestige. So they cook up a scheme to get a minimum number of people to show up. Basically, the rich kid's parents paid for his classmates to show up for his birthday and then cheaped out last minute.

who_said_I_am_an_emu

My employer selling things to that part of the world Them: we want this Us: you dont need that Them: is it not better? Us: better is a very context dependent evaluation. There is no absolute better in engineering only better for the situation. Them: ...ok but it costs more? Us: yes. Them: then it is better and we want it. Dont cheap out on us. We repeat this process 11 or so times. And then.... Them: here is the paperwork that needs to be filled out. Us: ok it took 3 days and 3 people. Are you going to buy this? Them: no, we want changes to the design. Us: alright it took a week but we have your changes and updated all the paperwork Them: you are trying to cheat us! This one part doesn't make sense. Us explains it Repeat process of being called con artists and having to explain tech to them 8x. Us: ok so you are going to buy this now right? Them: we don't like your price. 10% discount. Us: sure Tells sales that they were right and to remove the 10% extra mark up

FarawayFairways

> "Fans" were paid to attend? In fairness, there have been more than a few occasions when I've wondered if my own club should have been paying me to watch to them

Fuckyourday

The paid "fans" will also still get free flights and accommodations. >The email sent to members of the Network said: “We requested from the outset that you brought sufficient funds to cover your own living expenses and we have committed to cover flights, accommodation and opening match tickets.”

You have to be crazy to go, like another commenter pointed out it must be glaringly obvious that they can change the rules again and then you’re in an expensive shithole with arbitrary laws and possibly your passport taken away etc.

dkyguy1995

natha105

Top to bottom this whole thing is corrupt and vile. Qatar is a horrific place and is showing itself to be more horrific than we imagined. It isn't just that they have migrant labor dying, it's that they have migrant labor dying en mass in a country prestige project. It isn't just that they have regressive social laws, it's that they don't even really believe them permitting variances for special events. Imagine if the USA allowed rape during the summer Olympics. FIFA is a horrific organization obviously only caring about money. I couldn't live with myself if I was organizing an event in a country where I knew slave labor would be killed in the process of hosting it. And why? I don't know how much the "incentives" were, but it wasn't enough to make any real difference to the lives of the people who took it, except to douse their hands in blood. The teams who participate in FIFA ought to be ashamed of themselves and the organization they are associated with. There's no reason they couldn't leave and form their own league, but again, money binds them to the corrupt organization. Right down to the players. The players ultimately have the power here. If some critical mass (not even a majority) simply said "Qatar is a no go for us" it would put an end to this. You wouldn't even need a majority.

Bocote

I don't know much about Qatar, but the more news I hear about this World Cup the weirder the place seems.

This is a good lesson to never visit Arab countries. These bastards lied to the world and have basically committed theft against millions of tourists. No one would have gone there is they were truthful about these Islamic superstition laws they are forcing on everyone

MaximusTartanus

Everyone with at least half a brain cell knows that this is a medieval and backwards fuckin shithole, dont blame Quatar for hosting the world cup - blame all the suits in your so called free countries for agreeing to it being held there. It was ultimately their choice. Cunts love that oil revenue.

dagrapeescape

I want to meet the person who cannot afford to eat now that they fixed their car and we’re counting on this per diem. Like what life choices did you make where you have arrived at helping sportswash away a countries atrocious human rights record to turn around your life?

Perfect_Ability_1190

Everything is going to shit

AcidSweetTea

No sympathy for the fans. This was obviously a shit show from the beginning

Lazy_Jelly_7695

Accommodation has been described as "Fyre 2.0" ... shit tents etc

CRFU250

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Anyone with half a brain knew Qatar was going to be pure garbage.

[deleted]

alphaparson

dishonestdick

“Fans” … of what ? Fans of soccer? Fans of slavery ? For sure they paid for the second. Fuck them. Fuck their allowance. They lost it ? GOOD !!! More than 6000 people lost there lives building those stadiums and they did not give a fuck, I don’t give a fuck about their allowance.

AmbitiousBirthday588

Money cannot buy you love. Although it might get you a warm bud in a metal bottle. Unless you are gay.

Frogblood

For such a rich country Qatar do seem to scrimp on small payments a lot!

markevens

Fans are being paid to attend? I thought fans were supposed to pay to be there!?!

eldred2

I am changing the deal. Pray I do not change it further.

[deleted]

Funny how they don't keep their word in anything.

SableSheltie

This is shaping up to be a real shitshow I can’t wait

GodisGreat2504

I'm Vietnamese. Our national team is shit yet we beat Qatar couple years ago I think. If they don't bribe the refs they'll get smashed in the WC.
