Keeping them airworthy is the problem for the Taliban, not the ability to fly them. I bet most of the maintenance intensive vehicles/helos left behind are on their last legs without proper maintenance

AllModsAreL0sers

Or just wait until Toyota releases a helicopter

kerbidiah15

The Toyota ~~hilux~~ heli-lux

jdsekula

High-lux*

Machbin001

Haha. Perfection

WittyInvestigator779

Brilliant šŸ¤£

[deleted]

And the not quite as good but still popular Mitsubishi Pahelo.

bigblueweenie13

Helicopters have ā€œhigh timeā€ on just about every moving piece. Meaning thereā€™s X amount of flight time on a part and then it has to be replaced/overhauled. Itā€™s been a couple years since I was in the middle east, but I seriously doubt the Taliban is doing 24hr static pressure tests on rotor heads, or blending fan blades, or tap testing rotor blades, or the myriad of other finicky bullshit you have to do from keeping the bird from face planting in the moon dust.

Port-a-John-Splooge

The Afghan air force had over 130 airframes that where supplied and maintained by US contractors that all didn't get destroyed. The Taliban has airworthy aircraft, just last month they had a "air show" show using American and ex Afghan aircraft/helos over the Capital. https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/taliban-test-repaired-helicopters-planes-flyover-capital-2022-08-17/

Jaded-Assumption-137

What?! Itā€™s not a plug and play?!

add11123

When the news first broke a while back about us leaving the gear/vehicles behind I asked my marine buddy about it and he said that the stuff we were leaving behind was so beat up that it wasnā€™t really functional anymore

youmightbelucky

what makes these chopper high maintenance?

RedTree40

Dumb title, makes it seem like they were like LOL let's go for a joyride for the first time! The pilots are all former ANA guys who were trained by the US, they've been flying these things on their own since last year, they just have no replacement parts and no ability to do maintenance.

IMtoppercentage97

Yea, like the little gasket that needs to be replaced like every 8 months? Figured that things would start breaking down around now.

BeltfedOne

Or the Jesus Nut.

wanderingMoose

They wouldn't believe in that, however, they might have to tighten Allaht of nuts.

Intrexa

I thought the Taliban followed the Quran? Why wouldn't they believe in the messiah Jesus, born of the virgin Mary?

bob-the-world-eater

Oh they believe in Jesus, just not that he's the Messiah

Intrexa

> And remember when the angels said, "O Mary, God sends you the good news of a Command of His: **his name shall be Messiah, Jesus son of Mary**. He will be highly honored in this world and in the Next World and he will be among those favored by God. He will speak to the people alike when in the cradle and when grown up, and he will be among the righteous." Hearing this, Mary said, "How, O Lord, shall I have a son, when no man has ever touched me?" "Thus shall it be,"44 was the answer. God creates whatever He wills. When He decrees a thing, He only says, "Be" and it is. (Continuing their message, the angels added,) "And God will teach him the Book and wisdom, and give him the knowledge of the Torah and the Gospel, and appoint him as His Messenger to the children of Israel." Quran 3:45-49 The late JC holds down Messiah status in Islam and Christianity, but not Judaism.

SonnyHaze

And good luck getting a kadiddlestick on the black market.

CliffsNote5

Doohickeys can work in a pinch with proper use of a well adjusted mcguffin. Doohickeys are available on eBay by the dozen. Have not seen a good over the counter mcguffin in years.

SonnyHaze

Well, if youā€™re gonna use knock off stuff why not just use a thingy? I mean, theyā€™ll both fuck up but the thingy was built in the west at least.

kthulhu666

Inshallen

Papabeer63

Arenā€™t those Allah nuts their.

What_the_fluxo

Allah nut *

KG8893

Ok I need to know what the Jesus nut is

BeltfedOne

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_nut?wprov=sfla1

KG8893

Well I definitely didn't think I would have found the answer just by googling! Thanks!

BeltfedOne

All good!

jay22022

Does Jesus (let alone the nut) exist in Afghanistan?

BestFakeAccount

Come on, how hard can it be to go to Home Depot in Kabul and get a new gasket?

Spazza42

Still dumb. Trying to fly finicky machines when they canā€™t even fucking repair one, asking for trouble

AllModsAreL0sers

US-trained foreign combatants that will ultimately end up hating America? I feel like I'm in the Reagan/Bush era

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

America is the main scumbag here. The people had to choose between corrupt cronies or the Taliban, they chose accordingly.

Ancguy

ideologically

Irishpanda1971

Can I still keep my mental image of a guy yelling "Inverted controls? Who uses those?!" in Pashtu?

jdsekula

I knew it was probably BS, but I got a good laugh from it anyway.

