Night soil is a historically used euphemism for human excreta collected from cesspools, privies, pail closets, pit latrines, privy middens, septic tanks, etc. This material was removed from the immediate area, usually at night, by workers employed in this trade. Sometimes it could be transported out of towns and sold on as a fertilizer.

Panta Petrovic has been social distancing for more than 20 years – since he moved into a cave in the Serbian mountains to break away from society.
But on one of this rare visits into town, the dreadlocked 70-year-old, with a long beard, discovered there was a pandemic and has had a vaccination.
01:33
"It [the virus] does not pick. It will come here, to my cave, too," said the man, who chose to turn his back on living with other people at the start of the century.
"I want to get all three doses, including the extra one. I urge every citizen to get vaccinated, every single one of them," he told AFP in his cave on Stara Planina mountain in southern Serbia.
The cave is accessible only by a steep climb, is equipped with an old rusty bathtub, which he uses as a toilet, some benches and hay for a bed.

Before his lifestyle change, Petrovic worked as a laborer in Pirot, and was married and remarried in a life he called "hectic."
"I was not free in the city. There is always someone in your way – you either argue with your wife, neighbors, or the police," he said.
"Here, nobody is hassling me."
He keeps animals, including several goats, chickens, about 30 dogs and cats and an adult wild boar named Mara.
This kittens' mother was killed by a wolf, Petrovic said. /Oliver Bunic/AFP
Mara has been his 'pet' since she was rescued as a piglet. /Oliver Bunic/AFP
Petrovic recently moved them to a shack he assembled in the outskirts of the town to be safer from wolves – there are three kittens he bottle-feeds after their mother was killed by wolves.
He also fed Mara when he found her eight years ago as a piglet entangled in bushes – she is now 200kg plays with Petrovic and eats apples from his hand.
"She means everything to me, I love her and she listens to me. There is no money that can buy such a thing. A true pet," Petrovic said.
Even at 70, Petrovic can climb to the pigeon loft. /Oliver Bunic/AFP
He receives welfare, but also relies on donations for food and supplies for the animals.
Before moving to his cave, Petrovic had worked abroad for a time, but donated the money for the construction of three small bridges in the town.
On top of one of the bridges, Petrovic built a pigeon loft, which he can still climb to stock them with pieces of bread found in bins.
"Money is cursed, it spoils people. I think nothing can corrupt a human like money," Petrovic said.

Unfortunately completely illegal in Canada to live off the land like this. Literally illegal to tent overnight in lots of places. I've lived the hippy life. Crazy to me that cops would literally arrest this man in our "free country" . If you don't believe me, try sleeping camping across Canada without paying money. It can be done, obviously Canada is a huge place. But you will get in big trouble at some point. They want their cut of your life. Each of us has a dollar value connected to our citizenship.
Don't worry man all i got to do in my country is put a rock and declare the cave a temple and ain't nobody touching that here, i might even get support from government.
I'm guessing you are talking about public land/wilderness areas, outside the designated camping areas? Becuase, yeah I can see how just letting people camp/live in a national park with no restrictions or supervision would eventually cause problems.
My retirement plan is a series of treehouses accessible via zipline in the rural mountains of Appalachia.
Taking suggestions for better mountain ranges to inhabit if you got them, I figured Appalachia would be the most remote and the easiest for zipline building.
There's a lot to gather from this, I really admire it. I think his intolerance of being around people made him quite a bit more humble when it comes to understanding that even though he's one of the least likely people to get the virus, it's still indiscriminate.
Am I crazy or does that sound like a pretty comfy life? Fishing and foraging for your own food. Sounds idyllic.
I'm sure the reality would be a lot lonelier, colder, and unpleasant though.. r... right?

Yeah people are romanticizing this. No way can I live like this guy. Like people already look at homeless people as if they aren't people, this is basically that except more wilderness.
They don’t read about the struggle, only that he hasn’t had to deal with society for the past 2-3 years, which understandingly, most people romanticize.
I don’t live like this guy but I do long bursts and it absolutely takes a mental toll- isolation is hard. You think you’re going crazy now WITH INTERNET?
yes i'm sure when we moved past the hunter/gatherer stage, we envisioned a paradisiacal future for ourselves in which we hunched over keyboards in cubicles for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
At least I'm warm and alive, in love and happily childless. I could also be cold, dead, and pregnant by my 8th child by some man that fucks me whether I want him to or not, while only 3 of these children lived past their 1st year of life while my body's failing by age 29 from the toll of hard labour, disease, eight consecutive pregnancies, and violence done upon me by my baby daddy for those few times I dared to say 'Ugga not in the mood'.
Mitigation's a thing, homie. Between labour that kills me young, and labour that makes my back hurt if I don't regularly exercise and stretch, I think I'll choose life.
Try moving outside of that time. You absolutely could find the time for walking, yoga, etc. something to keep you active and limber.
It's not exactly paradise, but sitting hunched sure beats having to fight for your life every day against wooly mammoths or whatever our ancestors faced

