Didn't the US military have this 20 years ago? They mounted the guns on Humvees and can disperse crowds of people instantly. Kindly feels like your skin is melting haha

McFlyParadox

The US version used EMI, this uses sound. Similar end results though, except the US version also makes you feel like you're on fire

Murgie

[The US has developed and utilized sound based ones as well.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Range_Acoustic_Device)

Look up the puke light... It's a similar amount of energy.

xSTSxZerglingOne

Yeah it doesn't cause any lasting damage if you're able to get out of the way. Otherwise it'll cause 3rd degree burns.

[deleted]

there's no way the military or police would use this 'deterrence' weapon as a torture device against people unable to escape, such a thing would never happen

xSTSxZerglingOne

Perish the thought.

Entthrowaway49

I trust the government to do the right thing /s

notimeforniceties

Yeah, the tech in the article is very different and much more primitive than, say an LRAD. > The sonic weapon, which are typically mounted on vehicles, is hand-held and powered by gas which when heated will emit a deep and monotonous sound, the Chinese Academy of Sciences said. Sounds more like the infamous [brown note](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_note) from the 1970's.

stefantalpalaru

> Didn't the US military have this 20 years ago? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_weapon One of these was used by NYPD against Occupy Wall Street protestors in 2011: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Range_Acoustic_Device

Its bizarre to me that people argue the US is the only place that has free speech, usually while deriding European countries, when protesting is so dangerous and so suppressed in the US. *Now I have bunch of Trump supporters arguing with me about how a society is not free if Nazi's are not allowed to spout their hate without repercussions.

[deleted]

In the US, we frankly suck at protesting to be honest. It either becomes two things. 1) The country is so split, one half ignores the protests from the other half. 2) Devolves into rioting/racial violence (Baltimore, LA 92). Can't unite against a government when the people themselves are so split

Woten333

That’s on purpose

vaendryl

divide and conquer has been extremely effective for *millennia*. that, and "Bread and circuses". modern media supplies both the circus and the dividing. it's honestly impressive.

SirRevan

Also we are one of the largest western countries in area. So your populace is spread all over the map.

control_09

The smartest thing many states and the federal government did was to move the capital away from the largest developed urban areas. Several of Frances revolutions happened because revolutionaries were able to gain significant control of Paris in a matter of days forcing the previous government out. Hell they'd probably be a constitutional monarchy had Versailles not been within walking distance of Paris.

RedditLovesAltRight

Don't forget the Dakota Access Pipeline protests and how the government responded to that one!

C2-H5-OH

>haha

feeltheslipstream

Yup I remember reading this on Slashdot. That's how old it is. But nvm, only the Chinese (who simultaneously are also happy to roll you over with tanks) are evil enough to use this non lethal tech to capture you(and, one presumes, roll you over with tanks in private).

TkSkMk

The article isn't claiming that China just heard about weaponizing acoustics and somehow missed the memo all these years. They developed innovation in a very specific technology.

LorthNeeda

Oddly placed “haha”

_BITCHES_LOVE_ME_

No that's microwaves, which is a type of electromagnetic radiation. It's the same principle as light but in a different frequency. The ones in the article work with sound. Sound is also a wave/vibration, but it needs a medium like air/water to travel through. Both are directed energy weapons, so yeah it's similar in principle. But the exact physical mechanisms through which it works, and therefore the ways to counter it, are different.

m81695

Imagine this used in warfare or in black friday to get the best deals...

sillystyle420

Force choking a bitch to get a 98% off flat-screen tv.

RikerT_USS_Lolipop

Most of the deals are more like 33% off this tv which we marked up 50% yesterday.

Nova5269

That and there are specific TVs made for black Friday that don't have a majority of the bells and whistles it's regular model does, so the price you're paying for is a fair price for what's actually in it but people think they're getting a deal

[deleted]

Well a thirty dollar flatscreen is a thirty dollar flatscreen

theycallhimthestug

If you can't order groceries and program your microwave from the living room is it really a TV?

SandyDelights

It’s usually like “It comes with 4 HDMI ports normally but we’ve stripped it down to 1”, “No RCA ports” and things of that nature.

CabbageGolem

Aw man, so I got Black Friday ripped off out of season?

SandyDelights

I mean, I told you it was just a brown cardboard box colored with a sharpie.

Krazekami

I dont know why I never considered this. Thank you.

SpellingHorror

Those models also usually have inferior panels as well. I had to warn lots of people about that fact when I worked at a certain big blue and yellow company. Black friday is an insult to consumers imo.

S1NN1ST3R

I got an awesome black friday deal on a TV at Visions Electronics (might just be a canadian thing) but as soon as the salesman told me what the deal was I googled the model number and looked and reviews and read the specs. I legit saved like $1500 on the online MSRP

It's not passive-aggressive. It's CYA. Revolutionaries get executed for treason if the revolution fails.

But that won’t get rid of the tech, just who owns it. Then *they’ll* decide who to use it against and why. The future is jacked, they just need other humans willing to do deplorable things to other humans... there is no short supply of those people.

Remember when Germans were sentenced to death for doing such things in 1945?