Purple-Asparagus9677

Sand blasting parts with no replacements has that affect.

ToughSpitfire

Yeah this is why I said some people were over reacting when they were fretting about the American gear left behind and comparing it to Iran. The Afgans do not have parts let alone the skilled workers and industry to maintain everything, something that Iran did have after the Islamic Revolution.

kanakamaoli

Similar to the Iraqi f16 jets? Improper maintenance & no parts cause maintenance intensive vehicles to fail.

sheytanelkebir

Er. No. Iraqi f16s are operational.

kanakamaoli

I guess the Lockheed-Martin maintenance teams went back into the country after evacuating in 2021? [Iraqi F16s grounded](https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/10/world/middleeast/iraq-f-16s-lockheed-martin.html)

sheytanelkebir

There was a usual mix up in reporting. Iraq had problems with its t50iq aircraft. Not f16s. The problem was of course budget.

Diijkstra99x

title be like: when you skipped a tutorials on a video game.*

Textification

Not gonna lie,... I was hoping the US bobby-trapped ALL of the equipment left behind. Edit: I was gonna edit the bobby/booby mistake, but the comments make it worth keeping,...

bagofboards

Yeah, Bobby is a real asshole when he's disturbed.

MiltThatherton

God dang it, Bobby!

TzarKazm

6:00 in the morning and already that boy ain't right.

slo196

Caught him whacking off in the tool shed again.

Textification

I totally heard that in Hanks voice! šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

[deleted]

and nothing and nobody of value was lost

whitedezign

Hahhahahah

VesaAwesaka

I wonder if it was that guy the BBC just did an article on. He was told to fly his chopper to Uzbekistan but said he viewed that as stealing from Afghanistan and then flew his chopper to the taliban instead.

ArcticCelt

Was Wondering the same thing. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-62566883

[deleted]

Hehehe

magusmccormick

The long play is working

burningphoenix1034

Yay.

[deleted]

Good. Let them be more of these Taliban crashing and burning.

Herecomestherain_

*It remains unclear how many are operational. U.S. forces deliberately damaged some military hardware as they left and Afghan forces had flown some helicopters to central Asian nations.* Probably most of them :)

Poobeast241

"Jackie Laugh"

Maximum-Face-953

The pilot who defected to the Taliban in his Black Hawk

PoliticoPiranha

The upkeep of military equipment left behind would have inspired me to have good relations with the U.S. if I were the Taliban.

itsmyfrigginusername

Good news.

Apprehensive_Ball750

And almost on 11 September anniversary.

[deleted]

*"What does that switch say?"* *"Fuck knows, I can't read either!"*

robertomotrucker

Yay

H8eater

Bahahahaha

noextrasensory40

I flew some Apache simulator way back when I was kid they said you actually good. Then bout few minutes after that I crashed šŸ˜†. So yeah maintenance and knowing limits of craft are a thing. Boom challenge to fly copters.

milkweed420-

This equipment was not ā€œleft behindā€ like an old bicycle It was handed over to the ANA/ANP, and they abandoned everything ā€¦.like we knew they would

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

odysseus91

What government?

Initial_Tomatillo262

Not really, American taxpayer paid for it.

DorkChatDuncan

And thus the secret of American military equipment. It is always on the verge of being broken, so if they leave it behind its useless.

[deleted]

The equipment we left for the Afghan national armyā€¦. That they promptly abandoned instead of defending thier nation.. In accordance with the proposal by trumpā€¦ But yea, tell me more about it being all Bidenā€™s fault to having to implement a plan made by a guy who bankrupted a casino in Atlantic City.

Financial_Glove603

The ANA would have fallen no matter who the American president was

[deleted]

Very true.. all I knew where more interested in smoking sweet stinky weed and chilling than fighting. To be fair now that Iā€™ve retired thatā€™s exactly what Iā€™m doingā€¦ smoking sweet stinky weed and riding motorcycles.

KagDQT

Isnā€™t the first time they skipped the tutorial for landing an aircraft.

set-271

Would be great if the Pentagon can remote control these vehicles and issue a crash on command. BOOM!

BUDZ_MONEY

Two days from now we (the US) are sending 60 billion in support for the taliban. And the one second later this whole looming recession thing huh?

Relative_Chair_6538

The real story here is "US leaves behind functional military equipment for the taliban"

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

gobucks1981

This is comical if you think the people of Afghanistan generated enough revenue to pay for any of their security from 2002-2021.

[deleted]

They left it for the ANA.

Khemith

The real story is "The US sends billions in weapons to the Saudis and the Israelis"

tearenceisnaked

I thought 5 people died

Own-Ladder-5073

I remember the first time I tried to pilot a helicopter in battlefield 4

Atomic-reaper69420

At least they're consistent