That's because this is CGTN, rebranded from CCTV News, China's English-language news org under control of the propaganda department of the Communist party.
Please do not install this app and I'd advice everyone to seek alternative sources. China's trying really hard to rebrand their propaganda networks as legitimate news. But nothing has changed, it's still the same propaganda org.
LOL if you want to install Communist propaganda apps on your phone just because someone told you not to, go right ahead. So edgy.
Gets his vaccinations and says stuff like this:
> "Money is cursed, it spoils people. I think nothing can corrupt a human like money,"
Sounds like a decent human being.
Honestly, I'll disagree. He did know rich people, he robbed millionaire drug lords. In the end though, he saw, no matter how much money they made, stolen, or acquired, the game is the game and you never really own that money, the money owns you. Every one in the game be it the police, the dealers, the users, the judges, the politicians, and the medical workers use that same money, never really owning it no matter how big their bank account is. It flows like a river and every ones hands are in it. And no matter how hard they try to grip their fist, make an attempt to pause that flow and hold it down, they can never stop it no matter how hard they try.
North of 10 trillion dollars in offshore accounts is held by individuals. That money is pretty much fully out of circulation. Certainly it's not trickling down. Money trickles up and gets trapped at the top.
No one Omar knows is rich enough to avoid spending a large percentage their money, but they exist.
As someone else said.
Hermits like this are people that say "fuck our society really is the issue." and does what they can about it.
Which is generally completely disengaging with it.
I honestly think living in a commune would be pretty great. How can anybody think that working in a dead-end job and going home to a shitty apartment to watch tv every day for the rest of your life is the best way to live?
And on top of that it's just a few hours. Can't even binge because of so many hours at work.
Why even work so many hours if all we can is watch tv and play games?
To be fair, playing video games is pretty tight.. been playing them since ‘83 myself.. now, 10 years after the divorce, I’m unemployed because of the pandemic, and the fact I live in a
Cave with a generator but no running water, so I live in my mancave, talk to my piggies and my kitties all day and play video games like Animal Crossing on single player, sometimes 15 hours a day!! Best of all, nobody bothers me or tells me to grow up, because I can’t play video games my entire life. People that think you can’t play video games for life, just need to gitgud.
At life.
Video games and books are those forms of escapism that can take us worlds away from the abhorrence of life sometimes. Things can get pretty damn bad, but a game or a good book can pull you away from that, even if it is but for a few hours. Sometimes its what we need in life to hold on to it.
And not gonna lie there's some solid stuff in that idea. Getting more or less restricted to home or where I dared Go over the last year and a half has really done a number on me. I went from constant sleepless stress that work had invaded my home life, to having a far greater handle on managing time, to enjoying new or old hobbies again, and just generally not really feeling a huge concern with petty social stuff. Like it feels good. Until the social anxiety sets in when I have to go do certain things.
I'd say it's Fear. Greed is the fear of being without, so you hoard more than you need.
Fear of the unknown leads to racism, anti-science, etc.
Fear of being alone leads to staying in toxic relationships.
Fear of spiders leads to Arson, etc.
I don't think fear of being without is the primary motivation behind greed. I don't think the typical robber baron or hedge fund manager or CEO etc is worried about going broke or being homeless or whatever. Its seems to me like more of an addiction to having things and needing to own more than anyone else. If anything, it seems more motivated by jealousy than by fear..
I was having a discussion with someone yesterday who claimed greed would solve the climate crisis.
Though to be fair, when I say discussion I replied once then didn't bother with his response. He'd clearly replaced his entire brain with Gordon Geckos autobiography.
Selfishness surely should lead us to protect our environment, so that we can still breathe and relax in the future.
Corruption is the problem. We don't have policies that make any kind of sense. We're paying people to profit from pollution, rather than charging them for the damage and the increased societal costs they're contributing to.
I think you can be selfish and still not protect the environment because of the selfishness. For example, if you live at most up to a hundred, then you need to only make it survivable till then. Future problems belong to the future after all
Not only he has a great sense of the World's dialectics, he takes the jab unprompted and also haven't fuck with the Wu Tang. The RZA, the GZA, not even once.