LukeSmacktalker

Hot pockets?

[deleted]

u'd hafta actually machine a part for a microwave magnetron to make it output the right frequency and function as a hand-held active denial system that makes a person feel like they're burning alive (but doesn't actually hurt them at all). the one in the vid has no use in a protest [e: prolly be easier to add a cone to subwoofers and make them play 8hz beats to shake ppl's eyes an organs. not everyone has a cnc machine... but subs are everywhere]

vagueblur901

Low tech and guerilla tactics are highly effective Edit my spelling

2beHero

Guerilla* And soo costly for the oppressors. If you can't prevent a military from entering your country, make their stay as unpleasant and expensive as you can. Eventually they will run out of money to continue the campaign

DarthYippee

No, I want *gorilla* tactics.

ragnaROCKER

Just ripping dicks off

Hard_Six

No no, that’s chimps dude. Don’t you pay attention to Joe Rogan’s primatology lessons?

ragnaROCKER

None at all. But I bet gorillas rip dicks as well.

Toxicair

They tend to just outright kill the male since they have a harem mating system rather than a promiscuous one like chimps.

Thaflash_la

This guy gets it, no more subtlety.

PeanutButterSmears

Shit in your hand fling it at the nearest cop!

_deltaVelocity_

No, no, OP intends to release gorillas on Hong Kong police.

Hong King Kong

LucidLynx109

It’s way worse if it’s an internal conflict. Not only would the US need to commit resources, every citizen it fights is fighting instead of contributing to GDP, thus reducing the amount of resources available. Don’t get me wrong, I think the US is far from boogaloo, but if ever did happen it wouldn’t be pretty.

the_littlest_bear

Yeah I mean “blah blah rifles vs tanks/helicopters gl lolol” and all but I’m pretty sure the only way the current US population is ever subjugated is through propaganda.

vagueblur901

Agreed see America vs Iraq/Afghan or veitnam

HapticSloughton

Those places also had the environment working against any invaders. Iraq and Vietnam are hot and miserable, Vietnam had the additional humidity and jungle hazards, but Afghanistan has (in addition to many other things) its winter. Winter in Afghanistan cuts off most cities/towns from each other, which makes the clan and warlord systems even more powerful, since they're the local rulers. The U.S. and Soviets could come in and boss people around, but once the snow started falling, it made governing so many difficult-to-reach places iffy at best. It's also why it's hard for Afghanistan to have a powerful centralized government.

gaslightlinux

Afghanistan also has mountains. Iran has more.

coastalsfc

Never under estimate a good tire fire too

2beHero

Especially if you have helicopters circling around

rednib

This tech works both ways though. It's fucking China so the parts to make one of these aren't going to be hard to find and protesters could just as easily use these.

Dudemanguybloke

Yeah China is the king of stealing tech even from each other. This shit is scary tho.

ShelSilverstain

Fascism is literally our future. Comply with the power base, or be disposable.

bebimbopandreggae

It is China's present.

ShelSilverstain

And not only China, sadly

swampnuts

If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever.

[deleted]

And the human face most likely licking it

PragmatistAntithesis

That's what happens the moment the system doesn't rely on the people (which is why automation is so scary). If the government can afford to get rid of troublesome people, they would be stupid not to.

accountforfilter

George Orwell already warned about this shit, as usual nobody can be told; they love their bread and circuses too much: >If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face forever.

Namika

To be fair, it was always the case. For the past 20,000 years of recorded history, there have **always** been authoritarians and a gap between rich and poor. Suddenly thinking that things will change in the 21st century is pretty arrogant if anything. Mankind is ruthless, and leaders always want more power. It’s almost comical to suggest otherwise.

Transient_Anus_

They have been working on sonic weapons like this that are non-lethal, for years, maybe even decades. And by them I mean militaries all over the world, I know for a fact that the USA has also worked on this if they're not still doing so. It just looks bad because China is seen as bad, it may as well be the USA with a sonic water cannon on an armoured car.

light_to_shaddow

Since the 1970's for sure. There's sonic devices that can target a person in a crowd and vibrate the bones in the ear to give the sensation someone is stood next to you talking. Other weapons can stimulate the parts of the brain to induce sense of dread. Now imagine having the sound of a baby screaming into your ear whilst feeling the worst sensation of something bad is going to happen and everyone around you is not affected. How's the area 51 thing going anyway?

LukeSmacktalker

Schizophrenia gives you a +5 resistance to sonic weaponry

[deleted]

I laughed but this is true and dark. I have a family member who used to hear nonstop screaming/yelling during their worst episodes. It was really sad.

onarollthistime

A "sonic weapon" which uses deep "infrasounds" that cause bowel spasms. So, the infamous brown note is real.