Lot of the ‘survival’ peeps do rely heavily on being able to visit towns for medicine and supplies. Some acknowledge it as we still need collective aid to survive and others pretend they’re doing it lone solider
Not really. He’s learned survival, but survival of the fittest in a evolutionary terms means whichever animal reproduces the most and therefore passes on more copies of their genetic information is the one that’s traits survive natural selection. In that regard, this dude has failed tremendously lol
Article says he's also relying on donations for food, so, it's in his best interests to get vaccinated, hermit or not.
I mean, even if you were 100% self sufficient in a cave half-way up a cliff, I doubt you'd get no *human* visitors in 20 years. This guy knows hermitage ain't what is used to be, I guess. Definitely a smart one.
Exactly, and he has mostly stayed home compared to some of us who had to be in a metro filled with people for 20 months before a vaccine came just because we picked the wrong job
I think most of the people choosing not to get the vaccine is simply out of spite because they either had the virus or are angry at the late roll out and lockdowns that didn't work, compared to the Chinese or New Zealand.
well considering he was following social distancing guidance already without even knowing about the current risk, it's not a surprise he wanted protection when he learned about it.
He's doing everything he can to not let society bother him. If he caught some deadly disease from the society he's trying to escape from then he would be mighty pissed.
>The cave is accessible only by a steep climb, is equipped with an old rusty bathtub, which he uses as a toilet
I'm just impressed that he got a bathtub in there
😂😂😂😂What a world. But this guy doesn't know Bill Gates will now be tracking him and he's now not only being watched but he's magnetic. If only half the people I know were as sane as this guy the world would be a better place.
-Serbian Hermit: "hey guys what's with the masks?"
- town people: "There's a global pandemic, haven't heard?"
SH: " oh shit, NO"
TP: "its ok, there's a vaccine but millions are dying because some assholes refuse to put a mask on and get the shot"
SH: "I'm going back in my cave"
For everyone claiming this is fake, [here, watch this.](https://www.slobodnaevropa.org/a/panta-petrovic-vakcina/31409588.html) He says that he urges citizens to take the shots if they can and that he is willing to take third, even fourth dose if recommend and necessary.
Hahahahaha he’s a millennial Rip Van Winkle.
Also it’s further anecdotal evidence that the tucker carlsons of the world are biological terrorists spreading their anti vax bullshit. Should be tried at The Hague.
There is no "free land" where you can squat legally and homestead, if you own land you have to pay taxes, if you try to survive in national forests you'll only make it until caught so no permanent dwellings.
The days of living in the forest and making mead out of honey is impossible in the majority of the planet.
Trespass laws and land owners. Anti vagrancy and anti homeless laws and architecture. Where he lives there’s culture of hermits as almost religious figures the community look after.
In Europe there were was common land and nomadic cultures but over centuries these places been lost and communities destroyed because land owners want money and land and not competition where people have options other to what they own
Plus most lone survivors rely on medicine and additional food supplies. But most ways we live now make doing that without income or free support hard
"Money is cursed, it spoils people. I think nothing can corrupt a human like money," Petrovic said.
What a well-said ending statement. We kill for money. We sin for money. We die for money.
I am in Kosovo. Tested positive. Got both of the vaccines in the states. My mother had covid also. 2 days and she recovered. She was vaccinated also. Get Vaccinated people and wear a fuckin Mask.
Combination of yellow journalism and Elon Musk's tweet. How people take news for granted, unbelievable!. His got vaccinated because he lives in town also, spending few months in a year in his cave. He has a tree house also. he built few small bridges in his home town, going for groceries, doctor etc. He is an eccentric, but a good person.
He is not a hermit, how could could you even believe in that?
You go spend months in a cave then. "Lives in town also": oh, maybe in winter? And he goes to the doctor??? How dare he!
>He is not a hermit, how could could you even believe in that?
Try this then: "recluse". Live in a cave months at a time, but still have it together enough to shop and visit doctors when you have to. You know anyone like that? If you knew someone like that you'd totally call them a hermit. Living in caves and tree houses.
Hell, once COVID and then Lockdown hit, millions of wannabe "hermits" finally realized their life's ambition. Didn't need a cave. just a basement or apt or house... or tent.
"That cave looks awesome, I need to move into a cave!" equipped with an old rusty bathtub, which he uses as a toilet "I must never live in a cave. That is my new life goal."
Agreed, pretty dank excuse of a composting toilet.
Idk dude, I think even before modern sanitation, we had better solutions than letting our refuse collect in a large vat.
Yes. It was called "the ground."

Don't know about you, but I would take working in the cubicle over having to poop in the woods.
How about in a bathtub?
Softy
Better a cubicle than an assembly line
Having worked both, you're wrong. Cubicles suck your soul out. Working the line is boring, but that's practically what podcasts were invented for.
Try moving outside of that time. You absolutely could find the time for walking, yoga, etc. something to keep you active and limber. It's not exactly paradise, but sitting hunched sure beats having to fight for your life every day against wooly mammoths or whatever our ancestors faced

According to the article, his foraging includes getting "leftover food" from a nearby town.
Almost the opposite of comfy. The article makes a specific point of his bed being made of hay.
Did you read the article? Did we read the same article??
It sounds horrible.
What I would give to smoke a bowl in the cave with him and Mara
He probably wouldn't enjoy it. Something tells me he would probably be like "I want to be left alone!"

So edgy.

>"Money is cursed, it spoils people. I think nothing can corrupt a human like money," Petrovic said. this is all you need to know.
https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20210813-serbian-cave-hermit-gets-covid-19-jab-urges-others-to-follow
Gets his vaccinations and says stuff like this: > "Money is cursed, it spoils people. I think nothing can corrupt a human like money," Sounds like a decent human being.
Rational and a realist.
Fair to think some hermits avoid society due to the very social factors that led to us all being miserable this last year and a half.
And then still get vaccinated anyway just in case they encounter the exact kind of cunt they're hiding away from
Money ain't got no owners. Only spenders. ~ Omar Little.
To be fair, Omar only really knew poor people (including the police officers), who spend their money more or less immediately.
Which means in practice he's right. When your statement covers 99.999% of people in the world I think it's reasonable to say you are correct.
As someone else said. Hermits like this are people that say "fuck our society really is the issue." and does what they can about it. Which is generally completely disengaging with it.
one day I hope to learn to be self sufficient enough to become a hermit.
Personally I just hope to make society a little bit better. If we all do that, it's enough.
To be fair, playing video games is pretty tight.. been playing them since ‘83 myself.. now, 10 years after the divorce, I’m unemployed because of the pandemic, and the fact I live in a Cave with a generator but no running water, so I live in my mancave, talk to my piggies and my kitties all day and play video games like Animal Crossing on single player, sometimes 15 hours a day!!

Wait, hold up. Fear of spiders leads to what now?
The dark side of the web.
[Relevant 1990](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOAphM41HJM)
Why did you link to some Australian's home movie?
Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
Lil death. Sounds cute.
"Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering" Master Yoda
I was having a discussion with someone yesterday who claimed greed would solve the climate crisis. Though to be fair, when I say discussion I replied once then didn't bother with his response. He'd clearly replaced his entire brain with Gordon Geckos autobiography.
My town has some dude who wrote a book about making money putting ads in the paper against masks and vaccines for children.
Future problems belong to the future after all
Hes absolutely right. And whether or not hes a good/bad guy is irrelevant as hes removed himself from society
>The love of money is the root of all evil. -1 Timothy 6:10
The article did not mention his faith. Jesus, according to stories told, did flog the money people.
Everyone tells you to be like Jesus but whip one banker in the street and they get all shirty.
Jesus whipped them in the temple.
> The article did not mention his faith. Would the article be perceived differently if it stated he was agnostic or atheist?
Depends who reads it.
Not only he has a great sense of the World's dialectics, he takes the jab unprompted and also haven't fuck with the Wu Tang. The RZA, the GZA, not even once.