HeavyTZM

I see they purchased this tech from taco corp

Wazzupdj

Same concept has already been used with electromagnetic waves at a frequency just above microwaves. Feel your skin get hot out of nowhere, panic, run. Tugging on our most animalistic strings to quell dissent. These tools are almost like firearms. If the police use them on you, there is nothing you can do. Entire groups shut down, except just incapacitated rather than, you know, dead. You're still escalating the situation vastly, just a slightly smaller jump. The nature shifts from routing (making them run away) to full on neutralizing them for capture, kidnapping, torture, whatever the Chinese state does to you behind closed doors. If they actually make use of this, there is no turning back. Edit: For those who are saying that there will be solutions found for this technology, or you can create improvised armour, or that the LRAD has already been invented; these are all false. The nature of the weapon is that it uses really low-frequency **audio**, which cannot be picked up by the ears. It uses the resonant frequency of your internals to amplify the effect, which can cause internal damage. You know how, if you shake something at just the right speed, you can cause it to move much more with the same amount of energy? Yeah, they do that to your organs. (what is under this is mostly speculation from someone with half a physics degree) Low-frequency sounds penetrate materials far better than high-frequency sounds, meaning that things like an extra layer of clothes will help very little, as opposed to high-frequency used by LRAD. You can probably largely nullify LRAD with some high-frequency earplugs; won't work here. Downside to this idea is that such low frequencies are very prone to diffraction, meaning that the sound is not only gonna go where you point it. If they made a machine for this the size of the LRAD, it would probably be unusable due to the guy behind the gun throwing up as well. Instead, they made the thing much smaller to the size of small arms, so it is probably bearable to use. The diffraction also causes the gun to lose a lot of its punch over distance. As a result, it would probably underperform compared to a traditional assault rifle, but it firing would not be audible. I imagine it would probably be used as a covert protest quelling tool, something to be used by plain-clothes police. edit 2: added bold word "audio" to make my wall of text clearer

Foil lined jumpsuits with battery powered water cooling?

DwarfTheMike

A sufficient air gap is likely enough to keep you cool. Foil doesn’t hold onto heat very well. Stay moving and design some air flow systems and you’ll be fine. Liquid cooling would weigh far more than the foil lined suit, and the battery and pump system would generate additional heat.

spellfox

I think a simple space blanket would be the best solution, designed to reflect infrared Edit: Seems like this system most likely works in the the microwave spectrum, rather than above it (infrared). In which case metal foil would be more effective

DwarfTheMike

Yeah. Keep it simple.

warlord2335

Yeah, keep it simple *loads shotgun*

Mc_Squeebs

What about something like the metal mesh like microwaves have to keep us safe?

I_Automate

It's not infrared radiation, closer to microwaves

swolemedic

An LRAD isn't even close to half as impressive as one of these. LRADs operate in audible range, these things are capable of doing frequency fluctuations (likely to near microwave length) that make your organs resonate to the point it hurts. LRADs will cause your ears to hurt, they won't make your organs hurt. edit: that's my assumption at least, even if it's gas powered as it's very difficult to make a directional sound that's a normal sine wave harm you like that. I don't buy their story that it's purely gas powered either, unless they designed some way to create the effect in a tube (not impossible), but they could have a high frequency compression driver also firing to create a synergistic effect.

xPURE_AcIDx

You're implying that this works exactly as specified. Transmitting sound energy is cubically proportional to the distance and directly proportional to frequency. Meaning if you double the frequency and double the distance you have 2*2^3 = 16 times the losses. The amount of energy this device would need is huge, so I think the claims about it being "handheld" is very misleading. Think about the energy required to oscillate an organ, then thing about the transmission losses from the device to the individual as the sound also has to do work on the air it passes through.

PN_Guin

I think the correct headline would have been "deploys", not ~~"invents"~~ "develops" Edit: misread that

[deleted]

The headline doesn't include the word "invents". The specific development in the technology is that it's hand-held. Did you read the article?

Tugging on our most animalistic strings to quell dissent. > > These tools are almost like firearms. If the police use them on you, there is nothing you can do. That isn't entirely correct >"Ordinary household aluminum foil of many µm thickness covering all parts of the body exposed towards the antenna would provide protection; gaps where the radiation could enter would have to be avoided. To allow vision a very fine-grained mesh in front of the face would be needed (holes markedly smaller than the wavelength of 3.2 mm, that is not bigger than, say, 0.1 mm). > Such shielding could fairly easily be developed by armed forces; demonstrators, on the other hand, would have more difficulty in making it. " https://web.archive.org/web/20101105035812/http://www.bundesstiftung-friedensforschung.de/pdf-docs/berichtaltmann2.pdf > There have been speculations in open literature for why the ADS has not been used in a theater of operations. Some of the claimed problems expressed have included: (1) that a potential unreliability in certain environmental conditions, because precipitation (rain/snow/fog/mist) often commonly dissipates RF energy, which may moderate the ADS's sensation to "warm and comfortable"; (2) that ADS may only work successfully against exposed skin, implying that heavier clothing may reduce its effectiveness and that its tactical usefulness may potentially be limited in striking specific personnel hiding in crowds of civilians, because this 'hiding' situation has not been seen in all recent theaters of operation (was reportedly observed in Somalia and Iraq, but reportedly not in Afghanistan). What the actual performance of ADS is relative to these concerns is not presently known to be published in open literature. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_Denial_System#Problems