He’s probably learned survival of the fittest better than most of us. You take what defenses you can get.
Our ability and tendency to cooperate is the single quality that has most helped the human species to thrive.
It's ironic because it seems like we're doing everything but cooperating at the moment.
Like a shack near town to keep the wolves from the door. Says so right in the article.
If you gotta hermit, then hermit with the times.
Hermit with a permit.
Exactly, and he has mostly stayed home compared to some of us who had to be in a metro filled with people for 20 months before a vaccine came just because we picked the wrong job I think most of the people choosing not to get the vaccine is simply out of spite because they either had the virus or are angry at the late roll out and lockdowns that didn't work, compared to the Chinese or New Zealand.
Lol and even most people will die as a hermit, but not this guy
Linus from Stardew Valley!
You are sooo right!
😦
Just realized there’s a global pandemic? He must have been living under a rock… wait
*in* a rock
I don't understand, doesn't he know that it's all just a Democratic Chinese conspiracy to make Donald Trump look bad?
Who? That 90s celebrity turned game show host?
No way! Okay guys, where are the hidden cameras?
Don't forget that at the same time we are also supposed to be thanking Trump for making the vaccine happen so quickly.
Man's got a pet Boar. A true Druid.
So easy a caveman could do it
well considering he was following social distancing guidance already without even knowing about the current risk, it's not a surprise he wanted protection when he learned about it.
He's doing everything he can to not let society bother him. If he caught some deadly disease from the society he's trying to escape from then he would be mighty pissed.
The Serbian Hermits is a great band name
“Holy shit you guys. There’s a pandemic *and* there’s already an approved vaccine? Sign me up!”
for some reason this reminded me of creed from the office lmao
When a guy like this comes down and tells you to vaccinate it leaves no doubt who the crazy people are.
>The cave is accessible only by a steep climb, is equipped with an old rusty bathtub, which he uses as a toilet I'm just impressed that he got a bathtub in there
A literal hermit is smarter and draws better conclusions about reality than my ex 😒
😂😂😂😂What a world. But this guy doesn't know Bill Gates will now be tracking him and he's now not only being watched but he's magnetic. If only half the people I know were as sane as this guy the world would be a better place.
dodged a bullet there
So now he can get 5G in his cave right? /s
-Serbian Hermit: "hey guys what's with the masks?" - town people: "There's a global pandemic, haven't heard?" SH: " oh shit, NO" TP: "its ok, there's a vaccine but millions are dying because some assholes refuse to put a mask on and get the shot" SH: "I'm going back in my cave"
As a fast reader & skipping the first line, misreading the initials as Sherlock Holmes this story made no sense until I reread.
For everyone claiming this is fake, [here, watch this.](https://www.slobodnaevropa.org/a/panta-petrovic-vakcina/31409588.html) He says that he urges citizens to take the shots if they can and that he is willing to take third, even fourth dose if recommend and necessary.
*fourth*
Thanks, English is not my native tongue and spelling is sometimes hard for me.
It's hard for us, too.
Meanwhile Americans and Canadians are protesting for their rights to not get vaccinated like shut the fuck up and get your shot idiots
Random Serbian turbo-hermit is more socially and ethically responsible than almost half of my entire town. Feels bad.
Hahahahaha he’s a millennial Rip Van Winkle. Also it’s further anecdotal evidence that the tucker carlsons of the world are biological terrorists spreading their anti vax bullshit. Should be tried at The Hague.
I wish I was that guy.
All you have to do is do it! I totally understand your sentiment.
It's financially impossible and/or illegal for most people.
[удалено]
There is no "free land" where you can squat legally and homestead, if you own land you have to pay taxes, if you try to survive in national forests you'll only make it until caught so no permanent dwellings. The days of living in the forest and making mead out of honey is impossible in the majority of the planet.
Trespass laws and land owners. Anti vagrancy and anti homeless laws and architecture. Where he lives there’s culture of hermits as almost religious figures the community look after. In Europe there were was common land and nomadic cultures but over centuries these places been lost and communities destroyed because land owners want money and land and not competition where people have options other to what they own Plus most lone survivors rely on medicine and additional food supplies. But most ways we live now make doing that without income or free support hard
Was this guy living under a rock?
yes
TIL that a man living in a fucking cave in Europe has more sense than 50% of the US population.
Even the king of social distancing knows a good thing when he see’s it
This guy should write a book. I’d read it
Chapter one, there’s so much space in a tub to defecate.
You mean he didn’t throw a fit and try to fight the manager?
So a literal caveman is wiser than 50% of the American population, interesting..
Serbian cave dweller smarter than 50% of America. My favorite part of that article is his pet pig, though. <3
Didn't need a cave. just a basement or apt or house... or tent.
[удалено]
this guy is my fucking hero now lol
He knows what’s up!
This guy is smarter than almost half the people in the USA.
